Kieran Walker

  • Recommended by: Mr Death
  • Comments: Not, strictly speaking, a fic about the Dresden characters, but set in a version of their world. Two fics, so far, starring Ramona Slater, a private eye with a fallen angel riding shotgun in her head. In Oncoming Morning, when she's confronted with a mystery that threatens her city, she finds herself unraveling a secret about the nature of her world. In Divergence, Ramona finds herself the target of hitters both supernatural and mundane, and has to figure out just who wants her head on a platter while she faces unpleasant questions about her bond with one of the Fallen. Well written in detective noir style, Walker's prose is evocative and engaging. Note: Contains adult situations and language; nothing explicit, but implicit as hell.

  • Comments: Little Chicago has written a brilliant five part series (now complete!) that is honestly the best Dresden fic I have ever seen, as well as one of the best in general. The tone, writing and characterization are as close to perfectly Original Flavor as it is possible to get, and the fics are suitably awesome. The series takes place soon after Turn Coat, and so far it seems to be an AU ignoring Changes. So good, I wasted a large amount of time just sitting, reading madly until I finished the entire series in one sitting. Very highly recommended.
    • Seconded. I wouldn't be surprised if he was revealed to be Butcher himself, that's how good he is. He has also written a novella length story called Game Face that explores events after Skin Game, even taking into account what little we know about the next book: Peace Talks. As good as it gets, ladies and gentlemen.

Thomas A

  • Recommended by: Regina Titania
  • Comments: Thomas A has written a brilliant novel-length series (the latest of which is a WIP) which shares Harry's laughable sense of humour. We have The Carpenter Blueprints, a whole series of fics centered around Molly Carpenter, apprentice to Chicago's only professional wizard private investigator. In Axis and Allies, we see Molly Carpenter striking out on her own to save the day when the wizard's away against a few Nazi sorcerers, golems and an Outsider. Semper Fidelis shows us our perky wizard apprentice racing against the clock to stop a faerie war from starting after an assassination attempt on the Summer Lady and Knight. A great read when you're waiting for Ghost Story is the third installment, Life After Death.
    • Overall, a must-read for fans of The Dresden Files. We see Molly, perky wizard apprentice, strike out as an independent contractor when Harry's away...and we can tell that Harry's a pretty good/bad influence on Molly too. Indeed, even when facing against an Outsider, or the pissed-off Lady of the Summer Storm the Abagalesidhe, Molly still quips pop culture references into their faces and saves the day...albeit with less Dresdenesque shenanigans.
      • Eh, this is a serious case of YMMV. I couldn't get into the first one, because Thomas A is apparently incapable of using contractions.
      • Seconded. Bad grammar and insane walls of run-on text make this unintelligible.
      • Thirded. These fanfics are really quite terrible. In my opinion. So... when will this be zapped?
    • Not going to disagree that the grammar needs work, but the stories themselves are original and are definitely worth a try.
    • I LIKED the fics. The characters are well-written, the villians are epic without being intrusive on canon, and you can definitely tell the amount of effort that Thomas A put into making a great story and in making the characters in-character.

    General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Arcana by BlueKiwi

  • Recommended by: Prefixmancer
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: The story of Justin's adoption and raising of Elaine, from Elaine's POV.
  • Comments: While the mood of this fic is far quieter and more personal than a typical DF story, it suits the story perfectly. The young Elaine manages to be both interesting and like an actual child of her age, and Harry... Harry is exactly what you would expect him to be like as a kid.

Big Girls Don't Cry by shiplizard

  • Recommended by: JtheDrafter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Molly and Luccio discuss trauma and sexual desire, and Luccio helps Molly deal. Spoilers for Small Favor.
  • Comments: This fic examines a facet of the story that the novels didn't even consider: having a psychic impression hijack Molly's senses and force an orgasm on her is flat-out disturbing, and Harry's ban on both sex and masturbation only made things harder to deal with. Luckily for Molly, Luccio is in a position to help.

Bridal Shower by Thrythlind

  • Recommended by: bissek
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It started out with a simple case to find a missing knife. Then Dresden got called in to look at a corpse that had fangs and no blood in its body. Now he found himself walking into a case the White Council thought it had closed centuries before.
  • Comments: The story captures the feel of the Dresden universe beautifully. Mouse seems to be enjoying the status he attains during the fic far too much.

