Fanfic / Watashitachi wa Roger kaizoku desu (we still stand proud)

Go To

The Roger Pirates disappeared after their Captain's death, and were happy enough to let the Marines forget about them. Until the Marines decide to execute their Captain's son, that is.

Watashitachi wa Roger kaizoku desu (we still stand proud) is a One Piece For Want of a Nail Fic, written by stereden in which the Roger Pirates are aware of who Portgas D. Ace is and decide to intervene at Marineford. As a result of them appearing, other matters come out, including the problem of the Roger Pirates virtually abandoning their former cabin boys, the Yonko Red Hair Shanks, and Buggy the Clown.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Accidental Truth: Shanks and Buggy both make a disparaging remark along the lines of the rest of the Roger pirates "spending the last twenty two years drinking and staring at the Rogers's wanted poster", only to later realize that basically is what they did.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Buggy is far more competent than in canon, including using both main varieties of haki, to the point that he kills Akainu.
    • Similarly, Rockstar, who turns out to be Shanks' spy master rather than just a new rookie.
    • Portgas D. Rouge was better known as Blackjack Rouge, one of the most powerful pirate captains of her day.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In canon, Buggy was a pretty despicable pirate, destroying a town for fun and even using his crew as human shields. Here, Buggy worries more about his crew than himself and Orange Town is actually a long abandoned village he uses to test rookie pirates regarding both their strength and their morals. Boodle and Chouchou are actually actors Buggy hires to sell the charade.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Shanks and Buggy are True Companions rather than Buggy hating his former crew mate.
    • There's no indication Buggy ever met Kureha in canon, but here she taught him medicine.
  • Adult Fear:
    • Rouge was in Baterilla and witnessed as toddlers, babies, unborn children and pregnant women were murdered in cold blood. She died not knowing for sure if her son would manage to escape scrutiny.
    • A pair of teenagers stranded in a dangerous sea with countless enemies who want them dead and no way to get help.
    • The Blackjack pirates spent nearly twenty years not knowing the fate of their captain.
    • Buggy and Ace were in a Hellhole Prison. Their loved ones knew for sure that they would be subjected to physical torture and even possible sexual assault.
      • Adds a extra layer of this for Ace and Shanks once informed that Luffy had broken in Impel Down to rescue him since given Luffy's general naivete he might not even recognize a predator.
  • Advertisement:
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Shanks has this thought about the mystery on Luffy's mom wondering who in the world she could be and if she's even alive or not. Considering she managed to grab Dragon's attention and have a kid with him makes him really curious on what kind of a person she exactly was.
  • Arc Words: "Fucking Ds". Thought, if not spoken, by a considerable number of characters due to the shenanigans various Ds in their lives have gotten up to.
  • Arranged Marriage: Played for Laughs in Shanks case. According to him, apparently Big Mom tried to set him up with one of her daughters. Well- keyword: tried as he politely refused only for her to promptly offer Benn the same daughter not a minute later. Unsurprisingly, because of this, they try to avoid her ever since because he finds dealing with her rather exhausting and really doesn't want her getting any ideas about asking Yassop the same thing who would not take that well. As such he can't seem to wait for her to retire and Katakuri take her place.
  • Ascended Extra: Monstar the Monkey. In the series she was just a random animal that partied with the Red Haired Pirates. Here is is an actual crewmember and intelligent enough to read, write and place winning bets. She also is very good at calming and reassuring Buggy.
  • Badass Normal:
    • As per canon, Shanks is the only Yonko who doesn't have a Devil Fruit.
    • None of the former Roger pirates (except Buggy) or the Blackjack pirates have Devil Fruits.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Trying to harm Ace is one for the Blackjack Pirates and Roger Pirates.
    • The Marines acting as though Rouge was merely some civilian rather than a pirate captain enrages her old crew.
    • Attempting to harm Buggy or Shanks is a good way to get killed by the other.
