Strange nightmares are plaguing the ponies of Equestria.
Somepony must help ponies to face their deepest fears, but unless Princess Luna is able to discover who—or what—is responsible, the nightmares may never end.
Scootaloo is ready to prove that she can be as fearless as her big sister, Rainbow Dash, even if it means never having a peaceful night's sleep again.
Moonlight contains examples of:
- Anxiety Dreams: Sweetie Belle's nightmare involves her anxiety about the upcoming school talent show, which is worsened by how bad the Cutie Mark Crusaders did at the last talent show.
- Dream Walker: Luna enlists Scootaloo, then Sweetie Belle, then Applebloom to help her in dealing with the breakout of nightmares throughout Equestria and help the dreamers resolve them.
- "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Each nightmare that Scootaloo enters requires her to help the dreamer combat their greatest and/or deepest fear.
- Mind Virus: Some kind of entity is causing ponies to fall asleep and dream their worst nightmare.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Luna points this out as one reason why she chose Scootaloo, as both of them have somepony they want to impress and prove themselves to (Rainbow Dash for Scootaloo, Equestria in general and Celestia for Luna).
- Your Mind Makes It Real: Scootaloo gets a chilling realization of this when she gets injured in Applejack's nightmare. When she wakes up, she realizes that the flank injury is on her real body as well. Sweetie Belle also has this, when the repeated magic usage and teleporting in Fluttershy's dream gives her a headache that persists after she wakes.
