Watch Dogs: SIN-surrection
is a Fanfic written by KnightSpark. It is a Fusion Fic of Watch_Dogs, Shimoneta and My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, as I Expected with characters from other series thrown in. It can also be found here.
Japan has entered a new age where all forms of vulgarity have been censored and surpressed due to the Law for Public Morals and Healthy Child-Raising. This has been enforced by the Peacemakers, wearable devices that monitor speech and movements for anything inappropriate, as well as the installation of the Central Operating System (also known as CtOS), closely monitoring all civilians to ensure nobody breaks the iron-clad rule.
Hachiman Hikigaya was forced to leave his hometown of Chiba due to an incident that involves his history of a hacker, leading him to be enrolled in Tokioka Academy. On the way there, he encounters the sheet-clad terrorist known as Blue Snow, spewing profanity and distributing pictures of scantily-clad females.
Upon reaching Tokioka, he meets Ayame Kajo, who tells him he has been invited to join the student council as an intern of general affairs. Later on, she reveals her identity as Blue Snow, the terrorist he saw at the subway station. She offers him an opportunity to join SOX, a budding terrorist organization dedicated to tearing down the surpressive rule implimented by the government. Hachiman, who has his own personal gripes with the system, agrees in a heartbeat. Together, the two will break down the system and free Japan from its shackles, one dirty joke and hacked database at a time.
The fic contains examples of:
- Adaptational Badass: Hachiman is a hacker with solid gun skills.
- Adaptation Deviation: With Hachiman as the main protagonist, changes to Shimoneta's canon earlier on have been made.
- Rather than an obscure symbol that resembles a nuclear power logo, Hachiman draws a flower on the track field.
- In dealing with Anna's stalker situation, Hachiman throws smoke bombs at the stalkers, not only saving Anna, but also closing the door on the Accidental Kiss in canon and by extension, anything involving love nectar.
- Related example, Anna resolves to better prepare herself against any and all future terrorist attacks by joining a task force led by Kyosuke Munakata.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Played for Laughs. Hachiman pleas for a way to get away from Hyoka's procreation rambling. Soon enough, Otome locks a collar around him and drags him out of the classroom.
- Big Brother Is Watching You: True to form from two of the source materials, the PMs monitor their wearers for any inappropriate language, gestures or even drawings of suggestive body parts, while CtOS doubles down on it by putting up cameras all over Tokyo. Hachiman found an exploit in the PM found at a Blume data center that allows him to speak explicit language without triggering his PM, while Ayame resorts to a flip phone given by her father that disables hers for three minutes a day.
- Deadpan Snarker: Hachiman has this in spades.
- Gang of Hats: Numerous factions appear in the story, each of them with their own style:
- SOX is a budding terrorist organization, dedicated to rebelling against Law for Public Morals and Healthy Child-Raising.
- Sure Fire is a mercenary outfit that makes their living by smuggling magazines while keeping the Decency Squad at bay with modified Airsoft weapons.
- The Wastrels are a group of punks who spray rather bad graffiti on walls and are a general nuisance to the public.
- Point of Divergence: Hachiman finding an alternative method to save Anna from her stalker prevents the Accidental Kiss moment, which would lead to Anna's sense of morality becoming distorted in canon.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: Hachiman and Ayame, respectively. The former responds to the latter's frequent perverted comments in a dry tone.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Hachiman is not the biggest fan of Izaya Orihara, but keeps him around because he's helped him out on several occasions.
