The Mysterion Mythos is a South Park-based fanfiction series written by Jizena.

The first fanfic, Cthulhu Fhtagn, revolves around the main South Park cast now being sixteen, and still continuing on in their superhero league to keep South Park in order - the Coon League (changed from Coon and Friends because it "sounds fucking gay"). Ike has also found his way into the league, and together they're working on their latest mission; a drug bust involving one of their own classmates. However, as usual for South Park, there's a bit of a twist. Most chapters are told from the point of view of Kenny, though the rest of the cast narrate a few chapters as well.

The second fanfic, Damien's Inferno, takes place four years after the original fanfic, with a whole new set of problems for the cast, which we won't go into as they're all in the context of important plot details in the first fanfic. The story is currently in progress, though updates are a bit slow because the author is taking focus on her Invader Zim fanfiction as of this writing.

It is recommended you have seen the superhero arc episodes before reading these fanfics.

This series provides examples of:

  • Asshole Victim: Out of all the people driven to madness by Butters, the only ones who had it coming are Stephen and Linda Stotch, his parents who’ve been abusing him for years.
  • Back from the Dead: Kenny, as usual. Stan also gets shot dead, but Kenny goes to R'lyeh to bring him home.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Given what the story is about, this happens quite a lot.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Butters.
  • Changed My Mind, Kid: Cartman pulls this after quitting the League.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Used fairly often, considering most of the cast are high school boys. However, it's a bit shocking when even Ike, who is ten years old in this fic, uses it at times.
    • The first story as a whole has over a thousand F-bombs, more then the movie with the most F-bombs in history (Swearnet with 935 F-bombs).
  • Connected All Along: It turns out that Cartman's father was a member of the Cult and Lianne's pregnancy was intended to create the Shadow, but when she missed the final ritual the McCormicks became a last-minute substitute, thus justifying Cartman's control of Cthulhu.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • In one chapter, Stan and Kyle go to visit the grave of Chef, and reference his previous death in the South Park episode "The Return of Chef".
    • In the sequel, Cartman speculates that he remembered Kenny's deaths because of the time he had Kenny's eyes transplanted into himself ("Succubus"); he theorises that he was therefore seeing Kenny die with Kenny's eyes.
  • Curse Escape Clause: Kenny's friends start to remember his deaths after he kills himself to help bring Stan back to life; Stan begins to remember past deaths while following Kenny through R'lyeh and the others also start to remember after witnessing Kenny's resurrection.
  • Dark Secret: When Kenny finally questions his parents about why they attended the cult meeting before his birth, his mother admits that it was because they couldn't afford an abortion and intended to get drunk and force a miscarriage. Also, Karen is, in a sense, Kenny's "twin", as his first death occurred when he was four while his mother was pregnant with Karen (although his parents contacted the Cult to confirm that Karen doesn't share Kenny's immortality despite being born along with him).
  • Does Not Like Guns: Kyle after Stan is shot dead and Kenny shoots himself to go after him and bring him back.
  • Dual Wielding: Craig fights with two swords.
  • Glory Seeker: Kenny tends to use his superhero identity to make him feel like he's doing some good considering how bad his family is, and oftentimes goes into a fog of depression when he fails.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the final battle, Kenny is willing to perform one to defeat Cthulhu, aware that killing the Old Ones would likely sacrifice his own immortality. Fortunately, his sister Karen finds the missing part of a ritual that allows her to ensure that Kenny will survive the battle, albeit at the cost of his immortality, meaning that the next time he dies Kenny will stay dead.
  • It's Personal: Craig's reason for "officially" joining the League. Also part of Cartman's reason for returning.
  • Jerkass Realization: The other boys all feel this way when they start to remember the other times Kenny's been killed and realise how often they've been relatively dismissive about his deaths.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Kenny to an extent. He considers it worth it every time he dies of a sexual cause and has managed to have sex with every female foreign exchange student.
  • Meaningful Rename: After Kenny learns of his destiny to be Cthulhu's Shadow, the Legion rename themselves "the Shadow League" to affirm that they will stand with Kenny and reject his destined role.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Butters when he realizes just how far he's fallen and how many people he's hurt.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Token basically counts as this in the end, using his wealth to give Kenny and Butters in particular a new place to live after they recognise they can't stay with their families any more.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Token decides to get a mask after realizing how obvious his identity is, considering he's the only black kid in South Park. Cartman's Coon disguise is also described as this due to his body type none of the others have.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: By the time Butters comes to regret his descent into villainy, Disarray reveals he has been letting Butters weaken himself by channeling the Necronomicon, fully intending to offer Butters as a sacrifice to Nyarlathotep. In a satisfying double twist of Irony, not only does Disarray end up as Nyarlathotep’s next meal, but the acidic monster blood coursing through Dougie serves as the final blow to finish off Nyarlathotep.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Defied; after the League first witness Kenny's death after learning his secret, they question what happens to his body every time he dies, and then see a living shadow take his corpse away.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Cartman. Also Butters; once the crisis is over, he decides that he cannot put up with his parents' attempts to control him and blame him for everything that goes wrong any more, and moves out to stay with his friends.
  • Secret Identity: All of the superheroes operate with codenames (with the exception of Craig).
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Kenny confronts McElroy- part of the Cult- and learns that he is destined to be the new Shadow of Cthulhu, he immediately rejects that role and affirms that he will be a hero.
  • Split Personality: Butters. He regularly switches forms between his regular self, who is pretty much the same old Butters, Professor Chaos, who is the darker side of Butters, and Marjorine, an outgoing, flirtatious female ego.
  • Super Fic: The fic takes the superhero episodes of South Park and runs with the concept.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Kenny's familiar with how often he dies, and he seems pretty sick of it.
  • Thought They Knew Already: When the group start talking about Kenny's deaths in Chapter 22, Cartman reveals that he's always known about Kenny's deaths and resurrections, and just didn't mention it because he assumed Kenny just liked ranting about it.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Kyle goes into one at the beginning of Chapter 14. "He's dead... He's dead. They killed him. Oh, my God... Oh, my God! You killed Stan, you bastards!"
  • Villainous Breakdown: Butters. He gets better.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Kenny makes it clear that he hates the pain he has to endure because of his immortality. When he finally loses it and becomes mortal, his friends all understand his feelings, even as Kenny notes he'll be more careful for a while until he gets used to his new "vulnerability".
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Butters regularly shows up to school as his female ego wearing pretty dresses and flirting with boys, and everyone seems to accept it just fine, except for Cartman (who is just his usual assholish self).
