These are recommendations made by tropers for Fan Fics, all of which have been signed. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do note which pairings in the fic, if any, venture into lemony territory. Not everyone's a fan of either slash or het, let alone the other, stranger options.

whimsyappletea

  • Recommended by MandarinMe
  • Comments:Just as her name implies, she's whimsical and sweet. Also called "zora" by her fellow authors. One of the few writers out there who knows how to grab your heart and seize it with breathtaking, unimaginable writing. Her stories extend from angst from the Abyss to hilariously depicted situations that will have you clutching at your sides as you die laughing. Her passion for writing shows, and you won't regret checking out her works. However. Beware of her sincest shipping.

Piriluk

  • Recommended by MandarinMe
  • Comments: Piriluk is a quirky writer whose works involve deep and intricate plots. She likes leaning towards the complexity of a story such as "caligo". She's also known for her successful collaborations and oneshots in the Vocaloid section, and her writing is stupendous! Her depictions of the Kagamines are exceptionally hilarious, and while her old works are nothing to sneeze at, she's definitely upped her game since then.

Amaryne

  • Recommended by MandarinMe
  • Comments: One of the best Vocaloid authors since the Vocaloid boom. Her works are hilarious and worth looking over, and over, and over. She's got wonderful stories that are memorable for the avid readers. Not to mention she's highly introspective and a master at creating deep characterizations that reach to the end of the world and back. Trust me, you will never regret reading her stories. There just aren't enough pages in the world to fill the glory of her intricacy in writing.

Your Truth is my Lie

  • Recommended by Lisztening
  • Comments: One of the few Vocaloid fanfiction writers out there who really explores the worlds presented in each music video in song based works and manages to stay true in feel to the source material while adding her own touches. She is very fond of explicit femslash lemon though and is especially fond of Neru x Haku so those who are averse to such types of works may want to think before jumping in to read her fanfiction. With that said, her writing is very finely tuned and her sex scenes sensuously composed without becoming gratuitously purple, so if one isn't extremely put off by Yuri Genre, it is very worthwhile to give her a chance.

Naty17

  • Recommended by: theunhappytwins, parucafe
  • "Comments": She rarely uses PVs for inspiration. And by 'rarely', I mean almost never. However, she writes some of the best darkfics out there, and is brilliant at writing for RinxLen, which is her main pairing. Her writing is extremely good. If you aren't put off by the amount of darkness, you should definitely check it out.

Masaichu

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Comments: A great writer who likes to depicts fictional family ties or affection links between Vocaloid, Voyakiloid and Utauloid. Reading what they write usually change your idea of some of them.

Ask Kagamine Len

  • Recommended by: A Patchwork Scholar
  • Comments: A fan-made ask blog for Kagamine Len. Not only is the art very high-quality and cool, it has a very interesting and lovable portrayal of Len. It also mixes comedy and drama really well despite it having no real storyline. Very worth a look if you have time.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Late Night Madness by ShinigamiOfHeaven.

  • Recommended by Mysterynovelist2010
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Based in a world were the deformed are sent away so that society won't have to deal with them, an unusual bunch of deformed band together to escape Koo Island: their prison.
  • Comments: Unlike most 'Late Night Madness' fics, this one focuses more on the backgrounds of each of those seen in the song, which gives more depth and reality to the story. Plus, it makes a pretty interesting twist, considering that the characters are not as 'mad' as they appear and are determined to escape.

Vocal Vision by AnarchySong.

  • Recommended by fantasydoll
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Vocaloids. Individuals with amazing abilities and an affinity for music. When hard-headed and strong-willed Miku Hatsune sets out on her own to find a so-called "Legendary Assassin", what she encounters instead may not be exactly what she was expecting. Join Miku, Luka, Gumi, and the rest of the cast as they embark on an adventure epic proportions!
  • Comments: This sounds like your average adventure story, but is far more complicated and interesting than one and has a very good and developed plot. An original story with The Vocaloid cast, cool powers, cool villains, cool gadgets, very good character development, with focus on the relationships between personages and the trials and predicaments they must go through, discrimination and the government.I like that the story is not focused on just one personage (Miku), and the story is told from many perspectives (Luka, Gumi, Teto, Uta, even from the villain's perspective). I like that the story has set separate adventures for different personages, where they are the protagonist, and I like how they start to reunite and work together for the same purposes. The action is absolutely epic. I strongly recommend you to read this fic. It's just half completed, but you will not be disappointed to take your time and read it.

Kidnapped by Chibis of Evil.

  • Recommended by MikaruKeiko
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After Tei kidnaps Len, the main crew makes a long journey to rescue him.
  • Comments: Edges slightly into Crack Fic and Dark Fic territory, but is mostly overshadowed by its lighter moments. Now has a sequel.

