Fanfic / A Certain Infinite Possibility

Go To

Everything was normal in the life of a misfortunate Touma Kamijou. He was low on cash, Biri-Biri was zapping him for no apparent reason, and he was pulled into another magical crusade with Stiyl Magnus. Again, all very normal. But when they rescue a mysterious teenager who can freely use both Magic and Science Side abilities, well . . . things don't seem so normal anymore. A chain of events is set off which places Touma in the crosshairs of an ancient group with goals and abilities that threaten to throw the world into chaos.

Magic and Science collide in ways no one thought possible.

A Certain Infinite Possibility by Darkbetrayer is an Alternate Universe fic of A Certain Magical Index that takes canon off the rails and weaves a conflict that includes characters from its various spin-offs, and taking them deep into the Magic Side. Touma and his allies are tested like never before, faced with powers beyond their comprehension, and consequences more personal than they are prepared for.

This may be one illusion Touma can't shatter.

WARNING - spoiler tags are lifted for events resolved before chapter 108.

It has a sidestory written by bitbitbit11 called A Certain After School Secret which details the adventures of Touma's friends Motoharu Tsuchimikado and Pierce Aogami.

Tropes present in A Certain Infinite Possibility:

  • Abled in the Adaptation:
    • After meeting Touma way before the canon events of the Battle Royal Arc, Shizuri doesn't end up fighting Shiage and gaining crippling injuries where prosthesis are needed.
    • Fiamma of the Right doesn't lose his right arm to Aleister Crowley, since the Fallen are the bigger threat in this fic. As such, the wickedest man in the world simply allows Carissa to take care of Fiamma.
  • Accidental Pervert: Touma just so happens to hide in a locker room during his escape from Tokiwadai in chapter 38. And Mitsuko just so happens to start changing there right afterward. Quickly nullified wind attacks soon ensue. Fortunately, they made up of chapter 65. This happens to him many, many times throughout the story.
    • In chapter 92, Touma barges into the tent shared by Lessar and Leivinia when they're both in a state of severe undress, because Imagine Breaker negated the privacy-protection spell.
  • Action Survivor: All of the members of the Kamijou Faction fall into this, some more than others.
  • Actor Allusion: When looking for dolls that look similar to them to break a spell from Eve, Touma and his friends choose a figure of Ken Kaneki to represent Accelerator. Austin Tindle voices both Kaneki and Accelerator in the English Dub of their respective series.
  • Adaptational Badass: Multiple characters throughout the work:
    • Touma. He gains the ability to extend the reach of Imagine Breaker away from his body in the form of a flash of light for an instant, letting him negate attacks that would otherwise be too wide or too fast for him to do so effectively. Though, there is a lapse of two seconds afterward where he cannot negate anything. Also, he finally learns to speak English properly.
    • Mikoto. After being pushed to her limits against Juliet she gains the ability to access her Level 6 Shift form by connecting to MISAKA Network without outside influence.
    • Shizuri. After feeling like she is falling behind the other Level 5s (when Misaki replaces her as the Number 4), she undergoes experiments to increase her power with great risk to herself and manages to ascend past Level 5 achieving a different form with help from Rikou's ability to control AIM fields.
    • Misaki. After inadvertently absorbing Telesma from English knights she took control of, she temporarily ascends past Level 5. She also begins exercising at Touma's insistence.
    • Teitoku. He learns of magic and gains the ability to use it through his Dark Matter clones. This enables him to briefly hold his own against Shizuri, even when she has ascended past Level 5. He also manages to ascend by the end of that battle, but then Touma's dragons happen and he is annihilated in a few seconds.
    • Ruiko. With help from Jason, she jumps from being a Level 0 to Level 2 in a few weeks. And Jason hints she can go even further, all the way up to Level 5. She also discovers that she has a different power altogether, related to miracles, allowing her to purify the resurrected Saint Peter with words alone. By chapter 122, there are many groups of magicians that seek her because of this, believing her to be the next Saint.
    • Gunha. He learns how to utilize ether in his attacks.
    • Fiamma. After humiliating defeat from the hands of Adam, he started pulling his own weight even more than normally. As a result, his flaming sword and light beam attacks from Holy Right, that in canon only slowed Touma down, here are slowly burning through Kamijou's right hand.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Misaki Shokuhou appears before her debut in NT 7, helping Touma and his friends to defeat Sloth while Touma fully regains the ability to remember Misaki.
    • Misaka Worst is already living with Accelerator and Last Order at the start of the story, where she doesn't appear in canon until the events of World War III.
