Fanfic / Queens of Mewni

Go To

A series of stories by Jgss0109s set in an Alternate Universe for Star vs. the Forces of Evil. This chronicles the Queens of Mewni (both canon and OCs) lives and times as the queens.

Please note that since the AU was started long before Season 3, certain plot points and revelations in canon do not apply.

Could once be found here before the story was made a Dead Fic after Jon deactivated his account in order to focus on his family and other projects, although that has come into doubt after a fan exposed him as a groomer and sexual predator in February 2024.

An archive of the biographies can be found here, while other Queens works are attempting to be preserved by some of their fans, such as here and here. The author has also given permission for the Queens of Mewni Spinoffs to continue.

Queens of Mewni provides examples of:

  • Abdicate the Throne: Expected of the queen when their heir apparent marries, which is why it was notable that Celena waited ten years after Diana's marriage to do so, and why a queen assuming the throne on the death of her predecessor is a rarity.
  • Adapted Out: Estrella the Drafted and Lyric Butterfly do not appear at all in Queens, nor does the canon design for Dirrhennia the Heaped, Rhina the Riddled is reduced to a cameo in Galaxia's biography, and Jushtin the Uncalculated becomes nothing more than Sideria's male disguise.
  • All for Nothing: Everthing that happens in Aurora's part hinges on one fact: Star's plan to destroy magic failed. Somehow, it came back.
  • Amazon Brigade:
    • Girls of the chivalric House Loveberry can cast basic magic, allowing them to be a force to be reckon with in battle.
    • Luna's ladies-in-waiting not only were chosen to keep her company, but also to keep her safe.
  • Anyone Can Die: The Queen's biographies not only say about their eventual deaths but mentions many of their friends or family member's deaths. Also, the War of The Worlds, which was caused by Star and Marco cleaving the worlds together in the finale caused a lot of casualties some of which included are the original show's supporting/minor cast.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: The Ninth Sense, according to Helia, would allow someone to become Magic itself, and therefore become part of the Universe. Or even a deity as well. It's heavily implied that Helia herself went through this process, but had to renounce her mortal shell to do so.
  • Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: The females of the Mewman species all go through mewberty and grow wings and are capable of learning magic, unlike in canon where it's only the heirs.
  • Bread and Circuses: "Tales of a Butterfly Queen - Febe" reveals this was Crescenta's way of thinking regarding commoners; they don't care about the politics or social games nobles engage in as long as they have health, leisure and a good harvest. This gives to Febe the idea of creating the Harvest Festival in order to soothe any hard feelings they might have over their queen fraternizing with the Lucitors, the owners of the beasts that killed innocents and destroyed property.
  • Boring, but Practical: The reason the wand is a wand was because Urania needed a way to wield its crystal core without cutting or burning herself. So she took a large weaving needle and some thread and tied it to it.
  • Brainless Beauty: Downplayed. Men from House Redbird are mostly depicted as being suave and handsome, if a little doofus (Falcon egging at Urania, Hawk's infidelity, etc.)
  • Burning the Flag: A significant trope in Vesper's tapestry, as she burns away flags representing the queens of the Dark Age, symbolizing how she was the one to bring Mewni into the Renaissance.
  • Cain and Abel:
    • At first Hemera the Builder and her sister Nixie got along... and then Hemera fell for her eventual husband Roman Fields... who Nixie liked.
    • Averted with Crescenta and Dirhhennia, who actually got along here.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The Locker Spell, a spell meant to guard secrets created by Helia the Light of Power, that was revealed at supplementary art. Luna the Child used it to completely hide out that Eclipsa is her mother, effectively altering history.
    • The Bloomoon tea, Venus' favorite kind only mentioned in her biography. Turns out the tea has contraceptive and abortive properties that, after all her years of consuming it, caused infertility issues for herself and her descendants until Vesper looked out a remedy.
  • The Commandments: Etheria the Knight created a set of ten Rules every princess has striven to comply to, with variable degrees of success, but no princess after Etheria herself has been able to abide to the Code in its entirely. (Aurora, so far, is doing well.)
    1. Will learn Magic.
    2. Will not violate the Laws of Magic, Nature and the Universe.
    3. Will learn the art of war.
    4. Will be instructed in the Sacred teachings.
    5. Will learn the art of music: vocal or instrumental.
    7. Will be literate in High and Low Mewnian languages.
    8. Will always remember that you are still a subject to the Queen.
    9. Will learn the etiquette and good behavior.
    10. Will not show affection to your suitor in public.
  • Coming of Age: It's explained that Urania found the wand at the age of 14, so it became tradition that the next heir recieves it on their 14th birthday.
