Only Exception is a modern AU Elsanna fanfiction written by the author HeartxOfxGold

One Elsa's first day of school in a new city, Anna is persuaded by her friend Hans to trip Elsa on her way to her seat. Since then Elsa has been the outcast of the school along with her two friends Olaf and Kristoff, who are constantly bullied by Hans, Anna and their friends.

Years later Anna realizes the error of her ways and develops an attraction to Elsa, desperately wanting Elsa to forgive her.

"You have the perfect life Anna. Perfect family, perfect boyfriend, nice grades, Ms. Popular and captain of the cheerleading squad! You can get anything you want!" That's what everyone thought and it was true. But, Anna wanted one person that she could never get that disliked her. There was one exception, one person she wanted but couldn't get.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Not physically anyways, but what originally drew Anna to Elsa is that she is the only person who doesn't like her and the only person Anna met that didn't want to get to know her. The abhorrent part comes from the way Anna treated Elsa before.
  • Ambiguous Ending: It is never stated that Anna and Elsa back together, but they share a dance and speak each other's names. However it is greatly hinted that they do.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Instead of Agnarr, Anna's father is named is Kai.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Zigzagged: Hans isn't murderous like he is in the film, making him less villainous, but he also takes on other jerkish qualities that his canon self does not display, physically beating Elsa for enjoyment and threatening to ruin the life of anyone who defies him. Meanwhile, Anna, who in canon is Elsa's faithful champion and The Heroine who refuses to believe that Elsa created the Endless Winter plaguing the kingdom on purpose and goes on a journey through the blizzard alone to help Elsa rather than let the fearful townspeople treat Elsa as a monster, is now a spoiled selfish popular girl in this version, willing to throw Elsa under a bus to please other people. While she originally thought about making friends with Elsa when she first saw her, Hans convinced her that she can't be good all the time and frequently bullied her. Only after seven years after Elsa rejects her does she realize she was wrong.

  • Adaptation Species Change: Olaf and Sven are humans.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In the film Anna was a bubbly awkward girl who always was herself, although she thought who she was wasn't very impressive. In this fic, while she is still cheery, she constantly feels the need to meet the expectations of her friends, family and teachers, letting them sculpt every part of her life. From "having" to be "miss perfect" to "having" to bully Elsa. This causes an emotional turmoil later on when her friends and family pressure her to get back with Hans and outright forbid her from being with Elsa.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Anna is definitely Bi in this story. If Elsa isn't Bi then she's a lesbian.
  • Age Lift: Usually Anna is younger than Elsa, Kristoff and Hans. Here they went to fifth grade together.
  • All Abusers Are Male: Hans has no qualms about punching Elsa, strangling Rapunzel, hitting Belle just to make Elsa unhappy, and nearly hit Anna in a fit of rage. Kristoff also threatens to do five times worse to Anna when Hans is threatening Olaf. Elsa has to stop him from punching her in the stomach. Brandon punches Elsa when he's drunk for refusing to have sex with him and Bart pushes Anna off the benches for rejecting him.
  • Alpha Bitch: Anna starts off as this thanks to Hans influence until she realizes how much Elsa hates her. Causing her to rethink her actions and pull a full-round Heel–Face Turn. Rapunzel also comes off as this being a bully to Elsa herself.
  • Arc Words: Only Exception. Elsa is the only person Anna gets nervous over and craves and Anna is the only person Elsa would forgive.
  • Attempted Rape: Bradon tries to do this to Elsa while drunk, only to be chased away by Anna. Hans tried to do this to Anna only to be chased by Elsa.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Why Elsa is friends with Kristoff and Olaf. Anna finally earns Elsa's approval after standing up to Hans for her.
  • Broken Ace: On the surface Anna is "little miss perfect," strong, independent, the person that everyone wants to know. It is revealed that Anna feels immense pressure from everyone around her (friends, family, teachers) to be "perfect" in their eyes. She is constantly pressured to a point that when she breaks up with Hans everyone she knows tries to pressure her into getting back together with him. After many years she finally breaks down when she looses Elsa.
    • She later admits to herself that it is because of this desire to meet others expectations she 'had' to bully Elsa to get approval from Hans and their friends.
