Dream Come True (TerminalMiraculosis) (Fanfic)
"If you could do something crazy right now. What would you do?"
— Susie

Dream Come True is a Deltarune fanfiction series written by TerminalMiraculosis (under the pseudonym NoelleHolidayStanAccount). Diverging from the events of Chapter 2 after Noelle kisses Susie on the Ferris Wheel, the series starts out mostly Noelle’s growing romance with Susie, her tumultuous relationship with her family, and eventually the fate of the world.

The fics can be found here.

These fanfictions provide examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: One that's a returning one from canon Deltarune. The Myth Arc of the mystery of the Roaring Knight's true identity is both rendered moot and basically ditched due to the fact that Kris is the Knight.

  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Kris and the Red SOUL have a significantly less antagonistic relationship than in canon. Dream Come True features Kris and Red having an amicable relationship, with Red serving as the Voice of Reason to Kris and the both of them willingly scheming to create more Dark Fountains. Meanwhile, canon Kris and the SOUL explicitly are on opposing sides, with Kris working with the Knight while the SOUL actively wants to stop its goals. This results in Kris frequently antagonizing the SOUL, whether to foil their schemes or simply out of a petty grudge. This is also excluding how awful their relationship can get on the Weird Route.

  • Adaptational Badass: The Vessels, compared to the GONERMAKER Vessel in canon. The Vessels here are mechanical creations powered by artificial human SOULs, equipped with different kinds of deadly sci-fi weaponry. In short, they're killer robots while the Discarded Vessel seemingly only has capabilities that correspond to normal Lightners.

  • Adaptational Context Change: Both this fic's Stealing Kisses and the original game's "Chapter 4: Prophecy" feature a significant Holiday Manor sequence where Noelle and Susie spend time together, only for it to be cut short by Carol Holiday intruding upon them. The Dream Come True version of the scene is merely the culmination of Noelle and Susie's recent romantic get-togethers, but it ends up on a much more sour note considering this is also when Carol grounds Noelle (and takes away her phone) and outs her as trans to Susie. Also, Kris and Red are not present for it, though they help out over the phone. Meanwhile, the canon Deltarune version is instigated as a means for Susie and the SOUL to obtain the keycode to the Shelter. While there are plenty of Susie and Noelle moments to be found, it's interspersed with the SOUL's investigation while being opposed by Kris. The whole sequence is also a Wham Episode in itself, as it reveals Kris' allegiance to the Knight and features Carol's on-screen debut.

  • Adaptational Gender Identity: First revealed in the second fic Stealing Kisses, Noelle is a trans girl.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Carol Holiday is Ambiguously Evil in the original game, either being the Knight or working with it. While she's far from perfect here, she's not outright villainous.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Despite the above, Carol still briefly weaponizes Noelle's gender identity against her while reprimanding her in the presence of Susie, which her canon counterpart never ends up doing in a similar scene (to be fair, mostly because nothing implies Noelle is trans in canon).

  • Adaptational Mundanity:
    • A twofold example with the Roaring Knight. The canon Knight has a highly otherworldy apperance, albeit implied to still be a Lightner utilizing shadow powers. Despite assuming the role of the Knight, Dream Come True does not give Kris any special abilities or even an alternate appearance for this. While DCT's Carol and Dess still have Casting a Shadow powers, their primary Dark World forms still resemble their regular selves.
    • Lailah is simply a monster with extremely high magical potency (enhanced by her Spellblade and Spellglass) who's a Physical God, as opposed to being an actual deity like what the Angel in canon is hinted to be.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Monsterkind as a whole subtly is subjected to this. In Undertale, monsters were massacred by humans solely based on nothing but fear during the Human-Monster War, and then left to rot underground for millennia. Any hatred they had towards to humanity stemmed from a justifiable position. In the world of Dream Come True, the Human-Monster War was started by monsters out of what is heavily implied to be colonial interests.

  • Adaptation Species Change: Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman are monsters instead of humans.

  • Adapted Out: Due to it being a non-playable written workNote, the Player is completely absent. "Red" (The SOUL) is introduced as a subsitute, instead being an artificial human SOUL and one of the Vessels.

  • A God Am I: The Angel suffers pretty heavily from this. Initially a mortal monster, Lailah sought out the Spellblade and Spellglass. With the power of the two artifacts, her originally benign intentions were twisted by her hubris into something darker. After being revered as a god during her banishment in the Veil, she truly sees herself as one through-and-through.

  • Alcoholic Parent: Both Carol Holiday and Susie’s father, even though they couldn’t be more different otherwise.

  • Amazon Chaser: Noelle would not mind at all if Susie used her strength on her.

  • And Show It to You: As typical for Undertale and Deltarune, it’s the SOUL instead of the actual heart.
    • Kris rips Red out of themself in order to stop them from sealing the Hospital Dark Fountain.
    • Ambition rips out Kris’s original SOUL to use to escape the bunker.

