Go To

Code Geass: Julius of the Empire is a Code Geass fanfiction story by ShinKir0, in which the character of Julius Kingsley from Code Geass: Akito the Exiled ( a brainwashed Lelouch) is in fact the twin brother of Lelouch and the 12th Prince of the Holy Britannian Empire, who was kept in the Homeland when Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan. He has grown up mourning the deaths of his mother and siblings and knows just who to blame, plans to avenge them.

The story starts off with Julius being sent to handle the troubles with Euro Britannia (as in Code Geass: Akito the Exiled) but then the mysterious rebel leader Zero arises in Area 11, announcing the murder of the 3rd Prince Clovis la Britannia, Viceroy of Area 11. Enraged at the thought of a third sibling being lost to the Elevens, Julius turns his gaze towards Zero and his 'Order of the Black Knights', fully intent on his vengeance...

This fanfiction contains examples of:

  • Aggressive Negotiations: Julius is a strong believer in this form of politics, preferring the direct approach over the scheming and conniving of his elder brother Schneizel.
  • Anti-Villain: Julius may be the protagonist of this story, but he is a direct agent of the Big Bad Emperor Charles, and represents the interests of the cruel and oppressive Britannian Empire. On top of that, he resorts to such over-the-top measures and shows such a callous disregard for human life that he comes very close to becoming a Villain Protagonist.
  • Attention Whore: Much like his twin brother, Julius shows a compulsive need to be at the centre of attention, whether he is seen as good or evil.
  • Ax-Crazy: Julius enjoys and even actively cultivates this image within Britannian society, as the fear of others that he is this and a Sadist works to his advantage. However, he displays annoyance when Leila Malcal recognises his name not by his royalty, but as "The monster of the imperial family..."
  • Badass Boast: Julius makes a few, with the standout from the first chapter, A Demon's Stir, "When the shadow of war settles there will be only one truth. I, Julius vi Britannia, will have obliterated Britannia's enemies! Death to all our fatherland's enemies! All hail Britannia!" The speech this is derived from also invokes War Is Glorious.
  • Bad Boss: Averted - Julius is polite and courteous to his servants and household, and even insists that they join him for meals, although this derives from his fear of being alone in Aries Villa for long stretches of time, as he suffers flashbacks of the night of his mother's murder and the exile and 'death' of Lelouch and Nunnally.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Par for the course with Britannian Royalty.
  • Cain and Abel: Lelouch believes that Julius is Cain and he and Nunnally are Abel, arising from his belief that Julius willingly abandoned them after their exile, and seeing him make grand speeches and laughing on international television only further cement this belief. It only gets worse when Clovis tells Lelouch to go to Julius for answers on Marianne's murder, listing him alongside Schneizel and Cornelia. Lelouch's immediate response is a furious, "That bastard was at the heart of this?!" However, in Julius' flashbacks he remarks on how Lelouch 'rejected' him after their mother's murder and 'wouldn't listen', which implies that if anything, Lelouch is Cain in this scenario. This can be explained with Lelouch suffering from Antagonist in Mourning and Julius technically playing the part of the Evil Twin.
  • The Chessmaster: Nowhere near on a par with Lelouch, but after Cornelia brought home a charred piece of Lelouch's prized chessboard Julius became obsessed with the game for a time as a way of being close to his 'lost' brother, and became fairly skilled.
  • Co-Dragons: Julius shares the role with his other prominent siblings, Schneizel, Cornelia and Clovis, as their father's seconds-in-command. They play the parts of The Man in Front of the Man and Mouth of Sauron, representing Emperor Charles and his interests across the globe.
  • Color Motif: Black and purple are Julius' personal colours, just as they are for Lelouch. However, in keeping with the 'twin' theme, Julius' imperial robes have an inverted colour scheme to Lelouch's Zero outfit - where the Zero outfit focuses on dark purple with black highlights, Julius' clothing is almost entirely black, with a few purple highlights such as the jewellery hanging from his extravagant eyepatch.
  • Comes Great Responsibility: Subverted. While Julius does not uphold this in the sense of moral responsibility he seems to be of the opinion that those with power have the responsibility to use that power, showing disdain for those who laze around and grow fat on their wealth and influence.
  • Crowd Chant: After Julius gives his War Is Glorious speech - "All hail Britannia!"
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: How Julius' Geass works - he can lock someone up within their mind, trapping them with their greatest fears. This leads to them committing suicide to escape the sheer terror in a number of gruesome ways. The fates of Julius' victims also invoke Bloody Horror, Nothing Is Scarier, Gaslighting, Psychological Horror and Nightmare Fuel.
  • Don't Split Us Up: Julius begged his father not to exile Lelouch and Nunnally, but in vain. The result is the belief that they are both dead and Lelouch's resentment of Julius remaining within the relative comfort of imperial safety boiling over into full-blown hatred, believing that Julius abandoned them to almost-certain death during the Britannian Invasion and never cared enough to travel to Area 11 to search.
