So many unanswered questions just from the cover alone.
Zelda's Honor is a fanfic dealing with the potential Plot Hole events that could have happened between The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The story picks up about six months after the events of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and depicts how life has changed for Link, Zelda and Malon since the imprisonment of Ganondorf because of Link's knowledge of the future. This one single act of prohibiting Ganondorf of acquiring the Triforce sets the stage for a new villain, Naar, to arise in the south from the country of Nevachrea.

What starts off as a simple invasion of Hyrule turns into a brutal, grim battle for survival which force Link and his friends to retreat to the land of their former enemies to join forces to combat this new, unnatural menace. When they finally unveil the secret behind the Nevachrean's supernatural powers, an even darker threat emerges which seeks to revive an even more ancient, timeless foe. Only with the help of his companions and his own fighting prowess will Link defeat this foe, claim the Master Sword and hopefully use the Triforce to rid Hyrule of these abominations.

The fanfic is very adult-oriented in nature and not just because it has graphic lemon scenes (which can be mighty delectable for those interested in that). It also has extreme scenes of violence, gore and some gut wrenching chapters of torture and/or rape. Seeing past the initial shock of these actual acts of brutality, each extreme action is actually used to further the plot and/or plot devices that come into play later in the story. Although not discussed in depth, the fanfic does give credence to the discussion and thought on the horrors of war and the effect it has on those who experience or participate in it and deals with a lot of mature themes that most young readers may not be comfortable in addressing.

This is Dark Flame Wolf's first fanfic ever written and can be viewed at fanfiction.net, adultfanfiction.org, archiveofourown.org, wattpad.com, and inkitt.com.

Tropes that apply to this fanfic:

  • Accidental Athlete: Link is forced into a deadly game of 'igra na letalnyj isxod.' He then proceeds to trounce every single participant in the game with his skills.
  • Action Girl: Zelda, Malon, Nabooru, Ruto and even Saria get in on the fighting in this story. You should actually count how many females DON'T actually fight.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: During their celebration of retrieving the Goron Ruby back, both Darunia and Link along with hundreds of other Gorons get drunk. This leads to them being completely susceptible to the surprise attack from Thanan and his brood of Defiler demons. If they weren't so plastered, they would have easily been able to handle them.
  • Ascended Extra: Non-player characters in Ocarina of Time such as Malon, Ruto, Nabooru and others get promoted from video game extra to co-protagonists with Link.
  • Attempted Rape: Happens quite a lot with Malon, however she manages to escape said fate 'just in time.'
  • Backstory: Kafei comes onto the scene in Act 2 with a whole lot of baggage that will unfortunately sort itself out to the detriment of Link and his friends.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't try to tell Ruto that you slept with her beloved and are now the bearer of his children.
    • Don't insult the memory of Anju in front of Kafei.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Does the sick relationship between Naar and Ruto count?
    • When Link and Malon copulate in the barn towards the end of Act 2, she asks him to ride her like a horse. He thinks this is quite wicked in practice, but does it anyway due to the heat of the moment.
    • Another example, Naar is quite disturbed at Thanan's specific taste in horses and assumes he wants to have them for his sexual needs. It turns out later in Act 3, that Thanan is a demon with a preference for horse meat and consumes them that way rather than utilizing them sexually.
  • Big Bad: Naar is depicted as this for the majority of the fanfic.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The world is saved and a lot of loose ends tying into The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are covered, but at the cost of Link's life, the death of Nabooru and almost all the Gerudo, loss of limbs for Darunia, Xavier and Giana and the general emotional scarring of war on all characters involved.
  • Black Magic: The magical power of the Twili is considered this by Link in his Fierce Diety form.
  • Brain Bleach: You are going to need a lot of it due to some of the horrific acts of violence, rape or gore described in this fic.
  • Break the Cutie: From Malon to Saria, there is no end to adorable characters getting the shaft in some form or another in this fic.
  • Brick Joke: In Act 1, Link offers a name to Malon and Zelda for naming a horse: Appa. They both laugh at his ridiculous suggestion. Skip ahead to Act 3 and guess what Ganondorf actually named his steed?
  • Brought Down to Normal: Naar and Argonim once the pieces of the Fierce Deity mask were returned.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Remember that mark on Link's butt?, it is part of what denotes his triple heritage and his Nevachrean/Sheikah blood which comes into play later with his ability to summon horses, weapons and anything else plot-relevant in times of need.
