Proof that the remaining 10% is worth donning a white cape and monocle for here:

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Magic Kaito Fan Fics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into romantic or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Additional Note: Due to the canon's constant Crossovers and Canon Welding with Detective Conan, many stories will assume a baseline familiarity with supporting casts and Myth Arcs of both.note  Indeed, a number of early Magic Kaito fics remain in's Detective Conan section despite featuring no Conan characters apart from Kid himself. This page currently has no set policy, but does advise that works predominantly featuring the Conan cast be considered for that series' page instead, or at least the Crossover folder below.

Conversion from the "Comments" section to the "Reviews" option is underway. If you are adding a fic, please help us out and use the new template-format on the Fanfic Recommendations Index Page. Please start moving your comments to the reviews sections as we will soon start removing them.

  • Recommended by: Huilisti, Love Is Weird, Dame-Amaryllis, Rubber_Lotus
  • Comments: One of the oldest and most prolific authors - not to mention Kaito x Aoko shippers - in the fandom. Capable of heartwarming fluff, hilarious crack, and bone-chilling darkness in equal measure. Check out her Fanfic 100 compilation for samples of all of the above, then consider a glance at:

Ellen Brand

  • Recommended by: prussianredknight, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Comments: An excellent author with introspective works on the characters, though all of them are listed under the Detective Conan tag. Lots of focus on the characters' inner thoughts and how their problems are all tied together, as well as some psychoanalysis from an OC, psychologist Cade Maboroshi. Plenty of mythology integrated as well, with an entire series, titled Supernatural, dedicated to resolving the main conflicts of Magic Kaito and Detective Conan in a fantastical but satisfying way (and eventually crossing over with The Real Ghostbusters). POV characters include Kaito Kuroba, Saguru Hakoba, and Toichi Kuroba.

  • Recommended by: Dame-Amaryllis, Tsukireiko, PaperStars, Purple Candlelight
  • Comments: Only a handful of works so far, but radiating the care and World Building you'd typically expect from five authors. Not to be perused on a short attention span.
    • Schrodinger's Detective - In which the KID Capture Brigade decides to investigate the bizarre disappearance of one Shinichi Kudo. Cue action, intrigue, and a lovingly-painted picture of just how bizarre Shinichi's status would look to any outsiders who actually pay attention.
    • Dominoes - In-progress Door Stopper Super Fic that's also quite possibly the most brutal Deconstruction Fic you'll find in the fandom. You'll never look at Kid Hero teams, their adult mentors, or Kaito's life-calling the same way again. Oh, and as far as Shipping goes... beware brutal sinking of the S.S. Shinichi x Ran, with Shinichi x Kaito rising in its wake.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Riddle in Reverse by Ninthfeather

  • Recommended by: Rubber_Lotus
  • Status: Complete.

Disguises, misunderstandings, and Time Travel abound.
  • Comments: Now with in-progress sequel Steeplechase, bringing the whole Detective Conan cast along for the ride.

Reichenbach by athena_crikey (formerly blinkblink on

  • Recommended by: Tsukireiko
  • Status: Complete.

Magic Users Club by Kyogre

  • Recommended by: Cure Icy
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Kaito discovers he has magic, and the chain of events this sets off is more than anyone could have imagined.
  • Pairings: Koizumi Akako/Nakamori Aoko
  • Comments: This fic offers a glimpse into what might have been of Magic Kaito had Conan not taken off. Full of rich characterization and unapologetically magical, Magic Users Club answers all the questions you had and some you didn’t but really should have asked.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Spandex, Seven Possible Uses Of by s2lou

  • Recommended by: Rabidrabbit
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This is not a story about love. It's not, really. Or: the true—in parts, anyway—story behind Kuroba Kaito's existence.
  • Pairing: First!KID/Phantom Lady
  • Comments: Absolutely hilarious.

True Colors by Misty_Reeyus

  • Recommended by: Rubber_Lotus
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Amongst all the headaches and tribulations brought on by Kaito’s secret identity, all the members of the Kaitou Kid Capture Brigade make the journey from disunited teammates to somewhat-reluctant friends to something a hell of a lot more complicated.
  • Pairing: Kaito x Aoko x Akako x Hakuba
  • Comments: Soul-searching character vignettes that're also perfect for scratching that poly-shipping itch. Don't let the "official" series' tiny size fool you - pretty much all of the author's Magic Kaito works run along this vein (though some may get steamier than the norm).

Trophy Magnet by Rikkamaru

  • Recommended by: Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete

Call by joisbishmyoga

  • Recommended by: PaperStars
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Ghostbusters (2016)
  • Synopsis: I would like to engage your services to analyze my evidence, to determine if any of it is of mundane origin at all, Saguru wrote, and wished with all his heart that they'd find it was.
  • Comments: The pairing is slash, Hakuba Saguru/Kuroba Kaito | Kaitou Kid, and this fic breaks my heart. Shatters it multiple times, and watches sadly as my heart is crushed into dust. It's tagged spectrophilia, and I was originally against reading it, but not in the way you're thinking. Be prepared to cry. Lament the tragedy of possibilities. Think about your life and how your death will be taken, etc. joisbishmyoga is a beautiful authour, and this was the fic that drew me to them first.