    • Akainu destroying the Moby Dick enrages Rush, the shipwright of the Roger pirates, who declares the ship was a work of art.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Buggy gets a spectacular moment of it when he uses his Devil Fruit to first kick and stab Akainu, followed by shooting him to save Luffy and Ace.
  • Blessed with Suck: Buggy awakened his Observation Haki when he was eight years old and said haki happens to be oversensitive. As a result, he can sense things that none of his comrades can, but Buggy's also so overwhelmed by what he senses (including every person who dies nearby and the aura of those around him) that he at least once tried to drown himself just to get away from it.
  • Blood Brothers: Shanks and Buggy. To the point where Shanks swore a mystical vendetta against Shiki on Buggy's behalf.
  • Blood Oath: Claiming someone's life before Davy Jones involves reciting a specific prayer then writing their name in your blood, placing it into a bottle, and throwing it into the sea. Anyone who's been claimed in such a way will have a black spot appear on their hand that won't fade until their death.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Buggy suffered months of torture on separate occasions at the hands of both Impel Down and Shiki.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Of all imaginable people, Buggy gives one to Akainu.
  • The Dead Have Names: Prior to executing Akainu Buggy reminds him, the Navy and the whole World of the Baterilla Masacre and just how many innocents died there.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • As a result of his more active battlefield presence, Buggy kills Akainu and Kizaru.
    • Shanks and his men kill Blackbeard's entire crew.
  • Death Seeker:
    • Gold D. Roger was this according to Shanks and Buggy even before he gave himself up to the Marines. Apparently, the battles he fought became risker and more dangerous. It soon became clear he wanted to go out in a blaze of glory before his illness claimed his life.
    • Whitebeard turned out to be one as he knew he was slowly dying and before he could become a burden on his crew, he attempted to go out fighting alongside his children to save a son. As Buggy put it, that would have been a perfect way to end his legacy considering he always valued family more then gold but even so he was far from happy about that since it reminded him too much of what his old captain pulled. Buggy went as far to call it 'pulling a Roger' and even went as far to yell at him for putting his crew though that. After he survived that ordeal, Word of God even agreed he'd be making it up to his children for that stunt he tried to pull for the rest of his remaining life.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The other Roger pirates dropped off Shanks and Buggy in the New World after Roger's execution, figuring that Roger's old enemies would go after them rather than the two cabin boys. They also didn't leave the pair any way to contact them in case they needed help, which they desperately did.
  • The Dreaded: A lot of pirates that help save Ace give the reason that they are afraid that Portgas D. Rouge might fight her way out of Davy Jones' Locker to haunt them if they refuse to help.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Shanks is livid that despite being an Emperor and being one of the greatest swordsmen in the world, the Rogers still treat him as if he's still their old cabin boy.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Every actual doctor is outraged by Ivankov's usage of his Devil Fruit, citing that he has one of the Devil Fruits with the most possible medical uses but mostly uses it to give people unwanted sex changes and gender dysphoria. Furthermore, his "miracle cure" is more likely to kill a person than not as he has no medical training and is simply injecting a person with a mass of hormones with no idea of what he's actually doing.
    • Every character with a POV chapter is disgusted by Garp being willing to let his adoptive grandson be executed right in front of him. That Garp later tries to attack Akainu for threatening Luffy's and Ace's lives is regarded as too little too late.
    • Pirates from Roger's era are very strict about following the Pirate Code and knowingly violating it is treated as one of the worst sins.
    • Nobody, not even his fellow crewmates that Shanks is in the process of raging at, is even remotely okay with Crocus apparently slamming his door shut on a near-death Buggy.
  • Family of Choice: A great deal is made about the importance of family, especially those who choose to be family rather than those merely related by blood.
  • For Want of a Nail:
    • When Ace passes through Reverse Mountain Crocus recognizes him as Rogue and Roger's son, leading to him alert the other Roger Pirates that their captain had a previously unknown son. This culminates in their interference during Marineford.