  • Compete for the Maiden's Hand: Vesper's biography reveals that the Silver Bell Ball, a ball to foment co-existence and peace between kingdoms, was originated because princes planned a tournament on their own volition for Vesper's hand, despite she made clear she would chose her own groom and she already got married to Caspian by the time the tournament began. The ball was a way to sent them home without any hard feelings.
  • Content Warnings: Glossaryck put one in front of Venus's biography at Star's command to protect "the supposed innocence that [Star and Marco] believe [Aurora] still has" and notes that some of the worst things Venus did was censored. Word of God says if Marco had his way Venus's chapter would have been excised altogether.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Day Queens (with the (possible) exception of Helia) tend to never reach their 50's and die in horrible circunstances.
  • Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: Word of God says that Crescenta finally got Hawk to stop sleeping around on her by telling him on no uncertain turns that if she catches him again, she'll have him castrated, forced to watch as she has sex with her cousin Acorn before finally having him executed in the most painful fashion she can think of. He immeditely became faithful.
  • Darker and Edgier: The AU can be best described as Star Vs. meets Game of Thrones (which is actually a heavy inspiration for it). Thanks to going back to the origins of the Butterfly dynasty, the story focuses in the political, social and economic impacts of each queen's reign, both good and bad.
  • Dark Fic: The AU features a variety of topics and scenes that are intense and mature such as war violence, sexual themes, some swearing, Kissing Cousins, more in depths of the Butterfly family's dysfunctional dynamics, and insanity, among other themes. With Game of Thrones being one of the huge inspirations for this AU, it's not really a surprise.
    • Lighter and Softer: That said, after a lot of the fic became problematic in the wake of Jon's exposure as a sexual predator, a few writers, notably RinaEnergy17 and FanLoverStarsNew, tried to create a version of Queens that removed the worst aspects, such as the underage sex, teen pregnancies, cultural appropriation, and incest (or in cases where it wasn't, like with Diana and Tileford's marriage, it was more openly condemned). Although in some aspects Rina's version can actually be a bit darker, such as Solena accidentally killing Jokinna during a mental break, Febe becoming more unhinged after Rowan's death (in a reference to Queen Victoria after her husband's death), Luna being directly responsible for Eclipsa's imprisonment due to false accusations, or Vesper enforcing censorship on the kingdom.
  • Dawn of an Era: The Star Queens each open up a new age of Mewni history.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance:
    • Mewni is a medieval society; girls marrying young wasn't uncommon at the time. Aside, Luna already had been queen for four years, so people were more focused on if marrying was a good idea instead of her marrying at twelve.
    • Some of the things that the queens who aren't otherwise portrayed as evil do can sound rather immoral nowadays, like Crescenta threatening to have her husband tortured and executed, Luna imprisoning some boys for being "handsy" without even telling their families, and even Venus poisoning and decapitating people for being jerks.
    • For most of the kingdom's history, incest between cousins is treated as completely normal. Three queens marry their first cousins and at least Crescenta and Venus have sex with theirs. Apparently, Celestialism doesn't even consider it incest.
    • The Butterfly Kingdom is very religious, and their religion, Celestialism, considers bastards sinful, and the mewnians generally look down on them.
    • Butterfly not only being a Matriarchy, but also having a naked woman as goddess, means that they're a lot more lenient with females exposing their bare chests just like shirtless men are allowed in reality.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Many royal and noble titles state explicitly the actions and traits the Queens and others were most famous or infamous for.
    • Urania the First One: Was the very first Butterfly Queen.
    • Hemera the Builder: Planned and assisted in the construction of Butterfly Castle.
      • Nixie the Queen Poisoner: Poisoned her sister Queen Hemera.
    • Cosmica the Explorer: Was the first Queen to travel to other dimensions outside of Mewni.
    • Polaria the Navigator: Sailed all the seas of Mewni and created maps for the whole world they lived in.
    • Festivia the Fun: Threw awesome parties for Mewni to celebrate the end of the Mud Dwellers Rebellion.
    • Etheria the Knight: Became a knight and led charges to protect Mewni from invasion.
    • Galaxia the Clairvoyant: Could see into the future with her magic.
    • Venus the Fairest: Anyone who looked at her saw their definition of perfect beauty, making her hands-down the most beautiful woman to anyone in Mewni.
    • Meteora The Relentless: Slaughtered hundreds, if not thousands of monsters without a shred of hesitance or regret.
    • Hekatia the Necromancer: Dabbled in dark magic.
    • Heaven the Scared: Childhood Trauma left her constantly paranoid and afraid of enemies.
