    • Mostly short things, with some long fics or series like I'm Coming After You or Skin Hunger. If you ship Killervibe, or just want Cisco/Caitlin friendship and AU, she's a good place to start and stick with. Similar in tone and voice to the show—good humor, good tension, and great character dynamics.

    • Excellent for the Westhallen ot3, Mikkal writes a lot of AU fics with excellent characterization of Barry, Iris, and Eddie. They have a fantastic grasp of the characters, the relationships between all the characters, and portraying trauma and other topics beautifully. There's a lot to choose from, from close to canon settings to total fantasy AUs, all worth reading.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Flash Beginnings by Darkstride 0

  • Recommended by Dark Blake 3252
  • Status: Complete
  • Story-Summary: Can the fastest man alive reach his own past? Barry Allen is just a kid. He goes to high school and has romantic probs just like every kid. So how is it that a bolt of lightning hit him and now he's got superpowers? One thing's for sure he's got the power to save people and that isn't something that he can pass up not after losing both of his parents.
  • Summary: Barry gets struck by lightning way earlier than the show. Caitlin is a graduate from university at age 15. Cisco, the young prodigy to Dr. Wells. Harrison Wells a secretive guy intent on helping the Flash get to his best. Oh and Barry has a sister. Now that Barry has his powers he has to juggle a double life, and there’s an evil counterpart that wants to destroy the Flash.
  • Comments: It is obvious that the author has improved their writing style from the first chapter all the way to the present. But there are still mistakes here and there. Other than that I enjoy this and recommend to everyone else. Some things are realistic such as Barry not being able to control his powers properly and some casualties.

Take a Message by mosylu

  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: "What is this concerning, exactly?" "I can't tell you that." "Why not?" "Sir, HIPAA guidelines prohibit me - " "HIPAA?" "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of - " "I know what HIPAA stands for," Wells broke in. "Why the hell is it part of this conversation?"
  • Comments: Just a sweet little one-shot where Dr. Wells finds out that Cisco has cancer, and we see a softer side to his personality. There's also a sequel here.

Godspeed, Young Traveller by minazukihatta

  • Summary: When Oliver's timer finally zeroes out, it stops at a mysterious pizza boy with dark hair and sad eyes. But as Oliver spends more time about Barry Allen, he soon discovers that there is more to the boy than one would initially think. Meanwhile, men are being kidnapped from the streets and forced to fight in horrific gladiatorial fights.
  • Comments: An Alternate Universe fic that crosses over with Arrow.

Clowder of Chaos by Hedgi

  • Recommended by Windona
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Set before the Wells is Eobard reveal (will continue through to the end of the season with AUing) Barry walks into the cortex, and is met with Chaos. Adorable, adorable Chaos. Over two dozen metakittes worth of Chaos. Eobard's plans did not account for this. No one's plans accounted for this.
  • Comments: Yes, it's a 'what-if' which is 'what if a bunch of kittens with superpowers appeared and needed homes'. It does have its serious moments and plot, but it also has kittens that turn invisible, walk through walls, and can tell truth from lie. And they all affect the events of season 1.

  • Summary: Manipulating the emotions of others was a relatively simple thing, any halfway decent artist could do it.
  • Comments: This is an alternate universe story, set after 1x22 regarding the Flash's Rogues gallery. The story is in the perspective of Roy Bivolo, alias Rainbow Raider, and has no romantic focus. It expertly mixes humour and seriousness amongst the Rogues and is something that is very well written and enjoyable.

Don't Have Enough Rain by Mikkal.

  • Recommended by Ellowen
  • Status: Dormant; last updated February 2017
  • Summary: AU where Team Flash never actually formed and Metahumans have started vanishing at the hands of government agencies. "Three months ago, Clyde Mardon went crazy in the CCPD bullpen and eleven people died, twelve more went missing, and the world was violently exposed to the idea of metahumans. What the world doesn't know is that twelve people didn't just go missing. No, they were taken by the very people who are supposed to protect them: the government. Now, Cisco Ramon has been working hard trying to find his friend Bette and trying to expose the inhuman treatment of metahumans that he doesn't have proof of, but knows is going on. He's approached by two people who need his help finding their boyfriend and won't take no for an answer. Now, Mark Mardon is caught and shoved into the clutches of the government and he is personally exposed to the horrors his kind go through if they're slow enough to be caught.—or fast enough, it doesn't matter. Everyone is screwed either way."
  • Comments: some shipping (Westhallen with Ace!Barry), unfinished, but really well done. Chilling, very emotional, and a very neat take on the AU. We get enough info to put things together without having to be led by the hand, it's very natural. Doesn't just focus on Barry, but looks at other Metas (Including Bette!) and sympathizers on the outside like Cisco and team Arrow.

