Go To

zenith of stars is a Fusion Fic between The Garden of Sinners and Jujutsu Kaisen written by Yuesya, available to read on Spacebattles, FFN, and AO3.

Nanami Shiki is an ordinary 5-year-old girl born to a dying branch family of the Gojo clan with no talent for jujutsu whatsoever. Then she and her parents are caught in an accident that leaves the girl orphaned and comatose for a year. When she wakes up, she discovers her brown eyes have turned into a strange shade of blue and now see lines on everything. Should she trace a sharp object along them, it destroys the objects without any hope of recovery. With such a powerful Cursed Technique and ocular jujutsu appearing out of nowhere, Shiki is abruptly adopted by the Gojo clan and thrown into the complicated world of jujutsu, where she must learn to train her powers and navigate jujutsu politics at record speed to protect herself from the many who seek to claim her for their own.

This fanfic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Zenin Naoya is as always a sexist, lecherous pig, but his obsession with "Shiki-chan" makes him even creepier than in canon, considering it starts when she's only 9 and he's 10 years older than her. The second he sees she looks like a female Satoru he begins ogling her with unnerving intensity, and even as socially inept as she is, Shiki can tell there's something wrong with the way he looks at her. By the time she's 15, he's fantasizing what it would be like to fuck her, and what little he describes is already depraved enough.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Satoru still has to deal with the heartbreak of Geto's betrayal, but having Shiki whom he resonates a lot with to care for alleviates much of his loneliness.
  • Adaptational Expansion: Much more emphasis is placed on the inner workings of the jujutsu world and inter-clan politics than the original story, where they were secondary concerns.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Satoru loves rubbing Shiki's head and messing up her immaculately combed hair to her annoyance.
  • Afterlife Welcome: After his final defeat at Shiki's hands, Araya is met in the afterlife by Touko, with the two having a conversation about Araya's goals and what Kenjaku might be getting up to without them before Araya passes on.
  • Almighty Janitor: Downplayed. Shiki is officially ranked at Grade One, which is considered the pinnacle that most sorcerers can hope to achieve. However, multiple characters have made note that Shiki’s capabilities already far outstrip that of even the strongest Grade One sorcerers within the administration. The Gojo clan has tried to petition for her to be promoted to Special Grade, but multiple factions worked together to block the motion, fearing the influence they would gain as the only sorcerer clan in the modern age with multiple Special Grade sorcerers in their midst. After the part she played in stopping Geto's attack on Saitama, Shiki is finally promoted to Special Grade.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Shiki's Cursed Technique Reversal "Black" allows her to minimize the concept of 'nothingness' on someone meaning that anything that happens to them will happen to them. Put simply, it means her attacks can't miss. Similar to a domain expansion "sure-hit".
  • An Arm and a Leg: During Shiki's abduction by the Kamo family, Araya Souren winds up tearing off Gojo Kiyohira's arm. Later on, Shiki giving Shoko Araya's papers on puppet bodies allows her to craft Kiyohira a near-perfect prosthesis to return him to full fighting form.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Kenjaku and Souren Araya are partners in crime, though for the most part Kenjaku leaves Shiki to Araya.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Satoru quickly takes a shine to Shiki and claims her as a little sister of sorts that he loves to dote on. Heaven help anyone who dares to hurt her, as he's willing to throw the entire jujutsu world in chaos for the sake of his dear little cousin.
    • Nanami, being Shiki's uncle and sole remaining relative, is also fiercely protective of his niece. Sadly, having nowhere near the power and influence as Satoru, he's often limited in how much he can do for her, especially with the Gojo Clan taking custody over her, something that he's all too aware of and extremely unhappy about.
    • Tsumiki throws a milkshake at Zenin Ogi when she sees him harassing Megumi. Ogi is a Special Grade 1 sorcerer who could kill her in the blink of an eye, but that's not going to stop her from protecting her little brother.
  • Big Good: Satoru serves as Shiki's main support in the story, having both the political and jujutsu might to keep her safe, especially once he ascends as the head of the Gojo Clan.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The three great clans, Gojo, Kamo, and Zenin are composed of numerous branches, each squabbling against others for power. Add in inter-clan marriages, and things start getting even messier.