Daughter of the White Tiger by Ghost-Drive.

  • Recommended by Mirelle94Dancer
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: "A girl, an exorcist, a famed figure told in tales. A boy, a mass murderer, whose name would scare innocent children. Generations passed- the girl had forgotten him- and when they meet again, he tried to bring "the old her" back. But was it necessary?"
  • Comments: At first, this seem to be a romance fic. But as the story goes on it seems to be covering about the problems of life surrounding the main character (Rin) and her guardian spirit (Len) as they venture in their holiday life. The author said they will be fighting off satan in the process. Tenses are a bit messed up, but it has a good plot worth reading with emotional torrents inside.

Utatane Piko: Journey To My Family by xXPhantomXx

  • Recommended by Shamisen-kun
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: "Utatane Piko was due out December 8th. But when the truck containing the packaged Piko in the back skids on the icy road in the countryside and crashes, killing the driver, Piko is left alone to make his own journey to the Vocaloid household."
  • Comments: A darker look into the origins of Utatane Piko, one of the lesser-known Vocaloids. Piko is naturally mostly clueless about the world, so his interactions with the environment are realistic and cute- a certain question of 'I need to pee?' comes to mind. Little to no spelling or grammar errors, and a well-developed plot. Overall, definitely take the time to read this. Sadly, it's incomplete at the time of recommendation.

From Concert to Chaos by Mr. Fanfic Guy

  • Recommended by CJO123
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: On the afternoon of Saturday, July 10, 2010, the Vocaloids held a concert at the Tanabata festival in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa. The decision would prove to be disastrous. Right in the middle of the concert, Miku and Rin were savagely and mercilessly attacked on stage in front of more than 16,000 fans by Miku Zatsune and Rin Arakawa. And what provoked this attack? The fact that Zatsune and Arakawa were dating Mikuo and Len, respectively. When they were dumped because of their rotten behavior, they convinced themselves that the girls were somehow responsible for it, and that they would have to pay dearly, even though that is clearly not the case. Unbelievably, it actually gets much much worse than that. Too much to really list, but I will tell you it involves an electric barrier, a wall of fire, massive audience panic, and towards the end of the fanfic, a prison escape. Even though Miku and Rin are both seriously injured in this attack, they will eventually recover, and their assailants will get their comeuppance.
  • Comments: From the same author of the Lucky Star fanfics The Day Everything Changed and Holiday Vacation. May not be suitable for readers under age 13. A prime example of a Dark Fic, and packed with a good amount of Nightmare Fuel, especially during Chapter 4 and Chapter 7. You can't help but to feel sorry for both Miku and Rin, due to the fact that they did absolutely nothing to deserve what they were put through and neither did the nearly 900 (!) victims in the audience who were also injured. In terms of the rest of the characters, most of the Vocaloids, and in particular Mikuo and Len, become much stronger in the later chapters. Overall, despite the violence level, this is a very well written fanfic that you won't be able to put down.
    • @RN 452: I cannot recommend this fanfic. The writing is not good, in fact the paragraphs are cluttered, in the sense there's more than three persons talking in the same paragraph, an amateur mistake. Arakawa and Zatsune are simply villains whose schtick is to flaunt how EVIL they are (in fact, the trope page makes too much effort in using them to announce the fic, which is reflected in the actual fic). In fact, it needs rewriting.

Behind Golden Eyes by Ryuchu

  • Recommended By: mysterynovelist2010
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A war that's stood unresolved for years, a group of mysterious child snatchers, a young boy who's just trying to survive day by day. When these 3 elements meet, Oliver is thrown into a life he neither expected nor wanted.
  • Comments: One of the best Oliver-centric fics I've ever read, Behind Golden Eyes has proven to be a really realistic story so far, portraying the struggles of a young poor boy trying to escape the army that is trying to turn him into a child soldier while finding his two companions very accurately, with believable reactions to the events transpiring around him.

Angels of Light by alvinluv

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Kaito, Meiko, Miku and Yuki are happy family. They would like to adopt a little boy though, and go to a Christian orphanage. Strange rumors spread on two odd twins, Rin and Len. They both win the heart of the family and soon move in their new house. Miku however, is plagued by horrific nightmares...
  • Comments: This fanfiction give goosebumps. Maybe not the best darkfic our there, but still a good one.