  • Big Bad: Hans.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Kristoff to Elsa, but they never get together.
  • The Bully: Hans has been this to Elsa from the second they met, even being physically abusive. Anna too but mainly because Hans and the rest of their friends were doing it.
  • The Cameo: Rapunzel is Anna's "best friend" who also helps pick on Elsa. Flynn is a guy Rapunzel likes, Belle is an old friend of Elsa's from New York and Edna Mode is the school principal/volley ball coach.
  • Can't Live Without You: Despite how Anna treated Elsa before, they come to love each other so much Anna tells Elsa this when she is about to leave so Anna isn't disowned by her father.
  • Character Development: Anna starts off as a selfish and spoiled Alpha Bitch, but becomes a much more modest and caring person s the story progresses.
  • Cassandra Truth: After seven years, Anna finally understands that her boyfriend Hans is a abusive, cruel sociopath and that the feud between her group and Elsa's is wrong. Unfortunately only she and Elsa are the only ones who are willing to accept it.
  • Cool Loser: The only reason Elsa is considered a loser at her high school is because of her constant humiliation by Hans and his friends. When she moves back to New York, Elsa is instantly popular.
  • The Corrupter: Anna would have made friends with Elsa if Hans hadn't goaded her into tripping her.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Olaf, just like in the movie.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Averted; Anna's father deeply approves of Anna's relationship with Hans and has them elected prom king and queen in an attempt to get them back together. Played straight later when Anna's father forbids Anna from dating Elsa when he finds out her father is a rival of his. Elsa's parents however are willing to let Elsa be with Anna despite disliking her parents.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Hans punches Elsa twice for trying to get close to Anna. Even before it became romantic.
  • Dating Cat Woman: Anna and her friends have been enemies with Elsa and her friends for so long everyone goes crazy when they start thinking about each other romantically.
  • Delusions of Local Grandeur: Anna was deluded by Hans and their friends into believing that it was OK for her to bully Elsa and that everything in her life is perfect as it is, including the feud at school. After being rejected by Elsa, Anna starts thinking about why she doesn't like her and goes through a Heel Realization.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Elsa has this after being tricked by Hans into thinking that Anna was just teasing Elsa when she was being kind before, so bad she can't leave her room and moves back to New York for the rest of the year. Anna has this finding out she was tricked by Hans into hurting Elsa.
  • The Determinator: Anna is determined to make Elsa forgive her and be with her.
  • Dysfunctional Family: Elsa's parents are never home. While on the surface Anna's parents are loving, in later chapters, they prove to be very controlling.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted, After Anna apologizes to Elsa for seven years of bullying Elsa is touched by her apology but tells her she won't forgive her yet. Although after they spend a day together, Anna kisses her and stands up to Hans for her, Elsa starts to get over it.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After many years, heartbreaks, and people telling them they can't be together, Anna and Elsa finally have this in the epilogue.
  • Entitled to Have You: Hans towards Anna. And he will blackmail, threaten and abuse anyone to keep her since they are the "Power Couple" of the school. Not because he actually loves her.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Hans is first introduced as a sociopathic bully with no qualms about humiliating, bullying or abusing a girl since her first day of school for fun. Anna is a genuinely nice girl but can easily be given into temptation to meet another persons expectations, even if it means hurting another. Olaf and Kristoff are shown to be nice guys.
  • False Friend: All of Anna's "friends" qualify as this, they constantly hold Anna to a pedestal and pressure her into keeping up her popular image. From outright forbidding her from being friends with Elsa because they are "supposed" to be enemies to manipulating her to get back with Hans.
  • Hate Sink: Hans has no redeeming traits, he is a nasty, violent selfish Jerkass who practically tortures any man or woman to get what he wants, to get back at others or just for fun.
  • The Heart: Despite being made a social outcast and bullied by Anna since her first day of school, Elsa can't stand by and let Kristoff hurt her to get back at Hans. Even though she hates her at this point. Next to Belle, she is the most moral person in the entire fanfic.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Anna admits that she was selfish and spoiled and, though she was considered a goody two shoes who followed the rules and was genuinely kind to most people, she was convinced by Hans that it was ok to frequently bully Elsa. But after Anna not recognizing her tries to talk to Elsa only to be coldly rejected, did she begin to think about her decisions and change.