  • Born Winner: It took a brush with death to kickstart Shiki's growth, but it soon becomes clear that she has extraordinary talent just below Satoru, if not outright matching him. Her cursed energy reserves alone are already just below Satoru's, and her Mystic Eyes and cursed technique Nihility seem to be the antithesis to his Six Eyes and Limitless. She became a Grade One sorcerer before even even enrolling in one of the Jujutsu schools * and is the youngest person in history to perform Black Flash, surpassing even Satoru by an entire year. It’s pointed out multiple times by numerous sorcerers that Shiki is a Special Grade Sorcerer in all but name with lack of official recognition simply due to politics. Until Chapter 125 that is where she is officially promoted by the Higher Ups.
  • Character Tics: Shiki will blink owlishly whenever she's confused.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Shiki obtaining the Prison Realm from Araya is only briefly brought up after the latter's death, but comes into play when Gojo uses it to seal away Geto after he nearly massacres a city.
  • Commonality Connection: Shiki having cursed eyes is what initially drew the interest of Satoru, since they're likely the only two people in the world with ocular jujutsu.
  • Composite Character: Kenjaku takes Cornelius Alba's place as Touko and Araya's old friend.
  • Cruel Mercy: Satoru spares the Kamo clan from outright dissolution for the crime of kidnapping Shiki, but he makes sure the clan heads Teruichi and Matsuhime are executed and takes much of the clan's resources as recompense. The clan quickly tears itself apart in the following power struggle and are hanging by a thread onto their status as a great clan years afterward.
  • Death by Adaptation: Aozaki Touko is long dead in the story, having lived hundreds of years ago in the Meiji Era as a contemporary to the historical Kamo Noritoshi.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Yuzuki Gojo, the first friend Shiki makes. Although he was born with a powerful Cursed Technique, he also has an incurable illness that leaves him bedridden with poor health and will likely die in his early twenties. Sure enough, he eventually passes away in chapter 61. To make the whole thing worse, Shiki had only just evolved her eyes to the point she could potentially kill his illness but the injuries she incurred from her battle with Araya meant she couldn't make it to him in time to put it to use.
  • Die or Fly: Geto's plans are revealed to include this, as in addition to simply masssacring all non-sorcerers, he reveals that parts of his approach is to induce a forced evolution in humanity, as the terror and panic caused by his genocidal campaign will result in a massive explosion of Cursed Spirits, resulting in ordinary people being exposed to much higher levels of cursed energy and danger, resulting in those with latent potential awakening their abilities and becoming sorcerers. Once Tsumiki becomes a sorcerer after getting cursed into a coma, he takes it as a sign his plans have merit and unleashes his curses on a city in an attempt to mass awaken people with hidden potential and slaughtering everyone else.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Matsuhime Kamo kidnaps Shiki to transplant her cursed technique onto her son, who was born without the capability to become a sorcerer. Not once does she ever stop to think that it wouldn't take very long for Satoru to figure out what happened to her and annihilate the Kamo clan off the face of Japan in retaliation.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: In an attempt to befriend Aikawa Ruri, Shiki offers her a friendly sparring match. Unfortunately, Aikawa, who already has a chip on her shoulder when it comes to clan sorcerers, just sees it as a stronger sorcerer looking for a chance to bully a weaker one, and Shiki only makes that impression worse when she offers to handicaps herself in various ways such as refraining from using her Technique, Cursed Energy, and blindfolding herself.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Araya Souren is killed by Shiki in Ch 60, which still leaves both Kenjaku and Geto to continue their plans. And that's not getting into the fact that Sukuna's fingers are still a potentially looming threat...
  • Dwindling Party: Aozaki Touko, Araya Souren, and Kenjaku were friends long ago. Touko is murdered by Araya for her research hundreds of years ago and Araya is killed by Shiki one year before the events of 0, leaving Kenjaku the last one left as Touko remarks.
  • Emotionless Girl: Shiki doesn't feel much about many things and the things she does feel rarely actually shows on her expression. That isn't to say she's an emotionless doll as most people perceive her to be, but rather her emotional growth is stunted by her trauma and she often struggles to identify and express what she's feeling.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Satoru and Shiki end up forming this dynamic. The former is loud, irreverent and frequently playful while the latter is quiet, reserved and always serious. Even their Cursed Eyes and Cursed Techniques are noted to directly contrast each other. While Satoru's Six Eyes are described as bright like stardust, Shiki's are said to be dark and abyssal. Satoru wields Limitless, which represents "everything", and Shiki has Nihility, which represents "nothing".