Broken Mirror by LittleChicago

  • Recommended by: SurtrNoir
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: What started as a small fic it converted in an entire AU series of small novels about the favorite Wizard for Hire. After Turn Coat Harry receives a desperate call from Kincaid. Ivy has been kidnapped again and it rest into Harry and Company to save her before is too late.
  • Notes: First in the Broken series, it is followed by Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Broken Spirit, Broken Chains, and Broken Circle.
  • Comments: Is a magnificent story, capturing the nonsensical, wry humor and horrific dramatic flair of the original works. You really can feel the true essence of Harry in every line, his sardonic humor and the huge scope of the supernatural world. Time travel, the other vampire courts, the Black Council, eons long plots, the Outer beings, enemies from the past looking for revenge—it has it all. While it started small, it has expanded to another 5 fics, each one adding a new layer of the plots and lies that is about to culminate in the last instalment, Broken Circle. A must read, if only to get an idea of how to write the third person Noir-esque monologue of the Dresden-verse.

Dead Man's Witch by Gimme Mocha

  • Recommended by: Draconm
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Grace Bowden, small-time Chicago witch, is contacted to help with a ghost problem. She just wants to help the boy-ghost, but when her path crosses that of Harry Dresden, she'll need more than good intentions to get out of it alive. Set during Dead Beat!
  • Comments: A highly underrated piece of fanfiction. Though it is OC centric, the new character easily fits into the Dresden story, giving a good view of how people see Dresden from the outside, and how the smaller powers sometimes live. It also has a sequel, which occurs during White Night.

Dress Up by Qualapec the She-Wolf

  • Recommended by: Anti Jack, Baron Praxis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Molly plays dress up. Because we all know the duster is the coolest part of the outfit.
  • Comments: A short and hilarious fic. You just know Molly couldn't resist doing this at least once.

  • Synopsis: Character study of Michael Carpenter.
  • Comments: For 370 words it's extraordinarily heart wrenching and gut punching.

The Fable Of Joyful Wing by shiplizard

  • Recommended by: Razorsmile, Zysek, Pencilneckgeek, RaineyH
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It started when I was reading 'Bridge of Birds' and enjoying the names of the characters. Pretty Ping, Miser Shen, Fang's Flea and Fang's Fawn— and the narrator, Number Ten Ox. Descriptive and enjoyable. And then I started making up Chinese-Fable names for Dresden Files characters. And then I had to put a story to the names. And then ten thousand words later I'd written a quest fable with a bunch of references to other books and movies because why not.
  • Comments: AU set in a magical ancient China. Pure unbridled brilliance.
    • Seconded by Zysek. This is made of WIN.
    • Thirded by Pencilneckgeek. Prose is quite good, even elegant. Narrator's voice strikes a good balance between Dresden and Number Ten Ox. Plot owes more to Hughart, perhaps, but that's fine. I loved it.

Fair Vote by Nick Chiseler

  • Recommended by: pluma, RazorSmile
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The story isn't about Dresden. It's about a runaway wizard apprentice, George Saga, who, in the process of disentangling himself from a star-crossed selkie, ends up lost within the dark alleys of Miami politics. With a twist of demon.
  • Comments: This author's worldbuilding is simply amazing. He seamlessly inserts his OC (possibly the coolest OC I've ever read) into the Dresdenverse. The writing captures the dry humor and sheer "O SHI-" of canon, and it shows that everything bad doesn't always happen to Harry. Also: this is a long fic. Over 120,000 words. And well worth the read.
    • Novel-length work in pdf format, this tells the tale of a runaway wizard apprentice, George Saga (True Name something else). Through some fault of his own, Dorje (he's from Tibet) gets himself involved with selkies, White Court, demon-enhanced lawyers, the differences between Asian magical traditions and the Western variant we've seen so much of in canon, Red Court, certain prominent figures in organized crime, dark wizards ... and Miami politicians. In other words, shenanigans worthy of Harry Dresden himself. Highly recommended.

Famous Last Words by IncandescentKitsune

  • Recommended by: TempusCorvus, fortyCakes, Milarqui
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Harry and his friends are captured by Nicodemus, Harry ends up choosing some rather...odd last words.
  • Comments: Crackfic of the best sort. It's short, and hilarious. I could say more, but I'd spoil it.
    • Thirded by Milarqui, who can only complain about the fact that it ignores one of the Dresdenverse's rules - the really bad guys never catch Harry's cultural references.

From All Around You by Kali Cephirot

  • Recommended by: Catinthewall
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The previous Archive hires Kincaid to take care of her unborn daughter.
  • Comments: An adorable warm and fuzzy story about Ivy's early childhood.

Good Timing by A Wandering Ministrel

  • Recommended by: Jack Inqu, Sinesofinsanity, Rookencounte
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Most dangerous job in the world? Alaskan crab fisherman have nothing on members of Harry Dresden's army.
  • Comments: A small slice of adventure set between White Night and Small Favor. Includes Harry, Thomas, Murphy, Ramirez, Molly, and Mouse. Really captures the tone of the novels, and more than that, how messy a car chase would get when there's magic involved.
    • Seconded by Sinesofinsanity who goes through moments of not being able to remember whether or not this scene was written by Jim Butcher.
    • Thirded by Rookencounte who went through three different anthologies of fantasy stories before remembering that it was a fanfic.

