Fanfic Recs / Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Go To

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying twice for here.

These are recommendations made by tropers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. After a few samples, you will be able to note the interests of the tropers recommending them, and judge whether you might be also interested in a certain 'fic.

Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found herenote . Do warn when a fanfic may head into sexualnote  or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Reviews of fics are encouraged, but if you choose to write one, please make it substantive, and give specific details about what you liked / disliked in the fic. If you want to give a fic a thumbs-up without writing a full review, you can add your troper handle to the Recommendations Line. Please refrain from posting "Comments" or Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

For fanfics focused on the cast of Angel, see this page.

Passion of the Nerd's Buffy episode guide

  • Recommended by: Tutankhgeek
  • Not really a fanfic but a review series. With nearly as much humor, intelligence and passion as the show itself, YouTuber Ian Martin reviews every episode of Buffy and Angel in order. Along the way discussing themes, character arcs, subtext, philosophy, behind the scenes details and throwing in some of his own headcanons for a few of the franchise's more ambiguous aspects. For newcomers to the series who might be wary of the somewhat shaky first couple seasons he handily earmarks episodes that are either essential viewing or easily skipped. For anyone like myself who has been disappointed by SFDebris' reticence to cover Buffy this is a must watch.

All About Spike

  • Recommended by: Lagomorph
  • Spike-focused archive, though beyond the Spike focus, pretty much anything goes — any pairing (not necessarily romantic), genre, or time frame. Lots of good stuff. No longer updated, but is in no danger of going down any time soon, as far as I can tell.

The Backstage Series

  • Recommended by: Robert
  • Several stories, taking placing on the edges of the main series, all in the same continuity. Excellent worldbuilding. Includes some AU stories and minor crossovers.

The Buffy/Giles Fanfiction Archive

  • Recommended by: allthebloodybrits
  • Focusing only on the Buffy/Giles pairing, this website is perfect for shippers of this rare ship. It's frequently updated, and as of 2/8/13 has 817 fics and series in the archive. Started in 2007, it is still going strong.

Jedi Buttercup

  • This author writes mainly relationship- and character-driven short-stories and oneshots, most of which are crossovers.

Jet Wolf

  • Recommended by: Andrew
  • A particularly good writer with a talent for character voices. Her continuation of Buffy focuses on returning the Scoobies to their family dynamic and does so in a realistic manner. Essentially, if you disliked General!Buffy, Plotless!Xander or Distanced!Scoobies this fic is the answer. You can test the waters here with some of her gen fic.

Mad-Hamlet

  • Recommended by: Patrick
  • Femslashy work that manages the impossible — being authentically dark without a drop of Wangst. The best of his work causes one to proclaim Mad-Hamlet as Buffy's real daddy. This is a man who takes Earn Your Happy Ending to heart. Must reads include Prisms and Deeper.

Meltha

  • Recommended by: Man Called True:
  • I have yet to see someone else nail the characters quite so well. No new ones in a while, but Meltha was rather prolific before then. Personal favorites: Who Died and Made You the Iron Chef? and Never Send Mom and Sis to a Vamp. Mostly Original Flavor with some angsty diversions.
    • Combined Forces is a brilliant piece of humor.

Twisting the Hellmouth

  • Recommended by: Mickey Moose, Dame-Amaryllis
  • The largest collection of Buffy crossover stories outside of FF.net. If you look hard enough on this archive, you can find crossovers for just about everything, including obscure cartoons, vaguely known literary sources, and fandoms so small they're only comprised of two people. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but that's how it feels.

The Watcher Series, Season One and Season Two by Gumboy.

  • Recommended by: Roo
  • A spin-off virtual series that takes place seven years after S7 and centers on Xander — now armed with Cordelia-style visions and a magic eight ball that actually does tell the truth — moving to Cape Kenneth to be the Watcher for a young Slayer named Olivia "Liv" Fontaine (you may remember her as the baseball-playing little girl from the very last episode). The series is rather OC-heavy, and is written in Script Fic format, but don't let that scare you; the format is used well and captures the traditional witty banter and horror-comedy feel of the Buffyverse, and the OCs are likeable and interesting. The classic Buffy and Angel characters also feature heavily, as the older and established generation which are on call for when the big guns are needed... though apart from Xander (and eventually Spike, who becomes a regular, major character in the second season), most of them remain secondary characters.
    • Unfortunately, the second season hasn't been updated since the sixteenth episode in 2007 — and that episode ends on a rather nasty cliffhanger. There's also some Xander/OC romance, as Xander gets involved with Liv's mother Lucy (who in a staggering return to tradition knows all about her daughter's Slayer powers from the get-go). Consider yourself warned.
    • The author has migrated all stories to AO3. While he's given up on finishing the series he did add a summary for the final story and the end of the cliffhanger.

    General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Here's Your Accordion by Drakensis

  • Recommended by: Looney Toons, Kalimada
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A twenty-something British man wakes up in Buffy Summers' body on the first day of the TV series. While not exactly happy with the situation, he'll use what he can remember of the first season to make the best of his situation and maybe make some better choices than the "real" Buffy did. Now if only (s)he can figure out why there's a 10-year-old Dawn hanging around. Oh, and yeah, stop obviously drooling over Willow. In the ten extant chapters, it covers a fair amount of the first season, but it has been dead since 2006.