    • In canon, ITEM is only introduced during the Battle Royal Arc (OT 15) in the Index storyline. Here, they (minus Shiage) appear after the events of the Skill-Out Uprising Arc and getting involved with the Kamijou Faction.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Since Shizuri doesn't end up causing the downfall of ITEM due to her insane perfectionist attitude, Shiage Hamazura doesn't become the Spanner in the Works to Aleister's plans. But he's still the "one who defines finality" when going up against dangerous foes.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Considering the Kamijou Faction developing closer bonds and other characters making an early appearance, then expect this for everyone.
    • While Accelerator has a profound respect for Touma in canon, it should be noted that they never "actually" became friends, and sometimes only meet up when having their own respective adventures. Here, the two of them get to know each other further after Accelerator transferred to Touma's high school, and on two separate events, does regard the other as a friend.
    • Touma meeting ITEM way before the events of the Battle Royal Arc in Index storyline (as they don't happen in October here), which not only prevented Shizuri from going off the deep end and becoming a "hideous monster", along with Frenda from betraying ITEM, which also results in her death; but they both develop romantic feelings for him and are slowly changing for the better.
    • Both Touma and Misaki once shared a close friendship until the events of Deadlock causes the former to develop retro- and anterograde amnesia specifically for the latter, which went unresolved for the entirety of New Testament. Here, Touma regains the ability to remember Misaki after being affected by Sloth's sin mark and Heaven Chancellor removing certain clots in his brain, allowing the two to slowly rekindle their once forgotten bond.
      • On that note, Touma also becomes closer to both Mikoto and Ruiko as well. With Mikoto, she becomes much more open with her feelings towards Touma without getting all tsun-tsun, and Ruiko's becoming more confident in her abilities to help those in need. By the time of chapter 122, Touma is in a polyamorous relationship with all three of them.
  • Affably Evil: Eve. She is playful, cheerful, social, an excellent conversationalist, enjoys cakes, and is usually seen with a great big smile on her face. She is generally cordial with her enemies and doesn't attack anyone who hasn't attacked her first. She is also planning to kill God, is willing to kill anyone who stands in her way, and hates "those born with power" like the Saints and the Gemstones.
  • Alternate Continuity: Fic starts at March 31st of the next year after events of Raildex, but several events before are different:
    • To begin with, canon flow of events stops at Skill-Out Uprising for A Certain Magical Index, Daihasei Arc for A Certain Scientific Railgun and Necromancer Arc for A Certain Scientific Accelerator.
    • Academy City school years use the American system (September - June), not the Japanese one (April - March).
    • There is seemingly only one Tokiwadai dormitory, the one in the School Garden.
    • School Garden allows male students to enter; they are just forbidden from entering the school grounds.
    • The author stated that Ritoku Komaba has never been Fremea's caretaker. This role seems to be given to Hanzou, with Shiage occasionally helping. Also, in this timeline, Fremea's existence is known to all of ITEM from the beginning.
    • Kazari and Ruiko are roommates.
    • Misaki does not know about Touma's lost memories until chapter 57.
    • Ayu Mitsuari attacks Misaki much earlier, back in August of the previous year, before Touma receives brain damage from the Deadlock incident. She is then sent to juvenile detention, where she is rehabilitated and by the time she appears in the story, she and Misaki have already made up.
    • Chapter 68 hints that Seria Kumokawa and Motoharu Tsuchimikado had a confrontation at some point, similar to the one they had in the Agitate Halation Arc of the canon and Motoharu still holds a bit of a grudge.
    • Arisa's cameo in chapter 107 shows her still being distinct from Shutaura.
    • Something akin to Battle Royale probably happened on the Dark Side of Academy City, given the lack of MEMBER and BLOCK among active groups by the time ACIP begins. At the very least, Rakko was severely wounded, as the author confirmed that she's still hospitalized, and sniper of SCHOOL has changed.
    • Misaka Worst is present from the beginning, despite World War III not happening yet. Accelerator later states that she was sent to kill him at some point, but failed.
    • Chapter 85 hints that Worst and Umidori Kuroyoru met at some point.
  • Anti-Hero:
    • Both Accelerator and Shizuri Mugino are the Unscrupulous Hero when it comes to their way of dealing with threats.
    • After Season 3, Teitoku Kakine became this only out of pragmatism.
  • Anti-Magic: Imagine Breaker, as always. Although, Touma learns to control it better than in canon (see Adaptational Badass).
  • Arc Villain: The story is divided into seasons, and each has an antagonist or group of antagonists. Adam and Eve serve as the Big Bad Duumvirate.
    • Season 1: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Herald.
    • Season 2: Princess Carissa.
    • Season 3: Teitoku Kakine.
    • Season 4: Adam on the Australia side and Eve and her generals on the Academy City side of the story.
    • Season 5: Dr. Ricane.
    • Season 6: TBD
    • Season 7: TBD
  • Atrocious Alias: Kami the Harem King for Touma's Secret Identity, and goes just as you would expect.