    • Also Link's mentioning of the need for balance between Power, Wisdom and Courage in Act 1 prompts Ganondorf to rethink his motives which leads into an almost near win for him in Act 3.
    • Chekhov's Classroom: A variant, when Nabooru shows Link and Saria the mural in the depths of their fortress, Saria goes ahead and foreshadows basically what happens at the end of Act 3.
    • Chekhov's Gunman: Ruto is placed in the unique position to acquire the Zora Sapphire for most of the story but doesn't actually make good on this role until the very end of Act 3.
    • Chekhov M.I.A.: Throughout both Acts 1 and 2, Navi is talked about on a semi-consistent basis with her relationship to Link being explained in detail. Cut forward to the end of Act 2 when Link is dying and guess who swoops in to save the day?
    • Chekhov's Skill: In the first chapter of Act 2, Link manages to upend Malon during training utilizing a rather unorthodox technique while she is still on top of him and has the advantage. Fast-forward to a few chapters later when he is cornered by Ruto in much the same position and guess what he does to regain the advantage?
      • Early in Act 2, it is revealed that Saria can identify heart beats from a distance and gauge where a person or thing is based off the sound. The skill is later used in Act 3 to alert Ganondorf to the impending threat of the newly minted Kokiri assassins.
  • Completed Fic: It ranks in at 94 chapters, three appendices, and is around the range of 550+ pages when viewed in a Word Processing program.
  • Constrained Writing: There are many examples within the story where a character's name is purposefully withheld until the last moment where it will have the greatest impact. One prime example is Chapter 31 where the survival of Ruto from Act 1 is revealed. The reader goes the entire chapter until the very end where her name finally gets dropped.
  • Continuity Creep: The first act and most of the second do not require casual readers to know a lot about Zelda lore and mythos to enjoy the fanfic. However once they reach Act 3 and the ending, the creep has grown so large that some readers might have to bust out the Hyrule Historia to understand all the references.
  • Continuity Nod: The fact Midna is in the story at all is a major nod to those who have played Twilight Princess. The chapter Midna appears in has no real bearing whatsoever on the overall story but it is provided only as a means to explain connections to the subsequent game following The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the child timeline.
  • Continuity Porn: Although casual readers can enjoy the majority of the fanfic, once it starts delving deep into the mythology and lore of the Zeldaverse torwards the end of Act 3, you best be ready to whip out Hyrule Historia and other Wiki info dumps to truly appreciate all the nuances that the plot is trying to wrangle and utilize.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The battle with Barrachas starts off as this until Navi comes in to give Link his 11th-Hour Superpower and the tables are quickly turned on Barrachas.
  • Dark Fic: The story starts off light-hearted for the first few chapters but takes a hard swerve into darkness and despair around chapter 4 and doesn't let up from there.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Many secondary characters such as Malon, Ruto, Darunia and Nabooru as well as OCs like Merin, Xavier and others will get a chapter or two specifically focused on their adventures and contributions to the overall story/plot.
  • Deal with the Devil: Naar and the rest of the Nevachreans who sign up to be soldiers forfeited their mortal lives by accepting a piece of the tainted Fierce Deity mask inside their bodies. They did not know they were just an accumulation of souls to be utilized to revive Demise.
  • Deconstruction Fic: Verbalized by the author, this fanfic originated from Dark Flame Wolf's desire to more firmly cement the link between The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Dark Flame Wolf wanted to explore in detail the potential reasons and ideas why there were so many inconsistencies between both games on the same timeline since there was very little time lapse between the two.
  • Don't Like? Don't Read!: A common response from the author to readers who get squeamish at the dark nature of the fic; despite the fact there is even a warning on the story summary itself of the mature content within as well as a disclaimer at the beginning of the prologue!
  • Downer Ending: With the death of Link, almost all the Gerudo including Nabooru, the death of Impa and the uncertainty of the future, the story does end rather sadly.
  • The Dragon: Talamir, Timner and Thanan is this to Naar for most of Acts 1 and 2. Argonim comes in during Act 3 to replace Talamir and Timner upon their deaths at the end of Act 2.
  • Easy Logistics: With an army that massive, you'd think it would be extremely hard to keep them well supplied and fed. This is hand waved by Naar when he mentions they actually don't need food and sustenance to survive since they'll revive moments later upon death.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When Ganondorf sees what was done to Kiera in Act 1, he takes great pity for the girl and ultimately transfers his protective father tendancies to Saria for most of Act 2.
