Tropes for the film:

  • Playing a Tree: Ben is the bookish son of a zealously fundamentalist Christian mother. At some point in the film, his mother directs a play at their local church; she casts the 20-something guy she's got a crush on as Jesus; Ben is stuck playing a eucalyptus tree.
  • Precision F-Strike: The movie has a well-placed F strike toward the end (in the American version it's one of only two F words, the earlier one being spoken by Evie earlier on during their road trip to Edinburgh, and the two lines that follow this one are cut entirely).
    Ben: Fuck off, Sarah.
    Sarah: What did you say?
    Ben: I said, fuck off.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Done twice:
    • When Ben, after coming home late, explains to his mother that he'd gotten held up, she responds, "Got...held...up?".
    • Later on, during the road trip to Edinburgh, Ben goes on a drunken ramble that ends with "For God...is...love".
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: After years of living with a fundamentalist mother, Ben finally stands up to her following an Easter pageant which gets crashed by Evie, who had opened his mind, and calls her on her bullshit as she tries preaching to him yet again. Later, after her subsequent onscreen car accident (which does nothing to disabuse her of her fundamentalist beliefs, as she attributes her survival to God loving the thrifty because according to the doctor the car would've killed her if it wasn't a compact car), her husband Robert does this to her offscreen by divorcing her.
  • Swallow the Key: Evie swallows the car key to stop the uptight Ben driving away. She does reassure him that it will be back in the morning, and she is as regular as clockwork.
Ben: Oh my God! You've swallowed the key.
Evie: What a relief, he swears.
Ben: You swallowed the fucking key!
    Evie: Even better!
  • Tagline: "All Ben wanted was a job. All Evie needed was a friend".
