Red Violett

  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: An incredibly talented artist, who has tons of wonderful drawings and the most amazing fan art comics in the DBZ fandom. If you're looking for brilliant, emotional, impeccably executed fan fiction told through comics, her page is the place to go. Her fictions mostly focus on Vegeta, and all characters remain true to themselves. Warning: Do not visit this page if you have plans for the next couple of hours, it will most likely engulf you and you'll loose all sense of time and productivity for the rest of the day.

LpPhreek

  • Recommended by: Svata, Final Flash X
  • A very engaging author with a good grasp of plot, spelling, and grammar. Most of his(?) fics are Vegeta-centric, and revolve around his relationship with Bulma. Especially recommended: Rediscovering Honorand Guardian of Vegetasei, even if the latter is only 8 chapters long so far.

Chuquita

  • Recommended by Lady Nomad
  • Chuquita has one of the most interesting and well thought out multiverses. She has taken lesser known Dragon Ball Z characters like King Vegeta and Bardock and given them interesting characteristics. She had been writing this multiverse since before the year 2000 and she is still writing. She had also written a bunch of web comics.

Stupidoomdoodles.

  • Recommended by Hatted Halfling note
  • Synopsis: stupidoomdoodles runs what could be considered one of the most fun DBZ tumblr accounts on the internet. Occasionally she’ll post a longer introspection on some aspect of the DBZ universe, but her true gems are her comics and, amazingly enough, her tags. The comics are generally well-done and clever, amusing, or ridiculous by turns, generally focusing on the more daily life of the Briefs family, though the rest of the DBZ cast also makes appearances from time to time, and the woman has a talent for coming up with really fun A Us. As for her tags… she claims she’s an artist, not a writer, and while I cannot argue the former, I will deny the latter, because some of those tags read like wonderful little drabbles – there have been times I laughed more at the tag than the comment. This is technically a general account, not a DBZ specific one, so she does post other things here, but it’s mainly DBZ. Also contains the occasion piece of NSFW art, but it’s all clearly labelled and posted so you have to actively open the post to view the work. Mostly, though, it’s the account of a woman who remembers and rejoices in how blatantly ridiculous this fandom can be, and is inviting us to laugh at these wonderful, ridiculous characters we all love with her.

  • This YouTube creator uses mods from Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 to create What If? stories featuring some of the main characters. This "VS" saga is a series of battles that take place in different dimensions and timelines where a fight between original characters and the canon ones happens. Some of these characters are versions of the main cast who come from timelines where anything else can happen. Such What Ifs "if Vegeta became King", "if Goku never hit his head", or "if DBZ Broly and Super Broly met". There are also some battle reenactments from the Dragon Ball Super anime such as "Goku Vs Jiren". This channel is where epic battles in many forms happen! This YouTuber has made a fan series called Dragon Ball Taiyou. Here of some of the videos:
    • Goku vs Kakarotto!: Our Goku faces off against Kakarot, a version of Goku who never hit his head when he was a baby and remembers his Saiyan heritage.
    • Xeno Vegeta VS King Vegeta II!: The Vegeta from the GT timeline fights a version of Vegeta who is the king of all Saiyans! Also in the latter's universe, Frieza was killed by the Saiyans and they all rose to power.
    • Broly VS Broly!: A fight between the Broly from the DBZ movies and the Broly from Dragon Ball Super.
    • Vegeta VS King Vegeta II!: Our Vegeta faces off against the King of All Saiyans as well.

  • Commentary: If you're a Goku and/or Vegeta lover, or even if you aren't but want a rich insight to the characters, this troper recommends you visit the author's page and try her works - perhaps starting with Call It What You want. S/he has a way of delving into each of the character's POV and making it sound like they really have a voice of their own. The writing is spectacular too, from a writer and not a fan's perspective. Some of the phrases make you think deeper about life, with a good dash of humour littered through the writing so dry that sometimes you miss it on first read.

Just Breathe by Stardust_Steel

  • Recommended by vegokulover10
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Vegeta explores grief in his own way, navigates his friendship with Goku as it morphs into something he cannot name, and finds a way to reconcile his eternally lost saiyan culture with the life he had adopted on Earth. AKA the author's headcanon as to how Goku and Vegeta get used to holding hands.

This is such a rich exploration of Vegeta’s mind and struggles after the Buu saga, how he tries to reform himself with his family, how he struggles with his depressive days and how Goku is a loyal friend who helps him through it. So many lovely details, too, like the technical skills he surely picked up spending so much of his life on space ships. The numbness that he feels on his bad days comes through strong, sucking you in but leaving enough distance that’s it obvious something is not right with him. Goku having enough awareness to be present but not pushy is very sweet and fitting.

Future that Almost Was, by Hero R

  • Recommended by jjgp1112
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: On August 764, Frieza and his father arrived on Earth seeking revenge against the Super Saiyan. When they arrived, they are killed by Trunks. That is the history we have come to know. However, this isn't that story. This is a story of the original timeline. Of the future that should have been.
  • A heart-wrenching tale of how Trunks' timeline fell apart, starting with Goku's return to Earth to defeat Frieza. A very well-done look into Goku, Trunks, and Gohan's thoughts, with an ending that will absolutely melt you. Only real gripe is that the spelling and grammar isn't always perfect as English isn't the author's first language, but it's worth it.

The Story of Soon the Time Patroller

  • Recommended by yoshi3000
  • Status: Complete
  • One of the many Dragon Ball Xenoverse fanfics out, this one has a rather Original Flavor take with the 'Piccolo has a child' idea. Soon's a rather neat character being such as stoic as his old man. chadtayor020's writing is direct, to the point, and full of action.
  • Now has a sequel based on Xenoverse 2: Pearl's Adventures in the Xenoverse (Be warned that this one is a bit NSFW and a bit more meta.)

