Fanfic / Behold! The Vanguard!

Go To

There are many superhero teams in the Core Timeline. But not every superhero team is what they seem to be. Take the Vanguard and their backers, Nightstone Enterprises. There's much more to them that meets the eye at first glance...

Behold! The Vanguard!, is part of the Coreline Shared Universe.

Currently under construction. Please add tropes as you see them!

This story has the following Tropes:

  • Clones Are People, Too: Averted, Sonotax' Rei is hated by Giganta Asuka, even calling her a doll, and Sonotax says he keeps her around because she is a doll.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Alexander Sotonax, the head of Nightstone Enterprises, also known as Thailog. His plans for the Core Timeline involve keeping a small army of superpowered psychopaths at his beck and call, to give a pretty big example.
  • Deck of Wild Cards: Discussed. Sonotax' thoughts make it clear that he thinks all of the Vanguard are willing to betray him, so further stories show that he is not adverse to keeping very lethal countermeasures at hand to make sure they will remain compliant.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Giganta Asuka and Black Mari are sadistic monsters, but they're genuinely in love with each and not afraid to show it.
  • Evil Hero: The entirety of the Vanguard is this Trope. It's very hard to find a line throughout the story that does not involves some kind of Kick the Dog quip, and that is just what they talk about. Their actions are much more horrible.
  • Evil Laugh: When Thailog makes his appearance in the story's epilogue, he cements he is a very proud Card-Carrying Villain by unleashing one of these.
  • Kick the Dog: Pretty much every line said by the Vanguard throughout this story is insulting other people and/or calling them gullible, a barely-contained desire to kill them because they hate them that much (even if it's just some random passerby that happened to annoy them), and a casual description of various atrocities.
  • Second Super-Identity: The overwhelming majority of the Vanguard have (at least) two super-identities. One of them is for playing the hero while doing their "official" jobs as members of the Vanguard. The other is the villain identity. In addition, many Vanguard members also disguise themselves as another person. For example, Ritsuko/Titania goes out disguised as a Misato alt in order to avoid the suspicion that might result of having two Ritsukos with a very similar power set running around when they don't often encounter each other.
