Fanfic / My Hero Pokedamia

Go To

In a world where amazing creatures called Pokémon exist alongside humans with superpowers called Quirks, one young boy named Izuku Midoriya dreams of being a hero like his idol, All Might. But not all men are created equal, or treated equal. Being one of the unlucky 20% born without a Quirk, Izuku's journey to becoming a hero won't be an easy one. He just has to deal with all of the villains trying to kill him and the girls who love him.

My Hero Pokedamia (FF.net & AO3) is a My Hero Academia and Pokémon crossover fic by Zayden StormVoid (who also does the Tales of the Dekuverse).

My Hero Pokedamia contains examples of:

  • Abandon the Disabled: Hisashi Midoriya left his family after Izuku was diagnosed as Quirkless.
  • Adaptation Species Change:
    • All Might's narration reveals that the experiments Nezu was forced to endure as a lab rat in his past involved combining various Pokémon into one, as opposed to simply being a rare animal with a Quirk.
    • The Nomu is a merge between a man and a Machamp, instead of just someone with multiple Quirks.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Izuku manages to pull Bakugo out of the Sludge Villain and nearly manages to escape with him. He also figures out how to use Full Cowl sooner than in canon.
    • Koda's Quirk becomes a lot more powerful, as it works on Pokémon.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Gran Torino appears right before the Entrance Exam, compared to canon where he doesn't appear until the Hero Killer arc.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Izuku is a lot more assertive than he was in canon. When Iida accuses him of sabotage, Izuku calls him out for making that sort of accusation without foreknowledge or evidence, which is the kind of thing that would make Iida a terrible hero. He also calls Aizawa out for singling him out for poor Quirk control when Izuku only got it a week before the Entrance Exam and that it is Aizawa's job as a teacher to help him with it instead of telling Izuku he doesn't deserve to be in the Hero course.
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • The teachers of Aldera actively covered up Bakugou's bullying of Izuku no matter how bad it got and made things worse every time Inko tried to do something about it.
    • Downplayed with Inko and Mitsuki. Both noticed all the signs that Katsuki was abusive to Izuku, but their hands were tied, especially with Aldera's teachers covering up Katsuki's crimes, meaning they could not take action since there was no evidence to act on.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Todoroki tells Izuku that his father tossed his Vulpix at him when he was young, but Endeavor later states he wasn't the one that gave Vulpix to his son. Taishi can tell something is wrong with Todoroki's memories, but tells Izuku to concentrate in finishing the Festival before working on that part.
  • Artistic License – Chemistry: When suggesting how else Serena can use her Quirk, Izuku refers to water as "hydrogen dioxide". While hydrogen dioxide exists in nature (it is known as hydroperoxyl), anyone with basic knowledge of chemistry knows that water's formula is H₂O, or (if you want to be really pedantic) "dihydrogen monoxide".
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Izuku's Quirk Analysis ability is brought to the fore during the Navy Battle Royale, where he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of his classmates' Quirks and Pokémons with Hatsume's Support Tech to counter pretty much everything the others can do, such as keeping Koda from being able to affect their team's Pokémon.
  • Batman Gambit: In the Navy Battle Royale, Izuku's team has two:
    • Knowing that his team's flag would be the first target for all teams, Izuku has Mei and Ochako create an identical fake flag that they hang at the top of the mast, while the real one is rolled around the mast, keeping to the letter of the rules.
    • One of Izuku's team's Pokémon is Pikachu, with most teams getting scared away because they know Izuku's Pikachu is absurdly powerful, not knowing that this Pikachu is a female belonging to Ochako. Izuku takes advantage of it to keep the other teams away, and when Fumikage's Honchkrow hides their ship, he releases Froakie, who proceeds to steal Todoroki's team's flag while they were distracted trying to steal his team's.
  • Battle Aura: After breaking out of Shinso's Quirk, Izuku summons one made of blue flames.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Serena begins to fall for Izuku when he enthusiastically shows her how far her Quirk can go.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Hypocrisy seems to be a massive one to Izuku.