To Melt a Warrior's Heart by Sofia Volpina

  • Recommended by kitkatFunky
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Daddy, I don't want you to die!" The girl said with all her being, as if the energy of her words alone would have the strength to decide over her father's fate. "Please!" / Vegeta looked at her for a second or two, at loss of words, then frowned."Who told you this nonsense?" He growled with casual authority in his voice, sounding more coarse than he had both expected and wanted. A heartwarming one-shot about an injured Vegeta (recovering after battle) playing it tough for his pride and his four-year-old daughter Bra.

Dragonball-Legends by Veema

  • Recommended by Altenativefuturefan
  • Status: Dormant; last updated September 2018
  • Synopsis: What if EVERYTHING that happened in DB/Z/GT was a vision of Bardock's? The psychic Saiyan struggles to honor Goku's memory, serve his king, raise Kakarot, and keep Earth from being purged by his own people after evacuating Planet Vegeta. But by trying to sustain the world he remembers, he drastically begins to change Goku's loved ones along the way. It's a brave new world!
  • Comments: A must see for all long time Dragon Ball fans, the amount of detail given to each character is fantastic to read. Bardock's character development is slow but rewarding and satisfying, this is most probably the best AU fanfiction ever conceived and if anyone is skeptical this troper urges you to read the first couple of chapters. What's more, the way the story progresses is phenomenal as well, as the story continues the main plot shifts from just focusing solely on Bardcok to his entire family is rather enthralling to read.

Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy Of Gods by Super Saiyan Knight

  • Recommended by tfsvegeta
  • Vanished from the internet. Pleaese post a link if found.
  • "Synopsis": In a cruel twist of fate that has befallen upon the DBZ universe, Kid Buu has survived the Super Spirit Bomb, emerging more wilder, vicious and angry. Goku and Vegeta now face an increasingly desperate uphill struggle to finish him off. But how will they do it and what impact will this battle have on future events that are to follow?
  • Comments: This is such an epic and amazing story i have read in years. The sharp detail of the story lets you truly see and picture the scenes in your head. The characterizations and dialogues are very well done and spot on. This fic's standout quality are the amazing fight scenes, brilliantly described and wonderfully detailed. This is a MUST READ for all DBZ fans looking for a good fic.

Break Through the Limit by Captain Space

  • Recommended by Silent Stranger
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: For Want Of A Nail, Piccolo's defeat at the 23d World Tournament leads him to train much harder than in canon, leading to him being more powerful than Raditz when the alien arrives. This, in turn, leads to Raditz' survival and subsequent reconnection with his brother. Rather than being left in obscurity as a Starter Villain, Raditz takes on a role as one of the guardians of Earth.
  • Comments: This is one of the better "Raditz Lives" fics out there. His presence also leads to some really interesting twists, such as Zarbon abandoning Frieza in return for one of the wishes on Namek, Trunks being the son of Bulma and Zarbon, and Cooler mortally wounding Frieza on Namek, and Frieza subsequently joining with the Big Gete Star. And many more.

Honor Trip by American Vigor

  • Recommended by gatekeeper827
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Cell becomes one of the Earth's greatest heroes in this epic twist of Dragon Ball reality! Experience the impact of this dramatic and empowering change!
  • Comments: A truly epic story that includes tons of extras. It captures the feel of the show very well - this troper actually felt nostalgic while reading it. The fic is not without flaws - the explanations can get long-winded, though the author's notes can help to prevent confusion, and some of the more complicated discussions (marked by the author) can actually be skipped without hurting the story. Cell always stays within the realm of tolerance. Besides, some of the stuff he does is so awesome you won't even mind. The fic updates every Thursday but is fairly sizable already, and is too long to finish in one sitting. Not that that will stop you from trying. Sadly, it seems to be on permanent hiatus despite rumours of a final movie chapter to finish it.

The Fall of Lord Frieza by Mr. Arkham

  • Recommended by Lord Misfit
  • Status: Complete
  • Synposis: Frieza makes a different choice against Goku on Namek and his life takes a drastically different course. As his empire and family crumble away from him, Frieza must rise from the ashes and become a hero in a galaxy that fears and despises him.
  • Comments: A very interesting take on how Frieza could turn into a hero after his loss to Goku on Namek. Instead of immediately renouncing his evil ways, the former lord of the universe is subject to a rash of events that change his view of things forever. New characters are present, along with some more focus on Piccolo and the human characters. However, the Buu saga is ignored, being replaced by a saga revolving around Hatchiyak and Dr. Raichi's plot for revenge on the Saiya-jin.

Guardian By Mr Arkham

  • Recommended by Silent Stranger
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Goku's ship crashes into Kami's lookout upon its arrival on Earth. Under the tutelage of Kami, Goku, or Kakarot as his name now remains, grows into becoming the new guardian of Earth.
  • Comments: From the author of The Fall of Lord Frieza, this troper has to say that this is definitely the better story. While it glosses over the majority of the Franchise/Dragonball sagas, up until the release of King Piccolo, since Kakarot spends most of his childhood training with Kami and Popo on the Lookout, the story is infinitely engaging. It also gives large roles to forgotten characters like Yajirobe and Nam of all people, who puts the death blow on Nappa

Triple Identity by Lucifer-Allheart

  • Recommended by Comprende
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Gohan has been working at the CC since he was 15, but now at age 18 his mom forces him to go to high school. How will Gohan fit in while trying to keep his identity as half-alien, superhero, AND scientist hidden? Gohan x Videl high-school fic with some twists
  • Comments: Very original story, with a great focus on not just the earth-shattering DBZ battles, but interesting side characters. The further in the story goes, the better it gets, with some surprising twists, but all are well built-up and the character development is extremely well done. The action scenes are few and far between, but all outstanding and extremely exciting.