    • Also, thanks to Motoharu, Touma and Accelerator's team name during the Grand Ability Duel Tournament is The Lolicons of Misfortune.
  • Attempted Rape: Somewhat Played for Laughs in chapter 22. As Kuroko realizes that she has a high chance of losing Mikoto to Touma, the former attempts this on Mikoto, but we all know what happens usually.
  • Beach Episode: Happens twice, in chapters 17 and 41.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Whenever someone from Magic Side threatens Hyouka or Index, Touma gets REALLY mad.
    • Just try hurting Touma or touching a hair on Last Order's or Worst's heads, and Accelerator's black wings will send you on a one-way trip to oblivion.
      • In a spin-off, Bayloupe and rest of New Light are added to that list.
      • Anything to do with the Kihara family. He immediately assumes that Jason is working with Eve after discovering his previous affiliation with the Kihara family but he drops these eventually. Unfortunately, his previous suspicions are actually correct.
    • Insulting Gekota or hurting Touma for Mikoto.
    • For Julunggul, it is messing with people's hearts. As one may expect from the Goddess of Fertility, the matters of romance are incredibly important to her. When she realizes that Jason is only faking his love for Kazari and Kuroko and is only using them for his own ends, she snaps his neck. Which he survives with sin marks.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Touma, when he saves Shizuri from being killed by Teitoku Kakine.
    • Hyouka, when she pulls Mikoto into Imaginary Number District to prevent her from destroying herself with Level 6 Shift.
    • A clone of Teitoku, saving Kazari from impromptu execution in chapter 131.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • Both Touma Kamijou and Ruiko Saten are pretty similar to each other for their kindness, insecurities, and being "normal" teenagers in a World of Badass. Unsurprisingly, Ruiko is one of the three girls in a polyamorous relationship with Touma.
    • Played for Laughs, but out of all the girls that are in love with Touma, Shizuri and his mother Shiina are very similar in personality and their attraction to a Chick Magnet Nice Guy (i.e. Touma and his father Touya respectively).
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Misaki, Ruiko, and Mikoto (although the last one is not exactly redhead) at the beginning of Touma's eventual harem. Foreshadowed as early as chapter 34.
  • Blow You Away:
    • On the Science Side, espers with the "Aero Hand" ability, with both Mitsuko Kongou and Ruiko Saten as examples.
    • On the Magic Side, the Herald of Seven Deadly Sins specializes in wind-based spells.
  • Brought Down to Badass: She may no longer wield Curtana, but Second Princess Carissa is still master Martial Artist with great knowledge of magic and warcraft. She isn't even afraid of the prospect of fighting Shizuri Mugino, the Number 5 Level 5 one-on-one.
  • Casting a Shadow: Jason's "Shadow World" ability.
  • Character Death: A few times, the most striking one being Kaori in chapter 120. Chapter 124 reveals the possibility of subversion in the future.
    • As of Chapter 127, as far as readers and characters alike are aware, Jason was killed by Styl.
  • Character Development: Due to spending much more time together, basically every member of the main cast changes for better.
    • Misaki lets go of her signature paranoia. She also begins exercising and stops erasing people's memories when they see her do something embarrassing.
    • Kuroko eventually accepts that Mikoto loves Touma and not her and at least tries to be civil with him.
    • Accelerator becomes more social and less arrogant. Case in point, when Accelerator, Mikoto, Misaki, and Shizuri are attacked by Eve's forces, he is unconcerned about the other Level 5s, having complete faith that they will win. Something that he eventually turns out to be correct about.
    • Mikoto notably becomes less of a tsundere and more honest with herself about her feelings towards Touma. Also, her grudge against Accelerator has lessened considerably as she has no problems with him taking care of Last Order. When she begins losing her sanity when forced to ascend past Level 5 against Juliet she recalls all of her friends, even Accelerator.
    • Touma finally learns that he cannot possibly protect the smiles of his friends if he doesn't care about his own smile.
    • Ruiko realizes that she can be a heroic, and reliable person even if she doesn't have that much power (although that may not be true), and is sometimes afraid of the dangers that need to be faced to help someone.
    • Pierce, of all people, seems to be receiving this as well after unknowingly becoming pawn of Eve.
  • Chaotic Neutral: Julunggul, of the hedonistic variety. While she despises Adam she is good friends with Eve and doesn't do anything to stop her plans to kill God despite knowing full well what she is doing. All she cares about is sex and that sexual future of Touma Kamijou which is the only reason she is keeping him alive and can be considered remotely an ally.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • Suzuki Hibatani was one of the three people listed in the "Category: Unranked" file that the Railgang discover in chapter 5. In chapter 109, she makes a full debut along with the explanation of her unique ability to influence outcomes.
    • Shiage Hamazura was mentioned as a "stupid, but reliable friend" in chapter 39 by Frenda. It's not until 21 chapters later is where he makes his first appearance in the fic.
