Fanfic / A BFG's World Tour

Go To

A BFG's World Tour is a Total Drama fanfic by The Legendary Dragon Reaper.

In Total Drama World Tour, DJ was eliminated in Jamaica as the only member left on his team. But, what if instead of being eliminated, Chris decided to place him on a new team to replace an injured Izzy? This story follows Total Drama's Big Friendly Giant as he joins Team Chris Really Really Really Really Hot instead of being eliminated, and the changes his presence has.

The fic was completed in September 2021, with two sequels, A Dramatic Ridonculous Race and From CIT to All Star being announced.

This fanfic contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Thanks to DJ advising Cody to be himself with Gwen rather than his usual Casanova Wannabe shtick, the two start becoming genuinely close to each other and begin dating as of the end of the London challenge.
    • While Duncan and Courtney still break up, he doesn't cheat on her with Gwen this time and the two eventually end up getting back together.
    • In canon, Owen and Izzy were never shown interacting after their breakup. Here, they spontaneously decide to get back together during the third Aftermath and, as revealed in A Dramatic Ridonculous Race, eventually end up eloping.
  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: Rather than the cast fleeing the erupting volcano like at the canon end of World Tour, the season ends with the cast dumping Chris and Chef into the Pacific Ocean in a Call-Back to the Total Drama Island finale as DJ officially welcomes Alejandro to the Total Drama cast.
  • Adaptational Context Change: The "This is How We End It" musical number plays out differently than in canon. In canon, Heather was the one who fell down the hole as Alejandro bragged about the misdeeds he'd done throughout the season before Heather convinced him to save her by pointing out that beating her this way would be unsatisfying for him. Here, Alejandro's the one who falls into the hole and tries to get DJ to save him. DJ points out all the things Alejandro did to his former team before saving him anyway (because he doesn't want to win by using Alejandro's own tactics against him).
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Following her Heel Realization, Courtney begins focusing more on being a team player rather than winning and being the best, helping Gwen and Cody to eliminate Sierra and trying to make things right between her and Duncan. Upon her elimination, she even manages to apologize for being such a jerk to everyone and promises to start acting more like the honorable and integrity-filled person she initially presented herself as.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Sierra's Stalker with a Crush attitude towards Cody is played up much more darkly, with her acting Entitled to Have You towards him. So when Gwen ends up hooking up with Cody instead of Duncan, Sierra's the one to hold a grudge against Gwen instead of Courtney.
  • Always a Live Transmission: Averted. The show isn't aired live, needing the film to be edited to add in the confessionals and edit out any unneeded footage. When DJ encounters Kitty during "Planes, Trains, and Hot Air Mobiles", only up to the third Aftermath has aired, requiring him to explain to her everything that's happened since then.
  • Anything but That!: Gwen manages to shut down the musical number in "The Ex-Files" before it can begin by threatening to sing one of Chris' FameTown songs.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • DJ, as the title character in A BFG's World Tour, goes from being the last member of the Team Victory Cannon Fodder to be eliminated to lasting past his canon elimination and playing a large role in the second half of the season and eventually becoming the official winner.
    • Noah and Tyler also last longer than in canon, the former getting more focus on his rivalry with Alejandro, while the latter takes up Owen and Courtney's role as Alejandro's Unwitting Pawn.
    • Downplayed with Gwen given her status as part of the Spotlight-Stealing Squad, but she goes from being the only member of Team Amazon eliminated pre-merge in canon to finishing in fourth place here.
  • Brick Joke:
    • During one confessional early on in "I See London", DJ, when musing on the possibility of Gwen and Cody getting together, comments that they're probably taking bets on it over on the Aftermath, and tells Geoff to put him down for ten dollars. During his appearance in "Niagara Brawls", Trent mentions needing to give DJ a ten-dollar bill from Geoff.
    • When Gwen is ranting against Sierra for all she has done to Cody, it's noted that the stalker steals Cody's underwear and weaves it into a basket. When Sierra is eliminated, Cody demands for his underwear back and has the basket thrown in his face before Sierra jumps off.
  • Call-Back:
    • During "Niagara Brawls", it's revealed Courtney still has the skull carving Duncan gave her when she was eliminated back during Island. He's touched she still kept it despite their breakup.
    • Courtney sings a reprise of Bridgette's "I'm Sorry" song from the season's first Aftermath during "Niagara Brawls" to apologize to Duncan for driving him away from her with her previous bad attitude.
    • When Gwen successfully threatens Chris into cancelling the musical number in "The Ex-Files," he warns that he'll expect them to perform two songs in an episode down the line to make up for it. When Gwen tells Chris Courtney will only come out of her dressing room if she's allowed to perform the aforementioned reprise, he allows it since it will fulfill his previous statement.
