Ashes and Moonlightis written by Anonymous and a crossover between Mo Dao Zu Shi and Heaven Official’s Blessing: Tian Guan Ci Fu.

For a long time, what separated gods and demons was defined only by where they went: up or down. OR not for the first time Wei Wuxian does the impossible and becomes a type of hybrid between god and ghost. This fic goes into a lot of Worldbuilding and quickly spirls into a AU as it deals with the Yiling Patriarch newfound godly powers and all the changes that come with it.

Tropes in Ashes and Moonlight:

  • Adaptational Badass: Even back when the Yiling Patriarch was mortal, he was no laughing matter as he easily was a One-Man Army with his Necromancy and as a result, he was feared across all the Sects for his abilities. Something that was originally considered unthinkable and heresy, mind you. However, after he ascended into Hybrid and was declared a Devastation by the Gods, he grew to be more powerful then his canon-self since he was now immortal, had a even greater reserve of raw power, and all the time in the world to study his craft to his hearts content now.
  • Damage Control: Lan Wangji assigned Shizui and Jingyi this role to help and support Jin Rulan in his determination to change Heaven little by little after finding out how stagnant and corrupt it is. Unsurprisingly, the gods are hardly happy with the reforms he's trying to bring about which is why Shizui and Jingyi often have to meditate between him and the other gods toes he often steps on.
  • Forgetful Jones: Downplayed when it comes to Wei Wuxian who always had a bad memory and the fact that he's now a immortal hybrid doesn't help matters in the least. He even came close to not recognizing who Xie Lian was after meeting him briefly on his travels after promising Hua Cheng he'd keep an eye out for him. Thankfully, he remembered not to long after the exiled God left and was able to inform Hua Cheng on his general whereabouts.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • As directly stated by Xie Lian, the fact that Wei Wuxian is a unpredictable hybrid that primarily uses demonic cultivation isn't the only reason the gods despise his existence. He's well known for his mastery at playing the dizi after all, enough so even the musical gods themselves are humbled by his talent with the instrument. Even made worse by the fact that they were surpassed by someone who can raise the dead with it.
    • Ever since Yiling Laozu was labeled a Devastation by the gods, Green Qi Rong was kicked from his Calamity level threat status and... hasn't taken the news well to say to the least. Not only has he gained a lasting grudge against the Patriarch but decided to try to copy his technique out of jealousy and rage.
  • Mad Scientist: Wei Wuxian has been described as this on multiple occasions and for good reason too. Now, he's got immortality, he has all the time in the world to pick apart his craft and create all kinds of useful and just plain weird inventions.
  • Odd Friendship: There's no better example then the one between Hua Cheng and Wei Wuxian. Those two get along surprisingly well personality wise since Wei Wuxian is someone who cares very little for politics and doesn't have any ambitions outside of keeping his people safe along with enjoying research into demonic cultivation. Hua Cheng, on the other hand, is quick to acknowledge his genuis and doesn't hesitate to take advantage of the fact that the Yiling Patriarch is a mad scientist with a penchant of creating incredibly useful inventions. After meeting, in fact, they soon become trade partners and are probably the closest thing to friends the two of them will possess, not that they'd ever admit it.