Life in Medieval Chicago by melannen

  • Synopsis: So I'm the only spiritwalker north of the Oyo who has no village and works only for hire. I'm not proud of that, but despite what the priests might tell you, the medicine paths still work when you walk them for pay. And a man's gotta eat.
  • Comments: AU set in the geographical location of Chicago ... circa 800 AD. Hilarious yet meticulously researched fun.

The Other Son by Priscellie

  • Recommended by: Kat

A Personage of Noble Rank and Title by Priscellie

  • Recommended by: GG Crono, Locnil, Fille De Marius
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The story of Warden Donald Morgan, from his early life to his term as a soldier during the Great War up to the events of the books, shedding a bit of light on his life, his motivations, and his hatred for Harry.
  • Comments:
    • Seconded by Locnil. I honestly did not see the twist ending coming, and a great job was done explaining why Morgan hated Dresden so much (as well as Morgan's behavior in Summer Knight). Also a decent romance story, and a nice bit of Fridge Brilliance about Morgan and Dresden in Turn Coat.
    • Thirded by Fille De Marius. It is excellent and every word is worth your time.

Reunion by Elizabeth Leah

  • Recommended by: DARTHYAN, Silverwind 91
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Maggie has known who her father was for five years. When she finally confronts him, she's only given reason to hate him. But what happens when the only man who can help her and her school is her father? Takes place twenty years after the events of Changes.
  • Notes: Has a sequel, And Now We Dance (Dead).
  • Comments: A gut-punching story based around a great concept. The interactions between Harry and Maggie are phenomenally well-written, especially when Maggie reveals that she still had nightmares from her time as a Red Court captive, as well as her anger when Harry confesses to killing Susan. The Harry Potter jokes are also pretty funny and well placed, and Maggie is a well fleshed out character.
    • YMMV, some of the early writing is VERY flawed.

Cold Nights by Ginipig

  • Recommended by: RaineyH
  • Status: Complete (a little under 60,000 words)
  • Pairing: Molly/Carlos (Dresden/Murphy in the background)
  • Synopsis: Carlos is back in Chicago, getting brought up to speed on the events of the last few books, and bumps into Winter Lady Molly. Things get complicated and NSFW. Spoilers up through Skin Game.
  • Comments: Brilliantly written, very sweet, and extremely in character. Also an interesting (and plausible) exploration of how inexperienced kids with scary powers might find it challenging to get it on without crippling each other.

Cross by lightgetsin

  • Recommended by: Lucy Zephyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: "Because," Dresden said, "you're going to bring me back." He hesitated, looking somewhat sour. "You're the only one who can, apparently."
  • Comments: Thank you, LGI. Now, no matter how awesome Ghost Story is, it will pale in comparison to this fic. Cross is a post-Changes story about Harry being dead and Marcone having to bring him back. Except how it's really not. As thefourthvine put it: "To me, this story is basically an exercise in examining how many layers of denial you can plaster over yourself before you crack into a million pieces. Answer: John Marcone is nearly there." Fucking phenomenal character examination, dealing with all the baggage that is often ignored in canon and fanon. Check. This. Out.

Dry Bones Can Harm No One by binz and shiplizard

  • Recommended by: RazorSmile
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: Post-apocalyptic Chicago: Harry Dresden, the itinerant Winter Knight, is contacted by the errant Sheriff Karrin Murphy. Something is brutally murdering people in Wisconsin, and the local militia is driving off anyone who tries to check it out. It's up to Harry to root out the threat— and figure out where his loyalties lie, between the Faerie Court he sold himself to, and the people he's always tried to save.
  • Notes: Part of the Not Even Silence in Chicago series.
  • Comments: Set apparently post-Changes and definitely post-apocalypse, this fic is detailed, thorough and true in the ways the characters all react to the changed setting. The Black Court is making a huge comeback, the Summer/Winter/Wyldfae balance of power is being ... renegotiated, the Ways are now the only practical means of long-distance travel which in turn makes Wizards incredibly precious and so on. It's quite the doorstopper too. Some readers might not like some of the changes to Harry's behavior (specifically his sexuality) albeit most of that is lightly-referenced backstory. There is action and darkness, hope and romance, tragedy and characterization and creatures we haven't seen so far in the canon books (the Wendigo was especially well-done Nightmare Fuel). Highly recommended.

Eats, Shoots, and Leaves by binz and shiplizard

  • Recommeded by: Lucy Zephyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Harry/The Erlking, Harry/Kincaid
  • Synopsis: Harry is invited to dinner and a show, not entirely in that order.
  • Comments: Awesome, hilarious look at a possible Knight Harry who's gotten over some of his Issues with sexuality and chastity. Started the fandom trend of Winter Bike Harry, and is still probably the best of that fic type. Most of binz and shiplizard's work explores concepts regarding sex positivity; this is the most well-known of that collection. Check it out.