    • DJ is the one who ends up exposing Chef's cheating for Blaineley in China, having been the unwilling beneficiary of a similar alliance with Chef the previous season. Chris later reveals that he's added a new rule that anyone getting illegal help from the staff is automatically disqualified, which is called the DJ Clause.
    • The baby seal that attacked DJ in "Anything Yukon Do, I Can Do Better" and "Can't Help Falling in Louve" returns in "African Lying Safari" taking Ezekiel's role from the canon episode. It later shows up again in "Planes, Trains, and Hot Air Mobiles" making one final attempt on DJ only for him to finally make peace with it and instead go after Alejandro, preventing him from making it to Hawaii before DJ or Cody.
  • Call-Forward: According to Chef, Chris had a venus flytrap he was attached to back on Wawanakwa. This of course is a reference to Larry, who is mutated and serves as a minor antagonist during Revenge of the Island.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Gwen lets out an epic one in the Easter Island episode for Alejandro trying to manipulate Cody.
  • Dark Horse Victory: DJ goes from being the Sole Survivor of his former team and being off his game due to his "curse" to being the official winner of World Tour.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • Heather, the "official" winner of World Tour in canon, is eliminated in "I See London," which was halfway through the season, but due to where this story begins, is the second chapter here.
    • Owen and Sierra, both of whom made the merge in canon, are eliminated pre-merge here.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Mal appears threatening Courtney during Duncan's nightmare at the beginning of "Niagara Brawls."
    • Kitty, Crimson, and Ennui from The Ridonculous Race all appear during "Planes, Trains, and Hot Air Mobiles."
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: No matter who wins World Tour, this is in effect for both finalists.
    • "Official" ending: After spending much of the first half of the season being tormented by his animal curse while simultaneously watching his original team get eliminated one-by-one thanks to Alejandro's scheming, DJ ends up making the most of his second chance and ends up winning the season.
    • "Alternate" ending: After two and a half seasons of trying and failing to get together with Gwen, Cody not only finally enters a relationship with her, but ends up winning the season as well.
  • Five Stages of Grief: DJ lampshades Courtney going through this following her breakup with Duncan. She is first in Denial by acting like nothing is wrong, then Anger in Greece after she suspects Gwen kissed Duncan. She enters Bargaining in Area 51 by blaming Gwen for her problems and trying to flirt with DJ, and then Depression once it hits that everything is her fault. By Niagara Falls though, she has reached Acceptance of her faults and apologizes to Duncan.
  • Gentle Giant: DJ is of course this, being the titular BFG of the story.
  • Grew a Spine: After suffering from Sierra's behavior through out the season, Cody finally stands up against her when she's eliminated and tells her he will never return her feelings for him: he has Gwen now so she should grow up and move on.
  • History Repeats: Invoked by Heather when predicting DJ to win during the final Aftermath, bringing up how the previous seasons' Big Bads all ended up getting defeated by the Wild Cards in the competition. She ends up being proven right in the "official" ending.
Heather: It pains me to admit it, but on the island I was so focused on the feud I had going with the likes of Gwen and Leshawna, I completely blew Owen off as a threat, and in the final three I saw how that turned out. [...] Then last season, I could see that Courtney was so focused on the likes of Leshawna, Beth, and Lindsay, she never even considered what might happen if Duncan had turned on her, and that ended up being her downfall in the end. [...] Then there's Alejandro this season. First he was focused on me, as he should've been, but after my so-called teammates voted me off in London, he put most of his focus on Noah when he discovered the little smartass saw through his act, that he completely ignored the one that got screwed over by him but was still in the game: DJ. Alejandro totally ignored him because he was focused on Noah, and now DJ's gunning for him along with the others, and that's going to serve as Alejandro's downfall.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: It's Alejandro of all people who helps DJ overcome his animal curse by teaching him the mind over matter mantra of "Kore wa nanimo imi shinai." It ends up costing him a spot in the finals as DJ ends up making peace with the baby seal who's been tormenting him all season and the two work together to prevent Alejandro from finishing the race to Hawaii.
  • Honor Before Reason: Guilt-ridden over cheating for Alejandro in China, Tyler, rather than doing as Noah suggests and eliminating the one who caused him to cheat in the first place, decides to quit the competition, saying that if he can't win the right way, he'd rather not be competing at all.