Containment by SimplyMe51

  • Recommended by Marcus S Lazarus
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: AU. Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein are stable from their first fusion, without the need of a quantum splicer, but that doesn't mean either Ronnie or Martin has any idea of what is going on. Or that they're even capable of unmerging.
  • Comments: Does a fantastic job of making Firestorm the 'first' metahuman of S.T.A.R. Labs rather than the Flash, as Ronnie and Stein coordinate their efforts to explore what happened to them and contact their respective families and colleagues to find a solution.
    • Also has two sequels exploring Firestorm's impact on S.T.A.R. Labs in greater detail, leading up to Barry regaining consciousness and Ronnie and Martin encouraging Barry to tell Iris the truth; Binding Energy and Chain Reaction.

Flash Fire by DarkElements10.

  • Recommended by babyj
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Even though her life as a normal human ended in a flash of heat, the fire in her heart continued to burn. The arrival of the fire metahuman, Cadence Nash, brings the arrival of a sinister criminal organization that's closer to Barry and S.T.A.R. Labs than originally thought. Especially when he becomes her new target. But is she really evil? Her connection to Harrison Wells creates a stir among the others with the mysteriousness of her past. Then there's Barry, who's sudden side-effects of his powers is causing him to put himself into even more danger than ever expected. Wasn't having the power of speed supposed to help him? With secrets and lies abound it'll take everything for Team Flash to figure out what's the truth and who their real enemy is. The Flash is about to get burned.
  • Comments: There is a bit of shipping and ship-teasing (SnowWells, Olicity, Ciscette, some one-sided WestAllen)and written very well. Takes the idea of an enemy infiltrating Team Flash once meeting Barry. Focuses on Barry and the OC in a natural way. Very emotional at times. Brings in Team Arrow as a big plot point once they appear. Now with four sequels. Crossfire(Complete), Fuel To The Fire(Complete), Friction(Complete), and Burn (Ongoing).
  • The series now has it's own fanfic page. The Flash and The Flame series

In a Flash by DarkElements10.

  • Recommended by babyj
  • Status: Completed
  • Summary: [Set after “The Flash is Born] “A picture is worth a thousand words, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.” Barry has kept his sights on finding the man who killed his mom. All Averey wanted to do was find her biological father. When Barry comes across a new Metahuman with telescopic vision and a photographic memory, everything about the life he knew gets thrown out of focus. The smallest move, the smallest decision can change the resolution of your life from in focus to blurry all in a flash.
  • Comments: There are plenty of stories where a OC is added as a sibling to a canon character but this one takes a cue from The Flash comics so it's not entirely implausible. The plot of good vs. evil and brainwashing is rampant in this one and handled well.
  • Now with a sequel. Out of Focus (Ongoing).

The Mark of Sage by Crystal Manning.

  • Recommended by babyj
  • Status: Dormant
  • Summary: Sage Moreaux has always been level-headed and remained cool under pressure. But when it's found that the effects of the particle accelerator explosion had a wider reach than expected, she finds herself skating on thin ice as she tries to make sense of her now altered life. After all, it's not every day you have a psycho with a freeze ray and a strange obsession on your tail. Right?
  • Comments: One of the great things about this story is that because the OC is a relative of Iris, we get more of a fleshed out character of Iris West. Not to mention more insight into Leonard Snart as well. It's a nice change to see the focus on those two characters around the OC but Barry isn't ignored for it.

One Second by Pennflinn

  • Recommended by Ellowen
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: "Since learning about time travel, Barry had been thinking a lot about parallel universes. Just as he blacked out, he was decided: this was, definitively, the worse one." A glimpse into different ways the fight with Eiling in 1x14 might have gone, the main storyline being Barry's abduction and the frantic rescue mission on behalf of Team Flash.
  • Comments: a lot of Barry whump and a chillingly dark look at what Eiling wants with metas. its technically several stories within one, and some are much darker than others. beautifully written and really draws on the bonds that Cisco, Caitlin, and Barry share.

