- Adaptational Badass: Serena has Pokémon abilities. She has also won the eight Sinnoh Gym Badges during the Time Skip.
- Age Lift: Some characters are older than in the anime. Ash and Serena are 15 for reference.
- Came Back Strong: Although Serena doesn’t actually die and is merely prevented from doing so, it also gives her the ability to speak to Pokémon.
- Composite Character: Serena takes cues from her game’s counterpart and from the protagonist of Black and White due to defeating Team Plasma.
- Darker and Edgier: The story does open with the near death of a newborn and stray into darker themes. It's still rather light-hearted and optimistic, though.