    • Solaria the Monster Carver: Slayed attacking monsters to pieces.
    • Sideria the Fortunate: Was exceptionally lucky in whatever she pursued, from sports to gambling.
    • Celena the Shy: Rarely showed her face to other outside her family and avoided direct conversation with people.
    • Diana the Huntress: Hunted in the woods constantly.
    • Sky the Weaver: Wove all the Queen’s tapestries for the Grandmother Room.
  • Expy:
  • Everybody's Dead, Dave: The newspaper about the aftermath of the War of the Worlds reveals the downs of the conflict: Moon, Eclipsa and her family, all adult royals of the United kingdoms (except River), Kelly (and Tad), Jorby, Talon, Mr. and Sir Candles, Roy the seller of Goblin Dogs, Presto Change-O, and many more.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: Due to changes in the show's canon, who's descended from who is different:
    • In canon, the dancing queen with rabbit cheekmarks is Crescenta the Eager. Here Crescenta is a different queen long after, and the dancing queen is Solena the Smitten.
    • Festivia the Fun not only is legitimate here but actually is Eclipsa's ancestor
    • Moon has different parents, Sky the Weaver and Lancel McKnight. When Comet was introduced in canon, it was retconned that Sky died a few days after childbirth, named Comet regent and asked her to adopt Moon on her deathbed.
    • Solaria is Eclipsa's great great granddaughter, rather than her mother.
  • Fictional Constellations: The Mewni dimension has its own set of constellations, which share their names with the months in the Mewnian calendar. Their names are, in order: Butterfly, Pig-Goat, Admirestar (a type of telescope), Warnicorn, Dwolf, Rabbit, Dragonette, Razor Crane, Gravnogk and Corn. They also function as a Fictional Zodiac.
  • The Four Loves: The Mewnian wedding altar have a statue of Venus and Febe; they're meant to represent the transition from carnal love (Venus) to a more intellectual, abstract sense of love (Febe).
  • Framing Device: The story is essentially a history lesson from Glossaryck being told to Star and Marco's daughter, Aurora.
  • Funny Conception Story: Skywynne and Filbric conceived Soupina while having sex in the castle kitchen. The maids walked in on the mess they left behind, embarrassing Skywynne so bad that she didn't conceive another child for fourteen years.
  • Gold–Silver–Copper Standard: Mewni's currency consists of Golden Suns, Silver Moons and Copper Stars.
  • Gray-and-Grey Morality: While the Mewmen are portrayed much more sympathetically than in canon, The Mewninpendance was still a tragedy of miscommunication on both sides that went From Bad to Worse.
  • Human Aliens: Unlike canon, mewmans are a completely different species to humans; they share similarities but develop faster, have shorter lifespans, have vibrant hair and eye colors and are more community oriented (with Glossaryck even comparing them to bees or ants). Not to mention the whole mewberty thing.
  • Iconic Item: "Tales of a Butterfly Queen - Solena" reveal the origins of the iconic Princess Tiara. Solena bought it from a tent during her trip to the Silvan kingdom, at the same time defending her pride as the first princess of her kingdom.
  • Identification by Dental Records: Eclipsa gave to Luna a ring that she was known to always wear. When it was returned to her in a box of ashes, Eclipsa took it as proof of Luna's demise in a fire. In reality, another princess stole Luna's ring before the fire, while Luna survived.
  • Irony:
    • Mewni explored the Multiverse long before finishing mapping out their own planet.
    • In a Hilarious in Hindsight sense, Meteora the Relentless was a Fantastic Racist towards Monsters. Canonically, a character named Meteora is a half-mewman half-monster child.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed, but the MHC was resurrected when magic was restored. The Downplayed part comes that they are staying out of non-magical affairs in Mewni so they don't risk dying again.
  • Kissing Cousins: Besides the many queens marrying members of Mewni's noble houses (the exceptions were Soupina, Moon and Star), several queens married their first cousins.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Skywynne and Filbric had a night of passion in the castle's kitchen. They made a huge mess, were almost caught next day and it led to Soupina's conception.
  • Morph Weapon: The wand, of course.
