Fan Fic / The Keys of the Kingdom

Go To

The Keys of the Kingdom is a fanfic written by NapoleonDeCheese/OverMaster as a pseudo-sequel to Unequally Rational and Emotional.

Picking up from where Unequally Rational and Emotional left off, Negi and Ala Alba (and Evangeline A. K. McDowell) find themselves spirited away from Mahora after a training session at Evangeline's cottage. They then encounter the Heartless, shadowy creatures from another realm. After fending them off, the group finds themselves stranded in a place called Traverse Town. There, they meet Cid Highwind and Aerith Gainsborough.

Meanwhile, Mahora is invaded by the Heartless, led by Sextum Averruncus. As the various magically empowered residents of the school seek to fend off the invading creatures, Inugami Kotaro and Deadpool find themselves defending Miyazaki Nodoka and Ayase Yue from Sextum herself, only to be rescued by Mickey Mouse, the king of the Timeless Lands, who has come to Mahora seeking the aid of the Thousand Master, Nagi Springfield. However, even the might of the keyblade proves insufficient against Sextum. They are then joined by Tohsaka Rin and Vigilante, before the group is forced to flee to another world.

Meanwhile, Lala Satalin Deviluke, Yuuki Rito, and Mikado Ryoko set out to investigate a strange vehicle that was seen arriving from the sky in the woods outside Mahora. There, they find Narutaki Fuuka and Narutaki Fumika inside what appears to be a space ship, before accidentally blasting themselves into space.

MEANWHILE, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Pluto, and Tuxedo Kamen encounter a girl from the future while fending off the Heartless at Mahora. She warns them that the future has become unstable, before turning into a different person claiming to be Sailor Mars. Only to then stab herself in the throat, warping them back in time.

Like its predecessor, The Keys of the Kingdom is a Massive Multiplayer Crossover of Negima and, well, everything else the author can think of. Unlike its predecessor, however, The Keys of the Kingdom both crosses over with and draws numerous cues from Kingdom Hearts.

Should not be confused with Keys to the Kingdom.

This fic contains examples of the following:

  • A-Cup Angst: Makie
  • Adaptational Heroism/Adaptational Villainy: one of the many side effects of Chao Lingshen's multiple jumps through time, turning an at worst decent and dutiful god like Hades into a fire-using, nigh demonic used-car salesman type, Loki from the young and genderfluid God/dess of Stories back into the early-era God of Evil, and Maleficent from a green-skinned evil fairy into a neutral Angelina Jolie look-alike with a Keyblade and a romantic relationship with Sleeping Beauty.
  • Aerith and Bob: Due to the sheer number of series being crossed over with, there is a very large variety of names.
  • Affably Evil: Sextum
  • After-Action Healing Drama: After the fight with the Mad Hatter, it is discovered that a wound Negi took from a Heartless is turning him into a Heartless.
  • Angst: When Asuna finally summons her sword, she bemoans the fact that she summoned it to save Negi.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Deliberately invoked by Sailor Venus in an attempt to keep morale up during the Heartless' invasion of Mahora.
  • The Anticipator: Sailor Pluto predicts Negi's attempt at a Sneaky Departure.
  • Awful Truth: Shortly after the main characters leave Earth, the Heartless destroy it. None of them know this but Poyo and Shiori.
  • Black Mail: How Gosalyn convinces Mickey to take her along.
  • Blatant Lies: To get the Queen of Hearts to allow them to take Jervis Tetch with them, Skuld offers to behead him for the Queen. Twice.
    • To keep Zues from questioning Shiori's presence, Poyo tells him they're in a relationship.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Setsuna on Konoka
  • Boxed Crook: Deadpool and Kotaro are to be pardoned if they can ensure Konoka's safety.
  • Butt-Monkey: Chamo
  • Casual Danger Dialogue
  • Chekhov's Gag: When the group first encounters Drake Mallard, Deadpool, who is disguised as a dog, lifts his leg while standing next to his mailbox. Two chapters later, Drake Mallard is charged a property fine for having a urine covered mailbox.
  • Chick Magnet: Negi Springfield
  • Civilized Animal: Chamo
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: The Gummi Ships are powered by Happy Thoughts. This is terrible.
  • Class Representative: Yukihiro Ayaka
  • Closed Circle: Mickey implies that the Door to Saint Canard was this.
  • Composite Character: Zues is a composite of himself from Greek legends and Disney's take on him.
    • The same with Hades, although his Disney side is more prominent. And he hates it.
  • Conspicuous CG: Shiori initially thinks the flames on Hades's head are this. Yes, this is every bit as illogical of a conclusion to reach in-setting as it sounds.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Skuld convinces the Queen of Hearts to release her friends by promising to subject them to the second most horrible punishment she knows of: the Saotome Haruna!
  • Crossover Couple: Haruna/Rito
  • Culture Clash: Alice finds kissing someone without being engaged to them horrifically scandalizing.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Poyo's is brought up in fic.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Tuxedo Kamen
  • Death by Adaptation: Apparently, Tifa was killed by Sephiroth instead of Aerith.
  • Divine Parentage: Skuld makes several references to her father.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Sextum offers Kotaro and Deadpool the chance to join her side. Upon having her offer rejected, she attempts to kill them.
    • After she allows them to escape in a failed bid to have them lead her to Negi Springfield, she does it again, this time to try to gain information.
  • Doomed Hometown: On a planet-wide scale. And most of the characters are unaware of it, having been whisked away before it fell.
  • Double Entendre: Kirie starts using a lot of them shortly after meeting Negi, all of which go over his head.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come
    • In the prologue, Negi dreams of being attacked by the Heartless. Guess what happens in chapter 1.
    • Gosalyn dreams of Ariadne's magic academy. Except she's in the past, before the events she dreams of happened.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Yue, again. Fortunately, she doesn't die this time either.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Gadget
  • Embarrassing Nickname: What Chisame thinks "Goofy" is.
  • Emotion Suppression: All Nobodies lose their ability to feel emotions along with their hearts.
  • Empathic Environment: Because it's based on Fantasia, the land where Yen Sid's tower is located, Symphony of Sorcery, is a very sensitive version of this. Specifically, it reacted to the Narutaki twins having sex non-stop, making the entire land ring with porno-music and twinkly effects.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Chamo misquotes it after Negi steps on him.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Hades wasn't always the Disney portrayal of himself, but Chao Lingshen's constant time traveling has warped reality. And he hates it.
  • Evil Is One Big, Happy Family: While not entirely universal, there seem to be quite a few villains jumping at the chance to join the organization that destroyed or is planning to destroy their world.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Organization XIII consists of those who fell to the darkness and became Nobodies. This includes Takamichi, Shirou, and Sakura.
  • Faster-Than-Light Travel: Gummi Ships are capable of this.
  • Finger-Tenting: Chisame does this while interrogating Sailor Mercury.
  • Fish out of Water: Alice
  • Flat Joy: Yen Sid
    "This is my happy face."
  • Forgettable Character: Chamo. He uses it to his advantage.
    • Pluto. The dog, not Sailor Pluto.
    • Ai. To such an extent she's afraid she might stop existing.
  • Freudian Threat: How Tetch interprets Skuld's offer to behead him twice.
  • Funny Animal - Several
    • Mickey Mouse
    • Gadget
    • Vigilante / Darkwing Duck
    • The citizens of Saint Canard.
    • Several of the Wonderlanders.
  • Ghost Town: Traverse Town is almost completely abandoned, and is falling apart.
  • God Guise: Skuld pulls this off. Subverted in that she is actually a deity, just not nearly as omnipotent as she implies she is to the Wonderlanders.
  • Hanging Judge: The Queen of Hearts
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kotaro and Deadpool. Well, they're being pardoned and paid to be good guys, anyways.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Kotaro attempted to pull one to save Nodoka and Yue, only to be rescued by Konoemon.
  • Honor Before Reason: Sextum invites Kotaro and Deadpool to join her side since she had worked with them before and would prefer not to have to kill them. Kotaro instantly shoots the offer down, even though he knows that Sextum is capable of casually killing him, since he disagrees with the more extreme methods Sextum is utilizing this time around. As Sextum prepares to kill him, Deadpool, Nodoka, and Yue, Kotaro considers that he probably could have talked her into sparing a lot more people than she would have otherwise, and could have at least saved Nodoka and Yue if he had pretended to join Cosmo Entelechea.
    • Deadpool, on the other hand, refuses because the good guys are paying him, and a history of getting paid only to back out on deals is bad for business as a mercenary. Still counts, since he fully expects Sextum to kill him.