Dragonball Z: The Earthling Chronicles by FinalFlashX

  • Recommended by capeclare
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: For Want Of A Nail. During the battle with Raditz, Goku is injured too greatly to make the ultimate sacrifice in the battle for Earth's fate, leaving the door open for someone else to step in and be the hero. Follow this re-telling of DBZ where the Earthlings are the main focus of the story.
  • Comments: Very original story, bringing into focus the characters who were more or less forgotten after Dragon Ball and allowing them to shine. The author has also brought back character who were developed in the old series but were simply never seen again making them likable motivated characters. So far, has mostly focused on Tien as he has ascended to the mantle of Earth's protector, but the author has also shown a remarkable ability to characterize almost every character in the cast extremely well while allowing the lesser known characters of the series their Day In The Lime Light.

Two Of A Kind by Lucifer-Allheart

  • Recommended by Comprende
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An old saying in Martial Arts goes; 'To defeat your enemy, you must first defeat yourself.' But what can you do, when you are the enemy? Can you defeat yourself? What will Gohan do, now that the ultimate enemy has been revealed: Gohan himself.
  • Comments: A rather dark Gohan-centric fic that manages to captivate the reader within the first two chapters and simply doesn't let go. An interesting concept is taken to it's extreme and for once we see the consequences of what would happen if a DBZ fighter would turn against the people. The most fascinating thing about this fic is that it isn't simply a battle of Good vs Evil. Gohan and his enemy are both well-developed and have done their fair share of bad things. The character development is well-done, the action scenes are action-packed and the villains and characters are all well-developed.

Kuririn: Only Human by tim333

  • Recommended by Known Unknown, Baron Praxis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Framed as an autobiography by an aging Krillin, this story details his life from his leaving the monastery in Dragon Ball to just past his final resurrection in GT, with a few extra stories in between.
  • Comments: An excellent look at the entirety of the Dragon Ball saga from the perspective of the character who has been there for most of it but never quite in focus. Throughout the story Kuririn reminisces about the good times and reflects on the meanings of their adventures from an older wiser standpoint. He talks about how he dealt with his own growing weakness compared to his friends, as well as his own role as one of Earth's protectors. He reflects on his friends, his family, their enemies, and the nuances of the world around him, all with his own distinctive personality, and as a result shows sides of all the characters of the series, not just himself, in interesting ways. The story hits adventure, comedy, drama, and tragedy in the distinctive Dragon Ball style, and the writing is very personal - with the impression that Kuririn is talking directly to the audience - interspersed with a few scenes of his family interacting with him as he writes.

Vengeance by catgirl26

  • Recommended by Joebro
  • Status: Dormant
  • Warning: Definitely deserves its 'M' rating, also comes with a slash warning and a strangeness warning. I mean, come on, Android 16xChichi???
  • Synopsis: AU, largely BV,with other pairings. With Earth destroyed, Bulma and the Z gang find themselves in an outer space guerrilla war against a tyrant. Can the mysterious Vengeance help her win the war against Frieza, and more importantly, the ruthless Vegeta?
  • Comments: This is a very hard fic to describe. Very AU, somewhat dark, but seems almost canon in the way events play out. Dark elements include Goku going near-crazy from starvation; the only reason he doesn't is because he eats Piccolo's arm, repeatedly. Also includes some very strange ships that this troper ended up liking, namely Puar/Raditz??

President For A Day by Darke Angelus

  • Recommended by Joebro, Elenor, Skibi, Kagimizu
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Bulma comes down with the flu Vegeta takes over Capsule Corp. for the day, much to the horror of executives of a rival company who had hoped to intimidate the heiress into a deal. One-shot.
  • Comments: It's always hilarious watching people underestimate Vegeta. The ending is delightfully half-sweet, and half-horrifying. Eight thousand words makes for a decent sized one-shot, as well.
    • The fanfic is absolutely excellent, and displays all characters quite well and in-character. It really puts into perspective the personality Vegeta had after the events of the Buu Saga, taking his character development and rolling with it to a point where in this humble Troper's opinion, it's better.

Crimson by GothicDream

  • Recommended by Joebro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: For the sake of Earth, a deal must be made. A broken soul must face the horrors of his past. Lovers are torn apart, and blood is shed. Our heroes learn that it takes more than strength to survive, and a prince will learn that redemption isn't easy. Canon pairings.
  • Comments: Incredibly well written. Goes very in depth into what exactly happens to the rest of the universe after Freeza, and conveniently pulls the cast into it without making them the center of attention. Somewhat Vegeta-centric, and, as hinted in the summary, manages to avoid making the cast too overpowered for their enemies, despite taking place after the Buu saga. Updates are recent, and it's already a nice long read.

Point Of No Return by NiteRyde

  • Recommended by jjgp1112; maybebaby
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Trunks goes too far back in time and ends up on a planet being purged by Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz. Trunks reluctantly joins the trio and is exposed to the darkness that is his father's past. Complete.
  • Comments: The writing in this story is absolutely spectacular. The author pulls no punches in her portrayal of Vegeta, as he's every bit the monster he was at that point in time. The plot is gripping and full of twists and turns that will keep you reading, and the characterization is phenomenal.
    • YMMV on this one. Vegeta, unlike in canon, shows almost no signs of changing at all, and Trunk's involvement inadvertently sends everything down the tubes. This fic is a horror story, that starts out bad and ends up worse. Well written, but only read it if you want to see the entire world go to hell.
      • Given that the story is now complete, I can say that the above entry has some things wrong...but it's spot on with others. The way in which Trunks affects his fellow Saiyans is slow and subtle, but the payoff is well worth the read. Plus, Raditz lives!