    • Urania: A simple wooden sewing needle with the crystal for the wand tied to it with thread
    • Solena: A winged heart wand
    • Estelaria: A purple crystal star
    • Hemera: An Egyptian-style scepter
    • Cosmica: A compass that points to whatever she desires
    • Polaria: A trident
    • Crescenta: A crescent moon wand
    • Febe: A red crystal moon wand
    • Festivia: A goblet
    • Asteria: A pink inverted star wand
    • Etheria: The hilt of a beam sword
    • Skywynne: A clock wand
    • Soupina: A staff of Asclepius
    • Galaxia: A crystal ball
    • Venus: A mirror that tells her people's true desires
    • Helia: Eventually, she turned it into a tiara
    • Celestia: A bell
    • Meteora: A hatchet, and then a warhammer
    • Hekatia: A torch
    • Eclipsa: A parasol
    • Luna: A rattle, and a flower themed wand when she got older
    • Heaven: A lantern
    • Vesper: A fairy-shaped scepter
    • Solaria: An energy sword
    • Hesperia: A lyre
    • Sideria: A shamrock wand topped with a green hat
    • Celena: A fan
    • Diana: A bow riser
    • Sky: A spool of magic thread
    • Moon: A crystal scepter
    • Star: Her wand as in canon
    • Aurora: a sun-themed wand with wings.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In the canon universe, Rhina the Riddled was a Queen of Mewni, the mother of Celena the Shy. In Jgss0109’s universe, she makes a brief appearance as a common fortune teller who clashes with Galaxia, and through a riddle predicts Venus' life, before being banished from the kingdom.
    • Sideria's male disguise "Jushtin" looks exactly like the canon character Jushtin Butterfly.
  • Neutral Female: The Age of Ascension is the only age where the queen was unprepared for war. This changed when Etheria decreed that princesses were allowed to be trained for combat.
  • Nice Guy: The people of House Forest are constantly depicted as being the nicest of all the nobility.
  • No Ontological Inertia:
    • Hemera's major contribution to the laws of magic was discovering this. This is the reason why she had to build Butterfly castle in the normal way, because if she raised the castle, it would count as a spell and, if she died, the castle would then disappear.
    • This became a major plot point in Helia and Celestia's stories: Helia magically grew gold and silver trees and gave their fruits to many other kingdoms as war compensations. But once she died, the fruits became ash and all the kingdoms started to demand a proper payment from Celestia, who caused the Endless Winter in her attempts to create an endless summer in order to grow extra corn to export.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Remember in "Surviving the Spiderbites", when Eclipsa said that Globgor eating Shastacan was true but complicated? Well, this story has an explaination. Eclipsa was the one to eat Shastacan by swapping bodies with Globgor.
  • Only Fatal to Adults: During Luna's reign, a plague that only affected adults broke off, leaving her without her father and grandmother who still saw her as Just a Kid, and allowing her to actually ejerce her authority.
  • Parental Abandonment: Eclipsa abandoned Luna when she was eight years old. Or so Luna thought. In reality, Eclipsa believed her dead and tried to rebuild her life alongside Globgor.
  • Persona Non Grata: According to this, anyone of nobility who committed a crime serious enough to merit banishment gets their name written in 'The Book of the Banished' (or, as Marco likes to call it, the Death Note), and should the banished try to enter Butterfly Kingdom territory again, magic would automatically kill them.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • If only Celestia had talked with Jasper, she would've known his supposed infidelity was a farce.
    • If only Luna had decrystallized Eclipsa to talk with her, she would've known she never abandoned her.
  • Pun: Asteria wanted a large family as a child. Constellations in Mewni are known as a "family".
  • Related in the Adaptation: Unintentionally, as this was produced before Season Three, but Moon and Star are directly descended from Eclipsa via Luna the Child.
  • Rewriting Reality: Downplayed. At Luna's orders, Glossaryck wrote a second spellbook so Heaven never learned about her grandmother. The author says that Glossaryck would continue to add up to this "fanfic", explaining the clashing differences between the canon royal line and this one.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: Subverted. A crown and a cape are used during the crowning ceremony but the queens' dresses are surprisingly modest and modern for such important event.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Quite a few:
    • Was Jokinna's death an accident, suicide, or murder?
    • What happened to Noturna?
    • Why did Helia die?
    • What happened to Heaven when she was lost in the woods?
    • Who shot Diana full of arrows?
    • Why did Comet ask Glossaryck to strike her husband from the records?
    • Why does magic still exist?
  • Rule of Symbolism: Each of the 32 cheek marks of the queens has a meaning, as seen in Vesper's Alethiometer spell.
  • Secret Test of Character: Vesper gave one of these to her three most prominent suitors, asking them for a gift that would reflect how well they knew her and, especially, how well they'll do as a partner (both romantically and in office).
    • One gave her a portrait depicting her worry-free, which was unacceptable for her as a queen with responsibilities.
    • Another gave her a seven-minutes long make-out session, which was a distraction unacceptable for her as queen.
    • Caspian gave her a detailed profile of issues around the kingdom for her to check into, really showing that he knows Vesper is first of all the queen.