      • He snaps at Aizawa for calling him useless for not being able to use his Quirk, when the teacher himself Fights Like a Normal, and it's his job as a teacher to help him overcome his liability.
      • Izuku explodes in rage when Todoroki reveals that he manipulated his friends and the girls he is in love with (more specifically, Momo, who is engaged to Todoroki) to turn against him during the Sports Festival, saying that for someone who hates Endeavor for being a Manipulative Bastard, Todoroki turned out to be just like, if not worse, than his father.
    • Insulting his friends is another one. Shinso manages to exploit it during their fight by insulting Serena.
  • Broken Pedestal: Whatever admiration Kirishima had for Bakugou is shattered after he brutally beats up Mina on live television.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Hatsume asks to team up with Izuku, she admits up front she's using his current fame to her advantage.
  • The Chain of Harm: Endeavour is a domestic abuser who hurt his wife and children. Todoroki, one of said children, hurts others in turn, including his own Vulpix and Momo. It's a key reason Izuku has No Sympathy for Todoroki's issues and is in fact furious with him.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • The girls who are interested in Izuku (Ochako, Momo, and Serena in particular) don't like it when one of the others gets particularly close to him.
    • When she sees Ochako and Mei clinging to Izuku after the second event, Nejire (who doesn't even know Izuku yet) turns into a full-blown Yandere, complete with Battle Aura, scaring the bejeezus out of Mirio and almost causing Amajiki to faint.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Izuku, natch. He unknowingly gets the attention of all his female classmates, with Word of God confirming more to be on the way.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Todoroki defeats Ochako in one move, the same way he did to Sero in canon.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Ashido and Hagakure are the most prone to this upon seeing cute Pokémon, like Izuku's Pikachu and Eevee.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Pikachu is unable to do much to free Izuku from the Sludge Villain because if he shocked him, the liquid body would conduct the charge into Izuku as well, allowing All Might to save him as in canon.
  • Dramatic Irony: During the Sports Festival, Mirio keeps thinking that Sir Nighteye would love to have Izuku as an intern. Meanwhile, Sir Nighteye is busy looking at everything Izuku does and twisting everything to fit his preconceived idea that Izuku isn't All Might's ideal successor.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: 1-A's girls (including Tsuyu and Kyouka) blatantly do this to Izuku while they check him out in his U.A. gym uniform.
  • Engagement Challenge: After the second event, Momo explains that she was betrothed to Shouto against her will, but her parents told her that, should either she or someone she chooses win the Festival, they will break the betrothal and free Momo to marry whoever she wants.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Shinsou is about to lose to Izuku due to his insults against Ojiro failing to get the appropriate reaction out of Izuku for his Quirk to affect, Shinsou realizes in the nick of time he could insult Serena instead, and it works.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Endeavour and Mirko are disgusted with Bakugou when they see how feral he fights Ashido during their Sports Festival match.
  • Formerly Fat: Inko takes inspiration from Izuku to lose weight and recover her fitness.
  • Foreshadowing: During the Navy Battle Royale, after releasing Pikachu, Izuku doesn't give orders to the electric Pokémon, who barely speaks and sticks close to Ochako, and the other students notice that Pikachu's attacks are weaker than they should be. Also, Kirishima notices something falling off Izuku's ship while it's hidden, but nobody else does. This is because this Pikachu is actually Ochako's female Pikachu, which has had her tail wrapped in tape to make her resemble Izuku's Pikachu's — and the 'falling object' was Froakie, whom Izuku had released so he could steal flags without being noticed.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse:
    • Izuku acknowledges Todoroki's father Endeavor is a terrible one, but this does not excuse all the jerk moves Todoroki has done, especially when the latter does the same things he decries his father for that results in him hurting people and Pokémon who bear no responsibility for what his father did.
    • During their tournament fight, Izuku calls out Shinso for excusing his anti-heroic actions as a reaction to being bullied; as far as Izuku's concerned, nothing excuses using people as tools.
  • Harem Genre: Izuku quickly gains the affections of all of his female classmates, and during the Sports Festival, gains the affections of many more from outside his class.