    • Due to Shanks being aware of Buggy being in Impel Down, he sends crewmate Rockstar into the infamous prison in an effort to rescue Buggy, leading to him assisting in the rescue of Ace at Marineford.
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: What everyone feels Dragon is to Luffy.
  • Groin Attack:
    • Lisa Yadomaru, Rouge's former First Mate, nails Garp in the balls with her staff.
    • During his Big Damn Heroes moment, Buggy kicks Akainu in the groin to the approval of all pirates present since it ensures that the Mad Dog will not reproduce at the very least.
    • Going for the balls seems to have been the signature move of Portgas D. Rouge, which explains why she is still The Dreaded even decades after her death.
      • Her crewmate Ballbuster Kuukaku does this with bullets.
    • A miffed Buggy reminds Shanks that his brat, Luffy kicked him in the balls multiple times during the Orange Town Arc.
  • Harmful to Minors: Shanks and Buggy joined the Roger pirates when they were seven, fought in a war at ten, reached Raftel at twelve, and were hunted for years by both pirates and marines starting at fourteen.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Rockstar is actually one of Shanks's most dangerous crew mates and is the crew's spymaster. He merely pretends to be a Boisterous Weakling so no one pays him any real attention.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The Roger pirates never realized how bad things were for Shanks and Buggy so they playfully ribbed the two often, such as calling them lazy for falling asleep during their chores, not realizing both have been kept awake by nightmares regarding the Edd War.
  • Joke and Receive: Over the years, the D's have a earned themselves a bit of a reputation for being uh- utterly crazy with no common sense or self-preservation whatsoever. So, when Buggy first hears of Law's decision to go sightseeing around Marineford during the closest thing the decade has seen to an all-out Pirate/Marine war. His mind immediately compared his actions to the D's. Unbeknownst to him, he doesn't realize exactly how right he really was at the time.
Buggy [Narration]: He what?! The supernova had decided to just... cruise around Marineford during the closest thing this decade has seen to an all-out Pirate/Marine war? To sightsee? What the hell is wrong with this generation? Did they all get their common sense surgically removed at birth or something? That’s D-Level Stupidity, and yes, the capital is necessary!
  • Lame Excuse: The rest of their former crew try to excuse abandoning Shanks and Buggy by insisting "they were grieving" and not at their best. Considering the former cabin boys were also grieving, it earns them exactly zero slack.
  • Late to the Realization: The former Roger pirates don't realize how badly their plan to keep Buggy and Shanks safe went until over twenty years after the fact.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Shanks admits as much as he dislikes Dragon for his treatment of Luffy, the man's strategies speak for himself. Enough so where Shanks considers him to be a bonafide genius while Luffy's considerably... not. As much as he cares about Luffy, he'll be the first to admit advance planning and possessing above-average intelligence is not his strong suit and that's not even getting into how different their personalities are. The one thing he sees them having in common is their shared stubbornness.
  • Mama Bear: Speed, the dinghy that Buggy and Shanks sailed in right after Roger's execution, is extremely protective of "her boys". The only thing keeping her Klabautermann from physically assaulting the Oro Jackson for "abandoning them" is the Klabautermann of Shanks's current ship, the Red Force, holding her back.
  • Memetic Badass: Portgas D. Rouge continues to terrify despite being dead for twenty years.
  • A Million Is a Statistic: Averted. Buggy and Shanks know exactly how many were killed by the marines at Baterilla, partially because they helped dig the graves.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Roger was deeply apologetic towards Buggy and Shanks after the Edd War once he realized what it was like for them.
    • While he doesn't regret it, Buggy is horrified about killing two admirals, meaning that his tiny East Blue crew is going to be hunted by every single Marine in the world.
  • My Greatest Failure: Shanks is horrified to learn that Rouge was still alive when he and Buggy were on Baterilla, thinking that they might've been able to save her.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Roger left his crew two years before turning himself into the marines. None of them got to see him again until his execution.