  • The Chessmaster:
    • Aleister as per canon.
    • Eve. Up to this point, she has been leading the Kamijou Faction and her other opponents by the nose like dogs and has a penchant for laying down extremely complex plans to take advantage of all participants in the conflict. All part of her master plan to kill God and finally die.
    • Jason Kagere/Kihara: Perhaps second to Aleister in this fic. He has concocted far-reaching schemes to increase the strength of select individuals and has infiltrated both the Fallen and the Kamijou Faction for the purpose of furthering his plan to replace God with someone he believes is more worthy of the position. Note, that even Aleister is wary of him.
  • Civil War: At the start of the 6th season, when the Parameter List was released to the public.
  • Code Name: Like in canon, each magician has a "magic name" and will only reveal it to another when going all out in a battle.
  • Consummate Liar: Jason Kagere/Kihara. It is left ambiguous at first but it eventually begins clear that he is only using most of the Kamijou Faction for his own purposes. This includes risking his life for them and helping them get stronger.
  • Covert Pervert: Accelerator. In his narration, he admits that while he isn't like his friends in the Delta Force he is a high school student and is attracted to the opposite sex. So far, he admits he finds Bayloupe very attractive and has even tried to peek at her naked. He would never admit this to anyone. He even notes that Saiai has nice legs.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Jason, big time. He is a meticulous planner and has collected many items and allies throughout his adventures, never knowing when he might need them. This has helped greatly against opponents who otherwise outclass him in every other way. Best on display in his fight against Kaori. She is a Saint and thus, someone he can never hope to defeat in a contest of pure ability, but through careful planning and aid from Teitoku Kakine he comes out on top. Just barely. His ability to plan is so potent, even Aleister wants to avoid making any moves against him until he is 95% certain of his goals. Right now he is only 92% certain.
  • Curbstomp Battle:
    • Teitoku vs Shizuri and Touma. In his favor until she ascends past Level 5 and Touma's dragons are released. Then he's the one who gets curb-stomped.
    • Adam vs Fiamma of the Right (first fight). In Adam's favor. Fiamma is unprepared for Adam's abilities and is crushed.
      • Their second fight, Fiamma is the one delivering the curb-stomp by stabbing him in the back using his Flaming Sword, which symbolizes the Sword of Michael; something Adam is weak against due to him worshipping Lucifer.
    • Accelerator vs Cain. Accelerator cannot even scratch his foe even with his black wings. It isn't until he awakens his white wings that the battle is a little evener.
    • Accelerator vs Bayloupe. Not a single move leader of New Light can pull off even fazes her opponent, and she is defeated with one touch.
    • Jason vs Julunggul. Considering the latter being a Magic God, it's a no brainer, and the former only survived through the intervention of Noukan Kihara.
  • David Versus Goliath:
  • Death by Adaptation: Kaori in chapter 120. Four chapters later, it's revealed that she's been merely petrified.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Herald at the end of Season 1.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Jason was more than surprised when Stiyl came and attacked him while also giving a near curb-stomp battle to him as Stiyl prepared everything to take him down.
  • Doorstopper: As of February 1, 2022, the story sits at over 1.7 million words in length.
  • Eldritch Abomination: God is heavily implied to be this.
  • Epic Fail: Julius Caesar takes control over Misaka 10032... and then Last Order promptly shuts the girl down, to everybody's confusion.
  • False Friend: It is ambiguous at first but it becomes clear later on the Jason doesn't actually have any affection for anyone of the Kamijou Faction. They are simply useful to him and he has kept them alive because he needs them for his plans.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Adam. He is an immortal, all-powerful magician with magic that modern magic-users can't even begin to understand . . . and he doesn't use any of it in his battle with Touma. Instead, opting to just smack him around with hand-to-hand combat. Likely because he knows Touma would simply negate most of his spells, so he doesn't waste energy using them.
  • First-Name Basis:
    • Touma with Mikoto by chapter 4, with Ruiko by chapter 5 and with Misaki by chapter 23.
    • Jason with Kazari by chapter 5 and with Kuroko by chapter 46.
    • Also, Touma and Jason, as soon as they meet.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Because of Eve's chaos magic, Touma and several of his friends end up exchanging viewpoints (not actually their bodies). Touma ends up in Misaki's body, Mikoto in Touma's, Misaki in Mikoto's, Accelerator in Ruiko's and vice-versa and Jason in Kuroko's and vice-versa.
  • Foil:
    • Teitoku Kakine to Accelerator & Shizuri Mugino, but more so in this fic. Aside from the former's abilities revolving around creation to the latter's destruction, Accelerator and Shizuri both slowly change for the better in their interactions with Touma, whereas Teitoku continues his dark path and cooperates with Jason due to their goals aligning with each other (and the fact that Teitoku is marked by Jason's Mark of Lust).
