Fanfic / Deep Dish Nine

Go To

Deep Dish Nine is a whole slew of alternate universe fan works for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Because it has many authors, most of whom are not connected, it can appear inconsistent (in one work, for instance, Julian Bashir and Garak might be a couple whereas in another, they could be simply friends). However, there are always these rules.

  • Everyone's human: This is probably because it is set on Earth in modern times and it would be too much of a hassle coming up with a reason why a bunch of aliens are on Earth in the modern times. Consequently, they don't have traits unique to their species (for instance, Odo can no longer change form). Even though they're human, they're still called things like "Quark", "Garak", and "Odo".
  • Everyone's alive: This means that all the Dax hosts exist as siblings with the last name Dax, characters can't be killed off in the fan works, and everyone from the entire Star Trek continuum (even up to Star Trek: Enterprise) exists at the same time.
  • It's set in modern times, and on Earth: This means that characters can't go to space, technology such as tricorders and phasers can't exist, etc.
  • The space station is now three different places: People often describe this rule by saying, "Deep Space Nine is now a pizza shop", but it'd be more accurate to say that Deep Space Nine is now three different places: first is the eponymous pizza shop, where the majority of the protagonists (Sisko, Kira, O'Brien, Worf, Odo, the Daxes, and Bashir) work, which is where the universe got its name, second is Quark's bar, which is now next door to the pizza shop, and third is the apartment building where everyone lives.

Tropes found in the works

  • Abled in the Adaptation: In one of the stories, Geordi is nearsighted (or possibly has astigmatism) instead of blind.
  • Adaptational Job Change:
    • Bashir is now a medical student instead of a proper doctor.
    • Sisko, Kira, and Jadzia Dax are now chefs instead of a captain/commander, first officer, and scientist respectively.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the story Ace, Odo is asexual (as opposed to in the series where he's seen being attracted to women occasionally).
  • Adaptation Species Change: All the aliens are now humans.
  • Aerith and Bob: Even though everybody's human, they still have their original names, so "Benjamin Sisko" still hangs out with "Odo".
  • Alternate Universe Fic: All of the fan works are set in an alternate universe where everyone is a normal modern-day human.
  • Crack Fic: Some aspects of the universe are a bit surreal, such as the humans having alien names.
  • Dark Fic: Rewiring changes Garak's addiction to a wire to a drug addiction and plays his symptoms up as a lot worse.
  • Out Sick: Leeta's job is now substituting for any of the pizza shop staff if they're sick.
  • Related in the Adaptation: The Dax hosts are now all siblings.
  • Slash Fic: Some of them ship Garak and Bashir.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: One of the rules of the AU is that everybody lives, so that means that Dax's past hosts, Ziyal, etc, are still alive despite dying canonically.
  • Suicide by Pills: Discussed in the story "Rewiring", where Garak, who is suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms, looks at some sleeping pills. He notes that if he took one or two, he would sleep, and if he took all of them, he would die, and he sees both as viable options. Eventually, however, he decides to do neither and flushes them instead.