  • Healing Hands: Izuku's Eevee knows Heal Pulse and can use it on humans, although he can only stop the pain in the latter case, which tires him a lot.
  • Hope Spot: When Shinsou first entered middle school, he had a brief moment where new classmates praised his Quirk, and then went over how it could be used for villainy, before alienating him just like in his previous school.
  • Horrible Judge of Character:
    • Todoroki thought he could simply reveal to Izuku how he manipulated his friends and the girls he is in love with for his own personal gain and Izuku would not mind. This nearly gets his head caved in by a royally pissed Izuku.
    • Kirishima thinks that Bakugou is "manly", even though he's a major jerkass. Then he sees the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown Bakugou gives to Mina and is promptly horrified.
    • Nighteye regards Bakugo as a better choice for One for All than Izuku, purely on regards to his Quirk and fighting skill.
  • Hypocrite:
    • When Aizawa claims Izuku is worthless as a hero because he doesn't have perfect control over his Quirk, Izuku calls him a hypocrite because Aizawa's Quirk only lets him erase other Quirks: everything else in the man comes from his training, so what right does he have to call Izuku worthless, when he's supposed to teach him how to fight and use his Quirk?
    • Todoroki hates his father for him being a manipulative bastard that bought his mother and arranged his betrothal to Momo, but he himself manipulates and forces Izuku's friends (even using said betrothal to force Momo to join his team) to act against him during the Sports Festival.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • After Izuku returns from the infirmary, he gets hugged by Serena, Mina, and Tooru, and Momo tells the girls off for crowding Izuku. After they back off, she proceeds to hug Izuku as well.
    • Nighteye, in the same line where he ridicules Izuku's ideas during the Navy Battle Royale, claims that All Might would have been able to come up with the same plans.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Sir Nighteye refuses to accept Izuku is a worthy wielder of One for All. Upon hearing Izuku's speech at the Sports Festival, most people are moved or inspired by it. Nighteye is one of the exceptions, managing to somehow interpret it as Izuku being disrespectful of All Might's legacy. And no matter how outstanding Izuku's ideas and actions are, he keeps telling himself it's not impressive.
  • I Want Grandkids: Inko is very excited when Izuku starts making female friends. Heck, when All Might informs her about how Izuku's female classmates are all attracted to him, she squeals in delight.
Inko: EEEEEEEEE! I'M GOING TO HAVE SO MANY GRANDCHILDREN TO SPOIL!
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Even though Izuku managed to pull Bakugo out of the Sludge Villain, All Might still has to intervene - mostly because Bakugo insisted on screaming at Izuku right there and then about not needing to be saved instead of getting away.
    • Even though he develops Full Cowling early on, Izuku still breaks himself during the Quirk Assessment, the Heroes vs Villains, and the USJ.
    • All Might warns before the Hero vs Villains exercise begins to not use lethal attacks, but Bakugou still tries to blow Izuku up like in canon despite it. All Might and Aizawa then try to stop the match unlike canon where it was allowed to continue, but Nezu overrules them.
    • Despite the different students and the second event being different, Izuku's team in the Sports Festival's second event still consists of him, Ochako, Hatsume, and Tokoyami. And their plan during the event is largely the same as in canon - float away by combining Ochako's Zero Gravity with Hatsume's equipment for as long as possible while defending themselves from the other teams.
      • In fact, every team is pretty much the same as in canon - the only difference is that Serena replaces Aoyama in Shinso's team.
    • Mineta and Kaminari manage to trick the 1-A girls into dressing up as cheerleaders, even though Mineta is a General Studies student.
    • Izuku's first tournament match is against Shinso, who manages to trap him with his Quirk by insulting one of Izuku's classmates, only for Izuku to break himself out and quickly defeat Shinso.
    • Iida still "fights" Hatsume, who takes advantage of him for the sake of getting attention for her "babies".
    • Kaminari's fight with Shiozaki and Momo's fight with Tokoyami end the same way as in canon.
    • Kirishima and Tetsutetsu end their fight in a double knock-out.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Nighteye sees Izuku's double Batman Gambit, he claims that All Might would have easily come up with the same plan. The immediate next line is All Might admitting to himself that he wouldn't have been able to craft anything similar.
