Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here. The courage of these dedicated fans in the face of the howling dark is truly beyond measure.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for fanfics that originated from or are hosted by the Spacebattles Creative Writing forums, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Crossovers (except for Familiar of Zero, which is composed of almost all crossovers) are to be posted to the Crossover folder.

Elseworlds: Bruce Has A Problem initial oneshot written by Adrian Tullberg, and then with permission from above a loosely-moderated Round Robin collaboratively written onward by Andrew J Talon, Scriviner, and a handful of other authors from the SpaceBattles forum

  • Recommended by Shonen Hero
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairing(s): Bruce Wayne/Harley Quinn, Tim Drake/Cassandra Cain, and Damian Wayne/Stephanie Brown
  • Synopsis: Harley Quinn discovers the identity of the man behind the cowl...then decides to shack up with him. Hilarity Ensues
  • Having been creatively inspired by this oneshot, a group of fanfic authors from the SpaceBattles forum began writing a series of connected snippets that continued Bruce and Harley's budding relationship, and the repercussions/effects of such a relationship. The majority of the snippets share a similar Slice of Life / Rom Com tone to that of Cat Tales, as well as borrowing some minor naming/story conventions, but other then that the rest is solid, hilarious Original Flavor

Dead Tired by Thalia

  • Recommended by Veloren
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: The (mis)adventures of the world's crankiest and overworked necromancer in Gotham City. DC OC, ongoing.
  • Comments: rare street-level OC fic that explores the magic side of DC.

    Fate/Stay Night

What it takes to win (Beast's Lair version) (Spacebattles version) by Kagaseo

  • Recommended by The World of Fantasy, nitewind
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: An investigation after the Fourth Fuyuki War led to the disablement of the Grail, and a different goal in life for Shirou. When a new, bigger, illegal war erupts, he's forced to face difficult battles: this time, the Grail won't be satisfied until only one Master is left standing.
  • Comments: An AU version of Fate/stay night, featuring characters of Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha, and Fate/EXTRA (featuring characters of Tsukihime) in the different kind of Heaven's Feel 5 that features not only seven, but 49 Servants. It may have some dark moments, but there are some Funny and Awesome moments in this fanfic that's worth reading for.

    Franchise/Green Lantern

In Blackest Night by spencer1519.

  • Recommended by Drgyen
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: In the wake of the Blackest Night, a recently dead becomes a self-aware Black Lantern and leads a reformed Black Lantern Corps.

    Franchise/Lyrical Nanoha

Game Theory and Power Games by Aleph. (Tropes page here.)

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Who dares stand between a mother and her daughter's life? Precia will do anything to achieve her goals. Even if it means accepting Fate.

    Mass Effect

Catalyst.EXE by Shujin

  • Recommended by GLH, USA Bobcat
  • Synopsis: A doctor named Rebecca wakes up on Ilos, trapped within the memory banks of a Prothean computer. After adjusting to her new situation and creating an android body for herself, she sets about to preventing the canonical plot and preventing Saren from utilizing the Conduit. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, because the reality she woke up in is not the same one as the games.
  • Status: Dormant
  • Comments: Lots of unintentional situations due to faulty information, misunderstandings, and bad decisions.

Spectre by Caine/Precept

  • Recommended by: Gentlemens Dame 883
  • Vanished from the internet. Please post a link if found.
  • Synopsis: John Shepard is a man haunted by ghosts. Can he rise above his past to save the galaxy?
  • Pairing(s): Seems to be moving towards Shep/Tali.
  • Comments: A novelisation of the first game that the author really makes his own. While the plot doesn't diverge too greatly, it's in the character work that this shines, especially how the author depicts Shepard as struggling with his past rather than as canon's much less ambiguous hero.

Mass Effect: Circular by Gregg Landsman

  • Recommended by: The Curator, USA Bobcat, Unclouded TJ, Vellaen
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: From the man who brought us Nobody Dies comes the epic continuation of the Mass Effect Franchise. The ending of Mass Effect 3 was not the beginning of the end. It was not the end of the end. It was simply the end of the beginning.
  • Pairing(s): None
  • Tags: Fix Fic (sort of), Mental Time Travel
  • Warnings: YMMV strongly, as there is a bit of handwaving in the first chapter that some may find to be excessive. Additionally, if you are the 1% that liked the endings, Gregg has done away with them completely.
    • Author's note: I actually do like the endings. -Gregg
  • Comments: Imagine, if you will, Shepard being more badass then before. Then imagine that Gregg Landsman wrote about what happens given Shepard’s newfound badassery. There is absolutely no way conceivable under the laws of the universe for this not to be awesome. And it is. It totally is. Also Javik meets a Hanar. Hilarity Ensues.