    • Adam and Eve's co-dependent relationship draws a lot of parallels to Post-NT 9 Touma and Othinus relationship in canon.
  • Foreshadowing: When answering a reviewer in chapter 77, the author says to never trust a Kihara as a word of advice. After the reveal of Jason's other surname in the next chapter, and later on in chapter 120; it makes perfect sense.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: In the Kamijou Faction, we have the Railgang, ITEM, and New Light, along with unnamed posse consisting of Index, Last Order, Fremea and Hyouka.
  • A God Am I: Subverted and inverted with both examples below.
    • The ultimate plan of the Fallen led by Eve and Adam is to kill God. But surprisingly they don't want to become Gods themselves, simply remove His influence on humanity.
    • Jason is also interested in dethroning God so he can put someone else in His place, but it isn't himself. For now, readers have theorized that he actually wants to put Touma in God's place, once he figures out how to disconnect him from Imagine Breaker. This theory seems to have been confirmed in chapter 131.
  • Groin Attack: When Touma tries to get off Shizuri after tackling her into the ground, he ends up accidentally kissing her. She answers with a knee in the groin. He stays on the ground in pain for most of the scene.
    • A couple of chapters later, Frenda gives Pierce a pretty brutal one. Normally Touma would have laughed, but remembering his own experience a few chapters earlier, he can only look in pity.
  • Guile Hero: Jason. Despite his absurdly long list of competencies, he is often outmatched by his opponents and scrapes by through a combination of trickery, tactics, and luck. It later turns out he isn't actually a hero but he's still plenty guile.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Played straight at first when it comes the Parameter List, until Jason had it scrapped by convincing the Academy City Board of Directors of the major flaws by developing a method to raise the level of an esper (i.e. Ruiko Saten) who the list "predict" that she'll only be able to get to Level 1 in a few years and ultimately stopped there, to Level 2 in only a few weeks. But then, it's hinted that Ruiko actually has more potential into becoming a Level 5, which makes her an important piece in Jason's plan.
  • Harem Genre: Promised in the description. Eventually happens in chapter 112 to Jason and in chapter 122 to Touma. May also happen to Accelerator in the future.
    • Invoked by Motoharu and Pierce, when they create the persona of Kami the Harem King for Touma.
  • Hate at First Sight: More like suspicion, but Stiyl never once trusted Jason, and future chapters shows he was right. Believing it was strange how he got so friendly with the Kamijou Faction and defeating Knight Leader. Evidence shows he was right not to trust him at all.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his attitude, Stiyl actually enjoys peaceful days when he doesn't have to kill, and while never admitting it truly saw Kanzaki as a friend.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • Julunggul, courtesy of Aleister and Noukan. And then she is drilled into oblivion.
    • Also, Adam, from the hand of Fiamma, who uses symbol of Archangel Michael's sword to finish him. Only for him to be reborn and then killed by Othinus with actual Michael's sword.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Kazari tells Kuroko this after she tells her she has feelings for her boyfriend, Jason. Kazari isn't at all offended by this and even encourages Kuroko to confess, reasoning that what is important is how Jason feels and would bear no grudge against him or Kuroko if he chose Kazari. But neither of them would be happy no matter whom Jason chase as they would feel like they are hurting each other so, they agree to share him. He doesn't get any choice in the matter. Too bad he doesn't actually love either of them and is just using them for his own ends.
  • Jerkass to One:
    • Inverted with Shizuri, as she's much more lenient in her conversations with Touma and Rikou compared to nearly everyone else.
    • As chapter 79 shows, Misaki's notably crass attitude towards Mikoto is due to the latter being a "substitute" in Touma's life while he couldn't remember the former after the Deadlock incident. Ironically, it's noted by Mikoto, who usually doesn't like Misaki for her secretive and manipulating behavior, is where the latter is being honest to her.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Multiple characters throughout the work.
    • Adam. While he is an ancient and apparently immortal magician with the power to cause plagues, he is also a master hand-to-hand combatant. This comes in handy in his fight with Touma, where he barely bothers using magic against him and subdues his opponent with his vastly superior fighting skill.
    • Eve. Like her partner Adam she is also an immortal magician with the ability to seemingly creating anything from her Book of Genesis. She is also skilled enough in combat to cross blades with the likes of Kaori Kanzaki, a master swordswoman and a Saint to boot.
  • Lap Pillow: As discussed by Touma in chapter 118.
Lap pillows are superior because of the level of trust required between the boy and girl. The girl allows the boy's head in her lap and in a dangerous position where a lot of perverts could take advantage of that. While the guy lowers his guard and gives the girl power over him. Then they can stay in close contact to enjoy each other's warmth. It is the pinnacle of trust between two people and only true relationships will have that. THAT is why lap pillows are superior to head pats and hand holding!