Cold World by jjgp1112 (rewrite here)

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Gohan is kidnapped by Raditz and against his will, is forced to work alongside him, Vegeta, and Nappa under Frieza. These are his struggles, as he's exposed to a world no child should have to experience.
  • Comments: The author takes a few cues from "Point of No Return" and hits it out of the park. The writing is phenomenal and the author builds a believable AU where Gohan's abduction causes significant changes to the DBZ universe. Cannot recommend this one enough.

Dead Race by HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An AU where Frieza has Goku, Vegeta, and their families captured for experiments for ten years and the human Z fighters plus Videl work on a ship together. Until Gohan manages to escape Frieza, meets Videl, and hides on the ship.
  • Comments: This is an amazing AU that somewhat reminds me of Firefly. It has good development with the characters, and shows good relationships between them. The action has great pace, and the plot is well thought-out. It's a WIP, but has regular updates.
    • This fic is now complete as of April 17th, 2012.

The Middle by DoraMouse

  • Recommended by J the Drafter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Why Hercule decided to claim the credit for defeating Cell.
  • Comments: This is the most mature, complex and detailed look at Hercule's character I've read. The Hercule presented here is a man with complex motivations, and the strange mix of pragmatism and altruism is almost heartbreaking.

Wish for the Past by Burenda

Concerned for his friend's safety, Trunks soon joins him, and together with Raditz and Vegeta they travel from Vegeta-sei to Earth, meeting up with family and friends and trying to find a way back home.
  • Comments: The writer doesn't get all the facts quite right, notably ages and the like, but has a solid plot and complete characterization of all those involved. Though she's not above a little humor thrown in here or there. A good read for those who find Bardock an underused character.

To Be A Hero by Engar

  • Recommended by J the Drafter, Lord Mudkip

Raditz's Return by Dragoness Eclectic

  • Recommended by Comartemis, Elenor, Wild Okapi

When a newly-dead Vegeta seeks out an old comrade in hell with a personal request, Raditz finds himself thrust back into the world of the living as a specter charged with protecting Vegeta's family and his own nephews.
  • Comments: Not much to say about this one. It's good — which is rare in DBZ fanfiction if the sparsity of this page is any indication — to the point of being better than canon, and the villain shakes up the My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours cycle in interesting ways; instead of just being stronger than the heroes, the new villain is tricky and just plain hard to kill.

KiBlind by Sholio

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Earth is threatened by a new enemy, and they've figured out how to cancel out the ability to use ki. How will the Z Senshi fare when forced to protect the Earth while inflicted with this bizarre and crippling limitation?
  • Comments: This is a fun story. The author brings back all the minor characters that got pushed to the side and makes them active and useful. The Z fighters are forced to fight strategically and cautiously, and they're forced to think as well as punch their way through problems. The author does a good job keeping everybody in character. Be warned, there's some swearing, which can be a little jarring. Also, the whole theme of, "Use your head, not just your fist," does get a little Anvilicious, but that kink aside this story is excellent.

Eclipse by Doramouse

  • Synopsis: Android creation explained, human potential expanded upon and the details of world politics examined. Set between the Freeza and Cell sagas, explodes the effects of the Garlic Jr. saga. Recommended for fans of the first Dragon Ball series. In progress.
  • Comments: This is a brilliant and thoughtful story without falling into any cliche traps . The author brings back all the minor characters that got pushed to the side and makes them active, useful and interesting but in realistic ways. The brilliant and imaginative thought put into the world of DBZ by this author is brilliant, 40 chapters long and still going strong the OCs are done tastefully and well they are well thought out and their interaction with the story makes sense and works; obviously this does not take away from the series' normal characters. I cannot say much else for fear of spoiling, truly an excellent fic and it deserves more love.

  • Comments: It's a neat concept that handled well, though the writing is rough and Tien, Puar, and Chaotzu are forgotten. However, the characterization is good and the plotting is deft. Besides, it has (almost) every character who never did anything beating on the characters who got too much attention.

Unexpected Majin by rainbowraindeer

  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Rather than Vegeta becoming the Majin slave of Babidi during the early Buu Saga, the wizard chooses another Saiyan... Gohan.
  • Comments: This story seems to be unfortunately abandoned now (two years as of this addition), but the 30 chapters of this story are all extremely well-written and take the Majin concept in an interesting direction. Serious bonus points as well for using the canon events to take a much darker turn than the anime in a way that makes sense for the character.

  • Recommended by Sparkysharps
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After the Cell Games, Chichi tries to cheer up Gohan...by defeating Vegeta in combat?! But what she gets is more than anyone could have bargained for...
  • Comments: This fic starts off as deceptively simple (though well-written) fluff before it pulls a total Wham Moment, at which point the fic explodes into an epic with a well-blended combination of comedy, action, and drama. Instead of the standard My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours fare the villain goes the way of David Xanatos, and seemingly "useless" characters such as Puar, Chichi and Yamcha finally get their chance to shine.