  • Synopsis: Cordelia, realizing she is on the Hellmouth, thinks a few seconds longer before wishing for vengeance, and comes up with A Simple Plan: go back to the day Buffy first arrived in Sunnydale with eighteen months foreknowledge. With that advantage, and her superb people skills, she could easily make Xander suffer as she had suffered while gaining herself a golden reputation into the bargain. She would be feted as the saviour of the world; Xander and Willow reduced to cringing wretches, held in utter contempt by all, even each other. It was just a passing fancy, but she gave it voice, and so sprang an age-old trap...

Could this be a second chance not only for Spike, but for Buffy and the Scooby Gang? Or will entirely new mistakes lead them to a different but equally catastrophic destination? Warning: Story includes sexual activity and the pairings Spike/Buffy, Xander/Anya, Willow/Tara & Riley/Harmony.

So It Is (re)Written by 23Murasaki & Stormysongbird

  • Recommended by: childofketer
  • Status: Complete through the end of S3
  • Synopsis: Buffy saves Jesse and meets Oz in S 1 E 1, and the closest thing to an Everyone Lives AU possible in Buffyverse spirals from there. The first few parts stick close to canon, but things go off the rails pretty quickly after that. It’s interesting to see the same characters show up in different contexts, and even though the authors have pretty obvious favorites almost everyone gets a turn in the spotlight to some extent. Plenty of slashy and femslashy ship tease and a handful of OCs, but actual in-text ships are limited to Giles/Jenny and Buffy/Angel, with Xander/Ampata and Jesse/Marcie in the background. It’s good fun, well-written, and fairly believable.

Wesley's Mulligan by Hotpoint

  • Recommended by: Melinda
  • Status: Seemingly Dead
  • Synopsis: A misplaced time travel spell sends Wesley back in time from season five of Angel to season 3 of the original show, when he was a vastly different person. He uses his knowledge of the past and improved strategy, fighting skills, and ruthless pragmatism to Set Right What Once Went Wrong, both in small ways like stopping some minor villains a little earlier and in big ways like trying to save Fred from Pylea early and keep Faith from ever losing her way. The story ends prematurely with several plot points unresolved, but doesn’t end on a bad Cliffhanger either.
  • The work has its own (currently short) page Wesley's Mulligan.

    • The best way to describe this story without giving away the most interesting twists, is that it manages to take the best possible elements of Peggy Sue stories and Self-Insert stories and makes them even better, with a fair bit of ontological mystery from the reader's point of view. This was written after the Have Faith series, and as well-written as that one is, this story is even better. Especially good if you only know one of the series involved.

The Geekado, by Mariner

  • Recommended by Lady Pedantica
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with The Mikado
  • Synopsis: Season 4 of Buffy, as done by Gilbert & Sullivan.
  • Comments: I'm not sure what else to say besides this is really funny and clever. Plus all of the songs scan, it's a very well-written parody of both its "parents."

    Crossover Shipping Fics

Jaded Golden Threads by Jaded (slash... sort of, it's a Torchwood Crossover and just read the pairings)

  • Recommended by HG 131
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Jack/Ianto/Dawn, hints of Spike/Xander
  • Synopsis: What happens when the Buffyverse and the Whoniverse crossover? This does. Dawn, Jack and Ianto centric and describing the plot would spoil something somehow (the pairing is even a spoiler). Also, the later chapters do a minor amount of crossing over with Bones, Castle, Glee, Charmed.

Defender of the Night by MMcGregor

  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Buffy/Xander, bit of one-sided Cordelia/Xander
  • Synopsis: After dressing as Goliath for Halloween, Xander's stuck as a gargoyle with all the strengths and weaknesses it entails. Covers Season 2 with the epilogue showing a bit of Season 3.

Handle With Care by Jedi Buttercup

  • Recommended by: RazorSmile, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Dormant
  • Crossover with: The Dresden Files
  • Synopsis: Ms. Summers might as well have worn a sign reading 'Danger to Life and Limb' in large, neon print. Fusion-fic.
  • Pairing: Harry/Buffy
  • Comments: A nigh-seamless fusion of The Dresden Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the events of Buffy up to Season Six happened within the metaphysical rules of the Dresdenverse. Buffy joins Team Dresden for the raid on Arctis Tor, Spike and Angel are White Court and Willow ... well. Ships Harry/Buffy.
    • So does the author, pretty damn hard. It's all the fic is about for the first several chapters. And the seams are definitely there.

Pigtails and Tweed by Samarkand

  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: NCIS
  • Synopsis: Abigail Sciuto meets the most fascinating people in clubs...
  • Pairing: Abby/Giles
  • Notes: Has a sequel, Infernal Liaisons (dead).

Buffy's New Job - Part 1: The Avengers by BuffyL, followed by the sequels Part 2: The Winter Soldier, Part 3: Age of Ultron, Part 4: Civil War, Part 5: Infinity War, Part 6: Endgame, and In Between.

  • Recommended by: Mfanforever
  • Status: Parts 1-6 are complete, In Between is dormant
  • Crossover with: Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Synopsis: Buffy is recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. to join the Avengers and becomes Steve Rogers' partner.
  • Pairing: Buffy/Steve
  • Comments: While not exactly the most detailed of stories, the author's vision still shines through. All the characters remain in character, special note to Buffy and Tony, and the stories remain mostly the same, only changed in certain ways to fit Buffyverse into the MCU. Also, the romance between Steve and Buffy never seems forced or unnatural.