  • Living Shadow: Jason's shadow is not only the ability but also its own character. Juliet also qualifies.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Despite spending more time together than in canon, and pretty much every major character being aware of the Magic Side, the Kamijou Faction still doesn't inform each other of all their adventures, creating gaps in knowledge that the antagonists take advantage of. This isn't done out of malice for the most part but of a desire to avoid getting people they care about in danger or just honestly not believing it to be important enough to inform them of.
    • A huge example being that not everyone was made aware of Touma and Shizuri's fight with Teitoku where he tried to kill them and he seemingly died as well. Thus, when Jason calls him in to help rescue Kazari and Kuroko, they accept his presence with little issue and even agree to keep his existence secret from the rest of their friends.
    • Another striking example is Mikoto still trying to hide the existence of Sisters from her closest friends. When Ruiko meets Misaka 10032 in Australia, Mikoto just says she is her biological twin instead of a clone.
    • And let's not forget the Parameter List.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Jason Kagere/Kihara. He has infiltrated the Kamijou Faction as a loyal and loved ally, but is using each and every one of them or his own ends. Even Aleister is wary of him.
  • Meaningful Name: In chapter 116, Misaka 10032 takes on the name Kyoka, which can mean "a person who became real in the summer". Fitting, considering the events of Sisters Arc.
  • Meido: Kuroko dresses as one (cat variation) for the punishment game in chapter 61. This scene eventually made it into the cover image.
  • Meta Fiction: At the beginning and end of some chapters between seasons one and four characters show up in a meta-world, where they comment on recent events and, from time to time, answer questions from readers.
  • The Mole: Chapter 120 reveals that Jason's been collaborating with Eve's group after Season 2, but he also stated to have consider contacting her after Season 1.
  • Monster Progenitor: Cain is noted to be this to Vampires, who are also known to be the children of Cain.
  • Mutually Exclusive Magic: Teikotu Kakine is able to join the list of espers capable of wielding magic by using his Dark Matter ability to create clones of himself out of Dark Matter that has been been given the properties to defy the laws that would cause the fatal hemorrhaging. It's implied it took a few hundred dead clones before he finally got the formula down so that they wouldn't die casting their first spell and further testing before he could actually make the process cost-effective.
  • New Transfer Student: From chapter 3 onwards, Accelerator is attending the same high school as Touma.
  • The Nicknamer:
    • Accelerator. People in his phone's contacts list who are saved under their actual names are rare exceptions. One of the few people he refers to by name is surprisingly Ruiko Saten. Especially considering that even Last Order and Worst are listed as "Brat" and "Bigger Brat" respectively.
    • Lessar to a lesser extent.
  • Nominal Hero: In Season 5, this fits Teitoku Kakine in a nutshell, as he's only collaborating with Jason due to wanting revenge on Ricane, in a pursuit to gain more power, and is unable to disobey Jason's orders due to the Mark of Lust.
  • No-Respect Guy: Downplayed. While ITEM (minus Rikou) usually treats Shiage like a useless errand boy, they do acknowledge him as reliable privately. It soon becomes subverted after their fight against Oda Nobunaga.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: While the Magic Gods are Archmages capable of changing reality at a whim, they're still the equivalent of "children playing in the sandbox" in comparison to God himself, according to both Jason and Adam.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Jason pretends to be a slacker and lazy just to mess with people (namely Kuroko), but he is actually incredibly meticulous and hardworking in his duties. In fact, those who really know him see him as a micromanager and a workaholic.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kaibi Gokusai uses Measure Heart on Mikoto, the (officially) most psychologically stable Level 5. Too bad she doesn't anticipate that it is Touma Mikoto who sees who Mikoto regularly zaps with electricity anyway.
  • One True Love: As stated by Jason himself, Juliet/Emiko is the only girl he truly and genuinely loved; whereas Kazari and Kuroko are only a front while in the Kamijou Faction.
  • Pet the Dog: Zig-Zagged. While Jason is revealed to not really care about anyone in the Kamijou Faction, he nevertheless did benefit the individual members. But only because they're important pieces in his grand plan.
  • Physical God: Along with Magic God Othinus, Julunggul is also one. Specifically, she is a Goddess of Fertility from Australia.
  • Polyamory: As of chapter 122, Touma is officially in a relationship with Mikoto Misaka, Misaki Shokuhou, and Ruiko Saten.
  • Playful Hacker: When it comes to computers and programming, Kazari is capable of hacking through the high-government databases with ease. It's what allows the Railgang to discover Jason's unique abilities, his position as the head in the R&D for Ability User's Curriculum, and being a member of LOCK-DOWN, along with the existence of Touma's Imagine Breaker. In fact, her natural aptitude in computers to hack and improve the security software in both Judgement and Academy City is enough for Noukan Kihara to offer her a job position as his representative in the city's cybersecurity division.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Main motivation for Fallen's plans.