I Don't Want Her, I Want You by The Queen of Double Standards

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A few hours after Len proposed to Rin, he was shortly killed. Rin learn the news and cope very badly, falling into depression. That's when Yuki and a social worker show at her doorstep; Yuki was adopted by Len...
  • Comments: Heart-wrenching tale. Its plot is unique and the interactions between the characters are chilling realistic. There's a few hints of Iroha/Rin, because Yuki calls them 'Mom' and 'Mama', and both women live under the same roof. However, Rin's damaged personality abort romance, and it even takes her a long time to accept Yuki in her life. Interesting turn in children abuse, too. A must-read.

All The Fragile Ones by Tiruneko

  • Recommended by: RN452
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "The blade flew into the young girl's skull, killing her. But out of the fog of pain the small child staggered to her feet and pulled the blade right out of her head, splattering the audience with blood. "Such a bad child you are! Demon child!" And without another glimpse of daylight, she was shut away. But that was a long time ago. And things change, but not that much."
  • Comments: A novelization of "Six Trillion Years and Overnight Story", but expanded. The characterization is excellent and it'll make you sad, but while it has a dark tone, it's also tempered with calm moments.

Release Me From My Song by experimentingdangers

  • Recommended by: RN452
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Miku is a program. All the Vocaloids are. But when a few of these Vocaloids outsmart the program and become human they will discover just how much they have been missing out, from lifeless and emotionless to sharp emotions they will struggle to stay human. To never become that unfeeling singer again. They become fighters, battling for a different voice."
  • Comments: Basically the Vocaloids start to become self-aware and managed to escape from the cyberspace and land in an alternate dimension where they are humans. This is an exceptionally well-written Vocaloid fic, in which the Vocaloids have a lot of Character Development to learn to work with their newfound human emotions and bodies. The human OCs are also well-written, fitting in the setting like a glove. In a nutshell, a very good Slice of Life, until the chapter 44, and even that was foreshadowed.

The Adversary by Calico Cat

  • Recommended by: Mcnickel
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "A girl awakes in a room. She writes music and her compositions are critiqued by an unseen companion. In the melodies and harmonies that are exchanged, the first sounds of the future come into being…"

Hear My Song! by Kuugen the Fox.

  • Recommended by shermanramni, Raineh Daze.
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairings: Miku X Luka, Neru X Haku, and others.
  • Synopsis: There are many idols and stars in modern Tokyo, but one shines above others, Luka Megurine. Miku Hatsune, your everyday ordinary girl, aims to become like her. A songstress, a Idol. But nothing is as it seems in the music business.
  • Comments: Well fleshed-out personalities and interactions, great pacing, and a compelling story. Some of the pairings are a bit annoying, but maybe it's because they still haven't had time to develop (only 3 chapters for now). WARNING: Mild yuri content.

Go Google It by Lithium Suicide.

  • Recommended by JenKunoichi351
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairings: Gakupo X Luka
  • Synopsis: This was the first and last time Luka would try internet dating.
  • Comments: The story has a really nice flow and the character interaction between Luka and Gakupo, both on and off the internet, is hilarious. Unfortunately, the updating is really erratic. It's not a dead fic, but it gets updated about twice a year or less.

Unlucky in Life, Love, and Suicide by Vocaloidofos

  • Recommended by: Keikosaur
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: The only thing Mikuo expected to get out of his suicide attempt was a broken bicycle. Now he has Akaito. Oh, and The Haganes, but you haven't heard of an obscure traveling band like them. (told in diary format)
  • Pairing(s): Akaito X Mikuo is the main focus (meaning there's yaoi), but there is also RinxLen (Magane, not Kagamine. Whether this is incest or not is apparently up to who you ask, even in-story). There are sort-of sex scenes, but nothing lemony.
  • Comments: The story is very good and original; its main focus is romance, obviously, but unlike many shipping fics this does not mean the plot is sacrificed. Each of the characters is also very distinct and full of life (and they have their own voices; it's immediately clear when someone other than Mikuo is writing in his diary). Also, it's hardly dark or depressing at all even though the premise of the story is a suicide pact, yet the characters' emotions still seem real and make sense. I loved it in general, and it's definitely worth a read!

I Once Saw A Goddess by Ordile

  • Recommended by: CJ Croen 1393
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Miku meets Luka in the park and is instantly mesmerized by her beauty. But then she begins to feel something more for her than admiration...
  • Pairing(s): Miku/Luka, so it's yuri. Also hints of Kaito/Meiko and one-sided Gakupo/Luka.
  • Comments: One of the best Miku/Luka fics I've read. Miku is totally Adorkable in it and Luka is portrayed quite well. Their relationship is shown to grow rather realistically, although so far the feelings are one-sided from Miku. Still something to read if you want a cute, kind of funny little yuri story.