  • Status: Completed
  • Summary: If there's one thing Iris used to be sure of, it's that she knows Barry Allen, inside and out. But the revelation of Savitar's true identity calls that fundamental cornerstone of her life into question. Frustrated and desperate, she decides to confront Savitar on her own terms.

more than one truth by JaggedCliffs

  • Status: Completed
  • Summary: Instead of being shot, Savitar is sucked back into the Speed Force during his fight with Team Flash. But since he never existed in the first place, Barry still has to fill the prison. They're both there for a reason, because the Speed Force never does anything without a purpose. Barry and Savitar have unfinished business with each other, and the Speed Force wants them to finish it.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

The Poisoned Chalice by ladyofpride and theoneandonlyzoom

  • Status: Dormant; last updated December 2017
  • Pairing(s): Barry Allen/Earth-1 Hunter Zolomon
  • Summary: A series of stories detailing the growing relationship between Barry Allen and the Earth-1 counterpart of Hunter Zolomon. Methuselah covers how they got together, while Typhon and Echidna deal with the Myth Arc involving Zoom's activities on Earth-1.
  • Comments: For a series of stories that focus on what is basically a Crack Ship, they're surprisingly well-done. The romance between Barry and Hunter is believable and sweet, and the plot of the next two stories is particularly gripping, especially when you learn that Zoom is Not Quite Dead. There is some light lemon sprinkled here and there, though nothing too graphic.

Call Me Kara by Speedforce 1229

  • Recommended by Phantom Prince
  • Status: Completed
  • Pairing(s): Barry Allen/Kara Danvers
  • Summary : Betrayed by her own world and left for dead an old friend arrives to save Kara from death. Deciding she has had enough of risking her life for others, Kara starts a brand new life with new love and new friends, leaving Supergirl behind forever. With her new friends comes new trouble and she finds leaving Supergirl behind isn't as easy at it sounds.
  • Comments: A story that focuses on the universes presented in both Supergirl (2015) and The Flash (2014), the main focus of the story is the romance between Barry and Kara, but it has plots that are based in a masterful understanding of the DC Universe.

  • Summary: In an alternate universe both Barry and Kara exist together. This is what happens when they meet in college and fall in love. Follow them, their family, and friends through life from college years to being superheroes and beyond. This is Karry Universe.
  • Comments: A great story in which the author has build it's own multiverse around it. And each of those other worlds have their own stories to tell. So start with this story before you read the rest of the universe build by the author.

  • Summary: Barry Allen is a CSI working to free his father. Iris West is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist with a secret. Multichapter AU. Barry will become the Flash...eventually. Appearances from Team Arrow and characters from wider DC universe.

That Mood Indigo by gnimaerd

  • Pairing(s): Barry Allen/Iris West
  • Summary: Set in a diner 1947; Iris is a waitress and aspiring novelist, Barry is her favourite customer. Anything else between them would be illegal. But in the face of overwhelming prejudice against her, Iris dares to dream, and write, and fall in love.
  • Authors's Note: Warning: at the risk of stating the obvious, this fic deals with racism. I didn't use any actual slurs worse than 'girl', but worse are alluded to and in the third chapter there will be one specific incident of racial abuse described, though it isn't violent. I tried to keep the actual tone of this story fairly light and whimsical, close to that of the show itself, but I couldn't avoid the realities of what life for a young black woman in America in 1947 would have been like (nor would it have been honourable of me to do so). Iris and millions of others like her would have had to deal with an overwhelming deluge of racist, sexist bigotry on a daily basis, and I tried to address that reality as respectfully as possible from my position as a white writer creating fanfic about TV/comic book characters.

  • Summary: Since being dumped by Eddie, Iris does not have time for any romantic complications in her life. So it seems a perfect solution to start a casual, no-strings-attached thing with Barry Allen, secret sex god from high school, especially since everyone knows he's in love with another girl on campus. Seriously, there's no way this is going to get complicated.

  • Pairing(s): Barry Allen/Iris West
  • Summary: Iris should have known broadcast journalism would be a mistake. In fact, if she had just stayed the course she wouldn’t even be on TV at all. Iris would be hiding behind her computer in relative obscurity writing for a newspaper or, more likely, an online publication. God, if she had a time machine. As it is, she’s sitting at her stupid desk in front of her stupid fake backdrop at 3 AM trying not to sound like she’s contemplating quitting on air in a blaze of glory. Barry Allen, it turns out, is a breath of fresh air.