  • I Lied: At the beginning of "Sweeden Sour", Courtney shamefully admits this in the confessional in regard to her claim the previous season of being lactose intolerant after Gwen catches her accepting a chocolate bar from Alejandro.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy:
    • When asked about Gwen's new relationship with Cody during the third Aftermath, Trent says that it's Gwen's choice on who she goes out with now, not his, and as long as she's happy, then he's happy for the two of them.
    • By the finale, Sierra has accepted that Cody's and Gwen's feelings for each other are genuine, though she warns Gwen she'll hunt her down if she does anything to hurt Cody.
  • In Another Man's Shoes: Bridgette admits on the final Aftermath that having fallen for Alejandro's false charms at the beginning of the season caused her to realize that she was too harsh towards Gwen the previous season over her breakup with Trent.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite DJ's continued presence, some World Tour Stations of the Canon are unable to be avoided.
    • Duncan is still caught in London and forced to return to the competition.
    • Duncan is also still involved in someone catching Gwen making out with another competitor in the confessional except here, he's the one doing the catching instead of the one making out with her.
    • Gwen is still called "New Heather" at one point during the Area 51 challenge.
    • Cody still builds a face in Sweeden instead of a boat, only this time in the shape of Goku.
    • Blaineley still "wins" the Second Chance Challenge and is forced into the competition as retaliation by Geoff for sending Bridgette to Siberia.
    • Chris's plane is still blown up in Drumheller, resulting in the one responsible being disqualified from the competition.
    • Cody and Alejandro are still part of the Final Three.
    • Despite neither one making the finale, Heather and Alejandro still have their showdown over the volcano, except here as helpers rather than competitors.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Gwen pointing out Cody hasn't been eliminated despite not singing for several songs.
  • Misspelling Out Loud: At the start of "The Ex-Files", Tyler, angry over Duncan dumping Courtney, refers to him as a "jerk with a capital G."
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Tyler realizes he's been a pawn to Alejandro, he decides to quit the game.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Ironically, it's Sierra making the same false NSDR comment Courtney made in canon comparing Gwen to Heather that triggers the latter's Heel Realization.
Courtney: Everyone hated Heather for the way she acted back on Wawanakwa, that she was manipulative, cold and calculating, but she played it off as just playing the game. Then when I got home after season 2, people started saying the same things about me and... and I said I was just playing the game, exactly the same as Heather. I... I don't want to be like her. I don't want everyone to hate me like that, and I never did. Maybe if I wasn't like her... maybe everything between me and Duncan could've been better. [...] It's just not fair to me that other people are okay with losing and screwing up, it makes me feel selfish for being so upset over it, so I get in this habit of raging like that, and before I knew it... I ended up letting myself become the New Heather. The real one.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Courtney tells Sierra that when it comes to Cody, there's one person who he has mutual feelings for and one who's trying to claim what isn't hers, and the latter is whom she's voting out. Too bad Sierra doesn't realize that description fits her a lot more than it does Gwen.
  • Oh, Crap!: Gwen and Cody in "Niagara Brawls" when Chris reveals he's brought in Trent to help out with the challenge in the episode. Ironically, readers already know from the previous chapter's Aftermath that he's perfectly okay with Gwen and Cody being together.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Courtney still attempts to pull this on Duncan in Area 51, only with DJ instead of Tyler. However, he's smart enough to immediately realize what she's doing and is too loyal to his friendship with Duncan to betray him like that, letting Courtney down gently.
  • Pass the Popcorn: When Cody is finally standing up to Sierra after her elimination, Chris is shown eating a bag of popcorn while watching it play out.
Chris: What? Letting dramatic scenes like these play out are totally worth the ratings. Keep going.
  • Point of Divergence: The main premise of A BFG's World Tour is DJ not being eliminated in Jamaica and instead joining Team Chris Really Really Really Really Hot due to Izzy being medically evacuated.
  • Politically Correct Villain: Chris has Noah made one of the "brides" during the Niagara Falls challenge due to wanting to appease the gay rights people.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After spending most of "The Ex-Files" being relentlessly pounded on by Courtney and Sierra, the former using her as a scapegoat for Duncan breaking up with her and the latter gunning for her head after the reveal she kissed Cody in London, Gwen finally hits her last straw and unloads on the two of them:
Gwen: And some of us hate being made into a freaking scapegoat because of your own screwed up head not being able to accept when your boyfriend dumps you!
Courtney: What, you think Duncan breaking up with me is my fault?! Why would you think that?
Gwen: Why the hell do you think? You think you're in the middle of Grand Theft Mohawk because of one thing Alejandro said, and then you try to tear me apart like you're a cat and I'm a freaking scratching post!
Cody: Kind of a weird analogy, but she's not wrong.