Talent and Potential by Resistance Knight

  • Recommended by Indalecio

  • AU version of Saiyaman Saga and afterwards.
  • Synopsis: There's 3 major arcs. The first, where Gohan enters high school, but the Red Rain army are moving in to try to take control of Satan City, and they've duplicated some of Dr. Gero's android technology. The second arc has Babidi planting a dark seed into Gohan and watching the chaos unleashed. The third arc has an uninterrupted Budokai.
  • Comments: Very well done. Several minor characters from the original Dragon Ball saga make an appearance and are fleshed out. Spelling could use a little work, as there's more than the occasional misspelled word. Complete, but continued in Torment and Pain (Dormant)
    • Typos like "murmured in disbelieve" and "pail in comparison" make this story hard to take seriously, although the writing and plotting was interesting enough to keep me reading for a few paragraphs. -Reyemile

  • AU/Genderbent version of Dragon Ball
  • Synopsis: In this retelling of the "Search for the Dragonballs" saga, Son Goku is now a little girl with a monkey tail and superhuman strength who is found by a bratty teenaged boy named Bulma, who is on a quest to find seven orbs that can summon a wish-granting dragon. Along the way, they meet many friends and enemies.
  • Comments: This is almost definitely, in my opinion, the best genderbending fanfiction ever. While the story changed many genders of some of the characters (ex. Goku and Yamcha are females, Bulma and Chi-Chi are males), it both kept and switched around many of the important plot points of the original manga without making the characters act out-of-character (ex. Bulma wanting to wish for the perfect girlfriend, Yamcha wanting to wish away her fear of boys)

  • AU/Genderbent version of Dragon Ball
  • Synopsis: Like the other genderbent fanfic above it, it is another retelling of the "Search for the Dragonballs" saga. However, the author has stated that she wants her fic to go through this arc to the end of Buu Arc, meaning that this genderswapped fic is a retelling of the whole story of Dragon Ball
  • Comments: Even though it just started and is currently on-going, it is quite an interesting read, as this writer keeps the characters much like how they are in the original story, only with their genders reversed. Plus, it still keeps the vibe of the original without having to make so much changes.

From The Past by Dreamwraith

  • Recommended by Blazar
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Two separate plans awaken and entwine after Frieza's death, leaving Goku and Piccolo to deal with their nightmarish results. But not even they could foresee disaster. It has come down to one final battle... how do you free a mind trapped by a demon?
  • Comments: Piccolo-centric; very well-done with lots of interesting plot twists, this story has a rather unique outlook on Piccolo and his demonic origins. For the most part, everyone is in character; though Chi-Chi and Kami of all people get some slight Death Eater treatment it's nothing gratuitous, and if you can tolerate that it is otherwise an excellent story.

No More Forgiveness by The Masked Otaku

  • Recommended by Blazar
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Tired of an absent father, Gohan reaches his breaking point when Goku leaves his family to train with Uub. Gohan's clear that he never wants to see his father again but what happens when Goku comes back for a visit? How will everyone deal with this issue?
  • Comments: Picking up right at the point where Z left off, this story takes a rather darker look at the effects that Goku's repeated abandonment have had on his family, and on Gohan in particular. The drama is gripping and the author mercifully avoids Ron the Death Eater territory with regards to Goku's character; his bad behavior is due to his childlike thoughtlessness rather than a desire to hurt, and once he is made aware of the pain his actions have caused he makes a genuine effort to make amends with his family even if he doesn't ultimately succeed in Gohan's case. The ending is both satisfying and realistic, as well as being true to the spirit of the series.
  • Warnings: YMMV on Gohan's characterization; some may consider his anger with his father extreme to the point of being OOC, especially what with screaming out "I hate him!" at one point, and refusing to give Goku another chance even after he has shown remorse. His changed attitude is, however, given a tolerable explanation within the context of the story.

What Happens in Pepper City by Nameless Boast

  • Recommended by Dellanotte
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Following a night of drunken debauchery, Trunks finds a shocking slip of paper in his room. 'Marriage License,' he says, showing his best friend the sheet. 'Trunks Briefs and Goten Son. That's definitely us, alright.' *Non-Yaoi. No. Really.*"
  • Comments: It really isn't, either. If anything, it mocks the whole pairing into the ground... hilariously. It's our boys' childhood antics taken to the logical conclusion, and one can only wish that the author had included the look on Vegeta's face.

Human Limitations by Epic Yamcha

  • Recommended by Hyp3r B14d 3
  • Status: Dead (last updated February 2017)
  • Synopsis: What if Raditz touched down in West City, instead of an empty field? An unlikely fighter has to face the odds and protect the city without Goku to back him up, wildly changing the destiny of the entire planet... and his own. This is his story.
  • Comments: Instead of crashing out in a field and killing one farmer before going hunting for Goku, Raditz crashes into west city, kills several dozen people, and gets into a fight with Yamcha. One lucky tail-grabbing victory later, Yamcha, now in bad need of medical attention, ends up being abducted by Dr. Gero. Piccolo arrives just in time for Raditz to wake up, and the two get into a fight. Goku arrives just in time to misunderstand the situation, taking Piccolo as the attacker and Raditz as the defender. And from there, things spiral further out of control. All in all, this fic is very well written. The characters feel in character, even as the plot pits them against each other and teams them up with villains, both knowingly and unknowingly.

Dragon Ball X - Volume I: Eternal Protectors and Volume II: Guardians of Tranquility by Animaster21

  • Recommended by Killakoala 95
  • Status:
    • Volume I: Complete
    • Volume II: Dormant
  • Synopsis: After narrowly escaping the wrath of Frieza upon Planet Vegeta, a team of Saiyans descends on Planet Haven to hide. But Haven isn't without problems of its own, and Blitzo, Rhuna, and Makurin - along with team mechanic and leader Zeang - quickly find themselves involved in a battle spanning generations.
  • Comments: This is a decent fic depicting the lives of several escaped Saiyans and their own struggles on a planet Earth of their own, taking place parallel to canon but rarely involving canon characters. It's a little bit into the second "volume" (of a planned five, judging by the author referring to it as a Pentology), and while it starts off kinda amateur-ish, starts to really improve around halfway through the first volume. It's actually got a very involved story once it gets going, with plenty of characters and a lot of good fight scenes. Dragon Ball X also expands on some of the more drifted-over explanations of the original series and in later chapters begins to incorporate a much more realistic perspective on super-powered fighting. Definitely worth a read, and it could do with some attention.

