Go To

Thrones of the Four Pillars is a Kingdom Hearts fanfic written by Thaeonblade.

Synopsis: One year after the end of Kingdom Hearts II, Sora, Riku and Kairi prepare for the journey that King Mickey's letter spoke of just as events outside of their world catch up to them. Meeting friends new and old, these friends will have to entrench their strengths and learn new ones as the Darkness once more gathers upon the world... All orchestrated by a familiar foe.

So far, the story has only started to pick up steam with the heroes arriving in Twilight Town after a series of events back on the islands.

The story currently has twenty-two chapters and an additional Gaiden Story for the resident OC and his connection to some of the story's characters.

Thrones of the Four Pillars contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Taran, he can even wield a Keyblade.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Both reborn somebodies of Zexion and Marluxia have knowingly and willingly joined Xehanort's side as part of the Thirteen Shrouds of Darkness
  • Apocalypse How: The fate of several worlds including the Ghibli Hills. The inevitable side-effect of Xehanort's plans to rewrite the order of the worlds
  • Back from the Dead: Xehanort. Lea, Relena (Larxene's Nobody), Xion, a lot of people whose Nobodies and Heartlesses were slain.
  • Badass Boast: Aqua to Xehanort in chapter 21 and then reversed soon afterwards
    • Badass Crew
  • Badass Grandpa: Ansem the Wise
  • Bash Brothers: Riku and Sora
  • Barrier Warrior: Ansem the Wise
  • Barrier Maiden: Reportedly twelve individuals with pure souls whose light safeguards the seven princesses who also embody the trope. And now Xehanort wants to twist that light to his own purposes.
  • Battle Couple: Sora and Kairi; Lea and Relena
  • Berserk Button: Taran and Pazu are handily punished when they argue to the point of annoying Riku
    • As a more serious example, Lea is a walking berserk button for Serah
      • As Thaeon found out in an argument driven fight, Sora doesn't like being taunted about his mother.
      • Nor does Thaeon like to be mocked about the unborn child which he lost.
      • The gatekeeper of Xehanort's umbris was deliberately pressing everyone's buttons, especially Aqua's
  • Big Damn Heroes: Quite a few get pulled off every now and then.
    • Of special note is near the end of the Destiny Islands arc, when Donald, Goofy, Balthir, Penelo, Zack, and Serah come to the rescue.
  • Advertisement:
  • Bloodier and Gorier: For starters, the new enemy featured in the story. They bleed when hit and leave behind a body after they die.
  • Broken Bird: Serah.
  • Call-Back: Nearly one per every chapter.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Thaeon shows this trait a lot and later Lea approves of this approach in defense of Serah chastising Gurgi's habit of running away
  • Darker and Edgier: The new enemies and one described way of which they are born.
    • To clarify, one set of enemies can be best described as soulless flesh and blood bodies animated by hearts corrupted by darkness. Which means that they bleed when cut and will usually leave behind a body once vanquished. Sora and Riku even had to take a moment to vomit after their first encounters with one such creature known as Restless.
    • The second set of enemies are ghosts who are also controlled by hearts corrupted by darkness. Worst yet is that some can directly attack a victim's soul to get to their heart. Some of these creatures known as Breathless, are also mostly invisible to the naked eye.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Riku still retains a few powers of darkness while Thaeon specializes in the usage and understanding of darkness.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prominent when Lea and Serah are talking to each other and also seen with Between Sora and Riku, or Riku and several other characters especially Taran.
  • Doomed Homeworld: Pazu eventually breaks down when this fact hits him.
  • Easy Amnesia: Kairi still can't remember much from her childhood. Ansem is piecing together his memory after escaping from the Realm of Darkness and Xion hardly remembered her own name.
    • Namine has somehow been forgotten, in spite of KHII Final Mix's added scenes.
    • Sora also can't remember Roxas or answer any questions relating to the events within Castle Oblivion
  • Evil Plan
  • Fisher King: Each of the four Keyblade Orders safeguarded a key aspect of the cosmos. When Xehanort destroyed the Order of Darkness; Set off the events that made the Order of Light disappear; and unleashed the Heartless invasion... things went from worse to nightmarish before Sora received the Keyblade
  • Heroic BSoD: Sora goes through a short one when he discovers the nature of the new enemy.
    • Now he's in the midst of another one, due to an encounter with Roxas
  • I Shall Taunt You: Xehanort's gatekeeper practically enjoyed rubbing the events of and leading up to Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep into Aqua's face and even accused her of allowing things to get worst after that.
  • Kick the Dog: Xehanort is already too much of a monster for the following to count as an MEH, but destroying the Hills of Ghibli would certainly qualify as this.
  • Knight In Sour Armor: Thaeon.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Chapter 14 gives us this gem:
Lea: "It's like he just pushes a button and instant improbable reaction happens!"
  • Longest Prologue Ever: It has taken ten chapters for the crew to leave the Destiny Islands.
  • Mind Screw: Many of the dreams that the heroes experience.
    • Sora envisions a confrontation with a bitter Roxas, who he doesn't remember.
  • My Greatest Failure: Once Aqua learned about the damage that Xehanort committed, she feels responsible for not stopping him in the events of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
  • Oh, Crap!: Plenty with a special note of when The Mysterious Figure appears on the islands and when Aqua and Thaeon figure out that Xehanort has returned
  • Original Character: Only one so far, Thaeon/Tobias. He also hails from Radiant Garden, was trapped in the Realm of Darkness as long as Aqua or Ansem, and apparently also carries a vendetta against Xehanort.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: A heavy-handed one is given to Sora by Roxas
    • "So how can you even say that your victories against Xehanort were of your own strength? Can you really say that it was your own heart that defeated Ansem the Seeker of Darkness, or was it actually a leftover boast from when your girlfriend was inside you? Did you defeat Ansem? If so, then why did your friend Riku have to overcome him? Everything you've done has been done through the pain and sacrifice of others. How can you dare say that you have any strength of your own?...Your friends are your power, right?...That's naive kid. Your friends aren't your power, they are your shield. The shield upon which all of your pain and sorrow is painted. Sooner or later, the shield wears out and you just go to the next one. Just like you did with your mother...Hell...look at you...Is that Keyblade even formed from the strength of your heart?...Those who dwell within you...If all of them were gone, what would be left?"
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: Gurgi always wisely flees at the first sign of trouble, "Ah Oh! Trouble! Good bye!"
  • She's Back: Ladies and Gentlemen, Master Aqua
  • Spanner in the Works: Xehanort calls out the whole main cast for acting as this in some way, even if some of their actions helped his own plans.
  • Team Mom: Aqua again
  • The Apprentice: Taran to Mickey Mouse
  • The End of the World as We Know It: Essentially the primary intention of Xehanort's plans.
  • The Resenter: Oswald
  • Took a Level in Badass: Zack's somehow gotten a Keyblade between the events of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and this fic.
    • Ansem the Wise. To quote the man himself, "I may not be able to fight, but I can defend!
  • Villain Team-Up: It just wouldn't be Kingdom Hearts without one... or two
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: If Xehanort is back then where is Terra?
    • Oswald's apprentices find him's not pretty
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He was only doing it as a taunt, but Xehanort's remarks to Aqua qualify as this.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Xehanort's specialty above all else.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Xehanort's well-backed claim.