  • Bait-and-Switch: Noelle grows a pair of angel wings, has incredibly high magical potency and is reminiscent of the Angel in the Prophecy. But no, Lailah is the Angel, not her.

  • Bland-Name Product:

  • Bloodier and Gorier: As of Deltarune Chapter 4, the only instance of a character bleeding on-screen is when Susie punches the final Prophecy panel in a fit of rage at the end of the Third Sanctuary. Dream Come True features more a substantially higher amount of blood and gore as a result of physical bodily harm being given a greater focus, albeit still enough to remain in the "Teen and Up" Age Rating.

  • Big Damn Reunion: Between Noelle and Dess after seven years apart, due to Dess being trapped in the Dark World. This happens again with her friends and family in the wake of the Roaring.

  • Bookends: The first chapter of Dare to Dream has Noelle kiss Susie on the Cyber World's Ferris Wheel. The final chapter of Dream No More ends with Noelle kissing Susie on the Hometown Festival's ferris wheel.

  • Brick Joke: One with setup all the way back in canon Deltarune. Noelle finally calls Susie a "hot piece of work" when she is delirious from blood loss after being stabbed by Lailah after the Angel's Heaven is banished.

  • Canon Character All Along:
    • The Shadow Empress. Introduced as the Boss Darkner of the Lab Dark World, she is revealed to be none other than Dess Holiday herself.
    • Lailah is seemingly another Darkner, but is actually none other than the Angel from the Prophecy, making her the counterpart of said religious figure.

  • Cerebus Syndrome: While the series starts off as just a light-hearted fluffy ship fic between Noelle and Susie, it would later take a turn towards a more drama and action-oriented direction with plenty of dark themes to boot. This shift is marked by Carol Holiday's debut and subsequent grounding of Noelle, later compounded by Rudy's condition worsening. It's to the point that Dream No More is centered around the heroes trying to stop the apocalypse.

  • Canon Foreigner:
    • The Darkners from the series' original Dark Worlds are examples. Notable examples include the Chef Boss, the Monitor and the Chemical Queen, who are the Bosses of their respective Dark Worlds. Although, the Monitor is actually a Crystal Keeper while the Chemical Queen is dead.
    • The ancient Prophecy's Delta Heroes and other characters from that era, such as Lochlyn (Kris' counterpart).

  • Chekhov's Boomerang: The Crystal Dagger in Seam's shop. First glimpsed by Noelle while exploring Castle Town, she is gifted it by Seam when she returns after being grounded by Carol. This leads her to create a Dark Fountain in the Hospital using it. Its second payoff comes when Lailah uses it to create a NEO Dark Fountain, bringing about the Roaring. It's also revealed it was hers to begin with, and Lailah wields it in battle as the Angel.

  • Composite Character:
    • Kris is merely the Roaring Knight's accomplice in canon, continuing to cooperate with them out of what an unspecified promise. Dream Come True has them outright be the Roaring Knight themself, albeit with similar motivations.
    • "Red" used to be one of the Vessels, making them one of the Red SOUL and the Discarded Vessel.

  • Cool Big Sis: Dess Holiday is Noelle's tomboyish older sister, who always defended her from Kris when their pranks got a bit too extreme. Her time in the Dark World has transformed her into both a battle-scarred warrior and an iron-fisted rule.

  • Decomposite Character:
    • With the Roaring Knight being Kris in this fic, it counts as this towards... whoever it is in canon (most often speculated to be Carol or Dess).
    • While in canon only one Vessel was created (and subsequently discarded) by the Gonermaker, there's four here. And they're also Killer Robots now, too.
      • By extent, they're also one of the Player. At least two of the known Vessels are based on a specific way to play the game. Red represents a Pacifist Route player, while Ambition alludes to fulfilling a role similar to a Weird Route player if they had gotten to possess Kris instead.

  • Demiurge Archetype: During her banishment in the Veil, Lailah was worshipped as the Angel by her followers. Purported to be a benevolent deity, she turns out to be anything but upon her release. Not only is she actually a Physical God who only gained immortality via powerful magic artifacts, she tries to establish an Egopolis when she subjects many of Hometown's residents to a gilded prison (literally) and generally acts like a tyrannical spoiled brat. It's to the point where Noelle destroys the Angel statue in the Church afterwards, purely out of spite for their savior turning out to be a sham. This is Discussed by Susie and Noelle in the ending, with the former suggesting if there were any real gods out there, they'd be more like Noelle and less like Lailah.

  • Demoted to Extra: As this fic is primarily focused on Noelle and Susie's relationship, Kris and the SOUL are moved to deuteragonists rather than protagonists, and the story doesn't bother with adapting Chapter 3 by skipping straight to the morning after, as Noelle wasn't around for those events.