For a Sick Boy by renahh chen

  • Recommended by: Nothingtoseehere
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Len, a rather shy teenager, discovers that he is in love with his identical twin sister, Rin. From there, things get much, much worse for Len.
  • Pairings: Onesided Len/Rin, Miku/Luka
  • Comments: A very realistic, deconstructive take on Twincest, especially one-sided. Told entirely as Len speaks to a psychiatrist (except the epilogue), it captures his character and emotions very well. Be warned that it contains suicide, self-harm, descriptions of incest, and yuri.

An Obnoxiously Long Way to Say Something So Simple by hamxham

  • Recommended by: Gigglepud
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: 100. Until the end. A collection of 100 hundred-word drabbles for the Kagamines.
  • Pairings: Len/Rin Twincest
  • Comments: A light humorous collection of well-written drabbles. It was a great read, even for me who don't particularly ship Rin/Len as twincest.

Dear Gumi, by manateelover777

  • Recommended by: codepurple
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Gumi, aka a socially invisible otaku, considers herself a fail at high school life. Once she literally runs into Len at an otherwise boring assembly, however, her life is turned upside down.
  • Pairings: Len/Gumi, and it's looking like Gakupo/Luka and SeeU/Kaito
  • Comments: A diary done from Gumi's POV. The interactions are realistic, even if some of the plot points are not. There are a few spelling errors and misused words at the beginning, but it gets better.

Discord by Meepy

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A collection of AU drabbles and/or one-shots, each one depicting Dell and Lily's relationships.
  • Pairings: Lily/Dell not all the time though...
  • Comments: It's sometimes short, sometimes not; either way, it's very well done and make your heart ache, because it can be sweet or sad. I really recommend it.

Faceless by Fantasism

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Two years ago, it took her brother. And now it was coming for her.
  • Pairings: Gakupo/Rin
  • Comments: Slenderman AU. A hesitant friendship forms between Rin and Gakupo, a detective. An interesting read. This author also writes great and his Gakupo/Rin one-shots are worth of a try.

to save the birds by bbyiamthesexypizza

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Rin and Len are identical twins, rather than fraternal. After their parents' breakup, they get separated -though they still live in the same town- and Len, being a clumsy, dorky teenager, tries to maintain a timid link with his sister.
  • Pairings: It doesn't look like it at first, but it's Rin/Len.
  • Comments: Wow. Definitely wow. If no fanfic pleased you in this list, this one will enchant you. It's told in a very realistic tone, mainly because it's by Len's point of view, which tend to be pessimistic.

You Have Mail by Amaryne

  • Recommended by: parucafe
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A story told by IMs, texts, and all those other stuff those darn teenagers use these days.
  • Pairings: Rin/Len, Kaito/Miku, Luka/Gakupo
  • Comments: I'm surprised this wasn't here already. A fanfic that brings a smile on anyone's face. If you ever have a bad day, just read this!

Second Star by Mipiko

  • Recommended by: enzeneie
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Even the passage of time does nothing to dampen the bond and love between two close friends. The story about a young Princess and her adventures with a young boy who never wanted to grow up.
  • Pairings: SF-A2 miki and YOHIOloid with established VY2 Yuuma x MEIKO and KAITO x Miku
  • Comments: I've never read a fanfiction that gripped my attention as steadfast as this one. Towards the final two chapters, I was absolutely engrossed in it that I actually teared up after Miki discovers Yohio's limp and bloodied body after managing to defeat the Gryphon that tried to kill her, waiting anxiously for him to breathe, only to find out that once she's sure he's still alive that he's now missing one of his hands.. The choice of vocabulary also adds onto the fairytale like structure that it's got going on that's a nice touch. Definitely recommend.

Of Revenge and Redemption by TangeloTime

  • Recommended by iTroll
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which Kaito and Meiko run into Rin, dressed as Len, a month and a half after the death of the Daughter of Evil
  • Pairing: Kaito x Miku, though it isn't the focus.
  • Comments: An especially heartbreaking fanfiction that plays with the idea if what would happen if Kaito and Meiko met Rin in the aftermath of the execution. It has especially beautiful imagery and it never ceases to bring me to tears every time I read it. You really get a feel for the characters and what they're going through.

Tokyo Intermezzo by Genki Collective

  • Recommended by: Ech0Sierra
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When superstar pianist Yukari comes to town to play a concert with trumpet player Ia's orchestra, Ia - who's been a huge Yukari fan for years - is overjoyed at finally getting to meet her idol. But Ia never expected that their passing encounter would turn into so much more.
  • Pairings: Yuri Genre. Yukari/IA, GUMI/Lily. Warning: Not Safe for Work.
  • Comments: Modern Japan setting. Insane levels of research and world-building. Definitely Lemon, but the erotic scenes serve to drive the plot and definitely aren't pointless. Mood Whiplash is an understatement when it comes to this author, and strategic use of it along with cliffhangers is one of her greatest strengths. WARNING: NSFW Yuri Content.

