Dangan Ronpa: Avenging Despair is an ongoing fanfiction created by the user Silverst0ne0656 and is inspired by the visual novel series Danganronpa. The story follows an original cast of sixteen students, who have been trapped in a mysterious summer resort by Monokuma, forced to participate in 'The Holidays of Mutual Killing'. The only way to escape is by killing someone and getting away with the crime. The standard formula

The story is written in a script format inspired by Dangan Ronpa: Legacy of Despair. This fanfic mimics the mechanics of the original visual novel series and is told from the perspective of Hayato Seiki, the Ultimate Author.

There are major spoilers for all three of the mainline games: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.

Beware, spoilers may be unmarked

This Danganronpa fanfic contains examples of:

  • Anyone Can Die: Of course.
  • Asshole Victim: Kyia and Rina each made an attempt on the person who ultimately killed them. Though in Kyia's situation it was understandable as Fukumi attacked and restrained Kyia first.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Fukami and Yoshi are examples of this when revealed to be the blackened. The former turns verbally abusive and condescending towards Hayato, the latter reveals themselves to be far more calculating and distrustful than first presented.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: The executions this time around have been particularly brutal.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Wouldn't be a Dangan Ronpa fanfic without it.
  • Dwindling Party: True to Dangan Ronpa, as the story progresses, more students die.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: There are a few students who this applies to.
    • Although done intentionally, Raiko makes it a point to play the role of the villain in the group, often antagonising whomever she pleases. This is an important plot point when Raiko chooses not to save Kyia, leading to both Kyia and Fukami's death. She was also able to drug Oriana and manipulate Yoshi into murder.
    • Some of the students take this issue into their own hands in the in-game chapter three, trapping Raiko in a restraint chair, in the isolation unit. It should be noted that both Tadao and Yoko, who trapped Raiko were killed in the in-game chapter three.
    • Yoshi possibly fits this, as the other students are often dismayed as his sense of humour and general timing.
  • Hot-Blooded: Kenji. And in a similar vein, Rina and Yoko, who both have an intense argument with each other. Hikari is also known to be quite passionate.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Fusume, Reijiro, Raiko and Hikari are all competent investigators in their own right, often contributing signficantly in the general investigations.
  • First-Name Basis: Most of the students address each other using their given names. Fukami and Jessie are the exceptions to this. Hayato lampshades this stylistic choice, much to the annoyance of Fukami and Jessie.
    • Fukami addresses the other students by their family name and the Japanese honorific -san,
    • Jessie addresses the other students by their given name and the Japanese honorifics -kun for male students and -chan for female students.
  • Jerkass: Monokuma plays the main antagonist, so this is to be expected.
    • This also applies to Raiko who takes great pleasure in making the other students uncomfortable
    • Can also be applied to Reijiro, Rina, Kenji and Yoko, although all four of them make their own attempt to change this as the story progresses.
  • Mood Whiplash: Occurs in in-game chapter one, when the students are watching Yoshi's circus show, Monokuma tampers with the stage, causing it to collapse and bring a premature end to the show. Further exacerbated when the students discover Kyia had been murdered.
  • Omniglot: Jessie Shadow as the Ultimate Translator often speaks in different languages when conversing with the other students.
  • The Stoic: Most of the time Fusume and Reijiro can be described as such.
  • Shrinking Violet: Oriana is most definitely this. Shinto can also be presented this way when being berated by Yoko.
  • Strictly Formula: This fanfic shares a lot of similarities with the canon story.
    • General: Rina and Yoko who take part in a rebuttal showdown against Hayato in the in-game chapter 1 and 2 respectively, each becomes the victim in the following in-game chapter.
    • Chapter 1: A character who was set up to have an important role in the story is killed off early. Additionally the first murder attempt is not successful at killing the original target, though this is subverted, when the murder is done in 'self defence'.
    • Chapter 2: A murder takes place and the culprit's tragic/dark backstory serves as the motive for the kill.
      • One of the students is revealed to have a dangerous personality trait and or alter ego to them that ends up being revealed in the class trial. More often than not this person and their newfound identity is not the culprit, thus posing a threat to the surviving students going forward.
    • Chapter 3: This time a double murder takes place with one of the victims being the comic relief ..
      • It can be argued that one of the student had their character arc cut prematurely.
      • The motive this time took effect on everyone's physical and mental capacities.
