Clone Story is a Naruto fanfiction by DehNutCase.

It follows the perspective of one of the clones summoned on the night of the Forbidden Scroll Heist. Having been summoned too far away to get in on any of the action, instead of dispelling, the clone instead decides to just…stick around and see what happens.

After getting the Old Man to set something up, the clone takes on the identity of Hikari Rekka. What follows is a slightly AU semi-serious crack fic.

List of tropes appearing in Clone Story

  • Accidental Pervert: Hikari worries her innocent curiosity over recognizing, and later being gifted, a certain little book might have given Kurenai a tainted image of her. It didn't take her long to get rid of the thing.
I turned on one of the burners on the stove, and set the book on fire, frowning as I watched the orange cover change from the bright, vivid color, to the dead, grey color of ashes. Hinata gave me a puzzled expression, but was too polite to ask anything.
Hikari: "I don't want to talk about it."

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Hikari seemingly likes ruffling Naruto's hair.

  • Anger Born of Worry: From Sasuke of all people, after he attacked Naruto while under the influence of the curse mark in the Forest of Death. Naruto's flippant reassurance that everything is alright afterwards only annoyed him further.

  • Bears Are Bad News: During the Chunin Exams, Hikari, while acting as an assistant to Anko, took a detour to punch a bear. Later on, Anko ends up punching every bear in sight. The bears wind up so enraged that the remaining Genin (who the bears are as strong as) have no choice but to retreat back to the tower in the forest for safety.

  • Begin with a Finisher: Hikari's first move during her encounter with Orochimaru is to spawn shuriken inside of his heart. It gets shrugged off.

  • Blank Stare: Hikari's reaction when Naruto asks who she is in their first meeting. Granted, he didn't know a clone was still wandering around and she had just tricked him into believing she ate all his ramen, so his mind was elsewhere.

  • Collectible Card Game: Kabuto's Ninja Info Cards get mistaken as a trading card game he's created based on everyone. He is less than amused by this misunderstanding.

  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Averted. Even after she's been there for months and months, Hikari still refers to Naruto as "boss", like all his other shadow clones. Neither one minds it, though she'll call him by his name when they're around other people, to keep up appearances.

  • Eccentric Mentor: Save for Kurenai and Iruka, this is pretty much anyone with a headband and something to teach.

  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: No, really, this happens to be a story about a clone, believe it or not.

  • First-Person Perspective: Apart from a brief interlude in one chapter, everything is told from Hikari, Naruto's clone's, perspective.

  • Glass Cannon: As is the flaw of all shadow clones, one good, clean hit and they're out. Hikari has to find workarounds, like dodging and creating copies during fights so she can swap consciousness or use a Replacement Jutsu to avoid getting killed for real.

  • Hearing Voices: As of the most recent chapters, Hikari seems to be developing quite the conversation partner in her head. Who this might be is currently unknown.

  • Idiot Hero: Downplayed. Naruto is just as much of a knucklehead as he is in canon, but with more insight into his thought process and an added willingness to learn new things, he comes across as less dimwitted than he might have seemed in the show.

  • Intergenerational Friendship: Over time, things seem to have gone this way for Anko and Hikari.

  • Lack of Empathy: Hikari displays a startling absence of it for anyone not named Naruto. While she's friendly enough with people, she doesn't seem to care a great deal about most of them.

  • Lap Pillow: Naruto gave one to Hikari after the latter collapsed to sort through new memories.
    Hikari: "Hey, boss."
    Naruto: "Yeah?"
Hikari: "Why is my head in your lap?"
I asked as I stared up at him, while he's absently playing with my hair.
Naruto: "It seemed like the appropriate thing to do at the time."
    Hikari: "Okay."

  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: From time to time, if not breaking it outright.

  • Make a Wish: Naruto does this at a festival they visit, Hikari doesn't. Her reasoning is that there's nothing to wish for that can or should happen that would be logically possible, and anything else she can do on her own.

  • Misplaced Retribution: After Naruto seemingly dies protecting Sasuke in the Land of Waves, Hikari tells him afterwards that if he ever gets killed sacrificing himself like that to save someone else, she'll kill the person he saved.

  • Morality Chain: Hikari's resentful of the Hidden Leaf Village and a lot of dark thoughts run their course through her mind. She tries to brush aside most of it for Naruto's sake but occasionally she'll remind him that they don't always see eye to eye on certain topics.

  • My Skull Runneth Over: While they already experienced minor issues from clone memory backlash, Hikari discovers in the library that taking on such an exceeding amount of memories could result in significant mental trauma, if not the death of the original. And this is after she's collected three months worth of memories.

  • Not Afraid to Die: As a being that's normally dispelled not long after creation, Hikari doesn't have any hang-ups with the idea of "dying". Her nonchalance is around even during times where she's almost gotten herself "killed".
    • She eventually puts more care into not spontaneously popping once she realizes the negative impact it could have on Naruto's wellbeing.

  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At one point, Hikari tries to make her clone eat a rock as part of a personal experiment.

  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: At the start of story, Naruto's clone ends up stuck in a form that greatly resembles his Sexy Jutsu transformation, sans the cheek marks. Only three people guess who that might be.

  • Socially Awkward Hero: Hikari wonders if Sasuke might be this, but it doesn't stop her from considering him a jerk either way.

  • Something We Forgot: How this story kicked off. A Naruto clone with a few extra quirks got left during the Mizuki fight.

  • Swap Teleportation: Hikari can summon clones within a certain range and switch places with them.

  • The Prankster: Assuming a new identity hasn't diminished Hikari's love of pranking any, at all.

  • Undying Loyalty: Hikari to Naruto. She'll die for him, kill for him and amusedly thought of him as "her Hokage".

  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Trying to seriously harm Naruto won't do wonders for your longevity as long as Hikari is nearby.

  • Wham Episode: The beginning of chapter 21, where Orochimaru breaks into the Leaf's hospital and successfully transfers his soul to Sasuke's body.