  • Epic Fail: Kyoto Jujutsu High performs very poorly in the Goodwill Event during Shiki's first year. Despite the elders conspiring to remove Shiki and give Kyoto a free win, they barely eke out a victory over Tokyo despite having a numerical advantage. Rather than making Kyoto look strong, they just made them look weak and incompetent.
  • Expy: Despite sharing her name and abilities, Gojo Shiki is not Ryougi Shiki transplanted into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen but an Original Character with a different personality.
  • Festival Episode: Obon is of great significance to Jujutsu society, owing to its purpose in honoring the departed, and has been the focus of two arcs so far. Most notably, every year one of the Three Great Families is in charge of organizing a final Okuribi ceremony specifically in memory of sorcerers who had fallen in the line of duty, and to help guide their spirits onto the afterlife.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Aikawa Ruri is so hostile towards Shiki because her first exposure to a clan sorcerer and jujutsu society as a whole was none other than Zenin Naoya. Aikawa assumed that all clan sorcerers were arrogant jerks like Naoya and treated Shiki like she was the same. Kinji thinks it's still no excuse for Aikawa to be a jerk to Shiki, and vows to punch her in the face again if he sees her taking it out on Shiki.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Ima Gojo personally took custody of Shiki after her parents passed away and awakened to her Cursed Technique, hoping she would be able to use her to increase her own standing in the clan. Unfortunately for her, the clan values Shiki more than Ima herself, and despite Ima's best attempts, Shiki cares so little for her or her standing in the clan that she's essentially a non-entity. This culminates in her sanity taking a nosedive when she becomes such a liability in the clan that they wash their hands of her.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: After unlocking his Domain Expansion and his Jackpot, Kinji tends to suffer injuries a lot. Since this is still a reasonably recent development, he hasn't quite developed the tendency to casually shrug off grievous injuries he would as a third year in canon.
  • Gunboat Diplomacy:
    • Satoru's favorite negotiating strategy is flexing some of his jujutsu muscles, reminding the other party that they can either give the honored one what he wants, or he'll simply take or do whatever he needs by force.
    • In the Kyoto Exchange, Shiki takes some cues from Satoru's playbook and cows the Kyoto higher-ups into compliance and warns them not to trouble her with such inconveniences like detaining Kinji under false pretenses.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Like her Satoru before her who is a dashing young man, Shiki grows up to be a beautiful young lady. Many interlude chapters have characters commenting favorably on her good looks and it's offhandedly mentioned that there are outright rumors circulating the Jujutsu community about her beauty, and that Shiki very much does them justice.
  • Heir Club for Men: With how conservative Jujutsu society is, there is a fair bit of sexism against females ingrained in the system, with women sorcerers expected to take care of their appearance, have good etiquette and are pressured to bear children in the hopes they'll inherit powerful Cursed Techniques. While Shiki herself is, for the most part, far too powerful to be subjected to such attitudes directly, it's noted in one of Satoru's interludes that many elders from the Gojo clan would likely protest the idea of making her clan heir for no other reason then the fact that she was a girl.
  • Home Field Advantage:
  • Honor Before Reason: Gojo Ima is determined to restore the honor and recognition of the Tobiume as a branch family of the Gojo clan, no matter what it takes. This includes forcing her subordinates in the Tobiume family to become sorcerers or Windows even if they're completely unqualified civilians.
