The Fanfiction The Madness of Laevateinn was written by Nicolas Crossworth and hosted on fanfiction.net. Published on April 26, 2012 as a Touhou Project story, it is centered on an enigmatic man known simply as "Rook" as he struggles to help Flandre Scarlet fit in with the world once more. Clocking in at over 200 000 words, it is one of the larger Touhou stories out there.
The primary plot is based around Rook trying to recover what remains of Flandre's sanity, but also a subplot of recovering his memories.

The Madness of Laevateinn contains examples of:
- Batman Gambit: Yukari encourages Reimu to perform a Heroic Sacrifice for Gensokyo and promptly waits for Rook to come charging in.
- Berserk Button: Never call Meiling "China". Ever.
- Cast from Hit Points: Rook's "Checkmate" ability does this, and degrades into a Heroic RRoD if he uses it too much.
- Chess Motifs: Amusingly, Rook is often portrayed as a bishop instead of a rook.
- Dissonant Serenity: Yukari violently electrocutes Rook... and simply fans herself throughout.
- Pragmatic Hero: Rook isn't above cheating if he has to.
