A medium, Martha Travis (Rosanna Arquette), travels around the United States with her controlling father Walter (Jason Robards). She has a vision of a man being shot dead. Though he's not dead yet, he soon will be, and her accurate vision places her in danger.

The 1989 movie was directed and written by Mike Hodges (Get Carter). No relation to Beyond the Black Rainbow.

Tropes

  • Black Bra and Panties: Martha strips down to these almost immediately when she meets Gary in her hotel room.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Martha always wears a white gown when she's performing (as a medium) in her shows.
  • Professional Killer: Mr Davidson is hired to do this job.
  • Semantic Superpower: The best, and most likely, reason for why Martha can see people in the spirit world before they've actually died. This presumably involves some Required Secondary Powers of (at least limited) telepathy and/or time travel, but it's enough that Martha can communicate with the dead - whether or not they've actually died first.
  • Southern Gothic: Downplayed, but Martha and Walter are traveling around North Carolina when a hitman tries to kill Martha to remove the last potential risk as part of a conspiracy to break up unions.
