Fanfic / Senju Of Wave

Go To

The Senju of Wave series is comprised of two stories: Senju Naruto and Senju Returned. Written by TheBeardedOne, it follows the life of a young Uzumaki Naruto and the effects of his apparent death just after the Kyuubi Attack.

The stories are mirrored here and here respectively.

The story contains the following Tropes:

  • Action Girl: While Hinata shines, Tsunade is the strongest by far.
  • Adaptational Badass: Hinata, due to the intercepted kidnapping attempt on her, grows up to be one under Tsunade's guidance.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Both Hiashi Hyuuga and Fugaku Uchiha are this when they show up at the Genin exams to support their children... by sitting in reclining chairs with food and drinks, and waving small flags with their clan crests. The reactions of Hinata and Sasuke are priceless:
Sasuke: Tou-san... what are you doing? Is this how you show the Uchiha pride you keep going on about?
  • Balance of Power: Hiashi's proposal to arrange a bethrotal between Naruto and Hinata means that the Hyuuga Clan gets a formal alliance with the Senju and a close relationship with the heir of the Yondaime Hokage and the Jinchuuriki of the Nine Tails; to counterbalance this, Jiraiya suggests to groom Itachi Uchiha as the Godaime Hokage, so that the Uchiha Clan doesn't lose out.
  • Badass Crew: Team 7. Led by former Hokage Sarutobi Hiruzen, it consists of Senju Ruto (also known as Uzumaki Naruto), Hyuuga Hinata and Uchiha Sasuke.
  • Badass Family: The Senju of Wave. You have Tsunade, her adopted sons Kakashi, Kimimaro and Naruto, plus Tsunade's adoptive niece Shizune.
  • Cool Mask: All Senju males in Wave wear one, mainly as a way to hide Naruto's whisker marks.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Sasuke versus Temari. Temari loses within seconds due to a genjutsu and knockout senbon combo.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Temari shows this in her first attempt at promotion, relying too much on long-distance attacks. She trains to be an all-range combatant afterwards.
    • Defied by the Hyuuga Clan, as they eventually acknowledge that their Gentle Fist style puts them at a disadvantage against ranged fighters, and develop a ranged version; even more so by Hinata, who learns to use a naginata.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Hyuuga Hiashi and Uchiha Fugaku whenever they are in range of each other, but other characters shine on occasion.
  • Disability Superpower: Rock Lee's inability to use Jutsu does not hold him back in the slightest, but it is noted that in a smaller village, he would have been prevented from trying due to resource allocation issues.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Inuzuka Tsume discovers Naruto's true identity and concludes that it was a plan by the Hokage to safeguard him. Tsunade does not disagree.
    • After discovering that several of the Shinobi who attacked Konoha were effectively puppets, Konoha's top spies deduce that Sasori is a member of the Akatsuki and that he is in charge.
  • Faking the Dead: Danzo plots this (complete with corpse) as his plan to seize the power of the Kyuubi for himself. Kakashi interferes and saves Naruto, but carries out part of the plan himself.
  • For Want Of A Nail: With Konoha not having its own Jinchuuriki and Danzo's treason exposed, the village is forced to push its remaining forces harder.
    • Gato learns that Tsunade has settled in Wave, so makes his hostile takeover bid earlier.
    • Tsunade gets over her blood phobia earlier than she did in canon.
    • With Itachi being chosen to become the next Hokage, the Uchiha Coup is abandoned. Why try to seize power when you get it any way?
      • Before that, Fugaku is chosen to become one of Sarutobi's advisors alongside Hyuuga Hiashi, to keep one clan from thinking the other is accruing more power.
    • With the Coup abandoned, the Uchiha massacre never happens, thus Sasuke is left a far more well-adjusted, friendlier person than canon.
  • Friendly Enemy: Hyuuga Hiashi and Uchiha Fugaku both agree that they have a deep-seated yet polite dislike for each other. This in no way prevents them from working together for the good of the village. They argue about almost everything, including whether Hyuuga Stubbornness is greater than Uchiha Pride. They have been described as "Frienemies", which is described as basically being "Friends who Refuse to Admit it".
  • Friendly Rivalry: Once they get into the same team, a more assertive Hinata and a more laid-back Sasuke begin to trade well-meaning jokes and barbs about their respective clans.
  • Happily Adopted: Kimimaro and Naruto consider themselves Senju first, their birth-clans second. Kakashi, being older, is happy as a Senju, but when the chance arises, he reclaims his own clan-name.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming:
    • The series as a whole: "Senju [Word]": Senju Naruto, Senju Returned.
    • Senju Naruto's 21 chapter titles are all One-Word Title: "Fugitive", "Repercussions", "Travelling", "Arrival", "Settling", "Ice", etc.
    • Senju Returned's 19 chapter titles are all One-Word Title except for 14, Alliterative Title "Discussions and Decisions": "Prologue", "Test", "Team", "Mission", "Journey", "Palace", etc.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Kimimaro and Haku both have this, the latter using his abilities to create a sword of ice that is stronger than steel.
  • Magic Eye: Much of the Uchiha Clan count and Sasuke demonstrates his ability to cast illusions via eye contact in his first Chunin Exam.
    • A later match causes Sasuke to awaken the Rinnegan!
  • Min-Maxing: Suien becomes a Jonin despite only having Suiton techniques because he can do so much with it.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Itachi delivers one to Gato after dispatching his bodyguards.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Danzo gets killed for apparently killing the Kyuubi jinchuuriki and thus the Kyuubi itself.
  • Ship Tease: Itachi and Hana Inuzuka.
  • Stunned Silence: Asuma suffers this after Hinata manages to hit him with a perfectly-timed joke, much to Hiruzen's amusement.
  • War Arc: Iwa briefly goes expansionist and tries to capture Takigakure for their Hero Water, forcing Konoha to mobilize against them.