Yamcha's Day byDeathGoblin

  • Recommended by Gordon Schumway
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Humiliated, embarrassed and proven all but useless by the Saiyans, Yamcha long ago gave up on the idea of ever being one of Earth's great heroes. For a long time, all he could do was stand by and watch as the Saiyans protected him and everyone else from threats to the Earth. But when a new menace appears, one that even the Saiyans are powerless against, can Yamcha find it within himself to save not only the Saiyans, but the Earth itself?
  • Comments: As someone who always hated the insults directed at Yamcha by some Dragonball Z fans, this fic is a breath of fresh air. Not only does it give A Day in the Limelight to a character who's long overdue for one, it also features a villain that actually uses planning and intelligence to battle the Z fighters, rather than just brute strength. An underrated gem.

Real Men Don't Make Sandwiches byAn English Education

  • Recommended by dokedoke
  • Status: Dormant (last updated October 2017)
  • Synopsis: How a well-constructed sandwich brings together two unlucky and unlikely souls: one the prince of a dead race who has bound himself to Earth for honor; the other a lowly monk who just can't seem to catch a break. A comedy. Probably.
  • Comments: Unfortunately not updated frequently due to the fact that it seems like the author has a professional gig, but worth the read even for the prologue alone. Taking place a week after Goku's return to Earth and Trunks' warning of the androids, Vegeta finds himself stuck in a kitchen with Krillin, who ends up making the best sandwich of all time. It turns into Krillin asking Vegeta questions about his life and Vegeta begrudgingly answering them. The fic mostly focuses on Vegeta and his life, but there's been some suggestion that the story could be more about Krillin. A seriously funny dark comedy.

AU: A Saiyan Warrior by darksupersayian

  • Recommended by Dreadwolf
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: An AU where Goku never lost his memory as a child. Kakarot develops into the saiyan warrior he was meant to be, as well as the defender of earth.
  • Comments: The author does a different take on the whole "Goku never hit his head" idea by having Bardock leave a recorded message in Kakarot's space pod informing young Kakarot of his Saiyan heritage along with the knowledge that Frieza betrayed the Saiyans. As a result, Goku becomes an entirely different person and this results in many unexpected changes. The author does an incredible job of giving every character some attention and development, none of the characters feel left out or neglected.

  • Synopsis: A quartet of fics that start after GT, when Frieza is resurrected by the Red Dragon balls, quickly spiraling into an epic spanning across planets, generations, and even the different multiverses as the Z-fighters prepare for their greatest foe yet: something that threatens every multiverse.
  • Comments: This series is amazing. Everything, from the writing to the plot to the worldbuilding, is wonderfully done and a treat to read. Characterization is spot-on and the numerous OCs are all interesting—Gurasia in particular is a favorite of this troper's. It even gives some of the lesser-used characters like Chi-Chi and Bra expanded roles. The only downside is that Lisalu never finished the fourth book, but you're honestly missing out if you let that stop you from reading it.
  • Warnings: Like all of Lisalu's works, it has explicit sex scenes and touches on some very dark subjects, including Child Soldiers, torture, brainwashing, and rape, though it does remain respectful in the last case.

  • Synopsis: The Lantern Corps fusion AU that absolutely no one asked for. Young Son Gohan becomes a Green Lantern after receiving a ring from a dying alien. As time goes on, more and more rings and lanterns start showing up. The world becomes even more bizarre than it already was, and Tien is a grumpy gus who likes to remind people that they used to be martial artists, dammit.
  • “Comments”: A Girl Named Ed is one of those special fanwriters with a real talent for interesting, creative, well-written A Us, and this one is probably the strongest proof of this you’re going to get, because this should be some of the strongest crack out there, and it isn’t – a quick peek at the author’s tumblr page and all the thought she’s put into it will tell you that much. This fic asks the important question “What if Gohan had become a Green Lantern prior to the android saga?” But it also touches on Gohan’s lingering guilt, fear, and other emotions from the Saiyan and Namek sagas, works on developing the relationships among the cast, and even finds time for some romance (please note, the author is fond of rare pairs and, if you give them a chance, you will be too by the end of the fic – Ed’s as skilled with romantic chemistry as she is A Us). Funny, serious, and sweet by turns, this series is a definite must-read if you’re in the mood for something strange, new and fun!

  • Comments: For a DBZ fanfic, this one is the most emotional and the most epic. This tells the story of a man's struggle against monsters not even those stronger than him were able to defeat. You will cry, you will go "awww", you will even go "No! Give Gohan a break!" If you like Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, you will definitely love this fanfic!

  • Synopsis: After falling off of Snake Way and into Hell on his way to train with King Kai, Goku meets up with people whom he never thought he'd get to know. How will these relationships change Goku's life as he goes through the trials and tribulations of the Universe?
  • Comments: If you ever wanted Goku to have his biological family back, this fic is right for you. The story is well written, the plot is engaging, and the author isn't afraid of deviating from canon, since yes, Bardock, Gine and Raditz's presence in the story dramatically alters how some events develop, and even if others happen in a similar fashion to canon, don't assume anything. The author also goes to great lengths to keep the human cast relevant (Chi-chi included, who not only is she much more likeable while keeping true to her character, but her friendship with Gine is a joy to read). Overall, a pretty excellent fanfic that won't disappoint.