Gwen: Seriously, he dumped you because you're such a goddamn control freak and keep trying to turn him into something he isn't! Between the list of 47 things you wanted to change about him and that freaking 32 page letter, I'm surprised he didn't dump you sooner!
Sierra: Yeah, as if you didn't want him to yourself. Then when you realized that you couldn't have him you had to go for my Codykins-
Gwen: And don't even get me started on you! You're even worse than she is you freaking lunatic! You act like you love Cody like he's some kind of ancient Greek god, but all you do is harass him!
Sierra: At least I appreciate him! At least I could see right from the start the pure, caring and gentle soul that he is! All you did was act like he was some kind of pest, and then you just come in and steal him out from under me like-
Gwen: HE WAS NEVER YOURS! All you've done to him this entire time is make his life a living hell! You've done nothing but harass him and basically molest him, you've almost gotten him killed on more than one occasion, you steal his freaking underwear-
Cody: And she weaved them into a basket for me.
Gwen: And the worst part is that the rest of us spent this whole time standing around doing nothing while you just molested him, and when he tried to vote you off you acted like a self-righteous [bleep] about it! At least when Cody was annoying me back at Wawanakwa he accepted that I wasn't into him, and he never freaking molested me-
Cody: GWEN! As much as I appreciate you standing up for me, we are in the middle of a minefield, and a challenge.
  • Running Gag: DJ asking if anyone wants to be the first one to sing, only to reluctantly do it himself.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Owen ends up quitting during the Greece episode to allow Noah to stay, but all he's really done is deprive his little buddy of his sole ally against Alejandro. Noah even brings this up in the following episode.
  • Shoot the Dog: The rest of the cast treat voting out Duncan and Courtney right after they just got back together to be this, only managing to justify it to themselves by pointing out that after everything they've been through this season, the two of them need time to focus on themselves and not on the competition.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Dragon Ball Z Abridged is referenced several times, mostly through the characters' repeated utterance of Gohan's "Crapbaskets!" catchphrase. Cody even lampshades this In-Universe during "Chinese Fake-Out".
      • Gwen's Rousing Speech she gives to Cody during "Planes, Trains, and Hot Air Mobiles" is based off of the one Goku gives Gohan against Cell in the Season 3/series finale.
Gwen: Cody, listen to me. You need to know that if you don't do this, you're gonna let me down. You're gonna let the other Drama Brothers down. You're gonna let all your friends down. You're gonna let everyone down. But before all that, if you don't get moving again, you're gonna let yourself down. You're more than just some scrawny geek from Canada, and more than just another member of the Drama Brothers. You're Cody Anderson of Total Drama and you're about to win. Now you have to plant your feet, grit your teeth, and go eat that horse!
    • Regarding Dragon Ball Z proper, since Gwen isn't eliminated in "Sweeden Sour," the model head Cody winds up building instead of a boat is one of Goku instead.
    • After capturing Jack the Ripper, DJ goes to unmask him, only to find a mask of Old Man Jenkins underneath.
    • When Noah suggests to weaken Alejandro by eliminating his pawn in Tyler, Cody compares it to how "the hardest choices require the strongest wills."
  • Skewed Priorities: Duncan believes Courtney has this during "Niagara Brawls" when she abandons the challenge to dive into the shark-infested waters to retrieve something that fell into them. He changes his mind when he realizes it's the skull carving he made for her after she was eliminated off the island in Season 1.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Two non-fatal examples:
    • Due to being caught by DJ and Owen during the "Jack the Ripper" challenge in London, Ezekiel is officially kicked off the plane, preventing him from becoming any more feral than he'd already become at that point.
    • Due to the volcano not erupting in the finale this time around, Alejandro doesn't become horribly burned here and forced to spend over a year stuck in the Total Drama Machine.
  • Take That!:
    • The canon plot point of Duncan cheating on Courtney with Gwen is brought up several times, with all parties involved scoffing at the idea.
    • Both The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution are referenced, with the general consensus being that while they're both bad adaptations of beloved franchises, the former at least attempts to be faithful to its source material.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Part of the fic's premise. With Izzy being medically evacuated from the competition, and the rest of Team Victory already having been eliminated, Chris has DJ moved over to Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot instead.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Noah and Alejandro have this when they're forced to compete as a couple during the Niagara Falls challenge. Though both would like to eliminate the other then and there, Alejandro needs to work with Noah in order to get immunity and Noah needs to work with Alejandro because he doesn't want Alejandro to toss him to the mutant sharks at the bottom of the falls.
  • Worth It: Even though it winds up getting her disqualified from the competition, Gwen considers blowing up Chris' plane to be this, since she got to destroy something with his face on it.