Enemy Mine by Rassaku

  • Recommended by: RazorSmile, Lucy Zephyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: Harry gets invited on a date by everyone's favorite mob boss, and then things get weird.
  • Comments: Diverges from canon after Small Favor but echoes some of the events of Turn Coat (like the Harry/Demonreach OTP). Harry goes on a date with Marcone. Marcone arranges to have himself framed for Harry Dresden's death the next day. Then things get really weird. Features some of the best OCs I've seen in the fandom thus far (Tam Veda and the Big Bad are especially worthy of note) and is just incredibly well-written and interesting. Strongly recommended; wish the author would archive it on or AO3 for easier reading though.
    • Seconded like the fist of an angry god. Especially about the A03 thing. I need this on my Kindle, guys. You don't understand. This fic is very strong plot-wise, very Original Flavor, and manages the hottest UST you've ever read. It's incredible. -Lucy Zephyr

Following the Evil Overlord List by Jade_Dragoness

  • Recommended by: RazorSmile
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: Evil AU. Where all the good guys are bad and the bad guys are good for the most part, and inhuman monsters are still monsters. In this 'verse, Evil!Harry sees Marcone's soul and really wants to make him his.
  • Comments: Retells the events of Storm Front in a world where Maggie LeFay outlived Malcolm Dresden, Harry is a wealthy warlock who models his life on the Evil Overlord List, Murphy is as corrupt as they come (albeit just as badass as in canon) and Marcone is an agent of the FBI. Essentially crack fic but a lot of fun.

Letter from the Front by JRush

  • Recommended by: frankystein123
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Harry/Luccio
  • Synopsis: This takes place before White Knight. Harry is off on one of his Red Court expiditions and finds something strange in the jungle.
  • Comments: Have you ever wondered exactly what happened at Camp Kaboom? Now you know. There aren't a lot of decent fanfics detailing Harry's and Anastasia's relationship, but should had deserved more attention in the books. Rest assured though, that their relationship is the background story (so far) compared to the adventure-type overall story. The story has some dark moments, but is nicely balanced out by the occasional quip and humour.

The Matter of Chicago by Lucy Zephyr

  • Recommended by: Anon, openseseme, Regina Titania
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Another way the Baron rose to power. Another way the wizard became a Knight. This is what happens when you take your lessons in heroism from Machiavelli and Vetinari.
  • Comments: A fic that reads like one of the books, and has already passed 130K words. Slow-building, funny, and every bit as awesome as canon. Marcone gets Harry to sign on with him in Fool Moon.
    • One of the sexiest slash stories this troper has ever read, as well as being well thought out and funny. A must read for any Harry/Marcone shipper!

The Spirit and the Letter by lightgetsin

  • Recommended by: Ikki, Lucy Zephyr
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: Harry Dresden fails Gender Studies 101, and that doesn't change when he temporarily swaps sexes.
  • Comments:
    • About The Spirit and the Letter: Genderswap story that turned out to be both hilarious and hot. Must warn potential readers that the sex in this story is between girl!Harry and Marcone and not boy!Harry. Spoilers for Changes.
    • About A New Covenant: A continuation of the first story, this one does an even more thorough job of examining Dresden and Marcone and how the two co-exist. It's intense and a beautifully handled slow progression. Harry's POV is as pitch-perfect as ever, and the addition of Marcone's POV is handled equally well. Very worth checking out.

The Stars and Scones Bakery and Coffee Shop by Lucy Zephyr

  • Recommended by: FlatJean
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Harry/Marcone
  • Synopsis: In which Harry is the best baker in Chicago, but still ends up starting a few fires along the way.
  • Comments: This is a modern-day non-magical AU where Harry own and operates the coolest bakery in Chicago, with Bob his trusty barista, his loyal customers like Murphy and that annoying sonofagun Marcone who keeps on coming back. Otherwise a story where amidst cupcakes you have Harry trying to cope with his traumatic past as a survivor of abuse. This isn't a WAAAANGST fic but it's a careful, thoughtful mediation on how people cope with trauma amidst some great characterization.
    • Author here. Deeply flattered, thank you. Wanted to point out the Archive of Our Own version over here. It's a revised copy, so best to read from there. Again, thanks! 8D

Accidents Happen by metisket

  • Recommended by: Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Synopsis: "No matter where I go," Ed said thoughtfully, "there’s a goddamn pyromaniac there waiting for me." It’s not so much the strange children falling from the sky that are worrying Harry. It’s more that the children don’t seem to think the situation is all that weird.

