Kingside High is a Chessgame of the Gods spinoff/side story, featuring several characters from different Chessgame stories in a high school setting. The story is written by the same people who write their own Chessgame stories, though it is organized and directed by SwiftEthan and R.L. Yoshi (the latter of whom also publishes the story). The story manages to keep true to the personalities of various characters, though since they're now in high school rather than the battlefield that is Chessverse Equestria, some changes have been made.

The fic was cancelled and deleted due to the authors losing interest in it, as well as several authors not being around anymore.

Student characters that have been introduced so far include:

Tropes found in this work

  • Adaptational Wimp: In a sense, everyone gets hit with this, but mainly due to the Lighter and Softer setting.
    • Arrell in particular is an obvious example, since unlike the other characters, his personality was changed as well.
  • Big Eater: Aniseed is a Parasprite, so this is to be expected.
    • Zeta is said to be one as well.
  • Butt-Monkey: Jack becomes this when around Havoc.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Havoc and Knightmare.
    • And a lot of the faculty.
  • Cool Pet: Arrell has a phoenix named Zoey for a pet.
  • The Dreaded: Vice principal Zephyr. After an interaction with her, Havoc falls to the floor and starts ranting to himself, the text in his dialogue being twisted to look like Zalgo infected it. On the other hand, that could just be Havoc being Havoc.

  • Establishing Character Moment: All the students get one.
  • Lighter and Softer
  • Male Gaze: "Oh, and Havoc? Stop staring at my ass."
  • Meaningful Name: Principal Checkmate, given that this is a spinoff of Chessgame of the Gods.
  • Odd Friendship: Knightmare and Zeta; Aniseed and Arrell. Jack and Havoc may also count, though that friendship seems to be more one-sided.
    • Interspecies Friendship: Obviously, due to every main character so far being a different species, this comes into play.
  • Only Sane Man: Jack for the students, Checkmate for the staff.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Every roommate arrangement so far. Havoc and Jack, Aniseed and Arrell, Knightmare and Zeta, and Cata and Tiff are all red and blue respectively.
  • Self-Deprecation: After running headfirst into a door, Arrell jokes that at least brain damage isn't a problem. "Hard to damage what isn't there, right?"
  • Ship Tease: Oh so many.
  • Shrinking Violet: Justified (and somewhat downplayed) with Arrell, as he's new not just to the school, but to the entire town. Though he warms up to Aniseed rather quickly.
    • The school nurse Candy Cane is also an example, along with English teacher Flowery Prose.