  • Expansion Pack World: The country of Nevachrea is basically nowhere in the canon landmass for the Zeldaverse, however it is described as being south and southeast of the Lost Woods.
    • The Negev Marshlands and Yolland is described to be just south of Lake Hylia and Hyrule Field past a mountain range.
  • Expy: Kafei is almost a carbon copy of Jet from Avatar: The Last Airbender; right down to his dual hook swords and a posse of young kids who live amongst the trees attacking an enemy that is clearly not the ones they should be fighting against.
  • Fan Disservice: As much as Ruto-x-Link shippers would love to read about Link receiving one hot BJ from the sexy Zoran princess, the way it is presented ends up feeling more like assault and rape. Opinions may vary.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The Nevachreans as a whole; they cannot permanently die except by special means. So death by drowning, starvation, being run through with a sword or even exploding is just a minor setback for them.
    • Verbalized word for word by Francis Gorman in Glaun'rung of the poor souls that comprise part of the Temple of Ballos.
  • Foreseeing My Death: Francis Gorman lightly jokes about how Link and friends will be the death of him in Chapter 51. Skip ahead to Chapter 56 and that's exactly what happens.
  • Gambit Pileup: Kotake and Koume siding with Naar to break the siege on Ganondorf and the Gerudo in exchange for the continuation of their race; Ganondorf siding with Naar to allow Link to finish his quest to acquire all sacred stones so in the end both could come out on top; Ganondorf, Kotake and Koume manipulating Naar to do what they want to leverage time to implement their plans; Kotake and Koume betraying both sides to further the survival of the Gerudo; the demons manipulating Naar and ultimately the entire war to revive their old master, Demise, and plunge the world into darkness, yeah, you could say a lot of villains make plans.
  • Genghis Gambit: Impa believed that siding with the Gerudo would be their best chance of survival during the initial invasion of Hyrule. In the end, she would ultimately be right.
  • Good is Not Nice: Malon in Act 3. Granted, she had perfectly good reasons for becoming violent against Ruto, Koume and Argonim, in that order.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Could be disputed between Ganondorf and/or the presence of Demise looming over the entire plot.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Ruto tends to swap her allegience around quite often in this fic.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Even with the death of Link, Malon continues to live for their daughter and raising her in a way he would have wanted.
  • Heroic BSoD: Link has one towards the middle of Act 2 after having witnessed the death of Kafei and most of his posse along with a good majority of Yolland's citizens.
    • Link has yet another in Act 3 after having his wings violently ripped from his back and being brought back from the brink of death by Ganondorf. He seriously doesn't want to live anymore and wants the pain to stop.
  • The Hero Dies: Link himself dies not once, but twice. The first time, his resurrection comes with a Deus Ex Machina plot device via Navi, however the second time he dies, it is for real.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Deconstructed, Link's death was a result of him going out of control due to the war imbalancing his nature as the hero; Zelda had no choice but to put him down.
    • Played straight with Francis Gorman who rides in to distract Barrachas from Zelda and Link, only to die himself in the process.
  • Little Miss Badass: Saria is fairly timid in the commotion of battle during Acts 1 and 2, but by the end of Act 3, she can hold her own against Josclyn in mid-air while trying to save Giana from almost certain death.
    • Convincing Qargus to help Link and the others and then appearing to save the day on a dragon also counts.
    • Saria also coming in to distract the Hunger demon while Navi revives Link and surviving for quite a while is also another example.
  • MacGuffin: The sacred stones and ultimately the Master Sword lie beneath all the plots and plans that both the heroes and villains make. It isn't until the very end of Act 3 that all plot devices come to fruition.
  • Mad Scientist: Terrance, the wily scientist who lived on Lake Hylia, is the mastermind behind the powerful weapons the Gerudo use in their fight against the Nevachreans. Ultimately blowing himself up and the majority of the Desert Colossus with him just to show the Gerudo how powerless they are.
  • Magical Abortion: Koume and Kotake do this to destroy Malon's unborn son. They try to kill her daughter the same way, but are thankfully interrupted.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Yes, Naar completely overran Hyrule and is now in absolute control of the country but he still doesn't have access to the Triforce, which was his ultimate goal. The fact that its already been split and is unknowingly being held by Link, Zelda and Ganondorf is just another blow against his campaign. He was doomed to failure from the start!