Beyond the Outer Gate Lies... by gabriel blessing

  • Recommended by: The 17th Immortal, Kalaong, Robinton
  • Crossover with: High School D×D
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Harry Dresden had thought he'd seen it all. So had the voice inside his head for that matter. But when one of his all too typical wild weekends ends up with him stranded far outside the Outer Gates, beyond the stretch of even creation itself, he finds out that there are other things out there, laying in wait. Still doesn't make it any easier to make rent on time though...
  • Comments: Admittedly inspired by Devil You Know, and written by the same mind that gave us The Hill of Swords and In Flight, this fic takes the Harry Dresden from later into the books (rather than sixteen and just starting out, with all the special powers and neat tricks and experience that this implies), and drops him straight into the High School D×D world. A world where, in GB's own words, "Fallen Angel doesn't mean creature older than time and darker than how I take my coffee." Hilarity and Mirror Universe Hijinks Ensue.
    • If you've read the hate for GB's other works and didn't get it, reading this should help. Major character and continuity issues.
    • The above troper is exaggerating. There are a few problems, but this is some of Gabe's best work.
    • Seconded; this fanfic is hilarious and keeps Harry's Crazy Awesomeness fully intact, with his narration being written well enough to where I couldn't tell the difference between it and his native books narrations. Can't speak on the DXD elements but the fic made me care about most of them, and I haven't even read their series. There is a bit of alternate continuity going on at the beginning, be warned as the author happily indulges in a bit of guessing as to the Dresden series's eventual ending in order to bring Lash back, but it goes towards the purpose of furthering his interactions with the devils through her help, and since the author apparently wants this to take place after the Dresden series ends you can broad strokes the details of her resurrection in your own head enough to mostly ignore it — after establishing the fic's own continuity, everything remains tightly written. An extremely good read.
    • Anti-seconded. It's like someone removed all the depth from Dresden's character and replaced it with awkwardness and lust. As he's not mentally been deaged, it is not at all in character. And the never-ending UST between him and teenage girls is pretty squicky.
    • Re-Seconded. Thirded? While Harry does have an influx of awkwardness, it's from being deaged back to his teens. Right in the middle of puberty, and with all of the hormones that entail.

Chaos Reigns by Nimbus Llewelyn

  • Recommended by: DarkPhoenix94, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with: Marvel Universe
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This is a Noodle Incident expanded upon: Wanda Maximoff comes to Chicago looking for Harry Dresden's help. What for? Well, there's an infestation of N'Garai demons in town, commanded a General of their kind. And if they aren't stopped it could mean the end of the world.
  • Notes: This is a side story of Child of the Storm.
  • Comments: while it can be read on its own, the author strongly recommends reading the main story first to avoid confusion/being spoiled. As for the story itself, the author neatly captures the tone of The Dresden Files and clearly knows his stuff. It also teases a thoroughly unique pairing Harry Dresden/Wanda Maximoff. Also worthy of note is the inclusion of Bruce Wayne as Harry Dresden's apprentice (as yet unmagical - and Word of God suggests that he's going to stay that way - though this doesn't seem to stop him getting into trouble), Harry having been around when Joe Chill tried to rob the Waynes. Needless to say, this ended very badly for Joe Chill.
    • As far as The Dresden Files is concerned, it should be noted that it is set between Blood Rites and Dead Beat, but with a couple of changes: Harry has an apprentice, albeit one without magic (he's learning the detective side of things, and is apparently a whiz at magical theory), he's not got the hang up about fire magic thanks to some psychic counselling from Charles Xavier (SHIELD put them in touch) and due to a Near-Death Experience in the main story, he's brought in his new shield bracelet and force rings early.
    • It should also be noted that Dresden goes on a couple of brief monologues explaining things that most fans already know. Word of God explains this as being for the benefit of those who've read Child of the Storm and don't know Dresden so well.

Deep as the Sea by Ryuugi

  • Recommended by: Salvls
  • Crossover with: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
  • Status: Dormant
  • Sypnosis: 'And I've removed the filter from your eyes which covered them before, so now, you'll easily distinguish between gods and men.' After the power of the Mist began to weaken, the demigods found themselves in the middle of a whole new world.
  • Comments: YMMV heavily. Much more of a Percy Jackson fic than a DF one (main characters from the Dresden-verse have yet to appear), the characters are pretty much godmodding (pardon the pun).
    • Ryuugi has stated that Dresden will be appearing in a chapter 6 or 7, when the plot for Summer Knight begins. And to be fair, with the capabilities of Camp Half-Blood, godmodding is inevitable, at least at first. Remains to be seen if it'll disappear later on, as the other supernatural react to the new players.