  • No Social Skills: Rush of the Roger Pirates is really not good at people.
  • Not Quite Dead: Kizaru is fatally injured but still pulls off one last attack on Marco, Ace, and Luffy.
  • Not Worth Killing: Buggy convinces Shanks not to kill Crocus, whom had refused to treat a critically injured Buggy eighteen years prior, by insisting that Crocus wasn't worth becoming a crew-killer.
  • Oddly Common Rarity: In canon, haki is barely understood by anyone in Paradise and unheard of outside the Grand Line. In this series, it's so common that Buggy thinks a pirate crew shouldn't even enter the Grand Line without knowing the basics.
  • Oh, Crap!: The former Roger Pirates get an idea of how bad things were for Buggy and Shanks when the pair mention that the Klabautermann of their dinghy, Speed, manifested within the first year of their sailing her. A Klabautermann is supposed to only appear to a doomed crew.
  • Only Sane Man: Buggy was this while on Roger's crew. He was the only one with the common sense to suggest Roger actually go to a good doctor when he was found out he was seriously sick and that's why Kureha took such a shine to him right away. As Word of God described it- it was like a bunch of Luffy's in one crew while he was the only Usopp.
  • OOC Is Serious Business:
    • Crocus's first inkling the situation is far worse than he expected is when Kureha is genuinely angry at him rather than her usual Troll self.
    • Buggy realizes how bad the last twenty plus years must've been for the Oro Jackson that her Klabautermann doesn't manifest at all despite Speed's Klabautermann insulting her for the last two hours, stating that the Oro Jackson he knew would've been "throwing sails" from the very first insult.
  • Original Character: Due to limited information on the Roger Pirates crew makeup, and the creation of the Blackjack Pirates, the author chose to take characters from other fandoms to fill in those roles.
  • Out, Damned Spot!: Even over twenty years later, Shanks and Buggy still sometimes hallucinate dirt under their nails from all the graves they dug in Baterilla.
  • Papa Wolf: Shanks has made it very clear early on that he no intention whatsoever of letting the Roger pirates anywhere near Luffy in the future. Not after the others neglectfully left them on their own in the New World with Roger's enemies gunning for them. That ship has sailed long ago and he's not above letting threatening them either to get the message across.
  • Peer Less Love Interest: Everyone, even Roger's own crew are convinced that Rouge was far, far too good for Roger.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Rush is exactly five feet tall, positively tiny by New World standards, and still manages to terrify the rest of the Roger's crew.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Roger went to die without saying goodbye to his adoptive sons, causing them massive issues in the process.
    • The rest of the adult Roger Pirates failed to give sufficient information to Shanks and Buggy, leading to the young boys to be trapped in the New World and hunted down by enemies.
    • Luffy was under the impression that after giving him the hat Shanks meant for them not to meet until Luffy was a pirate equal to Shanks. Shanks was very desperate to keep in touch with Luffy but was prevented from doing so by Garp.
  • Prison Rape: Mentioned. Buggy admits his case of exhaustion is partially due to making sure he didn't get raped by the other inmates.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Shanks tries to reign in his anger at the other Roger Pirates for abandoning him and Buggy over twenty years ago during both their initial meeting and their conversation a few days later. When he learns that Crocus refused to treat a nearly dead Buggy after the latter barely escaped Shiki, Shanks' Conqueror's Haki flattens the entire clearing and everyone in it (barring Buggy and Kureha) and Buggy has to forcefully keep him from murdering Crocus.
  • Reality Ensues:
    • Shanks and Buggy are both deeply traumatized from both their time as Roger Pirates and the few years afterwards. Not only were they dragged into a war at ten years old, they were abandoned in the New World by their comrades after Roger died, leaving them to fend for themselves against all the various enemies Roger made. In the end, Buggy has been left deeply paranoid and comes across as cowardly out of a refusal to punch above a certain weight class, while Shanks hasn't been fully sober in twenty years.