  • Million Mook March: No number is actually given to the amount of Nevachreans that comprise their army, however a lot of vast comparisons are made to get the point across.
  • Mind Rape: Ganondorf can do this with his embedded ruby, albeit he has a far tougher time trying to get into the minds of those who do not possess said rubies.
  • Morality Pet: Saria comes off as this for a lot of characters; she is typically the one who tries to calm tense situations down and seek others to do what's right and just.
  • Murderers Are Rapists: Seems to be the general sweeping concensus of the entire Nevachrean army who act like nothing more than bloodthirsty rapists.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: With his Nevachrean heritage, Link can summon up horses, bows, torches and just about anything else as the plot demands.
  • No Periods, Period: Defied, it is actually utilized as a plot device on how Ganondorf discovers Impa because of the different smell from her monthy flow; this proves her justification for keeping Zelda hidden away during her monthly cycles.
  • Not Quite Dead: A lot of Oh, Crap! moments were experienced by the protagonists when dealing with the undying nature of the Nevachreans.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The battle between Ganondorf/Twinrova and the Talamir/Timner Eldritch Abomination builds up to be quite the epic showdown between three massively overpowered characters. Unfortunately, we cut away to the chase scene between Link and Barrachas; only to cut back later after the battle is over and Ganondorf's boot crushing the last remnants of the abomination.
  • Original Character: There are quite a few that are introduced with many getting a lot of facetime in the story to the point they are just as essential to the plot as the canon characters.
  • Out-Gambitted: All villains eventually fail to the final decisions Impa makes right before her death.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Both Link and Ganondorf become this in the final chapters of Act 3.
  • Plot Bunny: Verbalized by Dark Flame Wolf to be the gaping Plot Hole between The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess; this fanfic arose directly from the idea of what could have happened between those two games.
  • Power Nullifier: Being a Cyn'Taak, Xavier has the inherent ability to resist all forms of magic aimed at her.
  • Precision F-Strike: There isn't a lot of cursing in the fanfic, but when it does rear its ugly head, its actually warranted given the context of the situation the characters find themselves in.
  • Rape as Drama: Several female characters have either had this experience or have come close.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: The fic has a lot of shock value with who gets raped, how badly and if there are any lasting repercussions resulting from it.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Zelda starts off the story with actually accomplishing very little, but by the end of Act 3 makes decisions that ultimately affect the world as they know it.
  • Sex Slave: Ruto to Naar, and apparently they both seem to like it to varying extents.
  • Ship Tease: There is a ton of it between Zelda and Link, but sadly none of it comes to fruition.
  • Shout-Out: Now has its own page.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Although we never know the name of Malon's daughter.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: You could say Ruto has this in spades.
  • The Stoic: Ashley. He doesn't speak and prefers to let his actions dictate his intentions.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: With the triple heritage of Hylian, Nevachrean and Sheikah, Link is well equipped to handle every extreme circumstance. With the Act 2 inclusion of Navi and his wings, he gets even better.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Its arguable if Impa knew that her death was inevitable and set up events and key plot devices to continue on her plan even after death.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Played for laughs in Act 1 between Link and Zelda but serious implications from this arise at the start of Act 2.
    • Played with again in Act 2 when Link, Zelda and Malon are on the road with their Gerudo 'guides.'
  • Time Skip: There is a rather large one of seven years between Acts 1 and 2, but only about a month between Acts 2 and 3.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ruto. With her capture by the Nevachreans and subsequent training in the deadly art of warfare for seven years, she can even get the jump on Link, Malon and Zelda!
  • Training the Peaceful Villagers: Played Straight, Impa trains the villagers of Kakariko village as best she can within the short span of time, but its not enough to stem the tide of the Nevachrean horde.
  • Trojan Prisoner: Link offers himself up to get close to Naar to secure the Zora Sapphire even though the majority of his friends tell him this is a bad idea.
  • Vignette Episode: Dark Flame Wolf added several additional chapters to the story (labeled 'events') that further flesh out secondary side character's stories that fit within the framework of the overall story narrative.
    • Event 1 - This short story deals with Ruto overcoming obstacles and trials in obtaining chairs, a table, wine with glasses to drink out of. All in a attempt to celebrate her supposed marriage anniversary with Link. It is rather heart wrenching.