  • Internal Reveal: Mina reveals during her match with Bakugo that she knows he's an unrepentant bully, and Bakugo all but confirms it in a rant.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Bakugo, big time. Izuku saves him from the Sludge Villain? "He was doing it because he wanted to make me look weak!" Izuku suddenly has a Quirk? "He hid it just to laugh in my face!" Ojiro and Shoda drop out of the tournament? "They're wimps that know they can't beat me!" Mina calls him out on being a bully? "Izuku tattled about me to make me look bad!"
    • After Izuku calls him out for his behaviour and excusing it on his father's treatment of him, Todoroki doesn't truly acknowledge Izuku's points, only getting angry that the others don't (seem to) care about his past.
  • Jerkass Realization: After his battle with Izuku, Shinsou realizes what a jerk he's been to Izuku's classmates and how that doesn't make him a good hero.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: It's heavily implied that Nezu intends to rip Bakugo's apart in the aftermath of his feral No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Ashido.
  • Loophole Abuse: Played with. To 1-A's great frustration, Bakugo's brutal beatdown of Ashido is technically in line with the rules as explained by Recovery Girl. Izuku mentally notes that part of what makes Bakugo's abuse of him so bad is that he knows full damn well where the line is between what he can get away with and what even Aldera's corrupt and enabling teachers can't cover up. However, Recovery Girl assures Ashido's friends that Nedzu will find some way to ensure Bakugo suffers consequences, giving hope that the trope will be subverted.
  • Mons as Characterization: So far everyone has at least one Pokémon that suits both their personality and their Quirk.
    • Izuku's first Pokémon, Eevee, represents Izuku's boundless potential, while Pikachu represents Izuku's strength and power.
    • Serena's team consists of Water Types, fitting her Quirk.
    • Ochako's team consists of a Minior (Minnie), a Kirlia, a Pikachu (Chu), and a Dottler. Minnie and Dottler tie into Ochako's space theme, Kirlia ties into Ochako's kindness, and Chu ties to Ochako's admiration of Izuku.
    • Hagakure mentions having a Kecleon, which can turn invisible.
    • Kyouka has a Noibat, Loudred, and Jigglypuff; with the first two representing her sound-based Quirk and the third showcasing her singing capabilities.
    • Tsuyu has the frog-like Politoed, Croagunk, and Palpitoad.
    • Similarly, Tokoyami has the raven-like Corviknight and Honchkrow.
    • Kaminari has his own Pikachu named Sparky.
    • Bakugo, fittingly has two Fire-types, a Cyndaquil (which evolved into a Quilava) and a Charmeleon, and a shiny Gyarados (because of course he has one).
    • Todoroki's team is composed of Ice and Fire types with one Water type. Two of his Pokémon are Alolan Ninetails and Kantonian Vulpix, each representing the two sides of his Quirk and showing his disregard for his fire half, while his Galarian Darmanitan is the representation of how he wants to only use his Ice side but will instinctively use Fire if he loses control.
    • Monoma has a Ditto, which, much like him, can only fight by copying other Pokémon.
    • Kirishima has a Quilladin, an Onix, a Rhyhorn, and a Rockruff, which represent his Hardening Quirk and his Nice Guy attitude that hides a willingness to fight with everything when he's angry.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Midoriya's first two Pokémon (Eevee and Pikachu) are a clear reference to Partner Pikachu and Partner Eevee.
    • Izuku's Pikachu is a lot like Ash's Pikachu, with him saving a young Izuku and Eevee from a flock of wild Spearow like in the first episode of the anime. Izuku's Pikachu also refuses to go into his Poké Ball whenever possible, and is noted to be unusually powerful compared to the average Pikachu.
    • Inko has a Mr. Mime called Mimey like Delia does.
    • Izuku gets inspired to develop Full Cowl from Gran Torino's Taiyaki.
    • Combusken once calls Pikachu "Detective Pikachu".
    • Mina's Muk will attempt to cuddle with her whenever he's brought out.