Conception by lloyd007

Harvest by Nuts!

  • Recommended by Gore 17, hodaza, USA Bobcat, Jonn
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Was that the first time a geth asked it if had a soul?" "No. It was the first time a Creator became frightened when we asked."
  • Comments: Words can not do this fic justice. Read it and remember why you love fanfic.
    • Seconded
    • USA Bobcat: Just a oneshot, but a very well done oneshot. Makes you feel the separation between geth and quarian quite well, and somehow reminds me of a mother and her children. If you like either the geth or the quarians, read this. It will remind you why you still comb through archives of fanfiction, for the elusive works of quality.

The Miracle at Palaven by Sudentor (aka Kei)

  • Recommended by: Peteman, Wild Goose
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Miracle At Palaven is the biggest Offscreen Moment of Awesome in the game. This story opts to flesh it out, giving a theoretical account as written from a historical in-universe document. Do you believe in miracles?
    • As for the kind of playthrough that was done, the Geth and the Quarians are both alive, even in the aftermath of the events that would take place in the game.
  • Tags: Violence and language.
  • Comments: Definitely worth a read. It gives a great take on the events and highlights the kinds of things that would have to be done and what could go wrong, and the kinds of badass it takes to overcome that sort of adversity. The best way to describe this story is, simply put, Mass Effect meets Black Hawk Down, written in the style of Band of Brothers. As to why it goes here, this was the first fanfic Sudentor wrote that was posted to SB in parts, and received much feedback from the readers.
    • The author Kei is also known as Sudentor on, who wrote the equally Order Upon Chaos and Mistakes Worth Sharing.
    • The author also takes what was a throwaway line in ME3's emails, Kal'Reegar dying while defending repairs to a comm antenna, and turns it into a Manly Tears-inducing heroic Last Stand. And it is awesome.

Dead Garden by Aaron Nowack

  • Drafts and discussion can be found at Space Battles here.
  • Has its own tropes page here.
  • Recommended by spacemonkey37, Arcane Azmadi, Nshosha
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairings: None yet.
  • Synopsis: The Fourth Hokage left a behind a legacy, a cruel burden that would change the fate of a world. It should have gone to a hero, a champion who could mend the broken and save the hopeless. Instead it fell on Haruno Sakura. Good thing she'll have some help.
  • Status: Active. Last updated September 2012.

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

Nobody Dies, by Gregg Landsman

  • Recommended by: Looney Toons, Shay Guy, Amitakartok, TheTygre, Night, Lord Arkea, Maltani
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: What would happen if we had everything we ever wanted? What if certain tragedies, in the past, we averted? One would normally think this would make a better world. Some old traumas could be gone. But the new pains could be worse.

A Little Angel on My Shoulder, by Spacebattles

  • Recommended by: Comartemis, Willbyr
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: The Angels don't completely die when an Eva kills them, instead they turn into chibified Shoulder Angels for whoever scored the kill. And as Shinji and the rest of NERV are about to discover, they're even more annoying when they can talk to you than they are when they're trying to blow you up.

Children of an Elder God by John Biles and Rod M.

  • Recommended by: Crazael, D Mint, Tacitus, Anthiena, Tzetze, Zephid
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: CoaEG is an AU that fuses Evangelion with the works of H.P. Lovecraft that is very well written, with only a few new characters and well thought out changes, where instead of battling Angels the Children fight the Old Gods for the future of humanity.
    • NOTE: The final chapter is posted on John Biles' personal account; Word of God is that the official site will be updated when Rod M. gets around to it.

  • Status: Active! After a years-long hiatus, has stated updating again as of 28 July 2013. (NOPE, IT'S DORMANT AGAIN)
    • Hasn;t been updated since 2013. Safe to say it's dead.
  • Synopsis: During Instrumentality, Lilith asks Shinji one important question. His reply sends him back to the start of the series, where maybe he can make things better than what they were the first time around.
  • Pairings: Shinji/Asuka, Rei/Kensuke, Toji/Hikari

Shinji And Warhammer 40 K by Charles Bhepin

Thousand Shinji by Academia Nut

  • Recommended by: Guessmyname, Gentlemens Dame 883, EarthScorpion, Mach Rider 1985, demonwarlord
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It's a common idea in NGE fanfiction for Shinji to be raised by someone different. It's rather less common for that parent-figure to be a time-displaced Sorcerer of the Thousand Sons Legion. A far more ruthless, calculating Shinji has come to Tokyo-3, and as the battle of wits between him and his father threatens to shake the city apart in the face of Armageddon, dark forces begin to manipulate events from behind the scenes. Can Shinji trust his new allies, or is he simply a pawn in a far larger game?