  • Depending on the Artist: Noelle's hairstyle varies in the art featuring her throughout the story. Sometimes it's wavy, sometimes it's curly. It makes sense, since it varies from being general Deltarune fanart used with permission to art tailor-made for the fic itself.

  • Evil Counterpart: The Angel is one to Noelle, both being female monsters with cloven hooves and blond hair. Both have high magical potency, specializing in both healing magic and a lethally-paralyzing combat spell. Both also were born into positions of privilege, and had a non-binary human as their childhood best friend. However, they differ in that Noelle genuinely wants to make the world a better place, while Lailah only wishes to transform it into an Egopolis of her own making.

  • Forced Out of the Closet: Noelle Holiday is outed as trans to Susie during a heated argument with Carol.

  • Genre Shift: Starts out as a fluffy romance, and is currently a fight for the fate of the world.

  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Red, and possibly the rest of the vessels as of Chapter 11 in Dream No More.

  • Healing Factor: Thanks to her Spellblade and Spellglass, Lailah is functionally invincible- functionally being the keyword here. While she can still suffer bodily harm, she can instantly heal off any physical damage she suffers.

  • Lighter and Softer: Downplayed in that Dream Come True still underwent Cerebus Syndrome like canon Deltarune, but it kicks in later (if both use Ch.2 as a starting point). Dare to Dream and a good chunk of Stealing Kisses (equivalent to Chapter 4) remain light-hearted, with Carol Holiday's introduction marking a turn towards angstier and eventually darker plot direction. Meanwhile, canon Deltarune has its Cerebus Syndrome kick in by the apperance of the Roaring Knight at the end of Chapter 3, with Chapter 4's Hometown segments carrying a more tense undertone and the Dark Sanctuaries dealing with issues like predestination.

  • Like Reality, Unless Noted: Dream Come True is set within its own version of the United States, and much of its world's history and present day mirrors ours. The one big difference is the existence of monsters, magic and SOULs. Numerous real-world individuals and products exist with the same name, but with "Monster" slapped at the front to show that they or the people behind them are (mainly) monsters now.

  • Magic Mirror: Lailah, the guide through the Dark World ruled by the Shadow Empress is in one of these. It’s later revealed that she was trapped in there for a reason - she’s the Angel who wants to bring about the end of the world.

  • Point of Divergence: It branches off from Deltarune Chapter 2, diverging from the Ferris Wheel scene onwards with the main plot kicking off a Broad Strokes version of Chapter 3 (well, fanmade versions at least).

  • Promoted to Playable: Noelle is given this treatment in the official Playable Epilogue. This is Downplayed, as she was already the main protagonist of the fic itself, unlike her status as a (major) supporting character and Guest-Star Party Member in canon.

  • Queer Establishing Moment: In the very first scene of the first chapter of Stealing Kisses, Noelle is shown picking up her prescription of pills from the hospital for herself. This is all but outright stated to be HRT.

  • Ruder and Cruder: While canon Deltarune restricted its language to a few "hells" and "damns" at most (courtesy of Susie), Dream Come True also features full swears like "shit" and "fuck" spread across numerous characters.

  • Secret Relationship: Susie and Noelle have this for the first two fics, before Carol walks in on them kissing.

  • Sliding Scale of Like Reality Unless Noted: While the current-day geopolitical landscape it has is much like our own, there are numerous divergences from it. First, numerous individuals are monsters instead of humans]], including at least two past US presidents. Second, the Human-Monster War, which does not seem to have a real world counterpart as it hinges on the existence of monsters. But nothing really compares to the existence of the long-bygone Age of Magic, when monsters were able to cast magic (like in Undertale) before it was sealed away.

  • Symbiotic Possession: Kris and Red have this going on. Kris considers Red one of their closest friends, and Red feels the same.

  • Trans Relationship Troubles: Averted. Susie is more than accepting of Noelle, treating her being trans as no big deal.

  • Trans Tribulations: Noelle's dysphoria is triggered by Carol's mention of the tabloids, which presumably had some not-so-nice things to say about her transition. Later on, Carol outs her to Susie during the same argument when she grounds Noelle and forces them apart. The tabloid reporters also come into play when they accuse Noelle's angel wings of being the product of HRT.

  • Villains Act, Heroes React: The events of Dream No More revolve around Lailah striving to reshape the world as the Angel, starting with Hometown. Meanwhile, Noelle and allies attempt to stop her from doing so. Tellingly, when Noelle is brought before the embodiment of the Universe, she uses its power to restore Hometown and its residents to how they were before the Roaring, but never thought to at least try and solve world hunger or climate change. This may be Justified on account of the power being too overwhelming for her to harness on a wider scale, but still.

  • What If?: Noelle kissed Susie on the Ferris Wheel?
