Fanfic / Hysterical

Go To

Hysterical is a darkly comedic My Hero Academia fic that involves the common plot of Izuku actually having a quirk. In this case, though, this Quirk allows him to utilize hysterical strength that regularly injures him and to heal from any injuries when his heart stops. His hero academia will be a complicated path for certain...

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Slightly for Shigaraki and Kurogiri; while they are first introduced during the USJ incident in canon, Izuku runs into them the day Shigaraki breaks into UA.
    • Mei is also introduced the day before the USJ incident rather than the Sports Festival arc.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While Katsuki is still a dick to everyone else around him, he does treat Izuku decently (for Katsuki's standards) as opposed to bullying him in canon.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Izuku is much more hyper and trollish. His encounter with Monoma implies that his Quirk puts him into an eternal adrenaline rush, explaining his mania.
  • Agony Beam: Multiple members of Class 1-A come to the conclusion that Aizawa's Quirk is this after him using it on Izuku during the Quirk apprehension test nullifies Adrenaline Rush's Feel No Pain aspect, causing the teen to roll around garbling half-profanities.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When the cafe they're in is getting robbed, Izuku is held hostage and is begging Katsuki to do something, quickly. Everyone else assumes he wants Katsuki to save him; he actually just wants him to stop his drink from falling over and spilling on his notebook.
  • Batman Gambit: Izuku convinces Stain to kill him instead of Iida under the guise of "punishing him more", knowing that he'll be freed from the effects of the Serial Killer's Quirk once his Resurrective Immortality kicks in.
  • Birds of a Feather: Izuku and Mei get along quickly due to being equally eccentric.
  • Black Comedy: Much of the humor of the fic revolves around Izuku (and those who truly know how his Quirk works) being completely blasé about him being injured or killed, much to the shock of everyone around him.
  • Crack Fic: The story doesn't take itself seriously, having so many gags even during otherwise serious moments.
  • Death Activated Super Power: While Izuku is able to use his hysterical strength without dying, he can only heal himself when his heart stops.
  • Death as Comedy: Many of Izuku's deaths often result in comedic moments, whether he's killing himself by jumping off a roof to leave Katsuki with the problem of explaining his Quirk or Aizawa walking into a self-poisoned Izuku dying on the floor and just walking away.
  • Death Is Cheap: Well, for Izuku, at any rate. His Quirk reverses his death every time he dies.
  • The Dreaded: Izuku. Everyone that knows him aside from Katsuki is terrified of him at worst, unnerved at best. The thought of having to face him in the Sports Festival is enough to get Ochako to forfeit her match against Katsuki, and Momo gets so nervous just from being near him that she's practically inhaling buckets of popcorn out of stress. Even when he manages to give her a pep-talk and calls himself "great moral support"...
Momo: Oh no, definitely not. Your literal existence has caused my anxiety to go through the roof.
  • Faking the Dead: Izuku is able to do this for a time when he makes Shigaraki think that he disintegrated him during their first encounter.
  • Feel No Pain: Due to his Quirk, Izuku is unable to feel any pain from his injuries or deaths. When Aizawa erases his Quirk, the shock of feeling pain for the first time in a decade due to a broken arm leaves him cursing and rolling on the ground.
  • From a Single Cell: Izuku is able to revive himself from seemingly any form of death; even after he's been blown up due to the power of One for All or disintegrated by Shigaraki, he's able to come back.
  • HA HA HA—No: Nedzu pulls off one of these after Aizawa asks for a raise.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Aizawa undergoes one when he believes Izuku has been killed by Shigaraki during the USJ incident.
    • Iida falls into one after Izuku gets murdered by Stain.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath:
    • Hatsume's reaction to accidentally killing Izuku is to drag his corpse over to an incinerator to dispose of it.
    • Gran Torino, upon seeing Izuku die for the first time, casually calls All Might to inform him that his apprentice is dead while remarking that he already has a suitcase packed and that he plans to move to Mexico due to having connections to a cartel. After finding out about how Izuku doesn't feel pain, he complains that killing him won't be as fun.
    • Izuku is perfectly fine with traumatizing people with his quirk by killing himself in front of them.
    • Aizawa ignores Izuku after finding him seizing and foaming at the mouth on the bathroom floor after he poisoned himself.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Parodied with Izuku distracting the press so everyone can get to class and Tenya treating this like Izuku has died.
    • Izuku also explains that he wants to be a hero so that other people (parents, children, friends) don't need to die saving others when he can do so with no consequence to himself.
  • I Know You Know I Know: Izuku and Katsuki's particular brand of friendship can result in this, as seen during the battle trials.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Aizawa feels this any time Izuku does something insane. This turns out to be a constant feeling.
  • Indy Ploy: Izuku and Katsuki breaking into UA to find out their entrance exam results basically relies on this.
Izuku: "You do realize I had like 15 minutes and a bus ride to plan the entire successful infiltration of the number 1 hero school.”
  • Lemony Narrator: The narration will often go on tangents, break the fourth wall, and openly comment/mock whatever is going on at that moment.
  • Logical Weakness: Izuku may be immortal, but he can still be injured and resurrection takes time. He can be incapacitated for a time.
  • Loophole Abuse: Senor Conejito, Koda's rabbit, is able to be made 1-A's class president because the rules don't say you can't have an animal as your class president. Of course, the principal being Nedzu, that may be deliberately worded as such.
  • No Fourth Wall: Everyone, from the narrator to various characters, makes it clear they're part of a fictional story.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Thanks to Katsuki dragging Izuku's body away after he dies during the slime villain's second attack, he finds out about All Might's true form and One For All earlier than in canon.
    • Due to the fact that their relationship is better than it is in the canon series, Izuku manages to convince Bakugo to intern under Miruko instead of Best Jeanist.
    • All for One wanted to take Izuku's Quirk after confirming his ability to come back from the dead. He has the winged nomu snatch hum at Hosu to facilitate this, but Izuku's Quirk has already fused with One for All enough it cannot be stolen.
  • Running Gag:
    • Y'all Might, All Might's "cousin from Texas."
    • Izuku traumatizing people by killing himself in front of them.
  • Seen It All: People who have known Izuku long enough (mainly Katsuki and his mother) tend to have this reaction to anything he pulls or any other weirdness that occurs around them.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Izuku and Katsuki often spend their time insulting each other and riling each other up, but it's clear they're the closest person to the other (mainly because no one else can bear to spend a great deal of time with them).
  • With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Izuku is a hero because his Quirk allows him to literally die for the safety of others and come back so other people don't have to.
  • World of Snark: If anyone has the opportunity to snark, they'll take it.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: All For One becomes very intrigued when he realizes that Izuku may be immortal, he plans to capture him after he has an assassin confirm Izuku's Resurrective Immortality.
