Fanfic / Mistakes Were Made

Go To

Two friends, Joe Pholus(BakaSmurf) and Trevor Janai(luckychaos), find themselves transported to Kuoh Academy. Confused, and with only the vaguest of plot details to go off of, the two quickly find themselves entangled in the affairs of devils and angels.

A dual-Friend Insert fic written by Geoff_(and then KingOfCrafters), following the adventures of Joe and Trevor as the two try to survive Highschool DxD's supernatural battles and harem antics. Without any foreknowledge to help them. Can be found here.

Has officially been declared a Dead Fic.

Mistakes Were Made contains examples of:

  • A Good Name for a Rock Band: Trevor says "The Virtues of Leather" sounds like a good band name after Rias says Akeno is trying to sell Kiba on the virtues of leather (presumably clothing).
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The Fallen attack the Occult Research Club offscreen to recapture Asia.
  • Anti-Climax: The fight with Riser counts as one of these as the peerage oneshots him through a surprise attack.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Shemhazai, Azazel's personal assistant.
    • King: This man has the face of a man who is powered by coffee and spite.
  • Berserk Button: Freed hates being called gay. So much so that he broke stealth to try to kill Joe, Trevor, Kiba, and Akeno when he heard Joe call him "the gay priest".
  • Beyond the Impossible: Ddraig regards Trevor pulling Joe out of Juggernaut Drive as this.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Joe, Trevor, and Akeno bodily remove Asia from the room whenever she walks into something lewd-related (such as a pantsless Trevor).
  • Foe Romance Subtext: Trevor says this is occuring between between Albion and Ddraig, no matter how much either of the dragons in the sacred gears deny it.
  • Gender Bender: After Joe helped Kiba work through his holy sword related problems, when Azazel shows up with his Gender Swap Raygun, Kiba leaps at the chance to become a girl permanently to fit more in line with Joe's tastes.
  • Genre Savvy: The FI's know that DxD is a shonen harem anime, which allows them to avoid a lot of the pitfalls common in the genre.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Joe steals some ice cream from Mittelt (it had been given to her by Akeno) while she's unconscious, only to discover that the ice cream was wasabi and not mint.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Trevor uses a streetlamp as a massive bludgeon. Once he unlocked the Boosted Gear, it has become a more viable weapon.
  • Laughably Evil: Freed. He's a monster, but his banter with the FIs is hilarious.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Joe is becoming this, after receiving strength training from Koneko and speed training from Kiba.
  • Loving a Shadow: After thinking about it for a bit, Joe concludes he and Irina don't know each other well enough to rush into a relationship the way they've been doing and convinces her to take it slow.
  • Magic Knight: Trevor. Alongside fire magic and magic shields, he also uses a street lamp as a bludgeoning weapon. Said lamp is actually his preferred weapons.
  • Mama Bear: Rias does not like when someone hurts her Peerage. It's a Gremory thing.
    • Sirzechs has made it clear that if the FI's completely fail to prevent Rias getting married to Riser, he's going to wind up stepping in personally, which will probably kick off a civil war in hell.
  • Noodle Incident: When offering to show Asia around Kuoh Town, Joe mutters to himself that hopefully he won't end up in the crime district like the last time he was set loose in a city.
  • Oblivious to Love: Joe is a major offender of this. The amount of flags he's raised without the slightest clue of what he's doing has made Trevor feel like slapping him upside the head. Or facepalming really hard. Or both.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Joe hits his after meeting Diodora and Kuroka in one day and seeing their threats towards Rias's Peerage, who he considers his family. It's enough to trigger Juggernaut Drive.
  • Remembered Too Late: Joe, having watched the first few episodes of DxD, knows Issei, whose place he and Trevor are taking, was killed by a disguised Fallen Angel who asked him on a date. However, he doesn't remember who she was disguised as or where she committed the murder until after she's brought them to that location under a different pretense and is about to murder them.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge / Roaring Rampage of Rescue: After the Fallen torture Koneko and abduct Asia, the entire rest of the Occult Research Club storm their church to free Asia and tear the Fallen to pieces.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: After the Occult Research Club attacked the Church to save Asia, Mittelt of the Fallen Angels that were defending the Church was discovered spared, abet traumatized, by Rias for information on why the Fallen Angels attacked those under her protection.
  • Take Me Instead: Asia gives herself up to the Fallen to get them to stop torturing Koneko.
  • Title Drop: After trying remain in cover as ordinary transfer students, and getting hurt in their first encounter with Freed, Trevor accidentally lets slip to Rias that both he and Joe had finished High School already. After Joe wakes up and calls him out on blowing their cover, Trevor can only respond with "Mistakes were made."
  • Trauma Conga Line: Poor Joe. Mere hours after the two friends found themselves in the DxD universe, they are both painfully murdered by a Fallen Angel. Shortly after Rias resurrects them as devils, they are attacked by another Fallen Angel and Joe is nearly killed by a light spear. Later, when Joe and Trevor discover Freed and Asia, Freed shoots Joe and escapes. And then Sirzechs literally fucking punches his Trauma Button to the point he nearly deserts Rias.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Both Joe and Trevor were torn away from their home world with no way back. Trevor looks forward to eventually paying a visit to his old family to let them know he is all right, but Joe eventually points out that their Earth has no defenses against the DxD world that would inevitably follow them home, telling Trevor to give up that small quest of his before he brings a 'literal armageddon' to a world unprepared for it.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: To get back at Kiba for abandoning him to Rias's makeover, Joe calls him cute in public where it will get out to their Yaoi Fangirl classmates, reasoning that any humiliation resulting from this is Worth It if it makes Kiba suffer more. Akeno approves and says she's glad to have someone to discuss her tendencies with, causing Joe to briefly bluescreen before he decides it's still Worth It.
