New Moon Over The Middle Kingdom (Fanfic)

New Moon over the Middle Kingdom is a Mulan fanfic by David Clark Allen, originally written in 1999.

Two weeks after the events of the film, Mulan receives a summons from Shang to fight against a renewed attack from the Huns. Mushu is sent to accompany her on a quest to prove he is capable of selflessness, and together, the two undergo yet another adventure.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: Mulan, as expected. She’s promoted to captain by Shang and leads her own squad, and in the end, she’s at the forefront of a full-on charge of people against the Huns.
  • Beta Couple: Ling forms this with Liu, an Original Character, in contrast to the alpha couple of Mulan and Shang.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Mulan and Shang share a kiss under the moonlight in Chapter 5 after she tells him that he’s a great general, in a Call-Back to her telling him in the film that he was a great captain.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Mulan saves China from the Huns again, becomes a couple with Shang, and luckily survives a nearly fatal wound, but her recovery comes at the cost of Mushu’s life, and she never sees him again.
  • Canon Foreigner: The fic features a few original characters in Liu, a village woman Mulan and her friends find in the aftermath of a Hun raid and who becomes Ling’s love interest, and Huan-Gua, the Emperor’s dog.
  • Continuation: The fic is a fan-made sequel to Mulan, notably written years before Mulan II.
  • Disney Death: Near the end, Mulan is fatally wounded by a Hun archer and is dying when Fa Zhou carries her back home. She recovers only when Mushu sacrifices his life for hers.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Grandmother Fa has a prophetic dream about the Huns’ arrival (which consists of seeing her husband and many other people telling her of danger coming and showing her a huge black cloud that kept coming closer), which she told her family about so that they could evacuate the village early.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Mulan is outfitted in a deep purple satin and silk dress for her personal meeting with the Emperor, complete with lavender eyeshadow and mauve blush.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Mushu makes a deal with the First Ancestor to give his life in exchange for Mulan’s. The specifics aren’t shown, but he dies and does not show up again at the ancestors’ shrine, much to Mulan’s grief.
  • Hope Bringer: In the end, Mulan inspires all fifty thousand citizens of the Imperial City to fight against the Huns when she charges against them on her own. Her courage inspires them to take up arms and all rush as one against the Huns, engulfing them completely.
  • Shipper on Deck: Mulan supports Ling and Liu’s relationship and encourages Ling in pursuing Liu’s affections, telling him she has a woman’s intuition that helps her tell that Liu will come around to him.
  • Sole Survivor: Liu is the only survivor of a village raid by the Huns, and is found hiding in the wreckage by Mulan and company.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Mulan and Liu are respectively this, with Mulan being an active soldier and Liu being an ordinary village girl who initially disdains Mulan for defying her gender role.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Subverted. Chi Fu starts off his usual jerkish self, but after Mulan saves his life, he grows to genuinely respect her. When she’s fatally injured and is being taken home in a procession in the end, he actually shows respect for her by taking off his hat and voluntarily bowing to her.