"Order and Might" by N17E2000

  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: The author takes an interesting approach to canon material. The Planet Vegeta exists and it's populated not only by Saiyans, but also humans. And there is good explanation why two races coexisting together. Goku was never sent to Earth. Instead, he lives with his Saiyan family and is called Kakarot. However he still had the accident that erased his memories and blood-thirsty Saiyan nature. Because of it, many Saiyans treat him like an outcast. Later, he becomes friends with Krillin and Bulma and receives training from Master Roshi. Basically speaking, this fanfic takes some elements of Dragon Ball universe and remodeled it in a completely new way. The world-building is truly fantastic. The same can be said about the interpretation of some canon characters.
  • Pairing: It's not romance oriented story, but you can find some Bardock/Gine moments and... maybe a little bit of Raditz/Launch?

  • Comments: This is one of the finest fanfiction pieces-it's a Tear Jerker at times, especially at the end where she fights Vegeta who doesn't recognize her and goes Super Saiyan. It evades the usual pitfalls of time travel fic and what Bulma goes through in the past is truly heart-wrenching.

He returns with the news that Earth has been destroyed and his brother captured. But he also brings with him someone who can turn the course of the war, a scientist by the name of Bulma Briefs, his new wife. Then she catches the eye of Prince Vegeta and the stage is set for a love triangle played out before the backdrop of war, where desire and love battle with honor and authority and the future can only be seen by one man, Bardock who has returned from captivity with his youngest son to see to the destruction of the Cold Empire.
  • Comments: The writer of this fic never wastes a character. All of them are distinct and examined with voices and points of view that do not contradict canon for the canonical characters and are more than mouthpieces for original ones. One or two places skirt lemon, but nothing to explicit. Very well written so that no plot overrides the other and no character or race forces another to be neglected. All very realistic and sure to keep the reader interested until the end.

Vegeta then decides to kidnap Bulma and the three go to Namek to use their Dragonballs. Bulma begins to connect with the two Saiyans and when they realize Frieza is on his way to Namek, she is able to convince them to use the Dragonballs for something other than immortality. Instead, Vegeta uses the wishes to bring back planet Vegeta, transport themselves and the Namekians there, and revive the entire Saiyan race. Frieza wouldn't bother looking for them on a planet he believes doesn't exist, so the Saiyans and Nameks are safe, but only for now...
  • Commentary: A very well done AU fic. The characterizations are spot-on and the romance between Bulma and Vegeta is developing nicely.
    • Good story and characterizations, but fair warning that the author is doing a rewrite of the story and the last update was of Dec 26, 11.

  • Commentary: Very addictive. The characterization and pacing are impressive, as is the complex but seamless introduction of Saiyan culture and biology. (Perhaps not too surprising, since the author double-majored in English and Biology.) Everyone is pitch-perfect, from Bardock to the Z-warriors. Still unfinished, but you'd do a disservice to yourself to pass over the fic for that reason — there are Author's Notes available if you can't wait to know how it ends. This troper was in love at first sight, and a re-read ten years later convinced me its excellence was hardly just nostalgia talking.

I Wanna Murder You by Kinoha

  • Pairing(s): Goku/ChiChi
  • Synopsis: When everything is lost and you have no meaning anymore why not to wipe out all traces of it? Consumed by dark rage ChiChi has a surprise for Goku but which one is the real surpriser?
  • Commentary: NSFW. Humorous. Chichi lays awake one night contemplating her life as a wife and a mother and suddenly decides to try to smother a sleeping Goku, the strongest being in the universe, with a pillow. Because sometimes married couples wanna kill their spouses. A look into how nearly thirty years of marriage between Goku and ChiChi still works.

Second Chances by Arcadia81

  • Recommended by tvtropeslover93
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Goku/Chichi
  • Synopsis: Kakarot was considered to be the strongest Saiyan warrior. Princess Chichi was considered to be Earth's strongest hero. When Kakarot lands on Earth on a false mission by the jealous Saiyan Prince Vegeta, what will happen when two extremely powerful fighters meet? Will they be enemies...or lovers?
  • Commentary: This is an interesting twist on the whole "what if Kakarot never became Goku?" thing! In this A/U, Kakarot's change from villain to hero is surprisingly real and somewhat touching. Plus, his growing romance with Chichi (who basically takes Goku's place as Earth's strongest fighter) is quite beautiful and real, too. There are few naughty bits between the two, but it's not totally NSFW.

Always You by smee-chan

  • Recommended by Thanos 6
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Trunks/Goten (slash, obviously)
  • Synopsis: One confession starts off a chain of them.
  • Comments: This story perfectly encapsulates the way I think that Goten and Trunks's sexual orientations work with regard to each other. Contains If It's You, It's Okay-similar bits which may not be to everyone's taste, but for these two, it works. Even aside from the orientation, they're written wonderfully in character. Just ignore the little Gratuitous Japanese here and there.

A Glad Day by Lisalu

  • Recommended by Helly
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Vegeta/Bulma
  • Synopsis: This is one of the best pieces of writing this tropes has read, ever. Glad Day is a five-parts fic, Lisalu's own take on the popular "Bulma is taken to Planet Vegeta" theme. It's beautifully written and has a great characterization, but it's really, really dark and very unsettling. While reading the first part, people might wonder why this fiction is in the shipping section, but saying anything else about the plot would be a spoiler; all I can say is that it's simply amazing. read it.

Overprotective by Professor Snaglefoompus

  • Recommended by J Blaze
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Gohan/Videl
  • Synopsis: A hypothetical situation: What if Gohan didn't remember who Hercule was when he first went to high school?
  • Comments: Wildly and unrepentantly AU, Professor Snaglefoompus's brilliant homage to the DBZ series is absolutely hysterical. The author hangs a lampshade wherever he can, and probably some places he shouldn't. Features absolutely minimal respect for the Fourth Wall and over 9000 shout-outs to our favorite memes. Practically all the characters are Butt Monkeys, but Sharpner especially becomes The Chew Toy to the ensuing Humiliation Conga. Although it calls itself a Shipping fic, this is really more of a Affectionate Parody. Even if you're not fond of the pairing or the main characters, should be read just for the funny.
    • The fic starts off fairly serious until the point at which Sharpener starts acting like a ten-year-old, at which point the fic takes a sharp turn towards silliness.