  • How They Treat the Help: Shiki inadvertently earns herself the loyalty of the Suzurigi, a servant family affiliated with the Gojo clan, due to her willingness to treat their members with courtesy, and try to keep their members away from danger during missions. One member in particular, Choki, more or less ends up becoming her personal assistant. By comparison, it's noted that most normal clan sorcerers take the serving staff for granted, often not even bothering to remember the names of individual attendants.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Shiki winds up being impaled from behind by Toji while she's with Gojo and Geto. She survives thankfully, but she's out of action for the remainder of the battle.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Shiki usually doesn't mean to insult people she's talking to, but her social ineptitude, high position, incredible strength, and aloof demeanor paint her as arrogant. This causes a lot of friction with Aikawa Ruri, whose insecurity twists everything Shiki says into the worst possible light. Shiki doesn't say anything to her? Clearly the Gojo princess can't be bothered to talk to an insignificant clanless sorcerer. Shiki offers to spar and train with her? She must want to beat up someone way weaker for fun.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Gojo Isao, the sorcerer who initially checked whether Shiki's eyes were real or not, was rather brusque in his interactions and dismissive of the possibility of them being real, but his later clarification that he dislikes unqualified people being forced into a sorcerer's life because of the danger and the subsequent reveal that Gojo Ima had already gotten several Tobiume family members killed by making them pursue a lifestyle they were unfit for in hopes of restoring the branch family's honor, makes his skepticism much more reasonable in context.
  • Jerkass to One: While Satoru can be unpleasant toward others, the one person he really holds in contempt is Tsukumo for her unwitting part in Geto's Face–Heel Turn. The second he learns Tsukumo met with Shiki during her excursion in China, he dropped everything to fly by and warn her not to speak with his cousin again, threatening to kill her if she did. He even goes so far as to force her into a binding vow to make sure she doesn't go anywhere near Shiki.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: After being adopted by the Gojo Clan, Shiki is exclusively given expensive, high-quality, kimonos to wear. They tend to get torn and bloodied on her missions, but she has enough spares on hand that it doesn't really affect her wardrobe. On her part, Shiki becomes so comfortable with wearing kimonos such that, upon enrolling in Tokyo High, she requests for her uniform to be made in the same style.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Jihei is one of the most reasonable high ranking members of the Gojo clan and happens to own a Turkish Angora named Mi-chan that he loves and takes care of. After he dies, Tsumiki adopts Mi-chan and she also qualifies for this trope, being among the kindest and gentlest characters among the cast.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: Shiki humiliates Naoya in public by forcing him, a clan heir, to prostrate himself before her, a nine-year-old girl, with nothing but her cursed energy. To add insult to injury, she jokes that there's no need for him to be so humble.
  • Lady of War: Shiki's fighting style primarily relies on speed and precision to cut the lines of death she sees and her movements are described to resemble a beautiful, graceful dance in action. As it happens she's also well practiced in traditional Japanese dances as part of her training from the Gojo Clan.
  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: The majority of the Gojo clan only cares about Shiki for the prestige she can bring them, but they do mean well for her by their messed up standards, look after her material needs and are invested in protecting her from outsiders, if only because she's an invaluable member. Compare that to Zenin clan, who are infamously misogynistic in their treatment of female members, or the Kamo clan who tried to forcefully wed her to their clan heir and later planned on extracting her cursed technique and killing her in the process.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: As terrible as Geto's plan to genocide all non-sorcerers would be, it's still preferable to Araya's plan which would destroy all of humanity.
  • Magical Eye: Shiki awakens the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception after awakening from her year-long coma. We also have Satoru's Six Eyes from canon, granting him phenomenal visual acuity, and unparalleled Cursed Energy control.
  • Master Swordsman: Kiyohira is noted to be the best swordsman from the Gojo Clan and is also the sole remaining master of the original 'Kageryu' style that the more modern 'Shin Kageryu' is derived from. Shiki, who is no slouch herself with a blade and can already match Kusakabe in a swordfight, has admitted that Kiyohira is superior to her in terms of pure sword skill.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Ultimately, the reason why Geto and Araya are unable to work together is because of their differing hatred and goals. Araya tells Geto to his face that it's not "monkeys" who are the problem, it's "humans."
  • Muggle Best Friend: Tsumiki is this towards Shiki, having been brought alongside her brother as one of the conditions of being adopted by the Gojo Clan. She rapidly proves to be a positive influence on Shiki, throwing her birthday parties and celebrations and encouraging her to makes more friends at Tokyo High. As of chapter 99, the muggle part no longer applies.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: The legitimate children of the Kamo clan head Teruichi have no aptitude for jujutsu, unlike his bastard child Noritoshi, who has their family technique Blood Manipulation. His wife Matsuhime is especially bitter about this and goes to some insane lengths trying to rope in Shiki to prop up her son Nobutomo.
