    General Fics
Thank the Light (for our time is not up yet) by BluePuffBall
  • Recommended by: Diremoi
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Every Katolian and Duren citizen knows the story of the warrior queens who died. The Queens Three, they're called. The stories say that it was a good death. An honorable death.

    The stories lie.

    Because Viren lied first.
  • Pairing: Harrow/Sarai as a backdrop but mostly focuses on Sarai
  • Notes: Canon divergence, Sarai lives
  • Comments: It's brand new but it hooked me right away! It kicks off with Sarai surviving her "death" (read - Viren stealing her last breath) and opens with several mysteries. Only three chapters so far but it's pretty compelling. Highly recommend.

if heaven and hell decide byspiritypowers and wordswithdragons

  • Recommended by: Diremoi
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Claudia convinces Soren to play the long game. OR: a post 2x03, canon divergence where Claudia and Soren travel with the trio rather than betraying them right away.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla, sorta Callum/Claudia
  • Notes: Season 2 canon divergence
  • Comments: Everything these two write is amazing, tbh, but this one is good if you want more Soren and Claudia interacting with the dragaang. The tension between Rayla, Callum and Claudia is *chef kiss*

The Mystery of Aaravos by Hordika

  • Recommended by: Jarring Turnip
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: The Dragon Prince is home! The war against Viren is won! For the first time in centuries, elves, humans, and dragons have a chance at true, long-lasting peace. As the continent-wide conflict dies down, the heroes of the Battle at the Storm Spire find their place in the new world. But even as old enemies become friends, an ancient threat bides his time as he gathers his strength. Resting, laying new plans into motion, and waiting for the right opportunity to strike...
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written after Season 3
  • Comments: Begins after a four-year timeskip, and from many different points of view. Ezran is king, Rayla is on the Dragon Guard, and Callum is Guardian of the Storm Spire. As everyone begins to realize that Viren is alive, they race to find him and stop his plans. Plenty of adorable Rayllum moments.

The Primal Prince by The Eternal Winter

  • Recommended by: pegiwolf12
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Aaravos refused to be captured by his enemies, his last act of defiance was to seal his soul into his most valuable possession, an item known as the Key of Aaravos. Centuries later a young Callum comes across a strange artifact in the Banther Lodge and releases the spirit of the greatest Elven Archmage to have ever existed.
  • Notes: AU story following Callum and a different (but still as awesome) Aaravos.

Before the Moon byRed Haired Monkey

  • Recommended by: Ser Ulrich
  • Status: Dormant; last updated June 2020
  • Synopsis: Four years after Zym is returned to his mother, peace reigns over the world while humans and elves adjust to the new world. King Ezran maintains peace with Xadia while Callum uses his magic to bring hope to their people. But as an elven ritual approaches, Rayla, chief adviser to the king, struggles to make peace with the past.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written after Season 3
  • Comments: Prequel to the upcoming "Through the Moon" graphic novel. Cute Rayllum moments, taking place from multiple perspectives.

Peace Is A Journey byspontaneite

  • Recommended by: Lego Leo
  • Status: Ongoing with slow updates; last updated November 2022
  • Synopsis: It was a long way to Xadia. A really, really long way. A month's travel if they were lucky. If they weren’t lucky....well, it could take twice that, or even longer. It would take a miracle to get the egg to the Dragon Queen before war broke out. But what else could they do? (AU in which the Xadian continent is much larger, the kids and their egg will be travelling together for a long, long time, and canon lays dying in a ditch along the way)
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Started before even season 3 was out, but is being edited to include more current context and background details.
  • Comments: A very detailed venture into the realistic troubles and consequences of traveling miles and miles on foot, as children, with no large wealth of supplies. The 'alarmingly detailed worldbuilding' tag is very accurate, with the addition of belief systems in human and elf culture, conlangs for elves, and plenty more. An excellent example of attention to detail, as are spontaneite's other works, and a great read if you have the time, since it brings in so many new elements.

