General Fics

King and Country, by Thesseli

  • Recommended by Belphegor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Captain Blackadder needs more than just a cunning plan to get his command back...
  • Era: Blackadder Goes Forth (World War I).
  • Comments: Solid story, very in-character, and fitting the more subdued but cynical humour of series 4.

Blackadder: Serpent of the Seven Seas by bragg247

  • Recommended by Tiggerific
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Join Captain Edmund Blackadder and the crew of the S.S. Flotsam, as they sail the Seven Seas in search of treasure, and maybe even a spare brain for Baldrick.
  • Comments: You'd think this is a lost script for an unaired era. Very in-character and utterly hilarious.

Shipping Fics

Spectacularly Badly Wrong, by Rowen-Redford

  • Recommended by Belphegor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometimes Darling loathes Blackadder. Sometimes he doesn't. An appendix to "General Hospital", in which Blackadder is considerably surprised, Darling is slightly tipsy, and Nurse Mary is not shot. Contains slash.
  • Era: Blackadder Goes Forth (World War I).
  • Pairing: Blackadder/Darling.
  • Comments: This troper usually doesn't read much slash, but this story is a definite must-read. Dialogue and narration alternate between completely deadpan and pants-wettingly hilarious, the characters' inner voices (especially Blackadder's) lose no time pointing out the absurdity of both general and specific situations, and there are sentences like "He wore the glazed, horrified, completely and utterly discombobulated look of someone who had unwarily eaten a spoonful of Baldrick's signature dish, Wasp Surprise." And, surprisingly, a happy ending after a fashion.

  • Status: Complete
  • Tags: Slow Burn
  • Synopsis: All Darling wanted was to survive. When he wakes up in a military hospital in England after going over the top, he's left with the question of what exactly he survived for. Also with the question of how Blackadder got there and why he's such an annoying git. A tale of second chances, insults, cowards, skiving, nurses, a fancy country house, war, paperwork, unexpected heroism and falling in love. And of England.
  • Era: Blackadder Goes Forth (World War I).
  • Pairing: Blackadder/Darling.
  • Reviews: This is a heartfelt fic that feels very true to the characters. Darling still finds Blackadder irritating and annoying. Blackadder still finds entertainment in annoying Darling. Their relationship is built up to in a way that's believable.