Anew by Vocal Raynbow

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Today is the beginning." And it really was, wasn't it?
  • Pairings: Miku/Rin
  • Comments: This is how to do Mind Screw right. It's an insane fic that manages to combine tons of diverse elements that somehow make one crazy whole. It also has one of the best deconstructions of Love at First Sight ever and an ending that is…crazy in the best possible way.

  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Miku/Luka, Lily x Miki, and others.
  • Synopsis: It started with a ten-foot billboard, it followed with Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka working together, and it became so much more than they ever had thought it could be.
  • Comments: A really well-done drama that touches upon the good, the bad and the ugly about loving someone of the same gender. It's a dead fic at this point though but the last chapter ended on a good note so don't let it stop you from reading it. WARNING: NSFW Yuri Content

  • Synopsis: Every single day, at the same exact time, she walks into the campus mail room by herself, and every single day, she walks back out without a single letter in her hands. Luka wonders if maybe she can change that.
  • Comments: Loads of description porn from the author but I find that this is what separates this fanfic from the rest, and gives the fanfic a rather phantasmagorical feel.

A Twisted Kind of Love by testarossa

  • Pairings: Rin/Len
  • Sypnosis: Len starts to get an unhealthy obsession with Rin's beautiful smiles.
  • Comments: I've read this fic numerous times now and it still holds up as a very good yandere Len fic, with rather nice pacing on Len's descent into insanity, a good emphasis on Rin and Len's relationship and a brutal resolution. Definitely worth a read. WARNING: Somewhat explicit gore and violence, as well as heavy swearing from Meiko later on.

Project Negative-Zero by charcolor

  • Recommended by VanillaOwnsChocolate
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairings: Neru/Haku, minor Gumi/Lily in the background
  • Synopsis: After the owner and creator of Crypton Future Media passes on, Hatsune Miku inherits the key to the Crypton laboratory, leading to a discovery that will breathe new life and new love into the Crypton family.
  • Comments: While the main focus is on Neru and Haku's budding romance, the fanfic itself is part of an Expanded Universe called "Synthesized Civilization," in which vocal synths are androids who live among humans. Because of this, there's some neat lore and world-building within this fic that expands upon the lifestyles of other synths, like UTAUs and CeVIOs. And of course, Neru and Haku's developing relationship is adorable to watch, with smart and clever writing to boot. Definitely check out this fic whether you're a fan of the pairing or if you like lore in your Vocaloid fics.

Messenger (Cross-Posted on Wattpad) by TheLavenderNarwhal

  • Recommended by: Okida25
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "It's days like these that are the best. The sun was just starting to come up and the streets and squares were still clear from the usual crowds of people, leaving things uncharacteristically calm. Perfect for deliveries, Piko thought. Fewer people meant he could run as fast as he wanted without being a pain and without danger of crashing into a guard. They were already suspicious about his household."
  • Pairings: Flower/Piko
  • Tags: Royalty AU, Fluff, Light Angst, Mild Hurt/Comfort, Found Family
  • Comments: Holy cow, where to begin? First of all, the dialogue is rather in-character (according to me, at least), and the descriptions are solid. While it may seem like slowburn at first, it picks up post-Chapter 6. The author does list relevant warnings at the start of chapters with content that fit the warnings. While there is the occasional (thankfully rare) spelling error, over all, an enjoyable read. Small (unmarked, but just in case) warning for past character death in the flashback that tells Fukase's backstory in this fic, however. But all in all, a solid fanfic that is worth a try, especially if you like the ship.

Comics

Miku Plus by catstudio

  • Recommended By: arahman56
  • Synopsis: The day-to-day life of various Vocaloids living together, with guest appearances by Black★Rock Shooter and Leonidas.
  • Comments: It should be noted that it's drawn by a Thai artist, so it should be read like an English comic. Also, it does get suggestive at times.

Hoshi Meguri no Waltz by Gyari

  • Recommended by: Gunbazca
  • Synopsis: A Vocaloid-themed outlook of the 2011 Sendai Earthquake, combined with the Vocaloid song of the same title. Starring mainly Rin & Len. Also, this is Based on a True Story.
  • Comments: The art style is rather simplistic and rough-ish, but it carries the story well. The story is a good one, and carries a strong You Are Not Alone theme. While Meiko is portrayed in a rather unflattering light, Len more than makes up for picking up on Rin's well-being.