    Shipping Fics

The White Mage by LittleMockingjay

  • Recommended by: Snowy Wolf
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Viren, Claudia, and Aaravos reappear, sowing their power through the beings of Xadia who refuse peace with the humans. When Callum's relationship with Rayla makes them targets, his latest goal of becoming an archmage, despite the dangers he is warned it could bring, is intensified to protect her and others. Meanwhile, Rayla remembers Viren's mysterious collection.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla, Soren/OC
  • Notes: Post-season three AU.
  • Comments: This story takes so many twists and turns that it's hardly recognizable after every few chapters. It's an exhilarating, sweet, and exciting fic.

Down to Earth byNumptyPylon

  • Recommended by: Diremoi
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: It's been 18 months since the battle of the Storm Spire, and the world is not okay. Viren was defeated, but there are new reports of dark magic in Xadia. The Breach between humans and elves is mending, but now the human lands are tearing themselves apart. Protecting the new world may prove even harder than it was to make it.
Callum is torn between Katolis and Xadia, Ezran between inherent idealism and the realities of kingship, and Rayla does not know where she belongs at all.Speculative 'Book 4: Earth' (Down to Earth) and 'Book 5: Ocean' (Down Below the Ocean). In the spirit of the show, this will attempt to strike a balance between drama and humor, light and dark, dealing with heavy themes, but maintaining an undercurrent of optimism.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla, some Janaya on the side
  • Notes: Post-S3 season 4 and 5. Pretty mature, but lots of good character moments!
  • Comments: This fic is great. The characterization is spot-on, and I'm going to be disappointed when canon Terry isn't as fun or interesting as Numpty's Terry.

and finding answers (is forgetting all of the questions we called home) bystarsinherblood

  • Recommended by: Avocado 247365
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After a run-in with Viren and Claudia, Callum awakens with no memory past the afternoon he learned assassins were coming for King Harrow. The world, and the people he loves, have changed significantly, and he struggles to reconcile with the new world he's found himself in. And somehow, at the center of the past he doesn't remember, is a Moonshadow elf who knows him better than he knows himself.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Post-Season 3. Written as part of Rayllum Valentine’s Week 2021.
  • Comments: Fantastically well-written piece. A true roller coaster ride, that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

Tales from Patola byHordika

  • Recommended by: Ser Ulrich
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: As they journey to return Zym home, Callum and Rayla visit Patola, a Skywing city, and site of the Sky Nexus. Rayla encounters people and places from her past, while Callum learns to master his sky arcanum. When the two of them decide to explore the city alone, they each confide certain truths in each other.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written before season 3.
  • Comments: This is a Rayllum story set in a canon divergence, where Callum and Rayla's mission takes longer to complete. Here, Callum discovers that connecting to the sky arcanum has made him much more powerful, letting him push the limits of what humans can do. Rayla begins to dwell on the choices she made, and opens up to Callum. When they decide to go on a date through the city, a romance blossoms.

The Fall of Posedia byHordika

  • Recommended by: Ser Ulrich
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: As Rayla and Callum continue their journey through Xadia, their path ahead takes them through the city of Posedia. Meanwhile, the world continues a perilous march towards war. Viren's shadow assassins have killed three of the other human monarchs. With the battle lines drawn, Callum and Rayla are forced to witness a horror neither one of them is prepared to see.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written before season 3.
  • Comments: A sequel to "Tales from Patola," Callum and Rayla are both tested, with Callum continuing to discover new magical abilities while Rayla wonders what he means to her. They rely on each other to survive as the city of Posedia is attacked by human forces and the war between the Pentarchy and Xadia begins to ramp up.

The Earth Nexus byHordika

  • Recommended by: Ser Ulrich
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: By the time Zym is returned to his mother, the war between humans and elves had begun in earnest. Callum and Rayla journey to the Earth Nexus, where the young Mage hopes to learn about the earth arcanum and help end the war. Over time, Callum and Rayla are able to find peace for themselves...as well as find each other.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written before season 3.
  • Comments: A sequel to "The Fall of Posedia," Callum and Rayla get married and settle down in the Earth Nexus, as Callum masters all he can about magic. Rayla considers what's most valuable to her, while Callum gets tempted by darker forms of magic.