The Denarian Renegade by Shezza

  • Recommended by: Jinx, Looney Toons
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: By the age of seven, Harry Potter hated his home, his relatives and his life. However, an ancient demonic artefact has granted him the powers of a Fallen and now he will let nothing stop him in his quest for power
  • Notes: Has two sequels, The Denarian Knight (Complete) and The Denarian Lord (Complete), as well as a collection of omakes, The Denarian Omakes (Complete).
  • Comments: Harry is delightfully snarky and beautifully balanced between good and evil. It also has the best written Dumbledore I've ever read.
    • Revlid: Please note that your mileage may heavily vary with this story—Harry Potter is a fairly blatant Mary Sue, and his "snark" mostly comes across as simply being rude and mindlessly arrogant, which aren't appealing traits for the main character of a story spanning 30+ chapters to begin with. The final twist in the first story is also eye-rollingly stupid; see "Mary Sue". In short, if you're hoping for Harry's attitude or the attitudes of others toward him to change in any way from the first few chapters onward... Look elsewhere.
    • It's also worth noting that, while this story is worth a read, it's not really a The Dresden Files story. It has a few Dresden characters in it, but most are either OCs or badly OOC by virtue of not existing when the story started.
    • However, in response to Revlid, the story does not claim that Harry is in fact a Deadpan Snarker. It is very clear that he's just an arrogant kid, and most of the other characters (especially his Denarian) note that "you know, just saying that Dumbledore is a pedophile who has sex with a turkey isn't actually funny"; he himself notes that he doesn't actually do sardonic too well. He also couldn't easily be described as a Mary Sue: At best he's overconfident and frequently gets his arse kicked; at worst he's an unsympathetic Jerkass who few people like particularly and who isn't shilled by the author or other characters.

Devil You Know by Surarrin

  • Recommended by: throwaawy, piattish
  • Crossover with: High School D×D
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: My day had started on a down note. First Elaine had been sick, then I found out my mentor wanted to shove me in a straitjacket. It shouldn't have been a surprise when I died. But, nothing could have prepared me for my life being saved by a devil—or becoming one myself. Still, the magical girl was the biggest surprise.
  • Comments: Not a crackfic, but: "You're going to get a magical wand and you're going to like it." 'Nuff said.
    • A well-done fusion of the settings, with a demonstrated willingness to defy The Stations of the Canon. Narrated by Harry, but taking place mostly though not only in the DxD side of things.

The Dresden Fillies by psychicscubadiver

  • Recommended by: omegaman, Robinton
  • Crossover with: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis:
    • The Dresden Fillies: Strange Friends After the events of The Dresden Files #4: Summer Knight (and between the events of MLP seasons 1 and 2), Harry Dresden is traveling through the Nevernever and finds himself chased by a pack of monsters and, making a Blind Jump between dimensions, arrives in Equestria. After the initial Fish out of Water comedy, the story gets more serious — as it turns out, even a Sugar Bowl like Equestria may sometimes need the skills of one such as Harry. (Complete)
    • The Dresden Fillies: False Masks After the events of The Dresden Files #6: Blood Rites and two Equestrian months after Strange Friends, Harry has been invited back to Equestria to be formally thanked for his actions in his previous trip. Unfortunately, an Ancient Tradition has gotten wind of his visit, and is certain that he represents the return of an Evil long since past. Also, since the thanking is to be in public, Harry is gonna have to make certain "adaptations" for his stay in Equestria. (Complete)
    • The Dresden Fillies: Great Power After the events of The Dresden Files #8: Proven Guilty (and between the events of MLP seasons 2 and 3), the Mane Six and Spike, not having seen Harry for a while, decide to go to Earth to find him instead. Things go wrong almost instantly. (Dormant)
    • The Dresden Fillies: Extra Stuff A collection of non-canonnote  Bonus Material. (Dormant)
  • Comments: A fantastic fic. Dresden's characterization is absolutely spot on, almost perfect. All of his character attributes, his snarkiness, loyalty to his friends, his Good Is Not Nice attitude, and his struggles with darkness, are exquisitely captured. Seriously, it has to be read to be believed. The Dresden-centric parts of the story almost read like Butcher's prose. Having not seen the show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic myself, I cannot speak on whether or not the ponies' characterization is as good as Dresden's, but as characters who have real personalities and contribute to the story psychicscubadiver writes them quite well.

The Dresden Omens by shiplizard

  • Recommended by: kph2pt0, piattish, RaineyH
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Good Omens
  • Synopsis: In which a demon (who did not fall from grace so much as saunter vaguely downward) is sent to tempt a hero (who's reluctant at best) and has some trouble with the job.
  • Comments: Contains a surprise pairing (Harry/Marcone), and a fusion of Jim Butcher's snarky humor and Good Omens' wit. The crossover is well done and the characters are portrayed perfectly.
    • Er... Have you seen the Shipping section? Ain't no surprise pairing there.
      • The fic in question was among the first slash fics to be written in the entire fandom and possibly the first with that pairing.
      • This, and the fact that the pairing is sort of sprung at you at the end, and there's very little hint of it until that point. (The suddenness is plot-related, rather than an Ass Pull.)