  • High School A.U.: From 5th grade to high school graduation to be exact.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: As a result of being bullied and laughed at for seven years and her parents not being around Elsa has serious self esteem issues. They get worse after she believed Anna was only teasing her when she expressed feelings for her to a point she briefly believed Olaf and Kristoff only talked to her out of pity. Luckily she gets over it soon enough.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Elsa leaves Anna so she doesn't have to lose her family.
  • It's All About Me: Hans doesn't truly care about any one but himself and will abuse/ruin someones life to get what he wants. Anna has shades of this, she personally doesn't want to get to know anyone since she is the person everyone is lining up to talk to, and instantly becomes upset once Elsa brushes her off. She admits to being a spoiled and selfish brat who didn't think about her actions much and was just having a good time. But after getting to know Elsa she becomes much more humble. Jumpstarting her Heel–Face Turn
  • If I Can't Have You...: Hans has no problem ruining Anna's life if they aren't together anymore.
  • I Hate Past Me: The present Anna despises herself for the way she treated Elsa in the past.
  • Jerk Jock: Hans big time. Averted with Kristoff and Olaf.
  • Irrational Hatred: In Hans's mind, Elsa is a pathetic weakling who would be better off disappearing off the face of the earth. He hates her so much that just seeing her during his date causes his blood to boil. It gets no better after he discovers Anna loves her.
  • Jerkass: Hans (along with most other guys at the school) and his friends including Anna. Anna learns her lesson though (see below).
  • Jerkass Realization: Anna had one after Elsa (though Anna didn't recognize her because she was drunk) coldly rejects her and throws her out of her room at a party. Since Anna in this version is spoiled and used to everyone wanting to talk to her this had a profound effect even after she realized who she was talking too.
  • Just the Way You Are: Elsa likes the REAL Anna with flaws, not the Anna who has to pretend she's perfect all the time just to meet everyone else's standards.
  • Kick the Dog: Hans has bullied and physically abused Elsa since the day they met for fun. At one point he only allowed a guy into his group if he would date Elsa just to break up with her later. And in the present story when Elsa gets a new girlfriend (Belle) he beats her in front of Belle then tries to hit the girlfriend to make her break up with Elsa.
  • I Love You Because Your Different: The reason Anna becomes attracted to Elsa is because she's the only person who didn't want to get to know her Although given the way Anna has treated her this isn't surprising. The reason Anna falls IN LOVE with Elsa is because, unlike everyone else, she doesn't hold Anna to a standard and accepts people as they are despite their flaws, making her very comfortable.
  • Lack of Empathy: Hans has ZERO problem beating up a woman for no reason and will shamelessly ruin the life of a guy he doesn't even know and his so called girlfriend Anna to get what he wants.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Olaf and Kristoff to Elsa. Elsa even says they are like her family.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Anna bullies Elsa (granted only to please Hans and never felt any real negative feeling towards her, unlike Hans) but is considered nice to everyone else. Although she eventually befriends Elsa and becomes a full Nice Girl.
  • Love Redeems: Elsa to Anna. Anna stays with Hans for a time hoping this, but nothing.
  • Lovable Jock: Kristoff and Olaf are on the Basket ball team and very popular. But they still defend Elsa.
  • Love Triangle: Between Anna, Hans and Elsa. Later Between Elsa, Belle and Anna.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Anna and Elsa's parents are quite shocked that their daughters are dating the child of their rivals.
  • My Greatest Failure: By the 18th chapter, Anna's greatest regret is that she decided to listen to Hans and be mean to Elsa. Admitting she would do anything to take back what she did. Anna's greatest regret in general is that her desire to meet the expectations of everyone around her forced her to do all her action in life.
  • The Napoleon: Edna Mode from the Incredibles is the principal of the school, but despite her size you do not want to upset her. The only person who can calm her down is Belle. She is also the tennis coach and Belle is her star player. After learning about Hans' behavior towards Elsa, she kicks him off the football field and has him suspended, finally freeing Elsa of him for good.
  • Nice To Everyone But You: Anna WANTED to be friends with Elsa when she first saw her but under Hans' influence she bullied her instead. While she was still considered a goody two shoes and kind to everyone else she either stood by and watched Hans bully Elsa or participated herself.
