Authors and Sites

  • Reccomended by Headphones Cinderella, Mei-may
  • Comments: She does Baron/Haru shipping and AUs, but they're very lovely, with consistent writing and intricate plots. If you want to sit down with a long, developed story, YarningChick's your girl.

  • Comments: Almost like YarningChick, also does Baron/Haru shippings and AUs. Long stories with developing characters and quite as popular.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Snark Returns UNCUT, mostly UNCENSORED! by NarrowGauger

  • Comments: A humorous rendition of the movie's plot as it features comical dialogues, unexpected cameos, Headscratchers, fridge brilliance moments, and certain characters with a bit of change. This fanfiction lives up to its name, set in a World of Snark as it narrates the obvious. The Cat Returns abridged, in a nutshell.

Apocalypse Meow by Dr. Vorlon

  • It has its own article now.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Poor Haru. In addition to missing Baron, she is plagued by recurring nightmares of Yuki in danger. Meanwhile, Hiromi embarks on an adventure of her own.
  • Comments: A very creative fanfiction that had the same atmosphere of the original movie. Both humor and action juxtaposed beautifully. A bit dark on some parts but all in all, a funny and exhilarating read. It can make you read all the chapters one-sitting.

To Know Oneself by YarningChick.

  • Pairing: Haru/Baron and other couples from different fairy tales, myths, legends.
  • Recommended by Meimay.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A mass-crossover AU in which Haru is Bearskin, the cursed trapper who travels the world to find a cure for her curse. The path is long but as she goes, she learns more about herself and the world.
  • Have a Trope page.
  • Comments: YarningChick has always been the queen of The Cat Returns's fanfics and in her latest story, she once again shows us her skills. "To Know Oneself" is a brilliant story that seamlessly combines and connects different fairy tales, myths, and legends from different countries into one large world with many wonders to discover. The characters are believable, the story-telling is smooth. You will laugh, cry, and unable to stop once you pick this fic up.

Over You by Rowena Arum

  • Recommended by Alyssa Macki
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Baron sits in the Bureau think over Haru, the happy times he spent with her. But now she's out of his reach and he's never going to get over her. Based on Miranda Lambert's song "Over You."
  • Comments: Real interesting idea developed here. This story, in its beautiful tragedy, stands out by its heartbreak. So many of the TCR fanfics end with Haru and Baron defying fate and finding a way to be together (in fact, I can think of VERY few that have a Haru×Baron pairing that either doesn't work out or is marred by death) so this story is one of a select few.

Ties That Bind by YarningChick

  • Recommended by Scabbard
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Once upon a time, there was a curse and a girl. Too bad she didn't know about the curse.
  • Comments: The perfect combination of high school life, a magical mystery with plenty of originality that still fits the spirit of the movie, and one of the most interesting takes on a romance I've seen in fanfiction, period. It can be a bit slow to move but the mystery and Haru's thought process make sure you don't lose interest. It takes a while to get going and the ending is pretty abrupt but its originality makes up for it.
