headraline on Archive of Our Own
  • Recommended by: angryclickernoise
  • Comments: Headraline has many D:BH fics to her name, all of them beautifully written and so much fun to read. Would definitely recommend to people who want to see more Connor/Markus, AUs and post-canon fics!

     General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Oregon Trail by Zalein
  • Recommended by: 307020
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: North wasn’t interested at first. Simon definitely wasn’t, and Markus was busy. Connor started because it was a new lead to investigate. Josh? Josh was there before it was cool. Somehow they all wound up playing an android-only MMO called Oregon Trail, and it changed everything. Features: friendship, blackmail, Connor going deviant early, and androids coming down with virtual cases of android cholera. What more could anyone want?
  • Comments: A scary good example of crack played straight. This fic touches on a lot of the messier relationships and consequences canon ignores, and packs some serious character trauma despite the absurd premise.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Connor gets a glimpse of 'JERICHO'. He also gets a glimpse of something else, but androids feel no emotion. At least, they're not supposed to. But something is wrong.
  • Comments: This fic is a breakdown of the scene where Connor becomes traumatized from accessing Simon's memories right before Simon shoots himself.

Elapse by KillTheNoise

lifetime in repeat by paintmybonespretty

  • Recommended by: yin_13147
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Connor doesn't know why he's doing this. There must be a glitch in his system somewhere, right? For him to want to do this. He's afraid of death but he needs to die. How is that logical?

Too little, too late by agonizingsingularity

  • Recommended by: VS-Milton
  • Status: Dormant; last updated June 2018
  • Synopsis: AU where Connor was deviant-minded and close to Hank but didn't get time to deviate when confronting Markus at Jericho, and Hank never confronted Connor the night he took out Markus because he was too drunk.
  • Comments: So far one of the few fics with the RK900 in it, mainly focused on Hank's reaction to Connor's replacement and RK900's growing relationship with him.

not human nor machine by fixandforget

  • Recommended by: VS-Milton
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Freedom doesn’t last for a month before Connor is back to investigating deviants. Perhaps it wasn’t such a good thing that androids were becoming so human—too human.

The Personal Day by HeyMurphy

  • Recommended by: yin_13147
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The more Hank spoke, the more Connor understood the truth of the situation. The detective’s gruff baritone grated through his chest like churning gravel, and the fluorescent light from the kitchen glistened in his wet eyes. Connor observed the bathrobe, the woolen slippers, and the drawn, exhausted way Hank was breathing.

It Was Never About Jealousy by ChangeTheCircumstances

  • Recommended by: celestialmoonfire
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: No one knows Gavin Reed is an illegitimate child and the half-brother to Elijah Kamski. At least no one does until Connor does a fucking DNA analysis on him without him realizing it.

Flowchart by albawrites

  • Recommended by: GuardianTempest
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: The origins are the same. Markus, a caretaker for an old, famous artist. Kara, a household model involved in an abusive home. Connor, a special investigator prototype with a mission to find deviants. The origins are the same, but the beginning of their stories are different. The end will be what's needed of them.
  • Comments: Connor is sent by Amanda to go undercover as Todd's replacement android. Kara is restored but sent to Carl Manfred's home. Markus is hired by the police department as Hank's partner. This fic has interesting interactions exploring how would the other protagonists react in the others' situations.

stay out of trouble by yellow_caballero

  • Recommended by: ggoulden1695
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Unemployment was not the best thing to ever happen to Connor, but it was high on the list. The best thing to ever happen to Connor was the sight of a Corgi wearing a small cowboy hat leashed to a post in front of the liquor shop. The second best thing to ever happen to him was the emancipation of his people from slavery and the opening of negotiations for equal rights. But unemployment may come in at a solid third.
  • Comment: This fic hilarious with Connor's wry and sassy remarks on everything, basically behaving like a rebellious teenager in this. Yet there's an undercurrent of angst that makes the ending all the more sweet.

