Journey to Raftel provides examples of:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: As Luffy was more than capable of beating Higuma himself, Shanks doesn't lose his arm to the Lord of the Coast.
  • Adaptational Badass: Nami. She manages to kill Arlong and his crew singlehandedly thanks to her abilities.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • In canon, Vinsmoke Reiju didn't appear until Whole Cake Island. Here, she appears working at the Baratie with her brother, far earlier than in canon.
    • Carina debuts shortly before Loguetown rather over two years later just before One Piece Film: Gold.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Luffy's crew are pirates in canon. Here, they act as bounty hunters to earn money for their journey, though they call themselves "adventurers".
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: As Luffy and his crew are "adventurers" rather than pirates, they have a largely neutral relationship with the marines rather than antagonistic.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: As per Kairomaru standard, certain characters have different powers.
    • In canon, Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Here he ate the Saru Saru no Mi, Model: Sun Wukong.
    • In canon, Nami had no powers, instead using her Clima-Tact. Here, she eats a currently unknown Devil Fruit, speculated to be the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Pele.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In canon, Luffy's crew were known as the Straw Hat Pirates. Here, they don't have a name.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In canon, Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates. Here, he wants to be free to live as he wants.
  • Animorphism: Luffy's shown the ability to turn into animals, such as turning into a tiger to spar with his grandfather.
  • Ascended Extra: In canon, Vinsmoke Reiju was only featured in Whole Cake Island. Here, she's a member of Luffy's crew.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Due to having the powers of Sun Wukong, Luffy has a wide variety of powers, many of which are completely unrelated. Shown examples include flight, Living Lie Detector eyes, animorphism, and clones.
  • Death by Adaptation:
  • Demoted to Extra: When Luffy's crew leave Syrup Village, Usopp stays behind, as he wants to join a crew of pirates.
  • Family of Choice: Reiju calls Zeff "father" as she and Sanji leave the Baratie, showing that she and Sanji view the whole restaurant as their true family.
  • Give Me a Reason: Sanji dares Nezumi to fight back at Arlong Park. To his credit the corrupt Marine avoids poking the angry man.
  • Good Parents: Tough Love aside, Garp is extremely supportive of Luffy, helping him figure out his Devil Fruit.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Luffy's still after the One Piece, despite not being a pirate, but that's simply due to being interested in the treasure itself rather than being pirate king.
  • Intimate Healing: In order to save Nami from Don Krieg's MH5 poison gas, Reiju has to kiss her.
  • Living Lie Detector: Luffy's Fiery Eyes Golden Gaze, which lets him detect lying, forgery, and evil. Nami quickly decides to avoid trying to con him when she learns about this.
  • Magma Man: Nami's devil fruit makes her a volcano goddess.
  • Martial Arts Staff: Luffy's Ruyi Jingu Bang. Mihawk says that, were other weapons ranked the same way as bladed weapons, Luffy's staff would be ranked as Supreme Grade, the same as Mihawk's Yoru.
  • Me's a Crowd: As per Wukong's myth, Luffy can pluck hairs from his body and turn them into clones of himself. Useful for getting a numerical advantage...or to help crew a ship.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Nami fights Arlong and his crew herself specifically to prove to both him and herself that she's strong and no longer afraid of him.
  • Mundane Utility: Luffy uses his clone powers to man a ship and his Living Lie Detector powers to tell real treasure from fake.
  • Power Perversion Potential: When they finally have sex for the first time, Luffy uses his Me's a Crowd powers to pleasure Nami.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Nami gets to vent eight years of anger when killing the Arlong Pirates.
  • Shout-Out: Mad Treasure during his battle with Luffy, grabs him with chains from the Jara Jara no Mi and pulls Luffy towards him while yelling "Get Over Here!"
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Commodore Purinpurin and his crew don't die to Arlong's officers due to Luffy and Co dealing with them before they arrive.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Nami spares Hachi's life, because he did try to help the people of Cocoyashi as best he could.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Nami eats a mythical zoan devil fruit, seemingly the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Pele.
    • Carina eats Mad Treasure's Jara Jara no Mi after Luffy kills him.
  • Torso with a View: Nami has a habit of finishing off her enemies in this manner. Just ask Don Krieg, Chew, and Kuroobi.
  • Wild Card: Luffy wants to live as freely as possible on his adventure, even if it means crossing pirates or making an enemy of the World Government.