The Endless Pantheon series by Todeswind

  • Recommended by: Milarqui, Othor_the_cute
  • Crossover with: Stargate SG-1
  • God's Eye: The first story in the series.
    • Synopsis: Harry Dresden gets misplaced after the events of the Darkhallow. Suffice it to say tossed to the edge of the galaxy, he still manages to stir up trouble. After all, the universe exists to trouble Harry Dresden.
    • Status: Complete
  • Shattering Occam's Razor: A side story taking place at the same time as God's Eye.
    • Synopsis: This story is a companion piece to my story, God's Eye, told from the perspective of SG-1 as they find themselves coping with all manner of supernatural complications to their war with the Goa'uld.
    • Status: Complete
  • God's Blood: A sequel to God's Blood taking place roughly one year later.
    • Synopsis: Godhood has not simplified the life of Harry Dresden. Between his war with the Titan Chronos, the Feminicidal God Moloch, and a cavalcade of nastuness from before the dawn of time you'd think it couldn't get any worse. Unfortunately for Harry, Mab is more than happy to shake things up.
    • Status: Complete
  • Manifest Disaster: A side story taking place at the same time as God's Blood.
    • Synopsis: Stargate Command has changed since the near disastrous Foothold situation one year ago but their mission remains the same. When an SG team is stranded on a hostile planet, SG-1 once again rides to the rescue and finds an unwelcome surprise from Earth's not-so-distant past.
    • Status: On-going
  • Visions of the Pantheon: An anthology of short stories and vignettes focusing on various Goa'uld.
    • Synopsis: A companion piece to Gods Eye told from the perspective of the various Goa'uld as they react to the chaos that Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden has unleashed upon the Galaxy at large. It's a big galaxy, but nowhere is quite big enough to hide hurricane Dresden.
    • Status: On-going
  • Letters from Home: An anthology of short stories and vignettes focusing on humans, both on and off Earth.
    • Synopsis: This story is intended to provide a venue for short stories told from the POV of humans on Earth in the Endless Pantheon universe that aren't long enough to merit their own story thread but aren't thematically tied to any of my longer narratives.
    • Status: On-going
  • Murphy's Law: A side-story focused on Detective Karin Murphy several months after God's Blood.
    • Synopsis: Even when he's not on the same planet, Harry Dresden manages to complicate Detective Karrin Murphy's life. Already busy dealing with fallout from the Lord Warden's brief visit to Earth, Murphy gets an unwelcome visit from Gentleman John Marcone who wants to report a murder.
    • Status: On-going
  • God's Heart: Third book in the series, taking place after God's Blood.
    • Synopsis: After becoming a god Harry thought his days as a detective were over. But with his empire in danger of losing a valuable ally, Harry must take one last case from the Winter Lady: Find out who assassinated Zeus during the Olympic games.
    • Status: On-going
  • Comments: An interesting fusion of the two universes, with promises of intrigue and well-hidden subtext. Fascinating worldbuilding for how Magitek could work in The Dresden Files universe and a reasonable explanation of how the Goa'uld fit into the DF world: the vampire courts exists to combat them. Snarky "gods", scary Mab, and a generally fun adventure.
    • In spite of the big change that happens early, the story still distills pure Dresden-ness, while adding the special flavor of the Stargate series. Worth the time reading.
    • Mechanically the stories following Harry and the one following the SGC reflect their source material. Harry's story is told from his continuous, unbroken point of view. Meanwhile, the SGC story swaps between different characters with each chapter, much like an episode of SG-1.
      • Another item of note is his characterization of the Goa'uld. Rather than the one-dimensional evil usually seen, here they are depicted as flawed but highly intelligent rulers. They are unashamedly evil by human standards but have a code of conduct and culture that clearly fits their legends from Earth. The fic also justifies their ornate ship, armor, and weapon designs: The intricate designs are warding sigils to keep out faerie assassins, with the iron weapons and armor of their Jaffa being specifically meant to combat them.
  • Cautionary note: Due to his profession, Todeswind has a slow update schedule with periodic months-long downtimes.

  • Comments: It's off to a very good start. The crossover elements in particular are very well handled; the author has done an excellent job of merging the different magic systems.

  • Recommended by: majorshane
  • Crossover with: Firefly
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Harry Dresden finds himself on Serenity; will he find a way back home? Will he want to? Spoilers through BDM and Small Favor.
  • Comments: This is one of the BEST stories I have ever read! It combines not just the characters but the mythology of both series together! Harry accidentally breaks the sixth law of magic and lands in Serenity's cargo hold. This story has action, romance, and a killer plot! The character development is super well done, Ashmanonar does a fantastic job juggling a rather large cast in a fun and engaging way. It is extremely under rated due to the obscurity of the combination. I can not recommend this fic enough. 10/5!
    • Heliomance: YMMV. Writing is technically good, but the voices are off. Also, Harry is not particularly in character - he takes everything way too much in stride, and breaks the First Law without batting an eyelid.