  • Slave Liberation:
    • The first settlers of Mewni actually were escaped slaves who overpowered their masters and hijacked their ships before crashing on what would be Mewni.
    • Urania the First made slavery illegal on her kingdom.
  • Single Line of Descent: One of the many "curses" of the Dark Age was that the queen in turn only had one daughter and heiress, the only exception being Eclipsa by via of her affair with Globgor. Vesper's biography reveals this infidelity was due to Venus' love for Bloomoon tea.
  • Single Sex Offspring: The Butterfly family is known to produce mostly females, and it has never had any firstborn sons.
  • Snipe Hunt: Venus sends Eric on one to get rid of him because she saw him as an Abhorrent Admirer. She's stunned when a little over 20 years later, he comes back with the item she asked for in hand, and even more stunned when her mirror revealed he did it out of genuine love for her, and not because she was the queen or because she was easy to get into bed.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Febe's husband was killed in a failed attempt on her life. Shortly after she learned she was pregnant with her daughter Festivia.
  • Spit Take: Everyone's reaction when Meteora announced her marriage to Norse Fields. The night is remembered as "The Night of the Spit."
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The author's main story is about Star and Marco's daughter Aurora, but the stories of the past queens grew significantly more popular until practically becoming a Spin-Off.
  • Strip Poker: Venus created a variant of Checkers called Venus Checkers, where each time you capture a piece, your opponent has to remove an article of clothing.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The Queens tend to look like female versions of their father a lot, to the point it'd be easier to list the aversions: Festivia (and even then she did have her father's eyes until the grapepper incident), Galaxia (due to being an albino), Venus (thanks to her Kaleidoscope Hair and eyes), Helia (thanks to Venus having yellow colors during her conception), and Sky (who still plays this trope straight, but resembles her mother instead).
  • Succession Crisis:
    • House Avarius currently is the only noble house without a heir (as Ludo is not exactly popular with the ladies).
    • Technically Eclipsa caused one when she abandoned her throne, as her heir Luna was believed to be dead and it'd have taken a while to sort out which of the houses Butterflys married into had the greater claim. It gets resolved when it turned out Luna survived.
  • Test Kiss: Hekatia and Edmund orchastrated a dramatic Big Damn Kiss to see if they should kickstart a romantic relationship, but found they had no spark between each other and moved on.
  • Theme Naming: Not only the queens, but also each of the noble houses has one.
    • Star queens are named after the morning star, star-related concepts or stars themselves. Day queens are named after the sun and light, and Night queens are named after the moon, the night or any celestial body that isn't a star.
    • Redbirds have bird names.
    • Watersons are named after nautical terms, water bodies or specific oceans.
    • Forests are named after trees.
    • Fields are named after either countries (Alemmania) or cultures (Roman).
    • Flower girls are named after, well, flowers. Boys on the other hand have names that end in "-ic".
    • Stones get jewel or mineral names.
    • Fireflies are named after constellations.
    • Cross House is a little more interesting: boys get names that end in "-nd", and girls get names that end in "-ise","-ize" or "-ice".
    • McKnights are named after mythological heroes, but mostly Arthurian ones.
    • The Butterfly cousins important enough to be worth a mention reveal that they're all named after the card suits.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Ludo and his family are officially recognized as nobility and have been made Mewnisters of Monster Rights.
  • Translator Microbes: Cosmica the Explorer created a couple of translation spells due to the many different cultures and races she found in her multidimensional journeys, both for spoken and written language. She, however, says actually learning the language works better in the long run.
  • Vaporwear: Females use translucent clothes for "Kosmoloriana", a traditional dance celebrating the dance of the planets and stars in the cosmos.
  • Walking Spoiler: Good luck discussing anything about Aurora's chapter without discussing the Grand Finale of SVTFOE or the immediate aftermath, as the chapter is a direct result of it. Nor is it easy to bring up Luna without explaining how her actions led to said finale.
  • You Mean X Mas: Mewni has their own version of holidays, both corresponding to real life ones and to certain queens:
    • St. Solena's Day: Spring Equinox
    • St. Asteria's Day: Mother's and Father's Days combined
    • St. Febe's Day: Valentine's Day
    • St. Sideria's Day: St. Patrick's Day
    • St. Helia's Day: Summer Solstice
    • St. Venus's Day: Lovers' Day (a Brazilian holiday)
    • St. Festivia's Day: Fall Equinox
    • St. Luna's Day: Children's Day
    • St. Eclipsa's Day: Halloween
    • St. Urania's Day: Independence Day
    • St. Celestia's Day: Winter Solstice
    • St. Hekatia's Day: Day of the Dead
