Go To

Titania and Oberon is a Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Fix Fic by arcanemoody.

The story is predicated on the idea of Z-Man and Roxanne having been as thick as thieves since childhood. At some point, they decide to strike out on their own, away from their suffocating families, leading to them becoming the genius music producer and fashion designer that we know. When they cross paths with a certain quartet, the two become determined to help the fledgling band, renamed the Carrie Nations by Z-Man, achieve their dreams.

Tropes:

  • Calling the Old Man Out: Z-Man tells off Casey's father on her behalf, giving him an awesomely contemptuous speech on how much he failed Casey. Z-Man then gets punched in the face for his trouble.
  • Childhood Friends: Z-Man and Roxanne have known each other since they were children and their close friendship has endured well into adulthood.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Roxanne's down-to-earth influence helps a great deal in keeping the overly theatrical Z-Man from pursuing his darkest fantasies.
  • Cry into Chest: After Casey's father tries to confront her at one of the band's concerts (and is diverted by Z-Man), she cries into Roxanne's chest for comfort.
  • Divorce in Reno: Roxanne and Z-Man married and divorced right afterwards in Reno before moving to Los Angeles, mainly to test whether Z-Man is officially recognized as male. It also conveniently gives Roxanne a clear last name, which she lacked in the film.
  • Experimented in College: Casey recounts to Roxanne that one time the band's bus broke down, they all got high and it resulted in Kelly having sex with her out of curiosity.
  • Facial Horror: Roxanne throws her entire drink, glass included, in Lance's face. Her narration notes that he is now a former pretty boy.
  • Family of Choice: Z-Man, Roxanne, Harris and the Carrie Nations end up becoming as close as a family. Z-Man, Roxanne and Casey have certainly been let down by their biological families in various ways.
  • Fix Fic:
    • Z-Man develops a strong support network that dissuades him from the destructive impulses that led to him committing a massacre and then dying in the original film. That support network consists of Roxanne, Harris and the Carrie Nations, with whom he has much stronger bonds than in the film.
    • Roxanne recognizes Lance and Ashley as bad news and convinces Z-Man to ban them from their social circle. This means Kelly and Harris don't become involved with them, which in turn means they don't make certain bad choices and the group is kept tight-knit.
    • Z-Man keeps Harris involved with the band's career as a kind of second-in-command instead of making him irrelevant and leaving him to feel alienated as he did in the film, overall making their relationship much friendlier (and, eventually, romantic). Similarly, Z-Man makes an effort to understand and accept Casey's aloofness towards him, eventually becoming true friends when he stands up to her father.
  • Hates Their Parent: Casey doesn't have a good relationship with her father, as she won't conform to what he expects of her (in essence, to be a model housewife). She outright says she hates him after he tries to corner her at one of the band's concerts.
  • Hermaphrodite: Z-Man's ambiguous gender situation in the film is interpreted here as him having been born with both male and female genitalia. He seems to identify as non-binary, but adopts a male identity in public (during his childhood, his family forced him to conform to a female identity).
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Roxanne and Z-Man promised to have each other's backs when they ran away from home and have stuck together for ages. Tellingly, Roxanne is the only one in on the secret of Z-Man's gender for most of the fic.
  • Put on a Bus: Ashley and Lance, banned from Z-Man's parties at Roxanne's behest. Lance does come back uninvited two chapters later, only to get unceremoniously escorted back out (by way of Roxanne bashing his face in).
  • Switching P.O.V.: Some chapters are told from Roxanne's perspective, and some from Z-Man's.
  • Uninvited to the Party: Lance shows up to one of Z-Man's parties after being effectively banned from them. He tries to pick a fight with Harris, but instead of curb-stomping him as in the film, it's Lance who gets his ass handed to him when the Carrie Nations and Roxanne all jump to Harris' defense.
