Wangxian, Nie Huaisang and the Junior Quartet somehow travel in the past during the Qishan Wen Archery Contest. They, the younger Wangxian and pretty much all the sects are transported into a vast room to watch the events of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Tropes in Impossible? Hold My Emperor's Smile
- Abusive Parents: Yu Ziyuan quickly establishes herself as a physically, verbally and emotionally abusive monster. To the disgust of most of the Cultivation World.
- Jin Guangshan is not surprised that in the future he disposed of Jin Zixuan for political gain.
- Affectionate Nickname: The gods and Ghost Kings call both Wei Wuxian's A-Ying.
- The Atoner: Both the older Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren bitterly regret their persecution of Wei Wuxian and the Wen Remnants. Using Wei Wuxian's notes they manage to make the time travel array that starts the plot.
- Awful Wedded Life: Madam Jin and Jin Guangshan are the prime example. To the point where Madam Jin wants him dead. Also Yu Ziyuan and Jian Fegmian.
- Big Damn Heroes: Xie Lian and Hua Cheng show up just as Jin Guangshan tries to rally the Cultivator Clans against the Demonic Cultivator Wei Wuxian. He is quickly shut down.
- Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: When Lan Zhan's library fantasies are shown to everyone, Xie Lian has to restrain Hua Cheng. He Xuan also wonders out loud if they ought to kill Lan Wangji for laying hands on A-Ying.
- Brainless Beauty: Young Lan Xichen believes that Jin Guangyao is a good person despite all the time travelers tell him otherwise. Hopefully a talk with his future self will finally convince him.
- Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Lan Wangji raised Sizhui with love and care, and it shows.
- Butt-Monkey: Poor Jingyi's past insults and initial actions toward Wei Wuxian as Mo Xuanyu cause him to be harshly punished by Lan Wangji.
- Cool Big Sis: Jiang Yanli as established by cannon. Also Shi Qing Xuan toward Wei Wuxian. They are extremely eager to plan Wei Ying's wedding.
- Dirty Coward: Jin Guangshan did not fight in the Sunshot Campaign. Only showed up once the fighting was done to unjustly claim the credit.
- The Dreaded: The Calamities give Cultivators heart palpitations.
Word of God states that the only reason Qi Rong has not show up yet is because he will send someone into a fatal Qi Deviation. - Everyone Has Standards: Pretty much everyone is disgusted with Yu Ziyuan's quickness to blame everything on Wei Wuxian.
- Fountain of Youth: After dying from destroying the Yin Tiger Tally, Wei Wuxian's soul regressed to childhood. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng raised him during those thirteen years in Ghost City.
- Greed: Jin Guangshan's main motivation for everything he did. He just wants more money, power and influence. Marketing Wei Wuxian's inventions obtained him quite a lot of gold and power.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Pretty much Madam Yu's entire reason of being. She is envious that Cangse Sanren existed, birthed a son better than hers. And that Wei Wuxian loves and is loved in return by Lan Wangji.
- Irony: If it wasn't for Cangse Sanren's intervention Jiang Fengmian would have died from Lan Qiren's actions during a Nighthunt before he could marry Yu Ziyuan and father her children. Therefore the Jiang Clan is the one that owes an unrepayable debt to Wei Ying, not the other way around.
- The Cultivation World's main grievance toward Wei Wuxian's was his status as the son of a supposed servant. And yet as the biological grandson of the Immortal Baoshan Sanren, adoptive son of the Heavenly Crown Prince and the Ghost King he very much outranks every one, arguably even Sect Leaders.
- It's All About Me: Jin Guangshan deludes himself that he will manage to find a way to seize control of the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and several Gods. Who can kill him with a stray thought.
- Happily Adopted: Baoshan Sanren considers Xie Lian and Hua Cheng to be the adoptive parents of Wei Wuxian, not the Jiangs. Wei Wuxian is very happy with this.
- Honorary Uncle: Wei Wuxian seems to have gained a lot of those during the thirteen years. Including He Xuan and Shi Qingxuan.
- Lethal Chef: Xie Lian. Every god except Hua Cheng is horrified at the idea of him learing a recipe from Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian admits that his congee recipe, that still gives the Junior Quartet nightmares, came from Xie Lian.
- Missing Mom: The very first time Wei Wuxian gets Lan Wangji drunk they briefly discuss their missing moms. Prior to ordering Wei Wuxian beaten, Lan Qiren cruelly drops some hints about Cangse Sanren but does not elaborate when Wei Wuxian asks to know more.
- Never Mess with Granny: Baoshan Sanren quickly puts Yu Ziyuan and Jin Guangshan in their places. Too bad that the two wretches are Too Dumb to Live.
- Noodle Incident: During the thirteen years that he was dead Wei Ying lived in Ghost City with Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. He had a lot of adventures there.
- Not Me This Time: The Headshaker is the first suspect when the future characters realize the array transported them in the past. The culprits are Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren, as their way of making amends.
- Never My Fault: Yu Ziyuan's attitude. She never accepts blame for her action and blames everything that goes wrong on Wei Wuxian.
- Oh, Crap!: When Hua Cheng announces who he is, pretty much all cultivators just about soil themselves. Same when He Xuan shows up as well. Yu Ziyuan is actually stupid enough to declare war on Black Water Sinking Ships. Thankfully Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Cheng defuse the situation.
- Papa Wolf: Xie Lian, Hua Cheng and He Xuan toward Wei Wuxian. Hua Cheng borders on being a Boyfriend-Blocking Dad.
- Parental Marriage Veto: Out of envy and resentment Yu Ziyuan tries to prevent the younger Wangxian from marrying but the arrival of Baoshan Sanren, Wei Ying's grandmother quickly puts an end to any delusion that Yu Ziyuan has any right to made decisions on WWX's future.
- Pride: Yu Ziyuan is too idiotically proud to realize that she is making herself look like an hysterical, ill breed shrew in front of the whole Cultivation World and several Gods and Demons.
- Related in the Adaptation: Baoshan Sanren being Cangse Sanren's biological mother rather than just her Shizun.
- Sadist Teacher: Lan Qiren, as shown during the viewing. Hua Cheng is not amused.
- Supreme Chef: Jiang Yanli. Everyone compliments her soup.
- Too Dumb to Live: Jin Guangshan and Yu Ziyuan continue to badmouth and belittle Wei Wuxian even when several Martial Gods and Ghost Kings show up and show great favor toward him.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Cangse Sanren saved the life of Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanli, and yet Yu Ziyuan treats her son horribly.
- Useless Bystander Parent: Jiang Fengmian is proven to be one since he does nothing to restrain his wife.