    Puella Magi Madoka Magica

The Disappearance of Miki Sayaka by Aku-dono

  • Recommended by ABadDriver and Psyga315
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Miki Sayaka's mysterious disappearance draws more than a few questions from her mother. Takes place after episode 12.
  • Comments: This fic really goes into the details and aftermath of what happened with Sayaka's parents, even deconstructing their efforts to find her. Be warned, it is very dark.
    • As in What A Human Can Do and As Time Diverges, this includes an investigation element, but this time the protagonist doesn't catch on at any point and never finds out about the World of the Puella Magi.

Demon Cleaners by FourthWall

  • Recommended by Cheeseand Cake
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Post-episode twelve, Sayaka and an avatar of Madoka reappear proclaiming themselves Demon Cleaners MIKI and KANAME in capital letters and dramatic fashion. But there's the little question of just who wished them back? Especially in Madoka's case. There also appears to be a Demon King of some kind hatching beneath the school.
  • Comments: It hasn't gotten too far along yet, but the writing's solid and the humor is certain to make you crack a grin.

Resonance Days by Taker Foxx SpaceBattles version

  • Recommended by MadanEccles19 and Grand Prince Paul II
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Falling their mutual demise at each other's hands, Kyoko and Sayaka wake up in a strange world. Now, with Kyoko's soul gem missing and Sayaka's humanity and personality only partially restored, they must band together to survive.
  • Comments: The synop doesn't do this story justice, at only three chapters it's already looking to be a wild ride.
    • Fifth chapter's up, and it just gets better and better.
    • Oh, and it develops some shipping elements, but its not a main part of the story.

Witch Quest by Chibi-Reaper

  • Recommended by: Aegeus, Shinji 117, Makuta 9999
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: "You are Rochelle. The witch of Regret. A damned huge spider, or something really close to it. You never really liked arachnids, so you kind of regret what you've become in more ways than one..." (Un)Fortunately, you're caught up in Homura's timeloops, so you have a chance to fix what you regret. Can you befriend the magical girls trying to kill you, or will you get napalm'd yet again? An ongoing quest on the SpaceBattles forum.
  • Comments: It starts off a bit silly, but once the novelty of being a giant spider wears off, the forumgoers begin to earnestly try to get a good ending for everyone. However, between the mentally unstable magical girls, Kyubey trying to do mad science to her, and Homura, who responds to things that disrupt her carefully planned timeloops with napalm, it's a very difficult quest. And even time-looping won't get them out of everything...
    • Chibi-Reaper has described himself as a Healing-Type writer. It shows.

Jaune Arc: Hero of Vytal by Kartofel von Kouch (Also has a mirror that updates with full chapters after the SB thread, which updates in chapter sections.)

  • Recommended by Malchus
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Being from a family of heroes, Jaune had long ago realized that heroism wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It was just plain sense to take a safer course in life. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to tell him that the world just didn't make sense. Inspired by the Ciaphas Cain series of Warhammer 40K.
  • Comments: While based on the Ciaphas Cain books, the author does not ape the series and eschews the first-person biographical style for a third-person style with alternating character POVs, getting into the mind of each. Has an interesting take on Jaune in that while outwardly he acts very close to his canon self, inwardly he, like Cain, schemes for a way to keep from getting into trouble (and fails due to rotten luck).

    Stargate SG 1

Stargate: Project Arctic Circle by Night 33

  • Recommended by Judge King
  • Status: Dead
  • Sypnosis: Canada gets the Stargate in 1941 because of a shipping error, and several decades later discovers it and starts its own SGC program.
  • Comments: The point of divergence is in 1941 when the Stargate is accidentally shipped to Canada after a train wreck.
    • Has a very different feel from the show. Basically, the Canadians are a lot more careful, and take pains to keep the Goa'uld from learning that Earth is a threat to them. Also, lots of tech.
      • Regrettably, the story has by now descended into WSOD breaking US screw territory.

'Out of the Dark', by Derain von Harken.