Handle With Care by Jedi Buttercup

  • Crossover with: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Ms. Summers might as well have worn a sign reading 'Danger to Life and Limb' in large, neon print. Fusion-fic.
  • Pairing: Harry/Buffy
  • Comments: A nigh-seamless fusion of The Dresden Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the events of Buffy up to Season Six happened within the metaphysical rules of the Dresdenverse. Buffy joins Team Dresden for the raid on Arctis Tor, Spike and Angel are White Court and Willow ... well. Ships Harry/Buffy.
    • So does the author, pretty damn hard. It's all the fic is about for the first several chapters. And the seams are definitely there.

Harry Dresden: Agent of NERV by Yuffiek666

  • Recommended by: Darkblade, piattish
  • Crossover with: Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Things changed in the year 2000 when humans awoke the outside known as Adam and caused Second impact which killed two billion people, flooded the world and all but destroyed the Sidhe. Years after the Second Impact, SEELE's Head of North American Resource Management and all around criminal scum Johnny Marcone is seemingly murdered by being reduced to an unknown orange liquid. Harry as usually getting caught in the middle of this mess finds himself sent to Tokyo 3 to investigate NERV.
  • Comments: A Crack Fic Gone Horribly Right. The author took great care to almost seamlessly merge the two very distinctive universes. There are some plot conveniences such as Bob's new found Otaku-dom (which has made him fluent in Japanese and capable of tutoring Harry in it) and Ebenezer making Harry an anti-Walking Tech Bane watch but they only serve to bring both Harry and the cast of Evangelion into more trouble I am willing to overlook them.

Higher Stakes: A Fanfiction of the Dresden Files by Wild Paladin

  • Recommended by: Grey Writer
  • Crossover with: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Takes the place of (meaning "completely ignores") Ghost Story and ignores the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight comics after the arc titled Time of Your Life. In the last stages of returning from the death he suffered at the end of Changes, Harry Dresden meets Buffy Summers, her sister Dawn, and their friend Xander Harris in the Nevernever. To Harry, Buffy and Co. are known TV figures, and Xander has read some of the Dresden Files novels. The Scooby Gang help Harry return home, and become a part of his life, eventually help him solve his murder.
  • Comments: A very credible substitute for Ghost Story. The author does an excellent job of imitating Jim Butcher's "voice", works Buffy, Xander and Dawn seamlessly into the Dresden-verse, and offers a more satisfying ending to the BtVS: S8 comics than the actual comics did. It's a little uneven in the middle, and the author does some things I don't think Jim Butcher ever would— but the internal logic holds up well, and it's still a very, very good read, worth it just for the combat scenes and the utterly disgusting monsters. Does have a love relationship between Harry and Buffy that grows believably.

  • Crossover with: Welcome to Night Vale
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: There are a few things that Carlos may have neglected to tell Cecil. Like his last name. Or how he hasn't actually dated anyone since his junior year of high school. Or that he's a wizard of the White Council and the regional commander of Wardens in the western United States and not, in fact, a scientist. You know. Minor details.
  • Pairing: Carlos Ramirez/Cecil Palmer
  • Comment: It's hard not to be blown away by this fic- which blends the creeptastic humor of Welcome to Night Vale with the raw sarcasm of The Dresden Files as seamlessly as it blends the world and characters. The story manages to fell like it belongs to both of the source material without ever being strained or reaching. The story is engaging and it makes you believe in Cecil and Carlos much like the podcast dose- and it manages to incorporate Carlos The Warden and Carlos the Scientist into the same character without losing any of the elements of the originals. If you are in both fandoms (or even if you are in only one, as several reviewers profess), this is definitely worth a read.

  • Synopsis: At the climax of Changes, Harry and Maggie are thrown from Earth to Braavos of the Hundred Isles. After two years of struggling, he's finally got his feet under him and is slowly starting to make small changes. Initially unknown to him, however, his arrival has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the world's magical communities, and he scarce can imagine the long-term consequences of his actions and inventions.
  • Comments: Initial parts can be a bit rough around the edges.
    • While it's initially a bit rough, the characterisation is excellent, it explores parts of the world of ASOIAF that aren't often seen in the books or tv series, the exploration of Dresden's nature as a Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond in the Low Fantasy world of ASOIAF (at first. The return of magic is a major plot point) is very well handled (as is the reaction of the world to him, which mostly ballparks at Oh, Crap!), the exploration of things that Dresden can do with his magic when he has the time to research in detail is absolutely superb and utterly fascinating. Highly recommended.