    • Tsu has a Croagunk that Poison Jabs boys that are too flirty, just like Brock's Croagunk does to him.
    • Todoroki instinctively starts to use his fire half when Izuku rushes him during the second event.
    • Izuku sees the Vestiges as he attempts to break out of Shinso's Quirk.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: During their Sports Festival match, Bakugou beats Mina up so badly she is covered in burns and bruises by the end.
  • No-Sell: When Shinso punches Izuku in the face during their fight, all he gets is the feeling that he just punched a brick wall while Izuku doesn't even acknowledge the attempt.
  • Oblivious to Love:
    • Izuku somehow manages to miss that all the girls in his class are attracted to him, no matter how obvious it is. For example, when in Chapter 24 Ochako leaves the stands in jealousy over his enthusiastic reaction to Hatsume's gear, Izuku thinks she was angry because he didn't ask her if she wanted Hatsume in the team.
    • Izuku also misses all the blatant hints that his mother is in a relationship with All Might (and it gets as blatant as "found them getting dressed while coming from the kitchen").
  • Oh, Crap!: Momo has one in the Navy Battle Royale when after Iida steals Izuku's team flag, Izuku's ship sails well away from Todoroki's instead of trying to get the flag back. Cue Izuku revealing the team's Batman Gambit.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Narrowly subverted. During the above mentions groping incident during the Entrance Exam, Hagakure sweetly asks Izuku to let go before she breaks his other arm.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Todoroki may have won his bout with Serena during the Sports Festival, but that is only because Serena, who had him dead by rights, decided he wasn't worth it and forfeited, meaning he only won by technicality. No one considers it a proper victory.
  • Polyamory: Well, it is a harem fic. According to the tags on AO3, he'll get together with Yaoyorozu, Uraraka, Ashido, Asui, Jiro, Hagakure, Hatsume, Melissa, Serena, Nejire, Setsuna, and Miruko.
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • Mina hits hers when she realizes what a horrible person Bakugo is, and goes so far as to slap him in the face with acid in her hand - which in turn triggers Bakugo, who becomes feral enough to hand her a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
    • Kirishima does the same when he realizes Bakugo doesn't care about anyone but himself and that he's a Quirkist asshole.
  • Rescue Romance:
    • Ochako and Tooru begin to fall for Izuku after he stops the Robo-Groudon at the Entrance Exam.
    • Momo does the same when Izuku helps her after she accidentally begins to choke on some food.
  • Rousing Speech: Izuku's speech at the Sports Festival is so moving that All Might and the other U.A. Teachers, Inko, Mitsuki, Masaru, the other U.A. Students, and most of the people watching it love it, with the previously antagonistic 1-B and General Course students reassessing their opinion of Izuku.
  • Sacred First Kiss: Played for Laughs with Sparky, who wanted to give this to Izuku's Pikachu but lost it to Ochako's Pikachu instead.
  • Saying Too Much: All Might (who is secretly dating Inko) sees Izuku texting with someone and asks him if he's texting Serena or Momo - even though Izuku hasn't even mentioned Momo to All Might. All Might manages to cover up by claiming he saw Momo's name on Izuku's phone.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Izuku is teased with every girl in 1-A and some other girls outside the class.
    • All Might gets it very early in the story, starting when he begins to flirt with Inko when he comes to the Midoriya's home to pitch in his training plan for Izuku.
    • Kaminari and Ibara flirt as part of their pre-fight banter, with Kaminari noting he likes her snark. Ibara for her part is open to dating him and likes the idea of having a boy she can give "guidance".
  • Shout-Out: While helping Serena train her Quirk, Izuku tells her "Do or Do Not. There is No Try."
  • Signature Move: One trick All Might has taught to all his Pokémon is Counter-Shield, which consists of using an offensive move as a protective shield. Izuku and Pikachu manage to replicate the trick in the first Pokémon combat with Todoroki. Todoroki seeing All Might use the move makes him realize All Might is Izuku's mentor.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: All of 1-A's girls are attracted to Izuku because he happens to be a smart, attractive Nice Guy.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Izuku gets Bakugo out of the Sludge Villain's grasp, Bakugo is more concerned with shouting at Izuku that he didn't need any help than with the fact that the Villain is closing in and trying to kill them.
