Fanfic / Miraculous: Uncertain Future

Go To

Miraculous: Uncertain Future is a fanfic by TheGreenCatNoir, the fic is set in the "Timetagger" future of Miraculous Ladybug.

After some careful planning and a series of bad decisions from Marinette, the new Hawk Moth has managed to gain significant ground, killing most of the heroes. Now it is up to the remaining heroes to stop Hawk Moth before it is too late.

The fic can be found here at Archive of Our Own.

This fanfic supplies examples of:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Marinette and Adrien are much nicer than their canon counterparts lacking most of their more negative traits. Due to the fic being in the future, this could be due to them having grown up and matured.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Lila Rossi, while already horrible in-canon is even worse in the fic. She is the current Hawk Moth and a dangerous supervillain who kills multiple people throughout the events of the fic.
  • Anyone Can Die: No character is safe from being killed in this fic.
  • Apocalypse How: Hawk Moth has destroyed Paris and turned it into a wasteland with nobody left but her akumatized villains and any heroes who managed to survive. It does eventually escalate to all of France.
  • Asshole Victim: Lila ends up being killed by Cat Noir while she is already down but considering she was ready to destroy France just to win, it is deserved.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Exploited by Hawk Moth, who used the pain from torturing Luka as a way to akumatize him into Toxion.
  • Big Bad: Hawk Moth, who in this fic is Lila Rossi, is the one who starts the conflict with her massive attack on Paris and manages to outsmart the heroes.
  • Big "NO!": Lila lets out one when she is killed by Cat Noir.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The heroes, in the end, are able to defeat Lila Rossi/Hawk Moth, stop her plan and undo most of the damage with the Miraculous Ladybug. However, due to Lila destroying the first lucky charm, they weren't able to undo the deaths of most of the heroes, all of whom were good friends who are now gone for good. Marinette and Adrien even make reference to this in the bonus chapter.
  • Boring, but Practical: Lila's favourite method of dealing with the heroes is pretty simple, to disintegrate them, but it is effective.
  • The Chessmaster: Lila proves herself to be quite an effective one by the end of the story. She had studied Hawk Moth enough to know exactly who he was and waited for the perfect time to kill him and steal his Miraculous. After which she stole the Grimoire and studied it for years to unlock tons of special powers. She used the Butterfly Miraculous to kill anyone who might stand in her way, in ways that would be impossible to detect. She also waited patiently for years for the chance to finally strike when the heroes would not be prepared for her return.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Lila had studied the Grimoire for so long that she came prepared with secret techniques to use just in case part of her plan failed. Like the ability to akumatize villains without leaving an object exposed and to have her akumatized villains able to resist any Miraculous holder's power.
  • Death by Adaptation: Due to the nature of the source material not many characters die permanently. In the fic however multiple people end up murdered permanently, including Gabriel Agreste, Rena Rouge, Carapace, Pegasus, King Monkey, Multimouse, Minotaurox, Chloé Bourgeois, Pigella, Tigresse Pourpre, and Vesperia.
  • Disintegrator Ray: This is Hawk Moth's favourite method of taking the heroes using an akumatized villain fittingly named Disintegrator.
  • Downer Beginning: The fic starts with a flashback showing how Lila betrayed and murdered Hawk Moth and stole the butterfly Miraculous for herself. After hiding and plotting her return for many years, she does, and after the death of the mayor, she uses this opportunity to akumatize dozens into villains. Lila overwhelms the heroes and kills most of them. She also manages to knock the Miraculouses off Ladybug and Cat Noir, leaving them powerless to stop her.
  • Electric Torture: Lila uses this on Luka to akumatize him.
  • Fatal Flaw: Lila, despite all the planning she put in and how close she got to winning, had one major flaw that would lead to her downfall: arrogance. She vastly underestimated the heroes and did not even consider the idea that they would be willing to kill her to save Paris.
  • From Bad to Worse: Lila's plot getting all of Paris destroyed was bad enough, but in Chapter 7, she escalates to attempting to destroy all of France just so she can guarantee her chances of getting Ladybug and Cat Noir's miraculouses.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Ladybug admits in Chapter 3 that due to being out of action for so long, she had forgotten that she could use her yoyo to summon any Miraculous to her. She ended up bringing the box with her, which proved to be disastrous when they are knocked into the sewers.
  • Godhood Seeker: Lila's motives for getting the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculouses are far less altruistic. She wants them so she can wish herself to become a god.
  • Heroic Willpower: Luka, reminiscent of what Alya did in "Gang of Secrets," and Reflekta's defeat in "Guiltrip," breaks out of Hawk Moth's akumatization with help from the Pig Miraculous power.
  • Hope Spot: In Chapter 3, while things are looking bad and Luka ends up captured helping Marinette, Adrien, and Kagami escape, they are the very least managed to get the Miraculouses back, giving them a fighting chance against Hawk Moth.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Cat Noir feels this way after he was forced to use his cataclysm on an akumatized villain, not knowing if it could be undone by the Miraculous Ladybug.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Marinette has this reaction to the death of her teammates, especially Alya, constantly angry about the fact she couldn't save them.
  • Intangibility: Both Marinette and Lila use the Kwamis abilities to phase through walls for their goals. Marinette to get back the Miraculouses and Lila to steal the grimoire from Gabriel's house.
  • Killed Off for Real: At the beginning of the story, Rena Rouge, Carapace Pegasus, King Monkey, Multimouse, and Minotaurox are all killed off, and due to some trickery from Hawk Moth, Ladybug is unable to undo it with the Miraculous Ladybug. The same thing happens to the villains killed by Cat Noir's cataclysm including a random akumatized villain and eventually Hawk Moth herself.
  • Lack of Empathy: Lila does not care who she has to kill to achieve her goals and is perfectly fine with destroying Paris to get the Miraculouses.
  • Legacy Character: Lila steals the Butterfly Miraculous as well as the name Hawk Moth after killing Gabriel.
  • Loophole Abuse: Lila uses this massively to her advantage. Only the currently summoned Lucky Charm can undo any damage done before it was summoned. So when Lila has Disintegrator destroy it, Ladybug can't undo it, badly crippling her team.
  • Matricide: Lila ended up killing her mother so that she wouldn't discover that she had the Butterfly Miraculous.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Lila nearly manages to win by the end of Chapter 6, with only Ladybug and Cat Noir left and her entire army ravaging the city. They do pull out of victory but not without a cost.
  • Oblivious to Love: Adrien still had no idea that Marinette had a crush on him even into his adult years.
  • Sole Survivor: By the end of Chapter 5 Ladybug and Cat Noir are the only heroes left with the rest being either killed or akumatized.
  • The Starscream: Lila had for a while allowed herself to be akumatized by Gabriel, and once she learned everything she needed about him, she killed him and stole the Butterfly Miraculous.
  • Superior Successor: Lila is a very twisted example to Gabriel. Compared to Gabriel, she is a lot smarter and manages to get way closer to succeeding. She also proves to be way worse in lots of ways lacking Gabriel's more honorable and well-intentioned traits when it comes to being a villain helps her since she is willing to go to even more extreme lengths to win.
  • The Unmasking: Marinette and Adrien are both forced to reveal their identities to each other after they both lose their Miraculous.
  • Wanton Cruelty to the Common Comma: The fic's punctuation isn't great. The text often uses periods where a full stop would be more appropriate and leaves out commas and periods altogether where they needed to be.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Chapter 6 focuses on a flashback to what Lila did to get many advantages over the hero, how she stole the grimoire, and the people she killed who got in her way.