Looking for a Way to Break In byspiritypowers and wordswithdragons

  • Recommended by: vx12
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In a world where the moral lines of Dark Magic are less evenly divided, Rayla is a Moonshadow elf in the service of the royal family of Katolis. Assigned to be Prince Callum's bodyguard on a pilgrimage arranged by tradition, she soon finds her feelings becoming harder to deny - and their world harder to protect.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written after season 3.
  • Comments: This is a Rayllum story set in an interesting AU where some human kingdoms, including Katolis, chose to abandon dark magic and side with the dragons while some elves chose to practice dark magic. As a result, Katolis is allied with Duren as well as the Moonshadow and Sunfire elves. Rayla is a member of Katolis's Crownguard and a bodyguard romance ensues.

Return to Katolis by LobsterMobster

  • Recommended by: vx12
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Six months ago, after they changed the course of history at the Storm Spire, Callum and Rayla decided to stay behind so she could help establish the new Dragon Guard and he could learn more about sky magic. Now, as the world takes its first tentative steps toward peace, they are returning to Katolis for the first time as heroes and as a couple. And Ezran is determined to embarrass them as much as possible.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Incomplete version from Callum and Rayla's perspectives instead of Ezran's available here: Departing from Xadia.
  • Comments: Cute, fluffy Rayllum story from Ezran's perspective that takes place and was written after season 3.

I Fell in Love with You One Night in September by kraaho

  • Recommended by: vx12
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A Rayllum text fic set in a modern AU. After Claudia accidentally gives Callum the wrong phone number, he ends up contacting Rayla. Soon he and Rayla find themselves messaging each other more than they expected to.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Written after season 3.
  • Comments:

Bridges by Dreadbeasts

  • Recommended by [Astraea802]
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: When it becomes apparent that Callum is going to have to infiltrate a Xadian mage academy to learn anything useful, things start to go sideways. First, he has to convince Rayla's uncle that he isn't a bloodthirsty dark mage. Then, he has to convince a bunch of other teenage elves that he's one of them. And that was before he met his dad.
  • Pairing: Callum/Rayla
  • Notes: Half-elf Callum AU and Season 3 AU fic. Series consists of two fics thus far: The Bridge Between (written between Seasons 2 and 3) and We'll Cross It When We Get There (written after Season 3).
  • Comments: I mainly enjoy this for Winged Callum, but the story has quite a lot of other things going for it. Very slow-burn Rayllum, with some very cute blushy moments as a result. The characterization for existing characters is fairly well done, the OCs are quite well-developed, as is the backstory for Callum's birth in this AU. The author did have to retcon a few things about they had established about Skywing elves once Season 3 came out, but still manages to stick fairly close to canon events.

    Crossover Fics

White Knight, Red Queen by Captain of Azoren

  • Recommended by: Gordhanx
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Pairing(s): Azula/Soren
  • Synopsis: Soren and Claudia stumble through a portal to the Fire Nation at the tail end of the 100 year war. Azula shows them the glory of her country, but what else lies in store? Bonds are formed and broken as secrets of the past and present are revealed. What is the meaning of true loyalty? Is it worth one's morality?

Disney's RealmWalkers by LumiTea (Crossover with Gravity Falls, Amphibia, others yet to be revealed )

  • Recommended By: Ad Impestra
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: When Heather and her wife Sasha Waybright discover a girl with mysterious, deadly powers, they find themselves dragged into the center of an inter-dimensional conflict with catastrophic implications for not only the Human Realm- but dozens, maybe hundreds of others as well.
  • Comments: Unlike many of the others on this page, this is not primarily a Dragon Prince fanfic- but Runaan appears as a member of the Council of Masters, and the author has confirmed that Xadia is a canon world within the fic's multiverse. As this fanfic is in its early stages, and the multiverse figures as a central element of the story, all signs point to further Dragon Prince involvement in the story going forward.