  • No-Sell:
    • Once the Gojo clan has an inkling as to how Shiki's cursed technique works, they give her one of Sukuna's fingers in the hopes she might be able to destroy it. To their chagrin, Shiki reveals that she can't; it isn't that she can cut the "lines" connected to Sukuna's fingers, it's that there are no lines connected to Sukuna's finger at all, which raises some disturbing complications as to how effective Shiki will be if or when Sukuna reincarnates through Yuji...
    • The effect of Shiki's Cursed Technique Lapse "White". By maximizing the concept of "nothingness" it ensures that whatever, or whoever, it's used on cannot be affected by anything. Besides blocking attacks, it can also be used to prevent injuries from worsening and keeps Shiki's kimonos from getting dirty or damaged. It's noted to be one of the most powerful defensive Cursed Techniques recorded, even being compared to Satoru's Infinity, but it does have a few drawbacks keeping it from being a Story-Breaker Power; Shiki can only use it on a single target at a time and, being a Lapse technique, it has a steep Cursed Energy cost, especially since it continuously expends energy while in use, such that Shiki has run perilously close to running out of Cursed Energy on two occasions from being forced to keep it active.
  • No Social Skills: Having been largely isolated from other children during her early years, coupled with her decidedly skewed mindset and perception of the world, Shiki often finds herself confused when interacting with other people and often misses or misreads various social cues. In turn, Shiki also struggles to get her own intentions across and frequently doesn't understand when her actions and words offend or intimidate others. Tsumiki challenges to make new friends in Tokyo Jujutsu High to overcome her ineptitude, and guides Shiki whenever she's trouble.
  • Noodle Incident: Yuki Tsukumo was given her Special Grade rank, the first sorcerer to be rated as such in the modern age, after some sort of incident that involved an entire archipelago in the Phillipine sea getting sunken into the ocean.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • Despite Kenjaku and Araya's very different views on humanity and end goals, the two have had a friendship that's lasted centuries.
    • Shiki the dutiful ojou is about as different as she can be from Kinji the irreverent delinquent, but the two become strong friends to each other.
  • Ojou: While Shiki was born outside the Gojo Clan, she has fully grown into this role by the time she becomes a student at Tokyo High. From being reserved and polite in manner, having a strong sense of duty and having a certain ignorance towards electronics and other modern amenities. Kinji, even calls her this by name on multiple occasions.
  • Point of Divergence: A big one occurs one year before 0. Shiki is given the cursed object Araya sacrificed Jihei for, which is described as a strange cube. It's implied that this cube is none other than Prison Realm, meaning the Shibuya Incident possibly won't happen since Araya couldn't pass it on to Kenjaku in time.
  • Rank Up: Come Chapter 125 in the aftermath of Geto’s failed attack Shiki is officially promoted to Special Grade Sorcerer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Inspector General Tsuchimikado proves to be this, as he shows support for Satoru and Shiki's actions during Geto's attack on Saitama, realizing nothing good would come from aggravating them while also taking steps to limit the Zenin clan's sphere of influence, which had expanded following the Kamo clan's downfall.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Shiki finds herself all the way in China taking missions below her paygrade as part of the elders' schemes so she won't carry Tokyo Jujutsu High to victory over Kyoto in the Goodwill Event.
  • Red Baron: Satoru is the "honored one", while Shiki is the "blessed child".
  • Refuge in Audacity: The Gojo clan objects to Satoru and Shiki moving out of their clan compound, but there's nothing much they can do to stop them. Their solution? Buy out every other house in Satoru and Shiki's new neighborhood and fill them with Gojo underlings.
  • Retired Badass: After Araya Souren tears off Gojo Kiyohira's arm, he retires from active duty as a sorcerer and instead becomes the elder of the Tobiume family. Even after getting a prosthetic that restored his skills back to full strength, he still maintains and works in his administrative position.
