Frankie Del Vecchio, a young Italian-American woman, is a singer-songwriter trying to get her break, while she's engaged to aspiring frozen food businessman Tony. She rents a car and finds there's a body in the trunk which Frankie reports. After this, her sister Heather (who's obsessed with the Mafia) convinces her to attend a real mobster's funeral. There, they meet Nicolette, whom unbeknownst to either one is the new Mafia boss's daughter. After Heather invites Nicolette to watch Frankie perform, Nicolette suggests Frankie could make it big on the show Mob Hit. Nicolette, a lesbian, grows quickly attracted to Frankie, who's confused about her feelings. The FBI is investigating meanwhile, and the Mafia are suspicious about Frankie, thinking she's possibly an undercover cop. As danger looms, the two women become closer, and have to get a handle on their feelings.

Examples:

  • Age-Gap Romance: Heather slept with Caesar, Nicolette's dad, who's her own father's age, to his dismay. She points out he also dated a much younger woman on breaking up with her mother.
  • Ambiguously Bi: It's never made entirely clear if Frankie is lesbian, bi or what, given she's got a male fiance at the start before falling for a woman. She seems unsure herself of all this as she'd apparently never been attracted by women before.
  • Casting Gag: Nicolette says Frankie is good enough a singer to get on American Idol. In fact, her actress Diana DeGarmo did get on in 2004, finishing in second place.
  • Closet Gay: Nicolette is a closeted lesbian at first, knowing that her family would disapprove.
  • Closet Key: Frankie shows surprise upon realizing she's attracted to Nicolette. She's engaged to a man, apparently having never felt this way before.
  • FBI Agent: Two of them, a man and woman, are investigating the Mafia family in the film, but they never get anywhere.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Frankie and Nicolette's families discover they're attracted to each other by their suggestively dancing together while at the Italian heritage festival. Their families accept them, with some reluctance.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Nicolette is seen making out with a female baker at the beginning as her young male assistant gleefully watches, proclaiming it makes her baking better. Later he's equally happy to see her and the female FBI agent together.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Twice Frankie and Nicolette are about to have sex or making out when someone interrupts by calling or walking in.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Nicolette and the other lesbians seen all have long hair, feminine clothing etc. This also applies to Frankie, though she may be bi.
  • The Mafia: Nicolette's father Caesar is a mobster, and takes over the local family on the old boss's death. It turns out Frankie's father is a bookie working for him, and she's very upset to learn this.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Nicolette is shown coming out of a bathroom stall after having had sex with a woman inside (to judge by her loud cries before).
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Frankie's given name is Francesca, but she's only called it a couple times by her mother.
  • Queer Romance: The story of an Italian-American musician and a mob boss's daughter falling in love.
  • Tomboyish Name: Frankie is a female character (her full given name is Francesca).