  • Obliviously Evil: Anna didn't seem to understand that her treatment of Elsa was wrong at first. She even questions why Elsa doesn't like her after trying to talk to her.
  • Odd Friendship: Though they all love each other, Kristoff and Olaf are completely different from Elsa. SO much Anna wondered why they hang out since Elsa is way more sophisticated than them.
  • Parental Neglect / Parents as People: Elsa's parents are always working and are hardly ever at home, she describes them as "not the best parents but not the worst" since they always provide her with comfortable living and let Olaf and Kristoff keep her company at their house. Although they truly love their daughter and are willing to tolerate Anna's parents for Elsa to be happy. Anna's parents in contrast are always around her and spoil her, although in the end they prove to be controlling and selfish. When Anna breaks up with Hans they practically try and force them back together and when they find out Elsa's parents are rivals of theirs they threaten to disown Anna if she so much as interacts with Elsa.
  • Perky Female Minion: Anna was basically this to Hans. Hans was Elsa's only TRUE bully, everything Anna did was just following his lead.
  • Popularity Food Chain: Definitely the defining state of the school. Hans and Anna on top, Elsa at the bottom.
  • Replacement Love Interest: Belle to Elsa after she believes Anna was fooling with her. Temporarily when they both learn the truth and Belle encourages Elsa to get back with Anna.
  • Reformed Bully: Anna to Elsa. Anna even wants to date her.
  • She's Got Legs: Anna thinks this of Elsa.
  • Starcrossed Lovers: Elsa and Anna have been classified as "the outcast" and "Ms. popular" for so long people say it is wrong when they start hanging out together. Played Straight when it turns out their parents are rivals and Anna's parents threaten to disown Anna if she stays with Elsa.
  • Stepford Smiler: Anna thinks that her whole life is perfect the way it is and that bullying Elsa/her friends rivalry with Elsa's friends is for the best. But she realizes that she had based her entire life off of meeting everyone's expectations and this takes a tremendous toll on her when she decides she no longer wants be be enemies anymore and her friends constantly tell her she "has" to stay the same. She is basically forced to keep up the image of "the perfect popular girl" whether she wants too or not.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Hans would rather let Kristoff beat Anna than let them dent his pride.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Anna gives one to Rapunzel about her ruining her chances with Elsa and Hans for being selfish and making Rapunzel split her and Elsa up.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: See Used to Be a Sweet Kid.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: Hans is every bit as nasty to Elsa from when he was a kid to a teenager.
  • The Sociopath: Hans may look charming and nice guy, but he is heartless, manipulative and selfish. He has bullied and physically abused Elsa since the day they met for fun. He beats up and threatens anyone else who angers him and is only interested in Anna because she's popular. All the guys in the fanfic basically qualify as this, they all show willingness to hit a girl, even Kristoff had be held back from punching Anna.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Anna didn't think tripping Elsa on her first day would be that bad. But it got Elsa labeled as a outcast, made Hans and his friends her personal bullies, and inadvertently put the basketball (Kristoff and Olaf's team) and football teams (that Hans is on) against each other and divided the school.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Anna is pushed off a balcony by another man and Elsa catches her, Hans reaction: beat up Elsa
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Anna was labeled a goody two shoes until Hans convinced her that she can't be good all the time, and first started by tripping Elsa on her first day of school, twice, making her a social outcast. She continues to bully Elsa for seven years and laughs at her when Hans punches her. Though she is still considered "sweet and kind" by everyone else. Luckily Anna learns the error of her ways afterwards. Averted with Hans who was a abusive sociopath and a bully since childhood.
  • Unequal Pairing: Anna is the most popular girl in school and Elsa is a outcast (because of Anna and Hans).
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Even before they got together Anna became this to Elsa after her Heel–Face Turn going as far as slap Hans. In later chapters Elsa beat up Hans for trying to hit Belle.
  • World War III: Anna jokes that WW 3 would start as a result between the rivalry of the basketball and football teams.
  • What Have I Done?: Rapunzel thinks this after being threatened by Hans into lying to Elsa that Anna regretted kissing her.