  • Running Gag: If someone meets Shiki and Satoru without already knowing their familial relationship, expect them to ask, or assume, the two of them are brother and sister.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: After Kinji is detained by the Kyoto higher-ups for supposedly breaking the laws of Jujutsu society and "stealing secrets", Noritoshi takes it upon himself to free Kinji at the cost of his reputation and standing. Shiki cowing the higher-ups into compliance renders his efforts moot, but hey, it's the thought that counts.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Shiki and Kinji share the same "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Shiki and Satoru are distant cousins yet look so similar to each other thanks to their white hair and Mystic/Six Eyes that they're frequently mistaken as siblings. Shiki is oft described as looking like a female Satoru.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Once Shiki kills the curse that was keeping Tsumiki in a coma, the first sign that something's changed is when she's able to see Megumi's divine dogs. Cemented some time later when she develops a Cursed Technique after accidentally stumbling upon a curse under a bridge alongside some friends and ends up exorcising it in self-defense.
  • Tranquil Fury: Satoru never raises his voice as he rescues Shiki from the Kamo clan, but everyone can tell he is absolutely livid and one wrong answer away from going on a rampage.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Even as a 6 year old, Shiki takes to the life of a sorcerer with unnatural ease and is shockingly unruffled by the prospect of violence and bloodshed. According to Nanami, Shiki wasn't always this way, and it's implied that awakening her eyes and technique might have had an effect on her psyche.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Araya preys on the Kamo clan's desire for their legitimate heir Nobutomo to become sorcerers by transplanting Shiki's cursed technique into Nobutomo by having them kidnap her, but he only cares about them as a means to an end and is planning to take Shiki himself then leave them to their doom once Satoru comes looking for her.
  • Villain of Another Story: Geto is working in the background and preparing for the day when he can create a world of only sorcerers, but otherwise is still friendly and helpful towards Shiki. For her part, Shiki doesn't bear animosity towards him either and wishes he would turn himself in, if only to spare Satoru further suffering.
  • Villainous Legacy: Aozaki Touko may be long dead, but Araya uses his old friend's puppet research to create high-quality Cursed Corpses for his final battle with Shiki.
  • Waif-Fu: Shiki is noted to be slender in build and average in height but she's able to compensate with prodigious Cursed Energy Reinforcement, allowing her to move and strike with far more force than her appearance would suggest. The author has noted that, in terms of ranking her abilities, Shiki would only be a 6 in physical ability compared to a 10 in jujutsu skill.
  • Wake-Up Call: Megumi had little interest in training his Ten Shadows technique until he and Tsumiki ran into Naoya during Obon, saved only because Shiki and Satoru were there to protect them.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: It's noted repeatedly in the story that one of the (many) issues plaguing Jujutsu society is how all the various clans, despite presenting the appearance of a unified front, often put greater emphasis on hoarding power and influence for themselves rather then protecting the public from Curses, to the point they'll actively sabotage or undermine rival factions if they think they can get away with it. This has been going on long enough that there are centuries of bad blood between many of the big clans at this point.
  • Wham Episode:
    • The final viewpoint from the seventh interlude chapter. Kenjaku has taken Yuzuki's body as his next vessel. We also learn he has a collaborator within the Gojo clan.
    • Chapter 123. Satoru successfully corners Geto after he unleashes his curses on a city. Unable to convince him to give up his genocidal ambitions, he uses the Prison Realm (which, in canon, had been used on him by Kenjaku) to seal him away, rather then killing him like at the end of 0.
  • Wham Line:
    • The end of chapter 22, "Jihei is dead". Made all the more jarring because this chapter, and the previous, had otherwise been extremely lighthearted.
    • Nanami's interlude at the end of chapter 92, "Answer my summons, Zenin Toji". An investigation and murder mystery suddenly becomes a race against the clock now that the Sorcerer Killer has been revived and is, as known by those who've read the series, about to go on an unstoppable rampage.
  • Wild Card: As an unaffiliated Special Grade whose admitted goal is to find a way to prevent Cursed Spirits from coming into existence, Yuki Tsukumo answers to no one but herself. While she doesn’t play ball with the administration, she does make an effort to clean up after herself if her methods cause harm to the general population and will eliminate dangerous Cursed Spirits if she stumbles across them in her travels. She was also sorely tempted to hunt down Geto herself after learning of his new ambition to eradicate non-sorcerers, only holding off in the present due to a faint curiosity to see if anything will come of his actions.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Anything that gets its lines cut by Shiki will have that part of them permanently destroyed and unable to be repaired or regenerated by any means. This is especially useful against Cursed Spirits due to their natural regeneration.
