Fanfic / Mamoritai

Go To

Adrien Agreste’s style was singularly reckless, cocky, and committed to victory. He committed to every strike, hedged his bets on nothing but his own skill, and threw himself headlong into every challenge.

How no one besides Kagami had deduced that he was Chat Noir was completely beyond her.

Mamoritai is a Miraculous Ladybug Fan Fic by siderealSandman, and is complete.

Mamoritai contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change: Due to her name not being known at the time of writing Tsurugi Tomoe is called Tsurugi Tomoko in story.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Due to not appearing in Canon until after the story was written Duusu is very nervous and shy.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Kagami becomes Peon with the Peacock Miraculous, which gives her limited precognition.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Part of Kagami's attraction to Adrien is due to his skill as a fencer and bravery as Chat Noir.
  • Ambiguous Ending: Downplayed. In the final chapter Hawkmoth hasn't attacked in weeks, Kagami's relationship with Adrien remains strong, Paon is about to meet Ladybug (who holds reservations) and she still hasn't told either hero Hawkmoth's identity. But Kagami doesn't believe he'll keep his end of the bargain. And the heroes will be ready for what comes next.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Kagami doesn't like it when Chat Noir places himself in harm's way defending Ladybug.
  • Arranged Marriage: Discussed in chapter 7 when Kagami's mother states, in no uncertain terms, that Kagami has to choose a future fiance or one will be chosen for her. Kagami's internal monologue revealing that Tomoko has been searching for a suitable partner since before Kagami was born.
  • Badass Normal: Deconstructed. Kagami is a prodigy fencer who can easily fight off an akuma's puppets and beat Adrien three out of five times. But can't even land a single hit on Chat Noir when he's holding back.
  • Battle Couple: Implied once Kagami gets the Peacock Miraculous.
  • Blackmail: Paon threatens Gabriel to stop terrorizing Paris or she'll reveal his secret because she doesn't want Adrien to lose his father.
  • Birds of a Feather: Adrien and Kagami are both rich, sporty, Star Wars nerds with a ton of responsibilities on their shoulders. Also, they bond over their bisexuality in Chapter Ten.
  • Brutal Honesty: A facet of Kagami's character that Adrien sees as differentiating her from Ladybug.
  • Blatant Lies: In chapter 8, when Alya catches Adrien and Kagami coming out of a broom closet (due to Adrien needing to recharge his powers) both of them give flimsy non-excuses as to why they need to go.
  • Cassandra Truth: Ladybug doesn't believe Kagami when the latter tells her Gabriel is Hawkmoth due to the events of the Collector. And letting her jealousy cloud her judgment.
  • Cast Full of Rich People: Due to following Kagami and Adrien, roughly half the named characters are wealthy.
  • Caught in the Rain: In chapter 14 Adrien and Kagami take refuge in her room and officially become a couple.
  • Celebrity Crush:
    • Adrien had one on Adrien Paul when he was younger.
    • Kagami had one on Shinohara Ryoko.
  • Cosplay: At least Adrien and Kagami use lightsabers.
  • Crush Blush: Both Adrien and Kagami turn red after sparing with "lightsabers" and catching sight of each other's bare abs.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Inverted Trope. Kagami's mother makes no secret about approving Adrien as a potential suitor. Before they even start dating.
  • Declaration of Protection: After Kagami gets her hands on the Peacock Miraculous she makes it her duty to protect Chat Noir like he protects Ladybug.
  • Doppelgänger Dating: Explicitly averted, with Kagami. Adrien notes that she is only superficially similar to Ladybug.
  • Dreaming the Truth: Kagami wakes up in a cold sweat in chapter 16 when she realizes that Gabriel's voice is the same as Hawkmoth's.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Both Adrien and Kagami after strenuous "sparing".
  • Everyone Is Bi: At least, both Adrien and Kagami are.
  • First Kiss: Kagami kisses Adrien in chapter 13 after they're caught in the rain.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: When Gabriel tries to use his wife as justification for his actions as Hawkmoth, Paon immediately denies that his suffering is any more important than everyone else's.
  • The Gadfly: It's implied Adrien's insistence on the merits of backflips in the Star Wars movie fight scenes is simply to tease Kagami.
  • Holding Hands: Adrien and Kagami announce their relationship by walking into school like this in chapter 15.
  • Internal Reveal: The story begins with Kagami figuring out Adrien is Chat Noir.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: A major theme of the story.
    • Adrien's conversation with Kagami in chapter 2 reveals how much strain not being able to talk to Ladybug has been putting on him. Even as he states that it's necessary.
    • Lampshaded by Kagami's internal monologue, where she points out how unfair it is to expect strangers to trust each other without question.
    • Not knowing Chat Noir's identity and, more importantly, not being honest with Adrien about her feelings leads to Marinette losing her chance to be with him.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: A point of similarity between Adrien and Kagami before going to Francoise Dupont.
  • Love Confession: When Kagami tells Adrien, Mamoritai in chapter 13.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Adrien refuses to let the potential complications of dating Kagami stop him from pursuing his happiness.
  • Old Money: Kagami tends to roll her eyes whenever Tomoko goes into a long-winded description of the Tsurugi legacy.
  • One Head Taller: Kagami has to stand on her tiptoes to kiss Adrien by surprise.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Paon gives one to Gabriel after he tries to use Emilie as justification during their confrontation:
Paon: Is that how you justify it? That your pain, your heartbreak, somehow justifies the suffering you’ve caused? That your life is worth more than the lives you ruin?
  • Second Love: True for Adrien when he falls in love with Kagami.
  • Secret-Keeper: After telling Chat Noir that she figured out his identity, Kagami becomes this for Adrien.
  • Secret Relationship: Adrien implies doing this due to the reaction his Fangirls might have. Kagami isn't having any of that.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Gender inverted in chapter 9. After getting annoyed with Alya, Kagami states that she doesn't "have her sights set" on Adrien. At least not at the moment.
    • Completely inverted when Kagami, angered by the above conversation with Alya, cuts off Chloé by sarcastically stating that Adrien is her "willing love slave".
  • Shipping Torpedo: Alya doesn't like how close Adrien and Kagami have been. But doesn't say anything until Kagami asks what she did to offend Alya.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Kagami gives one to Adrien.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Why Kagami considered a relationship with Adrien in the first place.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When Alya stumbles on Adrien and Kagami coming out of a closet in chapter 8, it seems like they were in there making out. Their guilty reactions don't help.
  • Uncovering Relationship Status: A variant in chapter 14. Kagami asks Adrien if he's over Ladybug when he suggests becoming more than friends. Adrien replies that he "has to be" and reaffirms his intent to date Kagami.
  • Worthy Opponent: Kagami sees Adrien as this due to his sword skills and it's what initially draws her to him.
