Effects is a 1979 horror film directed by Dusty Nelson which was released on

A film crew joins up to shoot a slasher film, unaware that people are actually going to die on set.

Making tropes can be murder:

  • Bar Brawl: Celeste the gaffer and Dominic the cinematographer get into a clash with others at a nightclub when a patron antagonizes them.
  • The Ending Changes Everything: At the end, when everything is revealed to have been staged, with the film crew being actors, it puts everything that apparently happened in the film in a new context.
  • Kensington Gore: While discussing how to portray blood splatters, Lacey and Celeste each use a razor on a prop leg, causing pale and bright red fake blood to gush from it.
  • The Lad-ette: Celeste, the gaffer, is a woman who favours a more butch fashion sense, has a taste for Scotch whisky, and can handle herself in a bar fight.
  • Mad Artist: Lacey Bickel is a film director whose idea of good cinema involves actually killing people on camera. Good thing he's actually a fictional portrayal in-universe.
  • Show Within a Show: The work is about a film crew apparently filming a movie. All of the events of the film, including the deaths, were staged as part of filming Duped: The Snuff Movie in-universe.
  • Snuff Film: Film director Lacey Bickel intends to record people's deaths on camera in the name of cinema. All of the events of the movie, including the recorded deaths, were staged as part of filming Duped: The Snuff Movie.
  • Shower Scene: Rita is introduced in a state of undress where she is showering for a scene.
  • Wicked Pretentious: Lacey puts on airs of being a cinephile, but is really just a creep who enjoys killing people on camera. That's all just a stage persona.