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: Tetch tries to pull this. It goes badly for him.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Poyo squeezes Zues (who has taken the form of a bird) when he insults Hild, even though she agrees with his assessment.
  • Insane Troll Logic: The residents of Wonderland are especially fond of this.
  • Interrogation Montage
  • Intimate Healing: When Negi begins to turn into a Heartless, Alice is talked into making a pactio with him to purify him before he changes.
  • Ironic Nickname: What Gadget thinks "Baka Pink" is.
  • Jigsaw Puzzle Plot: A lot is going on at once. And the story jumps back and forth between everyone.
  • Kangaroo Court
  • Lampshade Hanging: Deadpool does this a lot.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Kirie
    • Due to all the weird things she has experienced lately, both in Wonderland and since leaving, Alice is gradually becoming one.
"Oh, a toy man with wings is talking now. Of course it would be."
  • Loads and Loads of Characters
  • Lonely at the Top: Almost immediately after regaining her powers, Evangeline sends away everyone she cares about. It's implied that this was for their safety.
  • Magic Kiss: Pactio in general.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: Mahou Sensei Negima!, Kingdom Hearts, Batman, Deadpool, Sailor Moon, Final Fantasy VII, Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Darkwing Duck, Fate/stay night, To Love-Ru, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Toy Story, Neon Genesis Evangelion, UQ Holder!, The World God Only Knows, Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, Ah! My Goddess, etc. The list goes on and on.
  • No OSHA Compliance: The Gummi Ships are powered by happy thoughts. As in, get too excited while inside one, and you'll find yourself blasting off into space. And once you panic over being lost in space, they stop working and you'll crash.
  • Not So Different: Poyo mentions that Zeus and Hades are similar after Zeus greets her almost word for word the same way Hades did earlier.
  • One Steve Limit: Subverted. Several characters have the same name. Turned into a running gag with Pluto and Sailor Pluto.
  • Only Sane Man: Aerith, after spending some time with Ala Alba.
  • Out of Focus: After several chapters without any lines and barely any mention, Ai gropes Aerith.
"I just wanted some screentime! Sorry for being desperate enough as to resort to such shameless and blatant fan pandering tactics for a mention! But, but I'm afraid I'll stop existing if I spend too long without being mentioned by the narration! It happened to my classmate Usui-kun, you know!"
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Rin sees right through Drake's and immediately pegs him as Vigilante/Darkwing Duck.
    • Of course, nobody who isn't already in the know sees through Deadpool's. Even when he's wearing his fake head on backwards.
  • Past-Life Memories: Yue has deja vu about her time at Ariadne.
  • Percussive Prevention: Yuuna shoots Chachamaru with an anti-magic bullet to turn her off so she, Negi, Kirie, Gadget, and Chamo can sneak off. Except Chachamaru reveals that this only temporarily paralyzes her just after they leave, and that she is fully aware of what happened.
  • Petite Pride: Nodoka lampshades it.
  • Pluto Is Expendable: Sailor Pluto is occasionally the butt of this.
  • Recognizable by Sound: Rin points out that Drake Mallard doesn't change his voice while he's Darkwing Duck, and that they sound exactly the same. Drake starts talking in a higher pitched voice.
  • Ret Gone: Two in quick succession. First, Chibi-Usa shows up in the past and refers Tuxedo Kamen as "Mamo-chan." Sailor Venus, who at this point didn't know Tuxedo Kamen was Mamoru, repeats "Mamo-chan?", at which point Chibi-Usa is suddenly replaced by a different girl. This new girl warns them that they have to protect Chao Lingshen. Sailor Mercury asks what Chao has to do with this, at which point the new girl is replaced by another Kirie.
    • And just to hammer it in, Kirie later insists that nobody else was sent back, just her.
  • Ripple Effect-Proof Memory: Kirie remembers being Sailor Mars, even after the timeline changes so that she never was Sailor Mars to begin with.
  • Running Gag: Namism, or discrimination against names. It's apparently considered to be right down there with racism, sexism, and Twilight.
  • Sanity Slippage: Several characters show signs of this.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Konoemon attacks Sextum so that Nodoka and Yue (and Kotaro and Deadpool) can escape. Except she quickly defeats him and tracks them back down immediately afterward.
  • Size Shifter: Alice's pactio artifact.
  • Skinship Grope: Haruna. And surprisingly, Ai.
  • Skyward Scream: UQ HOLDER!
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: After getting shot down by Fate, Nanoha wakes up to find the world has fallen to darkness.
  • Spoof Aesop: At the end of the Wonderland arc, the Queen of Heart comes away with the Aesop that it's better to execute people by hanging than decapitation.
  • Take That!: At Twilight and UQ Holder!.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: A villainous example comes in the form of Quackerjack.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Borderline example. Due to the Heartless being numerous in number, but relatively weak and vulnerable to magic, Tuxedo Kamen finds himself far more useful than usual.
  • Time Stands Still: Stopga
  • Time Travel: Chibi-Usa jumps into the past, only to abruptly change into someone else due to how unstable the timeline has become.
    • Mickey opens a door to the past to escape Sextum, and ends up stranding himself, Nodoka, Yue, Kotaro, Deadpool, and Rin in Saint Canard.
  • Translate the Loanwords, Too: After Asuna is implanted with a device that automatically translates her speech to English, she responds to Skuld's suggestion that Alice may be a princess with "male cow."
  • Trapped in Another World: Happens to four separate groups of characters.
  • Values Dissonance: Chamo runs headlong into this when he attempts to talk Alice into a pactio.
  • Villain Team-Up: Loki, Hades, Precea, The Joker, and Cosmo Entelechea are all working together.
  • We Will Not Use Stage Makeup In The Future: Nodoka disguises everyone using a Clow Card, the Create. Except Deadpool, who sews together an unconvincing dog mask and calls himself Paul J. Dogpool.
  • What Is Going On?: Tuxedo Kamen. He is ignored.
"I love it when you girls start talking about these things around me as if I was supposed to have any idea what you mean at all."
    • Followed shortly by Minako. Tuxedo Kamen then lampshades it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Basically the reaction when Mickey apparently kills Vigilante to portal them all away from Sextum. Deadpool accuses him of being Ultimate Mickey because of it.
  • The World as Myth: Discussed by Negi and Skuld after they encounter Alice. In Wonderland.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: The Heartless are capable of inflicting wounds that do this. Those ruled by their darker emotions will eventually be transformed into Heartless.
  • Wrong Turn at Albuquerque: Deadpool references it by name.