Universe16 by Katsuargi

  • Recommended by Indalecio
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Vegetto/Bulma
  • Synopsis: Vegetto remains fused after Majin Buu self-destructs.
  • Comments: Not strictly a shipping fic, but it does pair up Vegetto and Bulma rather than Vegetto and Chi Chi which is why its in the shipping section. Vegetto deals with being the strongest person in the Dragon Ball universe, the remaining threat of the Majin Curse, and training his children to protect the next generation. Some significant appearances by Krilin, Tien, Chaotzu and Yamcha in later chapters as well.

Chikyuul by Lisalu

  • Recommended by Elenor
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Vegeta/Bulma
  • Synopsis: An AU where Earth is destroyed while Vegeta and Nappa were en route. Bulma and Vegeta work together, alone on the Ginyu's ship trying to get the dragon balls so they can each get their wish.
  • Comments: This was hard to write a synopsis for. Really it's two characters getting together in a way that hasn't been beaten to death. They are in character and we get a "alien bond" that works for the story. It ends well. I really like this fic, I just don't know how to say it.

Am I Still Beautiful To You? by Freeza's Woman

  • Recommended by Biggest Smalls

  • Pairing(s): Frieza/Zarbon
  • Synopsis: Frieza is dying and Zarbon takes care of him.
  • Comments: There's really nothing to say except that it's beautiful. Zarbon really does love Frieza, even when he's throwing up all over himself. It's a Tear Jerker, though.

Tomorrow Dreams of Yesterday by Spirrow

  • Recommended by Firefury Amahira
  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairing(s): Trunks/OC ... maybe?
  • Synopsis: Set three years after Trunks returns to his future and destroys the androids, the half-Saiyan finds himself dealing with, in order: his mother conspiring to set him up because she thinks he needs a girlfriend, a group of alien refugees with mind-reading abilities, a prophecy he can't make heads or tails of, helping Bulma set up a brand new college, and a dance student with a most unexpected secret...
  • Comments: Despite putting this with the shipping fics, 18 chapters in no real pairings have materialized just yet, though it's pretty clear there will be later on. The writing is well-done and the story has good pacing and believable original characters. Even if you don't like OCs, this one is well-designed. Little bit of a trigger warning though, as rape is mentioned in regards to a character's backstory, though the subject is handled in a fairly respectful manner.

Twice Upon a Time by Ninja Whisper

  • Recommended by Slo Motion
  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairing(s): Vegeta/Bulma
  • Synopsis: All Vegeta wants to do is fall asleep and wake up to see his dead wife, Bulma, in the Otherworld. Instead, Vegeta wakes up rejuvenated over thirty years in the past to find that he's been given a second chance.
  • Comments: A sweet story that's currently in progress. It’s about an elderly Vegeta getting a second chance with Bulma when he's sent back in time to the beginning of Android Saga. It's nice to see a softer side of Vegeta and the scenes with him and Bulma are very cute and heartwarming. It starts out with B/V getting together then retells the Android Saga briefly (at least compared to the anime and manga) and eventually goes off into more original territory. Very well written and worth the read, but be noted there are a few lemons scattered throughout the story so if you're bothered by more mature content, this might be the story for you to read. But if you're okay with sex scenes, then I cannot recommend this story enough.

Culture Shock by If Looks Could Kill

  • Recommended by sloth4
  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairing(s): Vegeta/Bulma
  • Synopsis: A/U How will Bulma deal with living under the same roof as a pureblood Saiyan who possesses an entirely different set of cultural norms/behaviors? Can Vegeta cope with life on Earth, or will the culture shock push him over the edge?
  • Comments: An AU where Vegeta never left Capsule Corp to find Goku prior to Trunks's arrival and never really leaves ever. The romance is long and drawn out and beautifully written. There's also a bit of worldbuilding for saiyan culture and biology. And the character development for Bulma and Vegeta is great. Also, Vegeta still has a tail. Because... reasons.

Lab Monkey by Tempestt

  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Vegeta/Bulma
  • Synopsis: AU VB Bulma has captured Vegeta before he has a chance to escape Earth. She now has him imprisoned in her lab. What will the beautiful scientist do with the deadly prince?
  • Comments: Love this story. It really shows just how brutal the galaxy is and why Vegeta is the monster he is before coming to Earth. And just how strong Bulma has to be to put up with him and his quirks.

  • Recommended by Thanos 6
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Trunks/Goten
  • Synopsis: When Goten and Trunks are both dumped by their girlfriends for Valentine's Day, they realize their perfect match has been with them all along.
  • Comments: (Link goes to Chapter One. Here's Chapter Two and Chapter Three.) Possibly the best Truten story out there, period. There's lots of sweet romantic moments, but also lots of sexy erotic ones (this story is rated NC-17 for a reason!). A nice focus on just how inseparable the two of them always have been and always will be.

  • Synopsis: The path to True Love is an arduous one. After years of bad luck, the girl of Krillin's dreams has finally walked into his life. But unfortunately - so has the woman of his nightmares. A Romantic Comedy... with Cyborgs.
  • Comments: Features an interesting plot and a tone that I think really captures the series' humor. The author incorporates a surprising amount of the supporting cast and introduces us to a few new characters who are pretty fun. All in all it's the most hilarious, heartwarming and genuine portrayal I've ever seen of this pairing. I cannot recommend it enough.
