Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing by Chewbot:

  • Recommended by PanicintheStreetsofLondon, Final Survivor, Max300frk, MichaelKatsuro
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A dark and twisted replay of Animal Crossing, complete with screenshots and very creepy illustrations.
  • Comments: Also has a few audio sections available.
  • shurasan: This is a masterpiece of horror, mind fucks and everything else you could possibly think of. Do NOT read this story without the lights on.

Slice of Heaven by Ysavvryl

  • Recommended by Supercomputer276
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: It is said that when good people die, they go to Heaven. But what happens to good animals after they die? And what happens if a human ends up at the wrong afterlife crossing?
  • Comments: Whilst another alternate interpretation of the series, it is in stark contrast to the above in terms of overall tone. A journey after death into the afterlife is complicated when Loki causes a human to instead go into the purgatory for animals, and the adventures she has in her new home.

Animal Crossing Adventures by Master Mr B

  • Recommended by DiurnalBrocolli
  • Status: Dead (last updated July 2017)
  • Synopsis: Roll is just a young girl looking for her purpose in life and also looking for a new family. But she never expected to become the mayor of an entire town! Join Roll in her role as mayor of Animal Town as she learns to deal with her own past and eventually begin to travel from town to town making friends while learning more about the true meaning of family and friendship.
  • Comments: It's a really neat and sometimes powerful story filled with a balance of humor and drama. While there are some parts that are indeed dark, there are also some lightheartness that make up for it. Plus, you would really want to root for Roll, who not just grows with the town, but grows up herself as a result.

The Able Sisters by gingermemequeen

  • Recommended by Adam43
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Daughters of tailors, three sisters — Label, Sable, and Mabel — live in the quiet town of Animal Village. When a tragic accident leaves them orphaned, the sisters must now decide how they want to lead their new lives. Through their encounters with love, heartbreak, and dreams, they come to understand what it is that truly makes up a family.
  • Comments: This fanfiction accurately explains the backstory of the Able Sisters while adding new events not explained in the games, such as Label meeting Gracie after Label loses her job at Harriet's shop. It also takes some things in City Folk, such as, while not explained, Katrina dropping a heavy object on Label. Some familiar villagers from the games such as Hopper are included. Each chapter shows one side while the next one after that shifts to the next side. It's a really good story, even for those familiar with Sable's backstories from the previous games.

MASK by Densle

  • Recommended by josedanielsteller
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Mask Boy and his acquaintances play Animal Crossing: New Horizons. But when Mask Boy's town wants him gone, things take a turn for the worse.
  • Comments: While some other in-universe players, such as Kevin the collector, have their runtime, the main plotline revolves around how Mask Boy's repeated abuse of his island's villagers drives them all to revolt against him, with disastrous consequences. Originally released as a series of shorts before being compiled together.

Paradoxical by CitrusChickadee

  • Recommended by StarHunter
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Lucky and Drago notice something very strange about their human neighbors... An extension of that one "Lazy Villager breaks the fourth wall" conversation from New Horizons. One shot.
  • Comments: Basically exactly what it sounds like: A short and silly but still very fun examination of how strange multiple player characters and fourth-wall-breaking conversations would be from an in-universe perspective.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Star Shirt by GenericDude

  • Recommended by Max300frk
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: On Christmas Eve, a short confrontation between Mabel and Tom Nook causes the latter to fall into a depression over his harsh past in the city. Seeking solace, he goes to a hill top to view the stars, when somebody appears and forces Tom Nook to confront his past, in the vain hope of restoring the vigour and happiness he lost to the city.
  • Pairing(s): Tom Nook/Sable
  • Comments: A very excellent story that focuses on Tom Nook and Sable's pasts as well as the relationship between the two. The story is well written and it is very heartwarming. A very good read for fans of the Tom Nook and Sable pairing.

Sable's Secret by GenericDude

  • Recommended by Max300frk
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Both Tom Nook and Sable have settled into a relationship months after their reconciliation. Everything is going well until a figure from Sable's past returns, threatening to destroy her relationship with Tom Nook for good.
  • Pairing(s): Tom Nook/Sable
  • Comments: A 12 chapter sequel to Star Shirt. This is a very well written story that is worth a read for fans of the Tom Nook and Sable pairing and it really brings out a more emotional side to the characters. The story may contain some swearing and a few uncomfortable themes.

Story Towns

Stories made through in-game towns.

Aika Village

  • Recommended by TokoWH
  • Required game: New Leaf
  • Language: Japanese
  • Synopsis: A young girl who loves her mother gets a doll for her birthday. Things go downhill from there...
  • Town code: 6B00-0026-B459
  • Comments: Quite possibly the most (in)famous story town out there, Aika Village is a must-visit for any Animal Crossing fan. It manages to take a game made of Sweet Dreams Fuel and go completely in the opposite direction, and is chalked full of more interpretations than the WMG page has guesses. If you have the guts, it's worth the visit. Though, it's not recommended to play it late at night...

Aniville

  • Recommended by Gregnes2000
  • Required game: New Leaf
  • Language: English
  • Synopsis: The town of Aniville feels empty for a reason. That reason being that almost everyone living there committed mass suicide. You, a student, must investigate to find out why.
  • Town code: 4800-2398-3734
  • Comments: I honestly find this town extremely unsettling. As mentioned on Animal Crossing's nightmare fuel page, this town feels very Silent Hill-esque. This troper honestly prefers it over Aika Village, mainly because it becomes a lot scarier when you realize something. The town is chockful of graves, but who buried the bodies?