    • The above combined with the fact the other former Roger Pirates hid that Roger had a son has left both Shanks and Buggy extremely bitter towards their former crew. Buggy more so than Shanks as he was locked in Impel Down for months without anyone even trying to help him but they all rallied to save Ace, whom most of them had never met.
    • Akainu is powerful, but he's still a Logia and still a Devil Fruit user. This means he's vastly more vulnerable to Haki and seastone bullets, both of which Buggy uses to kill Akainu in under a minute. Likewise, Kizaru's ability to teleport and shoot hyperfast lasers does nothing against a Haki-coated knife shoved through his throat.
    • The one member of the Rogers that Shanks is even remotely polite to is Elena, who lives on a Sky Island. This meant she was Locked Out of the Loop completely compared to the rest of the Rogers who ignored Buggy and Shanks despite being able to keep in contact. That said, Shanks doesn't consider this excuse good enough to exclude her from his anger.
  • Retired Badass: The Roger and Blackjack crews, both of whom were pirating twenty four years prior to the series start at least.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Roger apparently once wiped out an entire army when a couple of their soldiers tried to force themselves on Buggy and Shanks.
  • Selective Obliviousness:
    • The former Roger pirates refuse to acknowledge that Buggy and Shanks have grown up and aren't a pair of cabin boys anymore. On the flip side, they also don't acknowledge just how young the two were back when they were a crew, such as not seeing the problem with bringing a pair of ten year olds into a war.
    • When Shanks meets up with Rayleigh for the first time since the crew disbanded, the latter decides to train the former "until he's ready to stand on his own", rather blatantly ignoring that Shanks was on his own for the last four years.
    • All of the former Roger pirates fail to grasp why Shanks and Buggy don't care that Ace is Roger's son nor why Ace is more invested in being Luffy's brother. The former is partially because the two were never informed Ace was Roger's son until years after they'd already gotten to know the young man. The latter is due to Ace having never met Roger while Luffy is his Family of Choice and people who treat Ace as Luffy's brother consider him his own person rather than "The son of Roger".
  • Serious Business:
    • Claiming someone's life before Davy Jones means dedicating oneself to killing them. Despite how badly Shanks (and others) want Garp dead, they back off when Lisa reveals she's already claimed him. It's noted that a person can only make or receive a single claim at a time. Shanks can't make a new claim until he's killed Shiki, not can anyone else claim Shiki's life.
    • Breaking the pirate code is a huge deal among the old guard, even if one isn't a pirate themselves. Garp burying Rouge on land rather than giving her a proper burial at sea would've been enough to make the Blackjack pirates want him dead if their Acting Captain hadn't already claimed his life.
  • Sex God: Elena of the Rogers declares that Yadomaru of the Blackjacks is one.
  • Sins of the Father: Roger's enemies on both sides of the law were and are very eager to extract their pound of flesh both from Ace, his biological son and from Shanks and Buggy, his adoptive sons.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Shanks and Buggy are both heavily traumatized and admit to being severely codependent. Buggy's a paranoid wreck prone to panic attacks and Shanks has been drinking heavily since he was ten.
  • Shout-Out: Several of the Blackjack and Roger pirates are named after characters from other fandoms, such as Kyoraku, Ukitake, Lisa Yadomaru and Riza.
  • Spanner in the Works: Garp really messed up Shanks plans to be the present and supportive father figure that Luffy desperately needed.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Both Ace and Whitebeard.
    • Tom was actually in Impel Down until Buggy freed him.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Unlike the other Roger pirates, Buggy and Shanks have no problem admitting how badly Roger screwed up at times, especially that he never said goodbye.
  • Super Doc: The only reason Luffy survived Ivankov's so called "miracle cure" is due to Law's devil fruit. Not only does he have a medical degree but he knows exactly how to use it properly much to the relief of the other doctors who are sick and tired of Ivankov's appalling use of his devil fruit. That's actually how he first endears himself to Shanks so quickly after he saved Luffy's life is being a real live competent doctor.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Chapters alternate between the points of view of Shanks, Buggy and Crocus, including how they're perceiving the events of the others chapters, along with new actions.
