Fan Fic / Vacation From The Norm

Go To

College life has been, for Kim, a good deal more stressful than she had thought it would be. With an antagonistic professor having made her first semester hell, Kim finds that she needs to take a break to get her head back on straight. It's a good thing that the Ronman has the brilliant idea of traveling around Europe for a month of rest, fun, and relaxation! Those plans quickly become a lot more complicated when a certain green mercenary becomes involved in their lives once again...

Vacation from the Norm and its sequel is an enormous series that goes through the lives of the trio as they try to learn more about themselves, each other, and several plots that they stumble upon as they're on their vacation together.

Currently being revised by the author.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Ronnie
  • Anvilicious: The story gets bogged down by this from time to time.
  • Badass Family: The Upperclassmen are one.
  • Battle Trio: Kim, Ron, and Shego
  • Becoming the Mask: Camille suffers this heavily after her incarceration left her mostly insane and believing she was someone else
  • Better as Friends: Drew and Shego dated briefly prior to the story, but they both felt awkward about it. Ultimately, Shego realized that she felt as though she were dating her uncle. Once they went back to being just friends, they no longer felt awkward.
  • Big Bad: Gemini
      Advertisement:
    • Bigger Bad: Mindbender
  • Big Damn Heroes: A recurring trope, done by nearly every group in the story at some point or another.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Shego at one point tells Kim and Ron that Drew Lipsky (ne Dr. Drakken) finally sought counselling for his various neuroses, and that his doctor is named Ima Kopffall. Apart from the obvious pun about her prominent physical attributes, Shego points out that the German words 'kopf' and 'fall' translate respectively into 'head' and 'case'.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Some subtext that becomes blatant between Gemini and Betty Director, except not really
  • Crack Pairing: A twofer of family fun with Drew Lipsky and Vivian and Edward Lipsky and Yori. Gemini and Dr Director wouldn't count, but it's actually a different crack pairing altogether
    • YMMV whether Joss Possible and Felix Renton or the real Betty Director and Will Du count.
  • Crimefighting with Cash: Having given up being a gentlemanly old-school villain, Senor Senor Sr. is quite happy to finance the Upperclassmen, a new hero team consisting of himself, Senor Senor Jr. and Bonnie.
  • Advertisement:
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shego
  • Deadpan Snarker: Shego, per usual
  • Death by Origin Story: Shego's fiance, Harlan
  • Doorstopper: Both books together are over 450,000 words long. The second book isn't finished, and there's at least one more book planned.
  • Drugs Are Good: Shego and Rufus both use marijuana to help with their health issues
  • Dumbass No More: Ron really stepped up his game after Graduation.
    • Senor Senor Jr. also fits this trope; happily married to Bonnie, he has proven to be more capable as a hero than he ever was as a villain.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Shego like in canon. The fic goes more into detail on how she became disillusioned with her life as a hero. Except not really
  • Foreshadowing: In Chapter 1, after Dean McDermott removed Professor Slocum's tenure for the way he mistreated Kim in his math class he told Kim, "You're not the first hero or student to run into trouble with Mr. Slocum." In Chapter 10, Shego reveals to Kim that Slocum's constantly berating her during her time in his class was one of the factors that led to her Face–Heel Turn.
  • Frame-Up: Against Betty Director, who spends a good chunk of the second book trying to clear her name
  • The Fundamentalist: Hego is waaaaaaay in the right for most of the fic. Later on, he gets help
  • Gambit Pileup: At one point, there are three large groups that are moving against each other and the heroes while another villain works behind them all
  • Heel–Face Turn: Shego, Drew, Eddie, Falsetto Jones, SSS and SSJ...
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Kim insists that she's just "a basic average girl," especially compared to her family of super-geniuses. Both Shego and Yori end up calling her on her depreciation, pointing out that, while her parents, her brothers, Shego, Ron and Yori may each have mastered one or two disciplines, Kim has mastered many. Yori gets fairly angry at Kim, stating that Kim's constantly claiming that her skills are "no big" is in itself a form of arrogance. Given that Kim had just mopped the floor with some former Spetsnaz agents, Yori may have a point.
  • Hidden Depths: Early in the story Bonnie admits to Kim that she always had a passion for restoring classic cars and motorcycles. After his Heel–Face Turn, Senor Senor Sr, indulged her interests, which seems to have contributed to her much friendlier demeanor.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Kim and Ron
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Ed Lipsky and Yori
  • Lawful Stupid: Hego oh so much, until he gets help
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: In an earlier chapter, Kim and Bonnie get into a discussion of their sex lives with Ron and SSJ respectively. After discussing Ron and SSJ's length, girth and duration, the two stop talking suddenly and Bonnie asks, "Why are we comparing our boys' junk?" Kim and Bonnie hastily invoke this trope, almost verbatim.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Professor Slocomb, attempting to defend his position on national TV, gets raked over the coals by a "former sportscaster" named Mr. Altmann.
  • Oktoberfest: A good chunk of the first story takes place during part of Oktoberfest.
  • Polyamory: Kim, Ron and Shego by the end of book 1.
  • Slave to PR: Kim struggles with this from time to time
  • Spanner in the Works: All of Team Possible
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Shego's real name is Shay Gottlieb.
  • Suddenly Sexuality: After breaking off with her boyfriend Jason after high school, Tara is now in a committed relationship with another woman, Alex Eressos.
  • Supreme Chef: Ron. Not surprising considering he's employed as a sous chef at a super fancy restaurant
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Played straight, subverted, and averted in several points in the fic.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Bonnie, having married SSJ before the story started, is much friendlier toward Kim and Ron, and also convinced SSS to abandon villainy.
  • Triang Relations: Type 8 is the goal for Kim, Ron, and Shego. Getting there is a bit of a problem that they're still working on...
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: While they aren't married, Drew Lipsky and Vivian certainly fit the bill.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Professor Slocomb is one, what with his grudge against superheroes that led him to target all heroes that took his classes and try to make them fail in several ways. Just ask Shego
  • Wrench Wench: Yori, as it turns out. It's one of the reasons that Motor Ed fell for her.
    • Bonnie became this after graduation as well. Her codename with the Upperclassmen is 'Mechanic'.