  • Rank Up:
    • As Kami, Touma is designated as the 8th ranked Level 5. However, he doesn't receive Level 5 stipend, due to his misfortune.
    • Misaki becomes the 4th ranked Level 5, replacing Shizuri.
    • Ruiko starts off as a Level 0 but is raised to Level 2 thanks to Jason's help.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
    • Mikoto and Accelerator in chapter 33 against the Herald after he blows off Touma's arm.
    • Shizuri in chapter 73 against Teitoku after he injures and poisons Touma.
  • Rule 63: Touma gets transformed into so-called Touya Kamiko twice. Later the same fate befalls Thor.
  • Sadistic Choice: Juliet tries to force Mikoto to choose between Kuroko and two of the Sisters for who Mikoto wants her to kill first. It turns out though, she wasn't going to kill any of them and was just trying to get Mikoto to transform into Level 6 Shift. Unfortunately for Juliet, it works.
  • Secret Identity: The Level 5 "Kami the Harem King" is this for Touma, in order to avoid unwanted attention for his unique ability and preserve whatever normality he has left in his life.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: The villains of the first arc are physical embodiment of said sins.
  • Shared Universe: ACIP has two NSFW-filled Time Skip spin-offs: A Certain Orgasmic Infinity by Destati69 and A Certain Accelerated Light by Maderfole, as well as NSFW-free A Certain Regular Father by D.N.Works and prequel A Certain After School Secret by bitbitbit11. NSFW fics and prequel are canon B for original work, while SFW one is set in an alternate future.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Jason, Kazari, and surprisingly Accelerator for Touma x Ruiko ship.
    • Yuna for Touma x Hanabi ship.
    • Hanabi for Accelerator x Hibiki ship.
    • And, as in canon, all of the Amakusas for Touma x Itsuwa ship, and Motoharu for Touma x Kaori ship.
  • Ship Tease: A fanfic with multiple harem protagonists. What do you expect?
    • Touma with the standard members of his harem but particularly for this fic there, is a great amount of teasing with Shizuri, Frenda, and Carissa.
      • For her part Shizuri at first denies her feeling but comes to embrace as she tries to have a bigger part in Touma's life and refers to him as "her property". Notably, one of her main motivations for wanting to ascend past Level 5 is to impress Touma.
      • Frenda boasts to her friends about how close she and Touma are but she is actually incredibly shy in their interactions thus far.
      • Frankly, the only reason Carissa doesn't pursue him more aggressively is because of the age difference, otherwise, her feelings towards him greatly resemble Shizuri's and have a rivalry with her because of this.
      • As of Chapter 122, Touma — after much convincing from Misaki on the functionality of it all — is officially in a polyamorous relationship with Mikoto, Misaki, and Ruiko.
    • Accelerator with Worst, Bayloupe, Esther, Saiai, and OC Hibiki Nakano.
      • Worst likes to tease playfully flirt with him but Accelerator is simply annoyed by her.
      • Esther sees him as a mentor of sorts but many characters have noted how she spends a lot of time around him despite him not actually teaching her anything.
      • Saiai has a crush on Accelerator which so far is unreciprocated. However, because Saiai has some of Accelerator's thoughts patterns ingrained into hers — from her participation the Dark May Project — she is one the few people who can truly understand him; something Accelerator notes in his interactions with her despite not knowing her history. He also notes that she has nice legs.
      • Bayloupe tells Aiho and Kikyou she is Accelerator's girlfriend when she is found in the same bed as him after collapsing exhausted from a fight with Cain. Notably, Accelerator isn't too opposed to this fake relationship and doesn't actually mind her presence. One year later, during the events of the recursive fic, A Certain Accelerated Light, they become an actual couple.
      • Hibiki. While initially put off by his arrogance and aggressiveness, she later becomes attracted to him though she denies it. The two notably are known to be in sync, saying the same things at the same time or finishing each other's sentences.
  • Shout-Out: The first half of the discussion between Misaki and Mikoto in chapter 79 resembles their conversation in Misa x Misa doujinshi by Nanatsu Mukunoki.
  • A Sinister Clue: Jason is left-handed. Guess who turns out to be a traitor amongst the Kamijou Faction?
  • Spared by the Adaptation: A couple of characters survive compare to the canon series.
    • Since ITEM made an appearance before the events of Volume 15, Frenda gets this big time as she didn't end up selling out her team to SCHOOL and get bisected by a crazed Mugino afterward.
    • Banka Yobou fights against Jason Kagere and Kazari Uiharu, Judgment officers, instead of Shizuri Mugino, hitwoman from Dark Side, and as a result ends up arrested, not dead.
  • Stacy's Mom: When Touma's mother Shiina comes to visit, his classmates believe she's another member of his harem. When he angrily answers that's his mother, Jason says she's still hot. Touma responds by punching him in the face.