  • These Are Things Man Was Not Meant to Know: Whatever was at Raftel was at least as traumatizing to Buggy as the Edd War.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The first five years after Roger's death served as one for Shanks and Buggy, who were dropped off in the New World without any way of contacting the others if they were in trouble.
  • True Companions: Buggy and Shanks since their childhoods on the Oro Jackson. They even refer to themselves as "Shanks and Buggy, Buggy and Shanks", sometimes hyphenating it.
  • Unreliable Narrator: All three narrators have their own prejudices coloring things, but Crocus is easily the worst of the three.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Pretty much every Roger's and Blackjack pirate is astonished that Roger managed to convince Rouge that he was worth her time. Lisa Yadomaru goes as far as to bemoan that her captain lost her standards and taste.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Several to go around.
    • Multiple doctors rip into Ivankov for his horrible misuse of his Devil Fruit, declaring that he's breaking pretty much every part of the Hippocratic Oath.
    • Shanks and Buggy take turns tearing the former Roger pirates a new one over their treatment of the two both during and after their time on Roger's crew.
      • First, there's the fact the crew mocked Buggy for being afraid when he was dragged into a war when he was ten.
      • Second, the entire crew abandoned a pair of cabin boys in the New World when half the world wanted revenge on Roger's crew.
      • Third, the crew knew Buggy was in Impel Down for months and did nothing, but all raced to rescue Ace, whom most of them had never met.
      • Fourth, Rayleigh treating Shanks like a child in front of an allied crew severely undermined his authority.
      • Fifth, after Buggy escaped months of torture at Shiki's hands, he barely made it to Crocus's home and begged for help, only for the doctor to slam the door in Buggy's face.
    • Once the rest of the former Roger pirates start realizing just how bad things were for Buggy and Shanks, they rip into Rayleigh, citing that he was first mate, making him the most responsible for the crew's well-being.
    • Shanks and Buggy plan to visit Baltigo in order to ask Dragon what was he thinking when he entrusted baby Luffy to Garp and when he scattered the Strawhats all over the world. Especially for sending Luffy in Amazon Lily, since it was far more likely that Hancock would have killed him rather than falled in love with him.
  • Willfully Weak: Buggy counts as this as he outright refuses to fight people he considered out of his league even after he slowly started to believe he was much stronger then he originally thought. This is all due to being so traumatized from his history with the Roger Pirates and trying to survive the New World with only Shanks at his back while they were only teenagers. He instead stuck to the East Blue and went easy on up and coming pirates developing a Secret Test of Character for them.
  • World Building: Considering this is a One Piece fic, it's quite impressive the author manages to add quite a bit more in a little something called the Pirate Code.
    • First, breaking the pirate code is a huge deal among the older pirates and those who know about it, even if one isn't a pirate themselves. Despite finding it incredibly rude, they do excuse the ignorance of the younger generations due to never properly learning about it.
    • One of them includes a certain "proper" way to invite new crewmates on your ship. Unsurprisingly, that was Luffy's favorite one to learn.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Boa Hancock in the present day. When Buggy and Crocus realize that she is in love with Luffy they think that the boy is one lucky bastard.
    • In the past it seems that Portgas D. Rouge was considered this since pretty much everyone is astonished that she deigned to even look at Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King and holder of the largest bounty in history.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Roger's enemies had no problem trying to kill Shanks and Buggy for being current/former Roger pirates.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Having been targeted and harmed as children and young teens, both Buggy and Shanks ensure to never harm a child.
  • Wrench Whack: Rush, the Roger's shipwright, nails Akainu with a thrown haki infused wrench.
  • You Are Not My Father: So far as Ace is concerned, Whitebeard is his father, not Roger.

How well does it match the trope?