    • Event 2 - This short story deals with Kafei and his start of darkness. He returns to Kakariko village one last time to find Anju dead and in the process kills his first Nevachrean. The path to revenge begins at the end of this chapter.
    • Event 3 - This short story deals with Ingo Gormon and his journey from Lon Lon Ranch down to Nevachrea and then back to Yolland. It is told with a disjointed timeline starting with a chase, then the bulk of the chapter involving a conversation with his brother and two of our villains. We end on a bittersweet note when he first encounters Orauna.
    • Event 4 - This short story deals with Impa and her chance meeting with Navi during the events between Chapters 15 and 16 in Act 1. This chapter goes to explain why Impa returned back into the Nevachrean camp to save Link and how the rest of the crew gets to the western side of the army when they meet back up in Chapter 18.
    • Event 5 - This short story deals with Naar and his fall from grace. It basically takes place before the entire story and before any other events previously. This chapter goes to describe the almost idealistic life he lived prior to the events that would provide the base reasoning behind the war and catapult the events leading up to it. It also details his fateful meeting with the demon, Barrachas.
  • Walking Spoiler: Every single entry that references Navi in some way is blanked out. Her involvement in the plot and ultimately Link is one of the major twists of the story and ultimately sets up the final events with Link to even occur in Act 3.
  • Weapon of Mass Destruction: Both Majora's Mask and Fierce Deity Mask can be this in the wrong hands.
  • Wham Episode: The story has quite a few littered throughout its chapters. Here are the more notable ones:
    • Chapter 4: Fall of the Kokiri - Quite early in the story, we have the near complete eradication of the Kokiri. Their brutal raping, torture and deaths immediately impact the reader and set the stage for the type of dark fantasy fiction the readers SHOULD be expecting from here on out.
    • Chapter 27: Shutting Out the World - Not only were we recently treated to the horrific death of Saria, but we are then treated to a miraculous rebirth through her fairy, Sora and the growth of her wings. This singular event foreshadows just about every major endgame twist at the end of Act 3. The fact Link and the others bed down with the Gerudo for the next seven years as tenuous allies can be shocking to some too.
    • Chapter 31: Loss of Innocence - A very shocking chapter where a character who was long since left for dead near the middle of Act 1 makes a surprise appearance with their name only being dropped at the end of the chapter (for maximum effect!). The fact Ruto survived the events of Act 1 is a surprise alone, but that she is now the lapdog and fourth general in Naar's army, thus making her an antagonist was something nobody expected.
    • Chapter 56: A Piece of the Goddess - The epic finale of the second act has us witness the supposed death of Link, who then is resurrected by Navi who appears from nowhere at the eleventh hour to save him. What's more surprising is that as a result of this merging, he grows a pair of white wings that he has to deal with for the remainder of the story!
    • Chapter 63: Changing the Pieces - This chapter could be mixed with Chapter 70: Entrenched in the Desert and Chapter 84: It All Went Wrong; however it was this chapter which set up the biggest game changer in the story, the actual death of Talon. Sure, chapter 70 had Malon's son aborted, Koume dying through an arrow to the brain and chapter 84 where Impa dies at the hands of Argonim, but it was here in chapter 63 where the realization that no one is safe was established, so this ends up being the biggest wham chapter of the bunch.
    • Chapter 91: Becoming a God and Chapter 92: The End to All Things - These can be bunched together as the final climax of the story. Characters are killed off left and right, bittersweet endings are concluded, the world is forever scarred and changed. There are so many earth-shattering things happening in these two chapters that wrangle so much from the Zelda mythos that to list even one would spoil the ending.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Link even calls Zelda out on this when she places Majora's Mask on Ganondorf at the end of Act 3.
  • Winged Humanoid: Link becomes this at the end of Act 2 and it later plays a much larger role at the end of Act 3.
    • Saria also gets her own pair of wings at the end of Act 1 which foreshadows the above.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The villains' treatment of the Kokiri is a prime example of this.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Both Ganondorf and Naar act on situations of opportunity if the end result they want to achieve seems likely.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: No matter how hard our heroes try in Act 1, Hyrule will fall to the overwhelming might of the undying Nevachrean horde. Even to the very end of Act 3, it always seems like the villains are always one step ahead of our heroes.
  • You Will Know What to Do: The Happy Masked Salesmen is always assuming this of Link during each of their meetings; Link is naturally frustrated by this lack of direction but then immediately tosses the buck to Zelda in Act 3 with Majora's Mask.