  • Superpower Lottery: Seriously, this series loves this trope, and with plenty of examples.
    • Jason Kagere is a Magician-Gemstone Esper Hybrid, do the math.
    • Teitoku Kakine's powers already this, but he later learns to use magic making his powerset even more ludicrous.
    • Eve. She can create anything that has ever existed from her Book of Genesis including mythical creatures, angels, and magicians capable of fighting against espers that have ascended past Level 5.
  • Tender Tears: Misaki in chapter 14, when it turns out that Sloth's curse and Heaven Chancellor's brain operation has healed Touma's brain damage from the Deadlock incident, thus ending infinite first meetings. Also, tears return to her eyes every time she mentions this event later on.
  • There Are Only Two Beds: The main problem of seven people from Kamijou Faction in chapters 81 and 82.
Ruiko: "How is this the most important topic of discussion when Adam is attacking Australia?"
  • The Reveal:
    • Touma reveals his memory loss during the Index Arc to Mikoto, Misaki, and unintentionally Shizuri; and later to Index.
    • As of chapter 120, the Parameter List was emailed to every citizen in Academy City.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill:
    • Touma, as per canon. He is even afraid of killing Eve's artificial creations.
    • Same as above for Mikoto. As long as she can keep her emotions in check.
    • Kuroko. As a member of Judgment, the preservation of lives is her topmost priority.
    • Jason. Due to his past traumas he is cannot bring himself to take a life. He is not opposed to it morally, however, as he is perfectly fine with killing people indirectly or orchestrating their deaths through third parties. He kills Kaori using a ritual known as God's Judgment where supposedly the target is literally judged by God and killed if they "impure." He rationalizes that God killed Kaori, not him, so his trauma doesn't cause him any problem.
  • Villainous Friendship: Eve, Othinus, and Juluggul. Though Othinus doesn't have any love for Adam she is rather cordial with his partner Eve and fellow Magic God Julunggul. At one point the three of them are at a cafe in Academy City enjoying tea and cookies while discussing their respective world-altering plans. They have an agreement that they will do nothing to actively interfere with each other's plans and when Julunggul dies, both Eve and Othinus are shown to rather saddened by her passing. It should be noted though, that Eve had no intention of ever honoring their agreement.
  • Villain Respect: Plenty of them.
    • Othinus using her usual human comment to Eve loosely.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Touma and Accelerator, hands down. As much as he insults and threatens to maim him, Accelerator spends a lot of time in "the damn hero's" company and in private considers him to be his closest friend. He even openly lampshades this in chapter 47.
  • What's He Got That I Ain't Got?!: Whenever Hamazura gets compared unfavorably to "Kamijou" by ITEM (minus Takitsubo). However, Hamazura doesn't know who Kamijou is for about four chapters, until he finally meets him face-to-face and recognizing him as the guy who defeat him during the Skill-Out Uprising Arc. Also, this trope is subverted when the two of them get to know each other more.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: This is allegedly the esper ability of Suzuki Hibatani. She is capable of applying the Bertrand Paradox to anything with multiple outcomes and defines randomness so she will get the outcome she desires, as long some possibility of that outcome exists. She uses this to try and win a raffle to have Kami (actually Touma) visit her school but it fails due to Imagine Breaker. It is potent enough that Othinus plans to use her to overcome the limitations of her 50/50 possibilities.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: Shiina's opinion of Seria.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing:
    • Upon the revelation that Jason was secretly manipulating the Kamijou Faction since the very beginning, all of the kind things he did for them can be seen as this.
    • Played for Laughs in chapter 123, when Motoharu immediately warns Mikoto, Misaki, and Ruiko of Touma being this.
  • Wrong Context Magic: The three residents of Academy City whose abilities are shown in the file "Category: Unranked", are Suzuki Hibatani, Touma Kamijiou, and Jason Kagere.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: As per canon, anyone who's an esper (no matter what level) cannot cast spells due to the laws between science and magic conflicting each other, would cause severe harm to their bodies. Magician-Esper Hybrids are examples of being capable of using abilities from both sides, such as Motoharu Tsuchimikado, Jason Kagere, and Juliet/Emiko. After Season 2, Accelerator figures out a way to bypass it by remotely manipulating his mana with ability, which is not technically casting. However, so far he only made use of this in a spin-off.
  • Your Tradition Is Not Mine: Jason was once a member of the Kihara family, but turned his back on them and changed his last name due to no longer "caring for their way of doing things". Nonetheless, the other members of the Kihara family still see the qualities of a Kihara in him and want him to come back. It should be noted that Jason is not above still using his former family name in order to take advantage of its influence. Such as, when he was trying to recruit Teitoku Kakine to his secret plan, he introduced himself as "Jason Kihara".