Empathy (and other dead weight) by CynKLBouns

  • Recommended by: celestialmoonfire
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sure, now everyone wanted to hold hands, give out flowers, and pretend machines were real boys and girls or some shit. As if they weren’t hunting them through every city like rats just a month ago. People going nuts over their crusade one moment, stinking up the streets with the fires, and all of a sudden everything just fucking stops as though anything changed. Nothing fucking changed A machine was still a machine, no matter how fancy its program.
  • Comments: There's another story in the series titled 'Iris' that's also worth a look

Parking Lot Dinner Theatre by Ravenesta

  • Recommended by: celestialmoonfire
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Connor is late, Gavin makes a bad bust, and the Manfreds learn that the real family was the junkie little brothers you made along the way. Somewhere, in the distance, Jeffrey Fowler is writing a detailed list of the pros and cons of auto-defenestration. He will have it framed and hung within the week, and he will longingly stare at it for comfort each and every day until his retirement.
  • Comments: The last line of this fic slayed me. Couldn't recommend harder.

Roombas by unacceptable_bisexual

  • Recommended by: celestialmoonfire
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Connor keeps adopting Roombas. Hank decides it's time to talk about it.
  • Comment: Had me laughing and awwing at the same time. "So, you’re telling me… you’re telling me these little shits you’ve been bringing here are actually deviant fucking vacuum cleaners?"

Fog and Ice by ViolentMedic

  • Recommended by: RunicHealer
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This was by far the stupidest thing he’d done in a long time. Hank did a lot of stupid things, but this had to be top five. Driving hundreds of miles for… for a fucking letter. A letter that just couldn’t be real. It had been Cole's name on the envelope. The sticking point was that dead people didn’t write letters. Hank wanders off into a foggy, abandoned town in hopes of finding his long-dead son, and runs into some fucking bullshit on the way.
  • Comment: Delightfully atmospheric and terrifying. Especially creepy when Connor and Hank meet up after Connor dies the first time.

by my own hand, or none by SunsetOfDoom

  • Recommended by: ggoulden1695

Beyond the Machine by smolfuriousbi

  • Recommended by: kayday
  • Status: Dormant; last updated July 2018
  • Synopsis: Hank and Connor go on an undercover mission to northern Canada to try and track down an anti-android cult. Their cover identities? A father and son duo, moving away from the android hotspot of Detroit. Great for anyone that wants more Hank and Connor parental bonding, and Connor struggling to be more human.

Castaways by SilverKnight16

  • Recommended by: kayday
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: This story picks up immediately after the success of Markus' peaceful revolution. Connor has just narrowly prevented Amanda from reasserting CyberLife's control over his programming. Nearly shooting Markus throws Connor's control over himself into question. There's no time to question whether the people around him are truly safe, because before the city has a chance to catch its collective breath, higher-up CyberLife employees start dropping like flies. The sudden chain of apparent suicides is suspicious to Connor, and quite quickly, he and his partner Lieutenant Hank Anderson are put on the case.

i have loved you so long by estora

  • Recommended by: cartographer
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Set six months after Markus's peaceful revolution, this story is heavily North-centric. North is rescued from a sex-trafficking ring that FBI Agent Anne Shapiro (an original character) has been pursuing for ten years. The one thing that North hates more than a human is owing a human something, but as the story develops so too does her relationship with the human who saved her. Or; North gets the mother figure she absolutely bloody deserves.
  • Comment: Heartbreaking, witty and beautiful and an ode of love to an often-maligned character of the game. Don't be turned off by the original character - she is there, unusually, not as a love interest or self-insert, but a fully formed personality who serves to guide and grow North.

Break Me Slowly by ChangeTheCircumstances

  • Recommended by: celestialmoonfire
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Gavin/Nines (RK900)
  • Synopsis: As the crime rate rises, the police are forced to take back androids, and Gavin finds himself paired up with the last android to come out of Cyberlife since the revolution. Despite their rocky start, they learn to work together until a serial killer falls into Gavin's lap. And then another. Gavin believes they could be tied but no one believes him. Not even his android partner sees the connection. Is he imagining it, or is something there?
  • Comment: This story is amazing, but it's also incredibly dark. Every chapter I read makes my heart rate skyrocket. There is no happy ending for Gavin in this story. My heart broke when I read the last chapter.