  • The Dreaded: Julius has become this both within Britannia and without, gaining the nickname the Homicide Prince. This is due to his reputation for publicly executing those who cross him, combined with his notorious temper.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Julius is playing in the field with Lelouch and Nunnally when their mother and Lelouch warn Julius and Nunnally to be more careful in case they get themselves hurt. Cut to a grown-up Julius marching out to give a public speech regarding himself being granted full power over the war with the EU, boasting of the sheer might and overwhelming power of the Britannian Military and how he will crush the enemy and stomp upon them, declaring that, "All their people will wither before my feet and cower at the mention of my name!" Also doubles for a Downer Beginning when you consider that the time they spent chasing each other around the field was one of their last happy memories together before Marianne is murdered, Lelouch and Nunnally are exiled, Julius believes his siblings are dead and falls into madness and Lelouch grows up to feel nothing more than hatred towards Julius for 'abandoning' them.
  • Evil Laugh / Laughing Mad: Julius gives quite a few laughs throughout the story which terrify the people around him, such as
    • the end of chapter 1, A Demon's Stir - after using his Geass to kill a group of noblemen for attempting to assassinate him
    • near the end of chapter 6, The Prince's Malice - after betraying his promise to allow the cowardly officers to flee and bombarding them with bombs instead.
    • the end of chapter 6, The Prince's Malice - after announcing his rule over Euro Britannia
    • early on in chapter 7, Fear and Control - while riding through the streets in public in a limousine, enjoying the people cheering for him. He calls out, "That's right, peasants! Worship me and sing my name!"
    • early on in chapter 8, One Step Closer - while he beats Gaudefroy half to death with his ceremonial sceptre and beheads him with Gaudefroy's own sword.
    • almost midway through chapter 8, One Step Closer - during the triple funeral being held for his mother and siblings, knowing who is to blame for it all but being unable to find him.
  • Evil Wears Black: Julius is clad in black robes and a black cloak, with gold designs and an ornate black eyepatch with purple jewellery dangling from it.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Julius' eyepatch is used to hide any sign that he is imbued with the powers of a Geass user.
  • Fanservice: In chapter 8, One Step Closer - Julius and Nonette have a stripping contest to see who chickens out first. Julius loses, telling Nonette to stop undressing, thinking it inappropriate for him to look upon the naked body of someone he is not in love with.
  • Fatal Flaw: Julius finds it impossibly difficult to keep control over his Anger and Wrath as shown in
    • near the end of chapter 4, The Divided Wyvern - when he is dissatisfied with his reception to Euro Britannia, and proceeds to terrify his receiver to his knees.
    • late-midway through chapter 6, The Prince's Malice - when he gets angry with newly-captured Akito's cheeky attitude and remarks that the only reason he hasn't already beaten Akito's face into the ground is that he's in a good mood.
    • midway through chapter 7, Fear and Control - when imprisons Duke Velaines on a trumped-up charge of treason, when the true crime was insubordination.
    • early on in chapter 8, One Step Closer - when he beats Gaudefroy half to death with his ceremonial sceptre and beheads him with Gaudefroy's own sword.
    • late in chapter 8, One Step Closer - when he almost attacks Nonette for making fun of him for losing their stripping contest, even thinking to himself that he is liable to murder her sometime soon. Considering his mindset, he's only half-joking.
    • near the end of chapter 9, Turning Tides - when he suffers a mental breakdown hearing about Clovis' murder by 'an Eleven', just like Lelouch and Nunnally are believed to have died. Realising that three of his siblings, two of whom he loved deeply, have been murdered by the same group of people in the same area he lashes out, destroying a vase, screams in fury and swears vengeance.
  • Foregone Victory: How Julius sees his war with the EU. And his hunt for Zero.
  • Freudian Excuse: Julius' psychological issues (laughing fits, lack of empathy and uncontrollable fits of anger and petty vengeance) can be traced directly to 'knowing' that Charles had a hand in Marianne's murder, split him from his siblings and sent them to the other side of the world, then ordered a military invasion to conquer the country his siblings resided in, presumably causing their deaths and leaving him with nothing but two empty graves a charred fragment from Lelouch's prized chessboard. It's no wonder he flips when Zero kills Clovis in the exact same country he blames for Lelouch and Nunnally's 'deaths'.
  • Hates Being Alone: In Aries Villa, at least. If Julius is alone with his thoughts for too long in there he suffers flashbacks to his childhood, when he still had Marianne, Lelouch and Nunnally. The memories are painful, so he insists upon company at meals etc.
  • High Collar of Doom: As if the speech about how War Is Glorious and he was going to make his enemies "wither before my feet and cower at the mention of my name!" wasn't evidence enough that Julius was going to bring a ton of misfortune upon the people around him.