  • Recommended by Strika Amaru 2
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: "Welcome to the brink Adam. It’s not the end of the world but you can see it from here." Yes, Adam is the Emperor. No, he's not the focus of the fic.
  • Comments: An ongoing story which indirectly explores the relatively unfleshed Dark Age of Technology, and Time of Strife. It follows a military expedition to the edges of human space, under the leadership of the original General Perturabo, as they go from a mandate of investigating/fighting an Eldar renegade, to mounting an extra-galactic expedition as back-up for humanity after said Eldar's actions end up ensuring the birth of Slaanesh (nice going), to just surviving after Cabal interference ruins that plan by dumping the entire planet into the warp; due to antiwarp technology, this doesn't immediately kill them, and they spend a few experiential millennia as a bizarre reverse-Daemon world in the Warp.. There are some non-linear portions (justified by the spoilered bit), so there is a certainty that they will come back into the time period of M40-42, and have conflicts with the Imperium.

Atonement by Cerulean

  • Recommended by russianspy1234, Ragnar The Semi Green, Knight Light 321, SigmaJargon
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: An AU fic where Taylor dies in the locker prank, and Madison's guilt causes her to trigger as well as fall out with Sophia and Emma. Plot ensues as she tries to atone for her deeds and joins the Wards in the process.
    • Seconded. Of particular note is the author's update pace. The story, now in its 13th arc, started on September 26th. So far, the author has been posting a minimum of four chapters of roughly three thousand words every week.
    • Thirded. As of today, 6/11/15, Atonement is on its 31st arc, and still going strong. While still having a serious tone and a seriously good story (And a boatload of mythology gags to the original series), Atonement manages to be somewhat more light-hearted and optimistic in a way that isn't terrible. The author also has a second fic, entitled Intrepid, which follows a similar premise in an Alternate Universe setting.

Enlightenment by Enohthree

Renegade by Peptuck

  • Recommended by corin, USA Bobcat, Deep Recon
  • Status: Dead
  • Crossover with: Command & Conquer: Tiberian Series and Mass Effect
  • Synopsis: A Mass Effect/Command & Conquer: Tiberian Series Crossover/Alternate Universe fic that replaces the Mass Effect Earth with Tiberium Earth, with GDI taking over the role of the Systems Alliance, that follows the plot of the original game. Female Colonist Sole Survivor/War Hero Shepard who appears to be a combination Vanguard/Adept. Not yet clear whether she's Paragon or Renegade.
  • Comments: Inspired by a discussion on story thread here.) Essentially serves as a novelization of the game that explores how different everything would be if GDI replaced the Alliance, and how their technology and Tiberium would dramatically influence politics, i.e. Nod intervenes in the slaver attack on Elysium, GDI goes to war with the Batarian Hegemony, the Scrin were behind Akuze and Eden Prime, etc. The story is still relatively new, however, so there's no idea when it will be updated.
    • My favorite fanfic of all time. And even if you don't know Command & Conquer, I have three words for you: Spectre Garrus Vakarian.
    • Definitely seconded. This isn't Mass Effect with GDI in place of the Alliance, it is a true mixture. Basic example: With the aggressiveness of GDI Foreign Policy, the Council expands the number of Spectres, leading to Spectre Garrus Vakarian, who the Author himself described as "Turian Jack Bauer meets the Kool-Aid Man."
    • Good fics are already hard to find, that much is well-documented. Good crossover fics is a contest of finding a minority group within a minority group, but Renegade is one of those wonderful few. There is a minor change in tone for readers going from chapter one to seven in one sitting (as this troper did), from rather dark 'n gritty to downright funny, but when the comedy is genuinely entertaining (good comedy fics being another minority among minorities), it's more than excusable. Well-worth the read. —Deep Recon

No Gods, Only Guns by Peptuck

  • Crossover With: Borderlands and Mass Effect.
  • Synopsis: Ancient artifacts of immense power. Murderous synthetics. Ruthless megacorps. Unscrupulous mercenaries. Genocidal stellar god-machines. Incompetent galactic governments. Claptrap dubstep. The horrors of the galaxy are many, but there's one thing a good, mentally-unstable fortune-seeking antihero can rely on: the gun at his, her, or its side. Mass Effect/Borderlands fusion.
  • Comments: First off: Udina with an eye-patch and cyberarm! On a more serious note, the story is another fusion by Peptuck that combines Borderlands' general batshit insanity and over-the-top humor with the interstellar political drama and impending apocalypse of Mass Effect, with Lilith replacing Shepard.
    • Digital Patriot: Definitely gotta recommend this. The author manages to combine the characters and atmosphere of both Mass Effect and Borderlands 2 near perfectly, while changing events up enough for it to be a true fusion, rather than just another "retread of Mass Effect with someone else in Shepard's Place". Also, I will see your Udina and raise you Torgue Urdnot.