  • Sneeze Cut:
    • Chapter 22 has a whole chain of people thinking about someone and the scene changes to said someone. When Nejire thinks not even Ryukyu would save her rivals for Izuku's affections, the scene changes to said heroine sneezing. Ryukyu's Salamence then wishes Riley was there to calm the argument between Ryukyu and Miruko, leading to a scene change where Riley sneezes. Riley's Pokémon then thinks of Taishi as a potential source of information on Izuku, which again leads to a scene change where Taishi sneezes.
    • In Chapter 25, after Neito Monoma mocks Kaminari over his loss to Ibara, Nighteye sneezes.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Apart from Koda and his Quirk, Izuku gains the ability to understand Pokémon after he gets One for All.
  • Suckiness Is Painful: When Pikachu and Froakie begin to have a verbal spat while in their Pokéballs, Izuku threatens to force them to endure Mimey's act for an entire day (he does like it, but he knows neither of them does). Both of them stop.
  • Suspiciously Clean Criminal Record: After U.A.'s faculty notes Bakugou's appalling behavior, they are increasingly suspicious of his squeaky-clean record as it does not match reality. Nezu eventually realizes Aldera outright tampered with both Bakugou's and Izuku's records.
  • Tempting Fate: In Chapter 11, Jirou tells herself she isn't going to go gaga over Izuku like the other girls in her class. Later in that chapter, her heart skips a beat when Izuku makes a Nonchalant Dodge to avoid Todoroki's Ninetails' attack.
  • What If?:
    • When the 1-A girls dress up as cheerleaders (after Mineta and Kaminari trick them to do it), the 1-B girls join them of their own will.
    • Three of the matchups for the tournament round of the Sports Festival are different:
      • Todoroki fights Serena instead of Sero. Also, instead of the Curb-Stomp Battle from canon, he almost loses because Serena keeps melting his ice and he refuses to use the fire half of his Quirk, only reaching the next phase because Serena forfeits in the moment of triumph.
      • Instead of Bakugo, Ochako instead faces Sero and wins, managing to move on to the second round.
      • Bakugo fights Mina instead. Mina gets multiple hits in, but after she calls him out as a bully and hits him in the face with acid, Bakugo unleashes a savage No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that forces Midnight to quickly call for the infirmary robots the moment Mina falls out of bounds.
    • Because Aizawa has been very concerned with Bakugou's appalling behaviour beforehand, he does not bother defending him when the audience for the Sports Festival call Bakugou out since he is very much aware they are right to do so.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Recovery Girl canes All Might when he admits he told Izuku to go 100% when using One for All for the first time.
    • When Iida accuses Izuku of sabotage without evidence, Izuku tells him off as making false accusations would make Iida a terrible hero.
    • When Aizawa attempts to state Izuku doesn't belong in the Hero Course, Izuku calls him a hypocrite in a brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech for not acting as the teacher he's supposed to be.
    • After Todoroki reveals he manipulated or forced Izuku's friends to act against him during the second round of the Sports Festival, a furious Izuku punches him (deliberately missing by a few centimeters) and calls him out for such unheroic behavior that makes him no better than his father that he so despises.
    • Izuku ends his fight with Shinso by calling him out on his unheroic behavior.
    • Mina calls out Bakugo during their tournament fight on his horrible personality and actions.
    • Kirishima also calls Bakugo out for what he did to Mina, and then for his utter lack of care over what he did to Izuku.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • Izuku's speech to Shinso is a combination of this, a What the Hell, Hero? and "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
Izuku: Any Quirk Can be Great! Any Quirk Can be Worth Something! Even if isn't something 'Flashy'! Even Those Without Quirks Can Be Worth Something! Anyone Can Be a Hero! Even You!
    • Ibara tells Kirishima that, even if he made a mistake with trusting Bakugo, he can still work to fix things and earn forgiveness from his friends.