  • Innocence Lost: Explicitly discussed between Cornelia and Euphemia early on in chapter 2, Setting Off to Where A Ghost Roams, and shown in great detail in subsequent chapters, especially chapter 8, One Step Closer, at the triple funeral for his mother and siblings.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: At the end of the first chapter, A Demon's Stir - when some nobles attempt to assassinate him and he surrenders only to get close enough to use his Geass.
  • Large Ham: Julius has positively Lelouch levels of FABULOUS when he gets his blood up. Just read his opening speech, go on.
  • Manipulative Bastard: It runs in the family. Britannian royalty, jeez.
  • Meaningful Appearance / Color-Coded Characters: Julius being Lelouch's identical twin and sharing a similar yet inverted colour scheme point to his similar-yet-opposite views on his relationship with his siblings when compared to Lelouch's views. Julius believes that Lelouch and Nunnally are dead, and mourns them so deeply he cannot be alone in his home for too long. Lelouch, on the other hand, believes that Julius abandoned him and Nunnally, and has grown so hateful of his twin that he refuses to allow Nunnally to speak of him. On top of that, purple symbolises royalty, elegance, sophistication, wealth and power, while black symbolises power, elegance, formality, death, evil, mystery, strength and authority. All of these are traits which can be found in Julius. Additionally, black is the colour of grief and suffering, which fits with Julius' driving motivation - revenge for the murders of his mother and siblings.
  • Nothing Can Stop Us Now!: Julius had been certain his plan had gone off without a hitch, until Leila exposed his lies on a public broadcast halfway through chapter 9, Turning Tides.
  • Princeling Rivalry: Subverted. Not only is the rivalry completely one-sided, but it is not about competing for the throne. The problem is that Lelouch believes that Julius abandoned him and Nunnally to be murdered in the Britannian Invasion and did not care enough to check if they were alive or dead (which is false, judging by Julius' emotional breakdown when Cornelia returns from Japan with nothing but a charred fragment of Lelouch's prized chessboard, and subsequent fit of laughter at the triple-funeral, at which there are two empty graves.
  • Public Execution: Julius is very fond of this method of punishment. This attitude, combined with his anger issues and petty nature, have caused him to be given the nickname, the Homicide Prince and making him The Dreaded amongst the Britannian forces, to the point that people hear his name and immediately think Homicide Prince. It is both a blessing and a curse for him.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Purple is one of Julius' symbolic colours. Purple symbolises royalty, elegance, sophistication, wealth and power.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Julius shares Lelouch's pale skin and black hair.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Julius' eye goes red he is using his Geass on a victim.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Julius feels that his life for the past seven years has been preparation for one such Rampage, waiting for the chance to take vengeance for the murders of his mother and siblings.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Julius seems to take the view that if one has power then they have the responsibility to exercise their form of power, be it money, influence or royal rank. He himself becomes the designated 'Emperor of Euro Britannia' within a few days and never stops taking action to fulfil his goals and ambitions; expand Britannia's power, and avenge his murdered family.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Subverted. Resentment over Julius getting to live the royal life while he and Nunnally had to scrape to survive with Suzaku in an obliterated warzone only makes up a small part of Lelouch's hatred for his brother. The majority of it is the belief that Julius abandoned them to death and destruction and never looked back.
  • Superpower Lottery: The Geass, which differs from user to user. Julius' Geass is to utterly trap something within their worst fears, which inevitably leads to the victim committing suicide to escape the psychological torture.
  • These Hands Have Killed / My God, What Have I Done?: Averted. In stark contrast to Lelouch, who initially was shocked and horrified at the corpses of the officers he killed, and suffered guilt and physical illness as a result of all the killing he did in the first three episodes, Julius responds to his first kill with is curiosity. "Did I do that?" From that point on he shows no problem with killing.
  • Warrior Prince / The Strategist: Julius fights in the field with his soldiers and draws up battle plans and strategies. However, his strengths lie with the actual fighting, in contrast to the genius strategist/average devicer Lelouch.
  • We Used to Be Friends: How Lelouch sees his relationship with his brother Julius. Lelouch thinks that Julius betrayed him and Nunnally and abandoned them to the destroyed, wartorn nation of Japan to be killed, and feels that such a betrayal is sufficient that Lelouch not only refuses to discuss him with Nunnally, preferring to pretend as though it were Julius that were 'dead' and not them, but he also [[spoilers: genuinely desires to kill him, marking him as 'number two' behind the Emperor]].
  • Villainous Vow: Julius' proclamation to crush the EU under his feet and make its people submit to Britannia's will.
    • Lelouch's vow to kill Julius for the crime of 'abandoning' him and Nunnally.
  • Young Conqueror: 17-year-old Julius takes over Euro Britannia and crowns himself Emperor in the space of a few days.