  • Crossover with: Halo and Forgotten Realms
  • Synopsis: From an altered Halo 3, The Master Chief, Cortana, Arbiter, Sgt Johnson and Captain Keyes end up riding the Forward Unto Dawn all the way to the Forgotten Realms, just before the Time of Troubles begins.
  • Comments:
  • Psalm of Fire: Very bloody, but the approach and ability to portray wonder really snagged me into it.
    • Comartemis: Seconded. As far as I care, this is Halo 3's canon ending.
    • Thirded. Easily one of the most engrossing Fic's I've ever read. I honestly can't begin to guess at just how many hours I've spent reading this thing...
    • Night: A sort of first cousin to The Salvation War in terms of some of the themes, but a very different story in plot, setup, and character. While magic met firepower, and firepower's victory was absolute, it did not have to be that way. Ably demonstrates the nature of an Outside Context Problem; it's not the difference between sides is insurmountable (and it is not; there are opponents who even manage to give the Master Chief and Arbiter trouble), but that they simply don't have the experience or the tactics to start looking for ways to fight back.

  • Synopsis: Madoka was prepared to spend eternity fighting witches. She was somewhat less prepared for what being a sentient concept actually entailed. The good news is, there are people who can show her the ropes for that sort of thing. The somewhat-less good news is, the one she's got is everyone's favorite boundary manipulator. And Reimu's already getting a headache from this one.
  • Comments: Takes place post-series, obviously. LH5 has some interesting ways of visualizing Madoka's existence as a sentient concept, the downside to which is that you need to follow along rather closely at first or risk suffering a Mind Screw.

    • Synopsis: a round-robin variation of the Raa B story by several fans of the series, where the Earth Forces are forced to submit by the threat of orbital bombardment, and the Colonials occupy Earth. Things do not go well for all sides involved.
    • Comments: As this is written by people other than the original author, so the quality of individual entries varies (some get shoved into Canon Discontinuity even), but it's overall almost as good a story as the original. Other series than just Stargate and Galactica get involved in some places, and it's a little Curb-stompy in the beginning as the Colonials run headfirst into forces far better equipped for ground combat.
      • This also resulted in several massive arguments between the authors, several more nearly leaving or just stop writing SG fanfiction. Also the original author of RAAB stated he has no wish to continue with RAAB for the time being because of this AU (Troper's Note: RAAB is being continued again!). Overall all spacebattles members agree this idea while good suffered from lack of oversight, disagreements on how to handle the occupation without curb stomping or performing a genocide on the Colonials(which many people were calling for), and just disagreements over everything else.

  • Comments:
    • USA Bobcat: A very interesting and in depth look at what SCIENCE! does to the Stargate crew. There is a Goa'uld OC that comes off as very Mary-Sueish, including avoiding the horrible fashion-sense of the System Lords. However, he does not get away with everything, and Agatha shuts him down quick nicely. Be aware, though, that this is Agatha before the main plot of Girl Genius, and not the one at the most up-to-date issue.

  • Crossover with: Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell

  • Synopsis: An exceptionally well thought-out crossover, blending Evangelion with the gritty post-cyberpunk world of Ghost in the Shell. The author obviously knows her stuff, and has very skillfully performed a mythology transplant, cutting out the Judaeo-Christian Angels for Sumerian mythology, not to mention the fact that this Rei rather likes technology. Plus, it has Tachikomas, and Misato and the Major interacting. This is post-cyberpunk, pragmatic politicing, with only a slight tendency towards Technology Porn. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, after all.

    • Proofreading doesn't seem to be a thing the author has heard of. Sure, kick reason to the curb. But be warned that spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure/pacing have also been give the boot, and that might get in the way of enjoying the story.
    • It was also written quite some time ago and is unfinished, and likely to stay that way. Maybe worth a read if you don't mind, but the author has gone on to bigger and better things.

  • Synopsis: After the events of Devil Survivor, Midori Komaki moves to Tatsumi Port Island to finish out her school year. But when the Summoner gets caught up in the Dark Hour, is SEES really prepared for her? Is currently in the opening sequences for Persona 4.
  • Comments: Currently at 3 years and 280,00+ words at the time of this writing, 7DS is one of the longest stories on SpaceBattles. While the action sequences tend to be fairly weak, they are not the focus of this story. Taking its cues from the larger Persona meta-plot, it is Midori's social life and how she affects and is affected by everyone around her that is the real highlight. The author also incorporates feedback into his re-writes, and even completely redid the first part (The Journey) because he wasn't satisfied with it. Updates usually occur on Mondays with segments of various lengths, while the Fan Fiction dot Net version only goes up once the author feels he has enough of a buffer.
