Fanfic / Freaky Friday (Worm)

Go To

Freaky Friday is a Worm alt-power fanfic written by TheGreatestGimmick and hosted on SpaceBattles Forums.

Taylor gets trapped in the locker, but the turning point is that she desires for others to "walk in her shoes". The result? She triggers not with the power to control bugs, but the power to swap bodies with other people, and finds herself in Sophia's body.

Freaky Friday provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Taylor gains the power to swap bodies with people rather than control bugs. In addition, she can also use the powers of those she swaps minds with.
  • Amazonian Beauty: When Taylor gets a good look at herself (in Sophia's body) in the mirror, she can't help but marvel at how muscular and attractive her former bully's body is.
  • Asshole Victim: Sophia ends up suffering from Taylor's canon fate, only dying from it. Very few people seem to care though, as the Wards are more concerned with helping Taylor out and consider her to be far more preferable to Sophia anyway. In other words, Taylor accidentally committed a Kill and Replace, but who she's replacing is so bad that no one cares.
  • Becoming the Mask: Calle tells Taylor that she's going to have to essentially become Sophia to hide her true identity and powers. It starts to work a little too well, as Taylor begins to exhibit some of Sophia's trademark aggression the longer she stays in her body.
  • Body Surf: Taylor can possess anyone on a "pseudo-line of sight" basis and swap bodies with them.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Taylor re-branding as Eclipse has this. To go with the Stellar Name, she uses several little drones orbiting around her as stars would do and a two-people tactic making use of a "Sun".
  • Dark Is Not Evil: What Taylor hopes to become.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • One of the major cruxs for the story is that Amy was killed during the Brockton Bay Brigade's attack on Marquis's home while her canon counterpart lived to the end.
    • All of New Wave except Brandish, Glory Girl, Laserdream and Shielder as an extension/result of the above.
    • Because Sophia and Taylor swapped bodies when she was on the verge of death in the locker, the former Ward/bully is dead as well where as in canon, she's still alive post-Golden Morning.
  • Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: For Carlos and Dennis. They know Taylor is very different from Sophia, but Carlos still feels uneasy around a girl with the face of a former bully and Dennis still feels attracted to Sophia's body.
  • Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest: A slight deconstruction with Dennis. From his point of view, the hot girl he couldn't help but think attractive is now a sweeter person open to a more friendly relationship. Dean discreetly points it's actually weird and not really acknowledging Taylor as her own individual.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Lampshaded by a cringing Taylor when she sees Battery-as-Assault punching Assault-as-Battery. In the habitual circumstances, a small female hitting her invulnerable male partner is slapstick comedy. Genderswap the roles, and you have a well-built man flat-out hurting a more frail woman.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Since she was relentlessly bullied for more than a year, Taylor is very socially-anxious, and the circumstances in which she joins the Wards made her sure the other teens would hate her on sight. Dean's point-of-view immediately reveals the Wards are actually eager to meet her and make her feel at home.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Taylor almost has a Heroic BSoD when she's informed of the fact that Sophia's mother and big brother had to be informed that their daughter and baby sister won't never come back home.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: Since Vicky was adopted and raised by the same person as Crystal and Eric, she considers them her siblings instead of her cousins.
  • For Want Of A Nail: A lot of the changes that occur in the story can be tied back to Amy's death.
    • Othalla is the only Healer in Brockton Bay; this gives Empire 88 disproportionate influence in the city.
    • Brandish has gone full Knight Templar in her pursuit of justice, having rebranded as "Judge", being The Atoner over Amy and her teammates being killed.
    • Burnscar was extracted from the Slaughterhouse Nine and recruited into the Justice Brigade (this fic's equivalent of New Wave) on the grounds of mitigating circumstances.
    • A literal example of this trope involves a rusty nail in the locker, that contributes to the deaths of Taylor's home body and Sophia's consciousness as much as a lack of Panacea does.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: The premise of the fic is Taylor's power being this.
  • Gender Bender: The Body Surf isn't limited to same-sex people, so there's a lot of it but temporary.
  • Kill and Replace: Accidental version. By switching bodies with Sophia when hers was at a point of near death, Taylor winds up killing her bully by accident and is now stuck with her identity as her primary body.
  • Klingon Promotion: Downplayed; Taylor's Kill and Replace of Sophia is treated like this by the Protectorate.
  • Man, I Feel Like a Woman: Right after being switched into his wife's body, a bemused Assault is seen fondling "his" boobies.
  • Meaningful Rename: Two from Taylor.
    • Since she cannot be openly "Taylor" but doesn't want to be "Sophia", the protagonist decides to call her civilian identity "Anne", after her deceased mother.
    • She also re-brands the "Shadow Stalker" persona with the new alias Eclipse, since her existence eclipsed Sophia's.
    • Brandish also got one in the backstory, as the Knight Templar cape known as Judge.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: When a mind is swapped into another body, this mind will experience no gender dysphoria. More concerning, Taylor starts to feel more aggressive and angry the longer she uses Sophia's body.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Danny beat Alan within an inch of his life when he tried to convince him to cover Emma's involvement in Taylor's "death".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Two in quick succession alert the Protectorate of Taylor's "Freaky Friday" Flip powers.
    • Dragon notices Taylor-As-Sophia's erratic flight patterns, lack of Breaker State, raw panic, and confusion over Armsmaster's threat of electric restraints to counter the aforementioned Breaker State.
    • Immediately after Taylor jumps from Sophia's body to Armsmaster's, Armsmaster-as-Sophia begins ranting about Master/Stranger Protocols and berating the PRT for their incompetence.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Assault is quite happy to creatively use the time in which he and his wife are switching bodies.
  • Preferable Impersonator: Taylor basically is Sophia, since she has to assume her body and identity. Downplayed with the Wards since they know that and as such like Taylor for her own merits, but civilians and media start to note "Shadow Stalker" having a change of character and they find her much more approachable and nice.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Taylor can swap bodies with anyone and even use their powers while in that body. The main power that she keeps is the ability to switch from body-to-body regardless of who she is. The power to switch bodies would be pretty useless of it was isolated to her body, which is now dead.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After the Brockton Bay Brigade accidentally killed his daughter, Marquis discarded his "don't hurt women" rule and killed everyone in the Brigade except for Brandish before he was killed by a mortally wounded Lightstar.
  • Shout-Out: Taylor's "true" cape alias, Friday, is a direct reference to the movie.
  • Spotting the Thread: Vicky is fully convinced that Taylor stole Sophia's body when she sees the proud, Book Dumb Shadow Stalker cowering in front of her anger and understanding a mythological reference.
